A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

The market is open on Saturday and Sunday from 10:30-15:30.

The Seminar and Book Launch “A Broken Tree: Francis Ledwidge Centenary” will take place. Admission is free, on first come basis.

+ “John Quinn The Poet of the Blackbird” is an illustrated talk by the broadcaster and writer on the life and work of Francis Ledwidge.

+ Dr Lucy Collins UCD will talk about the poetry of Francis Ledwidge in “Francis Ledwidge: Writing Landscape in a Time of War”.

+ Dr Nerys Williams UCD “Community of the Black Chair: Encountering Hedd Wyn and Francis Ledwidge”, will speak about the Welsh poet Hedd Wyn who was killed on the same day as Ledwidge and is buried very close to him in Artillery Wood Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

+ John Quinn will launch of “The Orchard Keeper” by the poet Susan Connolly. The poet will read from her new sequence of poems about Francis Ledwidge.

The seminar will be followed by a centenary concert in the National Gallery of Ireland.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)

+ a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations
+ Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world

There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). Explore the Library’s rich architectural history and heritage. The tour begins in the main hall of the Library and includes a visit to the Library’s iconic reading room.

Admission is free and all are welcome.

Every Saturday a free guided tour will take place in the Chester Betty Library. The tour starts at 14:00.

In addition there is another free tour every Wednesday at 13:00 and one on Sundays at 15:00

Every Saturday a kid’s book will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below). Suitable for age 0-6 with their parents.

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Saturday at 14:00 from March until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which so many Irishmen died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

The “YARN Storytelling Festival Bray 2017” will run from Sat 11 – Sun 19 November 2017 and will consist of 24 different events. Many of the events are free and there are storytelling and other events for kids of all ages, for families and for adults.

Celebrate the first National Harp Day at the National Botanic Gardens with harper Caitríona Rowsome and special guest harpers Aoife McGranaghan, Tierna Rowsome and Naoise Rowsome. There will be a harp recital and talk about the life and compositions of Irish harpercomposer, Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738).

Admission is free. The event will take place in the Teak House.

Joe Connell, author of “Michael Collins Dublin 1916-22” will be interviewed by Marcus Howard, filmmaker of Easter Rising Stories. Joe and Marcus have recently made a film about Michael Collins’ early years with members of Michael Collins’ family. The main topic of the interview will be if Michael Collins had a role as the father of modern guerilla warfare?

Unfortunately the organisers do not reveal if admission is free or not, but it could be free, hence the mentioning here.

Wedding and party band “Vertigo” will be in Palmerstown for a gig.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

The Kilkenny Shop Cafe is inviting to a Jazz Brunch Sunday every Sunday from 11:00-14:00 and from 14:30-16:30 a Bluegrass Band is taking over. Unfortuantely they don’t specify who the bands are.

The “New to You Designer Fashion” Sales in aid of St. Michael’s House is happening in Sunday in the RDS. You will find second hand designer and high street clothes, shoes and accessories for a fraction of the original price.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The Tara Buddhist Centre in Rathgar is inviting to a guided meditation “Prayers for Workd Peace” on Sunday.

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.

Admission is free and no booking required. Numbers are limited to 40 people at any one time but you can drop in and out whenever it suits you and as long as there is still space. Children have to be supervised at all times. The event takes place in the Atrium.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

“Käthe Kollwitz – Images of a Life” is a documentary by director Ralf Kirsten (93 minutes, GDR 1986, German, with English subtitles). It is a cinematic portrait of German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). The film traces her artistic stimulus and relates it to the political events of the 20th century.

“Käthe Kollwitz was 47 years old and already a well-established artist in Germany and abroad when Peter, her youngest son, volunteered to join the German army in World War I – two weeks later, he was killed. This painful tragedy changed Kollwitz’s life and art forever. She became a radical pacifist, and through her art she reflected on her son and on the meaning of war. After signing a petition against the Nazis, she was excluded from the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and her art was labeled “degenerate.” Lonely and sick, Kollwitz spent the last days of her life near Dresden and died at the age of 78, before the end of World War II.”

“The exhibition Käthe Kollwitz: Life, Death and War” is currently on show in the National Gallery Print Gallery.

This is a Film screening of “The Ocean After Nature, The Otolith Group, Hydra Decapita” (2010, 31min), followed by a discussion led by artist Dennis McNulty.

The Black Atlantic, the oceanic site where the trans-Atlantic slave trade produced a black identity regarding an African diaspora, is central to all music, persona and production of the elusive Detroit techno producers Drexciya. This film scrutinises the subjects of slavery, global finance, capitalism and climate change.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“Entomophagy is the human use of insects as food. This is not a remarkable concept in many parts of the world, but most diets in Ireland do not yet feature meaningful amounts of any insects or insect-derived ingredients. So far in Ireland, insects are being farmed towards non-human animal and plant feed ingredients. At this Alchemist Cafe you will find out about the potential and rationale for incorporating insects into the human diet.”

Speaker Anna Rettore is a graduate researcher in Dublin Institute of Technology investigating proteins derived from insects.

There will be samples of food-grade roasted insects, for everyone who wants, to try on the night.

“Instant Fizzy Frozen Yoghurt Workshop” with Susan Boyle is a Science Week event and a Willy Wonka inspired children’s workshop.

Combining science and food the children will make their own instant frozen yogurt using dry ice which freezes the yogurt mix instantly to make a frozen yogurt that tastes fizzy when you eat it. Children learn though interactive hands-on activity.

“Mathematics: the Queen of the Sciences, or students’ nightmare?” is a talk as part of Science Week in the Alliance Francaise.

“Maths classes are a major source of fear and stress for so many students. At the same time, mathematicians can talk for hours about the beauty of mathematics. Why is our perception of the subject so polar? Can maths lessons be more student-friendly? This event looks for answers during a public discussion, guided by the film “How I Came to Hate Math” by Olivier Peyon, and other
materials (maths students’ posters, maths comic books, board games). The discussion will be animated by researchers in mathematics. The event is supported by the French Embassy in Ireland.”

“World in Motion: Professional Circuits through 19th Century China” explores the acceleration of travel, and the interaction of various entertainers with China, c. 1850s-1890s. It uses “professionals” in an old sense, of theatres and performers, and discusses amateur and professional music, circuses, Hong Kong’s first tourist, a globe-trotting Chinese giant, jugglers and acrobats.

At “Speaking Words: Poetry and prose readings of writers own work” Poet Seán O’Meara and friends from the Bayside Writers Group will read a selection of poems and prose. Seán will read some of his poems written in English and others in Irish.

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin on 30 November 1667 and is the author of Gulliver’s Travels, the most popular Irish book ever written. To celebrate Swift’s life and legacy, Dublin City Public Libraries will run a programme of talks, exhibition and events as part of a citywide programme for Swift 350 Festival.

In a series of illustrated talks Brendan Twomey will describe and celebrate the complexity of Swift’s life, his personality and works unfolding the story of a clergyman, philanthropist, and writer. The Dublin Jam Session is an open Jam with full back line. It is open to all levels of musicians and singers and all genres of music and the only rule is that you must jam with others (not all your own band).

It takes place every Wednesday and admission is free.

The Dwarf Jar House Trio (Daniel Rorke (sax), Cormac O’Brien (bass) and Matthew Jacobson(drums)) will play a weekly Jazz gig every Wednesday in Dwarf Jar Cafe and they usually have one or more guest musicians or singers supporting them.

Dublin’s Master Storytellers for legends and myths will be in the Bowery talking about Women & Warriors.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

Los Paradiso are playing Rockabilly, Tex Mex, Western Swing, Surf in the Leeson Lounge. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).

The Harleys are a popular coverband and they will be in the Mezz every Wednesday at midnight.

As part of Science Week 2017, Science Foundation Ireland and the Science Gallery are inviting you to five screenings of some of the leading and award-winning films from the recent European Science TV and New Media Festival in Lisbon. The five films are very different.

StartUp Ballymun is inviting to an event for startups and owners of small businesses on Thursday.

There will be a panel of entrepreneurs to share their stories of growing a business, with an emphasis on how digital technology has enabled the business to compete with larger companies. A speaker from the IEDR, the Irish Internet Domain Registry, will share their market intelligence on where digital opportunities exist. Free business mentoring will be provided by LEO Dublin City. Real-time evaluations of your on-line business social media presence from digital business advisers will be provided and you can network with the panel and other business owners.

Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.

A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.

The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.

The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

Join Dr Niamh Shaw in conversation as she shares the science of space travel in her engaging and warm style. This is a talk for adults that will change your relationship with space and inspire you to embrace STEM in new and interactive ways

In 2014 Niamh Shaw announced that she wanted to go to space; and then she made a show about it. “To Space” explored her impossible dream and the current state of the space industry. She took the show all over the world to share her story.

Now her story continues “I Still Want to Go to Space” will see Niamh sharing her life’s journey to get to space, talking about her recent simulated Mars mission, her experiences in a zero gravity flight in Russia and the massive effort it takes to launch a human into space.

Niamh’s scientific knowledge peppered with her wit and approachability, makes her an ideal candidate to deliver a talk to adults that will engage, inspire and illuminate the relevance of space technology in our society.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

The Little Museum of Dublin has a fascinating collection of artefacts from the last 100 years Dublin’s history.

On other days and other times, admission is EUR 7 for adults and admission is by guided tour only.

Three local libraries are inviting to “Energy Saving Workshops” this week. Dublin’s Energy Agency Codema will be running energy clinics. Find out a range of information on how to make your home warmer and cosier and cut down on your energy bills. There will be demonstrations of the “Home Energy Saving Kit”, which is available to borrow free-of-charge from all Dublin City Public Libraries.

The kit contains six practical tools to give you an idea of how much energy you are using at home every day. You can also check out the interactive lighting display, which shows you the difference between old, traditional light bulbs and more energy efficient CFLs and LEDs.

With the talk “Stalin and Europe” Norman Naimark will be presenting his forthcoming book “Stalin and Europe, 1945-1953”. He is Professor of East European History at Stanford University.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.

Art seems to impact us all differently, but how does it do that? How does art impact our minds?

‘Art in Mind’ will explore more about the positive impact that art can have on our minds. With a panel of artists, psychologists and neuroscientists, live experiments and lots of conversation, this event will highlight the connections between science and art, and will give you a deeper appreciation of the value of creativity on our minds.

Contributors for ‘Art in Mind’ Dublin include Daniel Glaser, Neuroscientist and Director, Science Gallery London and Gillian Murphy, Lecturer in Applied Psychology and Dance Instructor. The event will be hosted by Scientist and Artist Niamh Shaw.

US radical political economist David M. Kotz will talk about the Russian Revolution, 100 years since it took place in 1917.

He is Professor of Economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Distinguished Professor of Economics at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and he wrote the books “Russia’s Path from Gorbachev to Putin: The Demise of the Soviet System”, the “New Russia (2007)”, and “The Rise and Fall of Neoliberal Capitalism” (2015).

A short book entitled “Organiser: Aspects of the life and work of Kevin McMahon”, edited by Scott Millar and Cian McMahon, will also by launched on the night.
