Gagaku – Performance & Workshop – Japanese Music

14:00, Sat 01 Jul

Chester Beatty Library, Gardens of Dublin Castle, Dublin 2

This is a Gagaku performance and workshop with Naoyuki Manabe featuring the Sho instrument.

Gagaku is a type of Japanese classical music, dance and song. It is the oldest music in Japan and was played at the Imperial Court and at ancient religious temples. Nowadays Gagaku is based on the music played at the Imperial Household Agency which is recognised as the world’s oldest orchestra – playing for over 1,300 years. Gagaku includes the use of wind, string and percussion instruments.
Sho is a traditional Japanese reed instrument, made up of slender bamboo pipes gathered together in a bundle. The instrument’s tone is similar to an organ and it produces sound whether the player’s breath is inhaled or exhaled, allowing extended periods of uninterrupted play.

This event is part of the commemorations of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Ireland.
