Hi all!
A new weekend with plenty of free events is here. The City Spectacular was great last week and this week it is the Dublin City Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park. It is a very different type of event, but also very popular.
[ad]
July is a good month for events anyway. Do you have plans for holidays? If you read the Dublin Event Guide regularly you have all the tools to make holidays in Dublin, – even if you live the whole year here. I bet you could do something you have NEVER done before every day during holidays in Dublin and – if you have an open mind – you wouldn’t get bored once. Sun, Beach and Mojitos are not as great as in some other places, but the rest if totally acceptable. :-)
The feckin money situation is getting more and more worrying and I really would prefer to focus on something else instead of harping on about it every week. BUT it is looking grim. In 15 days we will have to find EUR 320 just to cover the bills. That’s how much we are down. :-O Please please help via PayPal here even if you have a few Euro, everything counts!!
+++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 235 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 72,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 235 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I have chosen a song!! Shane Ericks beautifully sings one of the best known songs from The Carpenters. It is “I am on the top of the world” and this week’s feel good message is to look at the world and look down at creation being amazed and grateful. We live in an amazing world and we are lucky to live here and now!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week only Susan J was so great to help! Thank you! Your help is much needed and VERY much appreciated. But things are looking VERY serious oon the financial side at the moment!
Without donations the Dublin Event Guide will not continue arriving in your Inbox every week! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader, but no donations will eventually kill this resource for Dublin.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend I suggest that you either go to the Liberties Festival or to the Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park or to the Bray Wings Festival. Three good choices depending on your likes!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin is booming: Temple Bar Pub and Guinness Storehouse
Two media reports this week seem to indicate that Dublin is booming again. We had that before, but will it last this time?
The first one here, is about the Temple Bar Pub and the fact that it made a profit of EUR 3.29m last year, with a gross profit of EUR 10.3m. That is a HELL of a lot of pints even at crazy Temple Bar prices. Since the gross profit is the total revenue minus the cost of goods, the actual cost for the drink has already been subtracted. And if you divide that amount by 363, then you come to a gross profit of more than 28k per DAY!
And in the second report here, the Guinness Storehouse has announced that they will spend EUR 16m to expand the Storehouse, which includes a plan to double the size of the Gravity Bar on top of the building. Works will start in the beginning of 2018 and will be finished by 2019. Coincidentally the amount they will invest is “just” EUR 1 per visitor for ALL visitors since 2000: 16.5m visitors came to the Storehouse since it opened in 2000.
There is clearly a lot of money in Dublin…at least the pub and pub/drink-related businesses seem to have it.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

98FM Big Slide Festival Events
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Jul
Amphitheatre, Dublin City Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8
The 98Fm Big Slide is a 80 metres long water slide on Winetavern Street (that’s the street from Christ Church Catehdral to the Liffey). Sounds cool, but if you think you will be able to have a go, forget it!!!! Only ticket holder will get a chance to use the slide and tickets were given out on 98FM.
In fact this event was sooo disappointing last year that I wouldn’t even mention it if not one big change had been made. This year, there is a little festival at the Amphitheatre in the park between Christ Church and Dublin City Council HQ, just next to Winetavern Street with performances from Hit Machine Drummers, stilt walkers, jugglers, a circus skills workshop, a dunk tank with Jump Juice, a free fitness class with Ger Conroy and an outdoor screening of The LEGO Batman Movie.
So forget the slide and go to these events on Saturday: 12:00-13:00 Hit Machine Drummers 13:00-15:00 Circus Skills Workshop 15:00-16:30 Movie Screening: The Lego Batman Movie 16:30-18:00 Hit Machine Drummers
————-
On Sunday the events are: 12:30-13:30 Ger Conroy Fitness Class 13:30-15:30 Circus Skills Workshop 15:30-17:00 Movie Screening: The Lego Batman Movie 17:00-18:30 Hit Machine Drummers
Admission to the festival events is free and no booking required.

As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:
Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.

The Most Wuthering Heights Day
13:00 – 16:00, Sat 15 Jul
St. Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
“Wuthering Heights” is a song by Kate Bush from 1978 that became her best known song. There were two official music videos and one of them was the “red dress video” with a unique (and in my opinion as a non-dancer, VERY odd dance). You can watch it here www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW3gKKiTvjs
On the “The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever” on Saturday the main activity will be a group performance of THAT dance. Meeting point is at the corner of St. Anne’s Park at the junction of Clontarf Road with Mount Prospect Avenue, near Yang’s Restaurant.
The planned schedule is 13:00 Meet-up 13:15-14:15 Learning of the dance routine and rehearsal 14:15-15:00 Picnic (bring your own food) 15:00-15;15 Final rehearsal, before moving to the stage area for 15:15 15:30-16:00 Group performance in front of the main stage at the Dublin City Rose Festival
It is a slightly mad event I think, but it is popular, so why not!! 664 people have declared on the Facebook event page that they will be there, Only a fraction will actually come, but it seems as this event has the finger on the pulse of what people want. ;-)
Admission is free and no tickets are required.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 16 Jul
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park this Saturday and Sunday is a yearly family-friendly day out in this big park in Clontarf. There will be lots of food and other stalls, arts exhibition, Viking display, children’s entertainment, the Wolly Ward Petting Zoo will be there, an Archaeology workshop for kids, the Big Bear Planetarium, Free horse & carriage rides, Tai Chi demonstration, carousel and climbing tower.

The Rose Festival is really a great event and I definitely suggest that you pack in the family and go there for a relaxing afternoon. For the last few years the peak time for the roses (there is a rose garden) was over when the festival happened, but there is plenty of other activities.
Admission is free, parking in the park is available but does cost a fee. I can’t remember if it was EUR 3 or EUR 5 last year.

98FM Big Slide Festival Events
12:30 – 18:30, Sun 16 Jul
So forget the slide and go to these events on Sunday: 12:30-13:30 Ger Conroy Fitness Class 13:30-15:30 Circus Skills Workshop 15:30-17:00 Movie Screening: The Lego Batman Movie 17:00-18:30 Hit Machine Drummers
Admission to the festival events is free and no booking required.

Sonic Bike Experience (Ya Slip Ta Bang) – Science Gallery
12:30, Sun 16 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
As part of the current “Sound Check” exhibition in the Science Gallery you can rent out a bike to experience Dublin in a completely different way:
Ya slip ta bang is an interactive composition mapped over the streets of Dublin that will unfold for you as you ride ‘sonic bikes’ along specific routes of the city. Accompanied by electronic music, the composition tells the story of recovering he roin addict Lucy Dolan as she returns to the city, revisiting important places in her life.
The sonic bike is a bicycle with frame-mounted speakers that plays different sounds and music dependent on where the cyclist goes and how fast they ride, via a mounted location-sensitive system.
The bikes can be rented for free for up to 1 hour on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturday and Sunday between 12:30 and 16:00. The rules and conditions are on the website below and that is also where you book the bikes.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 16 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Music Under The Bridges
16:30 – 18:30, Sun 16 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
City Kayaking, who run Kayak tours on the Liffey came up with an interesting idea: To get people to book their tour on the Liffey on Sunday afternoon, they are providing a unique music experience with “Music Under the Bridges”.
There will be a music performance under some of Dublin’s Liffey bridges and if you have booked a Kayak, you can “sit in the front row” and be in the exclusive audience. You can do that on the website below (but it is not free.)
There is a free component to it though: Even if you are on land at the bridge where the performance takes place, you will probably hear the music and can listen to the performance. Not in the front row, but better than not at all. ;-)
The performers listed are Pia Dunne, Fin Divilly, Bradley Girls.
The performances will be 20 minutes long and will take place under bridges near Ha’Penny Bridge. The Kayak tour will start at 16:30 so the first performance will be somewhat later.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 21 Jul

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Averages and Salaries :-O
So what are you? Are you below average or above average? Before you drop your self-esteem to the floor, let me tell you that without a doubt there are areas in your life or personality where you are well above average, but there might also be some areas where you are blow average. We are multifacetted, so there is give and take and lots of areas where we can shine.
When it comes to numbers, however, the truth is sometimes much bitterer. About two weeks ago I found an article that specified what the average salary in Ireland is. And this average for full time workers stands at EUR 45,611. That is a good bit higher than I had expected and I know that many people WISHED they were just average i.e. not far below average! (If part time workers are considered, then the average salary is EUR 36,519.) Clearly crazily high salaries in some sectors distort the average number quite a bit.
Ohh and if you are anywhere near that average, please chip a bit of your average in the Dublin Event Guide hat!! Without your help it is in trouble! You can help here www.paypal.me/dublineventguide

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
