Hi all!
A new approach: Instead of publicising the Dublin Event Guide in two stages in full, I extracted the Saturday events and posted them on the Dublin Event Guide website. And then I continued with the work on the events from Sunday until next Friday and I am sending this now on Saturday evening late. I am not sure yet if that is a better solution, but it allowed me to release the information earlier on Saturday than usually. Maybe that helps!?
[ad]
The Big 500 Share is still running and 3 nice people supported my work with a donation last week. Thanks a lot! The target was to raise at least EUR 3000 through this campaign, but with 1300 we are still far far away from the target, BUT we got a little more than EUR 400 for the two charities. That is respectable! The problem now is that the remaining amount of just under 900 will be used up by the end of April. :-O If you can help, please do! Check the details in the Dublin News section and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)
+++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 69,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I have a thought for you:
People are like Garbage Trucks. For a while they fill up with garbage until they are full, then they need to dump the garbage somewhere to be able to function again.
So, if someone dumps their garbage on you, don’t take it personal! The other person was just so full up that they had to dump.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week another Free Wednesday will take place, a Green Drinks Dublin and the Five Lamps Arts Festival is providing lots of events. I don’t think you will be bored! ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!
With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide ten weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!! Not a single cent was donated last week, so we are not making any progress. :-(
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

30 km/h on all “residential roads” from 01 April
You might think it is an April Fool’s Joke, but such nonsense is just day-to-day business in Dublin: From 01 April there is a 30 km/h speed limit on all residential roads between the canals all day, every day. I am totally on favour of 30 km/h speed limits near schools, in areas with a large amount of pedestrians and in other danger spots. But a blanked speed limit of 30 km/h is total nonsense.
Dublin City claims it will save lives, but they don’t seem to substantiate that with clear numbers that tell us how many people actually died in traffic accidents between the canals in the last 12 months or the last few years. And out of these fatal accidents, I would like to know how many involved a speed of the car of more than 30 km/h. I bet Dublin City has NO such numbers or statistics, so they just use the emotional argument that lives will be saved, expecting that everybody will shut up then.
Speed limits should make sense, then the majority of people will stick to them. But where they don’t make sense, the “30” signs are a waste of effort and the speed limit will have absolutely no effect.
At the time of writing this, the new speed limit wasn’t in effect yet, so we will have to see after 01 April if the “residential road” classification was applied to the right streets, let me know if you find streets that are in the speed limit zones that shouldn’t be. Oh and if you think it won’t affect you because you don’t have a car, think again: Every bus and every taxi will also have to adhere to the limit. (Only cyclists don’t have to! They can now easily overtake busses and cars at any speed they like because they can’t be taken to task when exceeding the limit.)

One City, One Book: Echoland
Every April a book is chosen as the “One City, One Book” book that has a strong connection with Dublin and then lots of events happen throughout the month in connection with the book and its topic.
In 2017, “Echoland” by Joe Joyce was selected. It is a thriller set in Dublin in World War II about spies and politics in 1940 Dublin.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Apr
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?
About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.
The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.
Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Food Rescue Picnic – Five Lamps Arts Festival
16:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Apr
Charleville Mall, North Strand, Dublin 1
A Food Rescue Picnic will take place in St. Agatha’s Hall near the Royal Canal at Charleville Mall.
It is a communal meal about sustainability and food and to share ideas, exchange knowledge over a home-cooked meal made from food that would have been wasted otherwise.
Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment (VOICE) and volunteers will cook the meal, made entirely from good food that would have been thrown away due to its short sell-by date or because it looked funny. Ireland throws away 1 million tonnes of food each year, of which around 600,000 tonnes is preventable.

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 02 Apr
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The First World War – City Hall Lunchtime Series
13:10, Tue 04 Apr
Council Chamber, City Hall, Dame Street, Dublin 2
A series of lunchtime lectures in City Hall deal with “Remembrance & Commemoration: The First World War”.
The First World War was at the time the most devastating conflict in world history – never before had so many people been slaughtered and so many countries been involved. The commemoration of this tragic event required careful consideration. This series looks at commemoration in Belgium, Germany, Northern Ireland and the Irish Free State as they explored the legacy of a cruel war and tried to give a voice to the young men who had been killed or survived.
Admission to these lectures is free for the first 130 people. Doors open at 12:30 and the lecture begins at 13:10.
The four lectures in April are: + 04 April: Ireland and the Great War in Belgium. Lecture by Piet Chielens + 11 April: ‘Enough People have died: No one else should be killed in battle!’ How Kathe Kollwitz became a pacifist during World War I. Lecture by Dr Alexandra von dem Knesebeck. + 18 April: The Islandbridge Memorial Gardens. Lecture by Carole Walker + 25 April: Islandbridge – People, Places, Pictures. Lecture by Patrick Hugh Lynch

Quantified Self Meet Up – Talk
18:30 – 20:00, Tue 04 Apr
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
Do you track personal information, hoping to gain insights into yourself or your surrounding world? Are you curious about people who do? The Dublin Quantified Self group (#QSelfDublin) is for anyone interested in self-tracking. Whether you record your jogging times, how often you communicate with friends or how you are feeling – they would love to hear from you!
Can we track what we ate from our blood? From our pee? The Nutri-Markers team from UCD are exploring this as part of the UCD-Nutrimarkers study, gaining a deeper understanding of the link between nutrition and health. The potential for this is huge – no more food diaries for a start. The science of nutrigenomics, metabolomics, is still very much in it’s infancy, with advanced testing with DNA and blood analysis.
Admission is free, but registration is required via the meet-up site here.

Rob Greenfield: Be the Change in a Messed up world – Talk
19:00 – 21:00, Tue 04 Apr
Bí Urban, 3 Manor Street, Stoneybatter
Rob Greenfield is an adventurer, environmental activist, humanitarian and dude making a difference. He is dedicated to leading the way to a more sustainable and just world.
Rob is the creator of The Food Waste Fiasco, a campaign that strives to end food waste and hunger in the U.S. and he has shown how nearly half of all food in the U.S. is wasted while 50 million (1 in 7) Americans are food insecure.
This event is taking place in Bí Urban, a not for profit space in Stoneybatter that connects Urban livers to nature in the city and sustainable education.
The event doesn’t really fit into the Dublin Event Guide because it is not free, There is a “suggested” donation of EUR 10 but the wording “entry by donation” doesn’t instill me with confidence that NO donation is an option. Why do I still mention it here? Because Rob Greenfield does a great job and quite a number of people told me about his events in Dublin and asked me to include them. (This event will have only 40 spaces.)

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 05 Apr
Various heritage locations in Dublin
Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + The Casino, Marino + Rathfarnham Castle + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Trust issues – Is the Irish Police Force dodgy?
The An Garda Siochana, the Irish Police Force, is – like every other police force in the democratic world – the one and only enforcer of right and wrong in the country. They are not the judge if it is REALLY right or wrong, that’s what we have the judiciary (the courts and judges) for, but the police has to enforce the laws.
If you enforce the laws, however, you should also be obliged to stick to the laws. It increases your credibility tremendously and you set an all important example. If the rules don’t apply to the enforcer of the laws, then people behave like the children of parents that don’t stick to the rules they spout out. They become unruly and break the rules.
A small example: It is wrong for the Gardai to be allowed to use/handle mobile phones when driving, as long as all of us are not allowed to use mobile phones. And I think that EVEN if the mobile phone use is exclusively in the pursuit of their job….because we all know that it is NOT only in the pursuit of their job when they use the phone.
This is however a really small example and the Irish Gardai do it better:
1) Over the last few years they claimed that they carried out 1.9mio roadside alcohol test, but the Medical Bureau of Road Safety only knows of 1mio. How can there be a discrepancy of nearly a million? (RTE Report)
2) 14,500 people were prosecuted for road traffic offences and will have their convictions quashed because the gardai screwed up. They were brought to court without getting a fixed charge notice first. Not ok! (How come it took so long to come out?) The people that now get their money back and points removed because they drove 3km/h too fast (I got 3 points for that. Grrr!) are ok in my eyes, but what about people that committed serious traffic offences and who will also go without any penalty now? (RTE Report)
3) The Sergeant Maurice McCabe saga that is also called the Garda Whistleblower Scandal where Maurice McCabe lifted the lid on Garda corruption around the penalty point system and was threatened within the police force and a cover up was attempted is still not completely sorted. 5 years after it started!
4) This week it emerged that there are financial irregularities at the Garda College in Templemore. They had 50 (!) bank accounts for the college and used money for entertainment and presents that should not have been used for that. (RTE Report)
5) And now the Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan indicates that this might not be the only falsifications there are.
Can we really trust our Police Force? I am sure (and know) there are many Gardai that can be trusted but if there are soo many problems, there seems to be a huge systemic problem and if you need LUCK to get to deal with a “good” Gardai then that doesn’t instill confidence in the enforcer of right and wrong in our country.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
