Dublin Event Guide 507: Printfest, Engineers Week, Adult Learner Fest, Green Drinks Dublin, International Women’s Day

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

Engineers Week is a week-long programme (from 04-10 March) of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland, to create a positive awareness of and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession among young people.

The programme contains about 80 event entries for Dublin. There are a good few events repeated a number of times, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the events. The events that are for the general public and for families seem to be rather skin on the ground, though.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2017.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

Nu Ethical’s swap-shop will be on Level 3 of dlr LexIcon and you can swap your clothes there or repair, recycle and up-cycle. The team from Nu Ethical will provide practical and creative ideas to give your clothes a second life. So bring along your secondhand clothes and Swap and Shop til you drop!

Artist Eleanor Lawler will be giving free children’s drop in workshops from 11:30-13:30, so there is something for all the family. No booking required – just drop in to the Project Room beside the gallery on level 3 of dlr LexIcon.

“Teen Creatives: Comic Book” is a workshop with Alan Nolan. Participants will write a short script and will create their own individual three or four panel cartoon strip.

Suitable for Ages 12+ (max. 15 students). It will take place on Level 5, Room 4.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

On the first Saturday every month, the “A Fabulous Market” will take place in the George Bar in South Great George’s Street.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?

About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.

The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.

Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is a weekly market (every Saturday) with approx 16 stalls, music, pizzas from the Big Blue Bus and the Bernard Shaw Garden Bar. Expect vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac and more and DJs will provide the entertainment.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher runs every Saturday. It is an alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

Every Saturday a kid’s book will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below). Suitable for age 0-6 with their parents.

This workshop looks at traditional knit & crochet patterns and their symbolism dating back to the 17th Century. Pieces created in the workshop will be displayed in the exhibition.

The New Theatre is inviting to a Playreading of new writing by David Clune. The play “Drapes” is about three workers in a drapery cleaning company and their lives.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet in Clontarf on the seafront car park, on Clontarf Road, opposite the Clontarf Bus Depot for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

The event is weather dependent, so check www.irishastrosoc.org/events/events.htm after 18:00 on the night in the case of poor weather, to see if it is going ahead.

The Love Sick Puppies will play gig in the Bowery.

The Local Enterprise Week 2017 takes place from Sun 05 March until Sat 11 March.

The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.

It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the highly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.

Initially an attempt was made to add music, storytelling and other entertainment to the event so that the horse trading would be pushed in the background, but that didn’t work. So now it is back to horse trading as the main purpose.

Trader need to register with Dublin City and get a trading license for the day and with all these restrictions the market is definitely not what it was before.

Did it solve the problem? Well, it is highly unlikely that the horse traders now only twice a year sell and buy horses. So if they buy and sell more frequently then the trading happens elsewhere where the authorities can’t keep an eye on it. Consequently the problem might have gone away for Dublin, but if we don’t see it, it doesn’t mean it is not happening!

Now the big questions that people ask:
1) What is there to do?
2) I love animals. In the interest of the horses, should I go to the Horse Fair or stay away?

1) There is not much to do at the event, but you will see a good few horses and a horse fair is a bit of a spectacle.
2) Many have the concern that going to the Horse Fair would support bad treatment of animals because sellers and buyers at the fair have been found in the past to mistreat the horses and ponies. However, your attendance (or not) will not have any impact on the horse fair and will also not influence the sellers or buyers to treat the animals in any other way than they normally do. Because the authorities are expected to be there in big numbers the horse handlers are probably on their best behaviour anyway. So it is unlikely that your attendance or non-attendance will have any impact on the welfare of the animals.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months. It will take place every Sunday at 12:00 and only 20 places are available on the tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. There will be Food Stalls, Flea Market, Vintage Clothing, Arts&Crafts and a Pop-Up Record Store.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The Kilkenny Shop Cafe is inviting to a Jazz Brunch Sunday every Sunday from 11:00-14:00 and from 14:30-16:30 a Bluegrass Band is taking over. Unfortuantely they don’t specify who the bands are.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.

Inspired by the collection and the exhibitions in the National Gallery, these workshops are suitable for all ages from approx. 18 months to age 8. You can choose to stay for as long or as short a time as works for you.

The space will be divided by age and ability, and each child will be encouraged by Artist and NGI Education Assistant Caomhán Mac Con Iomaire and the week’s guest artist to create their own work on the week’s theme.

Admission is free and no booking required. Numbers are limited to 40 people at any one time but you can drop in and out whenever it suits you and as long as there is still space. Children have to be supervised at all times. The event takes place in the Atrium.

Printfest (part of the Engineer’s Week events) gives you the opportunity to see the ‘engineering’ behind the traditional craft of letterpress printing.

The National Print Museum’s volunteers are active retired printers and compositors and they demonstrate highlights of the collection and share stories of their time in the traditional letterpress print industry. Printfest is suitable for all ages, with many printing and craft activities for all the family.

I was at a similar events a few years ago and was fascinated by the stories the retired printers told. Mechanical printing is unfortunately a dying art and you only have a very limited time to hear the stories from the people that really worked in the job! Take that opportunity!!

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature “RIAM Series 3”, a concert with Redmond O’Toole on the 8-string guitar. He will play music by Mertz, Bach, De Falla, Rodrigo and Domeniconi.

It is the third of a five-concert series featuring musicians associated with the Royal Irish Academy of Music – Doctor in Music Performance.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The official launch of National Tree Week takes place here in the National Botanic Gardens with a programme of plantings, walks and activities for all ages and interests. National Tree Week is an initiative of the Tree Council.

Call into the children’s garden for fun, free tree activities for families. Try the twig twinning challenge, do some bark rubbing and check out how old the tree stumps are by counting the tree rings and learn fun ways of measuring how tall a tree is! Kids can make their own pots and plant up a seedling tree to take home and take care of.

Grownups can see how the experts plant and measure a variety of trees. Tree Walks and self-guided trails will also be available. For information on times of events check into the Visitor Centre.

The Bagots Hutton Jazz Brunch takes place on Sundays from 12:00 with Jazz music from 14:00. The Noel Dumont and band will perform a mix of jazz, soul and lounge music.

“Telescopes in the Night Sky” is a talk by John Dolan (IAS) that he will give on Sunday and will repeat again the following Sunday (12 March) in the same location.

Unfortunately many telescopes end up in attics or garages gathering dust. The whole experience of buying, setting up a telescope and using it for the first time can often leave people disappointed and perhaps put them off astronomy for life. Before you buy a telescope, you should have a basic knowledge of the skies, comfortable with how the Earth moves in relation to the stars and willing to learn more.

To help anyone interested in getting started, this talk will cover the best way to start observing the night sky including when and how to begin using telescopes. There will be a few modern telescopes at the talk and you will have an opportunity to learn about the main types their advantages and limitations. You will also be able to chat with a number of our astronomers who will be present.

The talk will be repeated on Sunday 12 March at 14:00 in the same venue.

Every Sunday two free guided tours will take place in the Chester Betty Library. The first one is at 15:00 and the second one at 16:00.

In addition there is another free tour every Wednesday at 13:00.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“Orazio and Artemisia Gentileschi, Father and Daughter” is a free Sunday talk with Dr Bláithín Hurley, UCC. This talk is in association with the exhibition Beyond Caravaggio (currently in the Beit Wing), but it is not taking place in the Caravaggio exhibition space, so there is no charge.

This tour of “Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising” will focus on key women within the exhibition and the roles women would have played in the rebellion.

Admission is free and no booking required, places allocated on a first-come first served basis 15 minutes before tour starts.

Blues Got Soul, a four-piece blues band from Dublin is performing the music of the founding fathers of blues and blues masters in the International Bar every Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Travel around European traditional dancing culture without a ticket at the weekly Bal Folk Dance Sessions.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival is a nationwide celebration of adult learning coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation. It runs from 06-10 March and includes information sessions, (taster) workshops, (sample) lectures and guided tours and most events are free.

Engineers Week is a week-long programme (from 04-10 March) of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland, to create a positive awareness of and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession among young people.

The programme contains about 80 event entries for Dublin. There are a good few events repeated a number of times, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the events. The events that are for the general public and for families seem to be rather skin on the ground, though.

From 01-17 March Seachtain na Gaeilge (Irish Language Week) is taking place. It is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of Irish language and culture that takes place every year in Ireland.

You would expect LOTS of events to take place during the 2.5 weeks, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make out what is happening or when…despite English translation.

Check out www.peig.ie/ allegedly you will find all events there, but I struggled to find anything else in Dublin apart from events at Gaelscoils. If anybody wants to send me a list of events from 11-17 March, I will include them in next week’s Dublin Event Guide.

The National Tree Week, organised by the Tree Council of Ireland since 1985, is a week-long programme of events to celebrate trees. This year’s Tree Week Lecture is with George Cunningham, author and bibliophile. It will take place in the Visitor Centre.

The St. Patrick’s Cathedral sets an example with their yearly participation and contribution to the AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival that others should follow!

The 14:30 Tour of the Cathedral is free from Monday until Friday if you mention the “Adult Learners’ Festival” at the ticket desk.

Using storybooks both familiar and new, Magda from Yo-Yo Yoga presents a unique opportunity for children to experience yoga through the medium of storytelling. The event will take place on the Mondays 06, 13, 20, 27 March at 15:00.

He is just days away from bankruptcy unless the German company Zenith confirms the 15 million Euro share option deal. Turin is a city paralysed by the financial crisis. Deserted factories, empty streets and the distant sound of protest provide the backdrop for this incisive film.

The NLI and the Accredited Genealogists Ireland (AGI) invite everybody who is interested in family history research to lunchtime talks and workshops for this year’s Adult Learners’ Festival.

This event is an introductory talk on sources for Irish genealogy, looking at methodology and the best sources to start your research.

Following the talk, professional genealogists and members of AGI will provide a number of workshops sharing their tips for navigating online resources from 14:15-16:00. The first session will be an introduction to Irish genealogy, looking at methodology and the best sources to start your research, such as civil registration and the census. Workshop places will be allocated on the day.

“Industrial Memories: Witnessing the Institution and the Archive” is a talk by Dr Emilie Pine (UCD) organised by the School of Histories and Humanities. This talk is based on the Industrial Memories project, which is a UCD project funded by the Irish Research Council under New Horizons 2015-18.

Emilie Pine will consider the ways that digital approaches to archives can tell new stories and make the past accessible in new ways.

The talk focuses on the UCD IRC-funded project Industrial Memories, which digitally re-reads the 2009 Ryan Report on institutional child abuse in Ireland, using approaches such as text analytics and mobile apps to open up the archive.

This document is one of the most important publications in the history of the Irish state. It is also one of the least read. Pine considers how digital approaches might change that.

The Griffith College’s Faculty of Computing Science is inviting to a series of free “121 Digital Computing Classes”.

The classes are specifically designed for adult learners who are looking to upskill their digital skills and they will see each attendee assigned an individual mentor from one of Griffith Colleges Computing courses.

As part of The Month of La Francophonie in Ireland, meet Azouz Begag, writer, politician and researcher in economics and sociology.

As a researcher and a politician Begag set the focus on the problems of unequal opportunity for those brought up in industrial suburbs and ghettos. He also raised this topic in his different novels, often inspired by his childhood as the son of Algerian parents. Begag is best known for the autobiographical novel Le Gone du Chaâba, (1986). He wrote also “The Sheep in the Bathtub” (2007) about his two years as French state minister and others.

This interview conducted by Michael Cronin will be followed by a Q&A with the public.

Reading Dante is an initiative started in the summer of 2015 to make Dante’s Comedy more accessible. The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in J.W. Sweetman’s. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together.

“Irish Reptiles” is the topic this month. Ireland is home to both native and introduced reptiles. These remarkable creatures are found throughout the country in our coast land, bog land and upland habitats. Find out more about them at this talk by Kieran Flood, IWT Conservation Officer. EveryTuesday at 19:00, The Dublin Language Exchange takes place in the Czech Inn. It is the biggest free meeting of people from all around Dublin that are interested in learning languages and communicate with speakers of other languages.

Every Tuesday an informal sing along with Ukulele and Toy Musical Instruments takes place in the Stag’s Head. Just bring your instrument and come along. Beginners are welcome. Radio amateurs experiment with and operate homemade and commercial radio communications equipment, to communicate with other radio amateurs around the world.

The South Dublin Radio Club was founded in 1980 and meets every Tuesday from 20:00-22:00 at the Ballyroan Community Centre. Talks on various aspects of amateur radio are regularly held at the club along with practical demonstrations of various subjects such as Amateur Television (ATV), voice communication via satellite using handheld radio and antenna and other radio related topics. Today is International Women’s Day.

Wikipedia explains that in different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women for their economic, political and social achievements to a strong political and human rights theme.

There are a number of events in Dublin to celebrate that day, but I found it difficult to find a few free events. What I did find is listed in this Dublin Event Guide separately.

Innovation Enterprise Network runs weekly workshops and one-to-one mentoring sessions for unemployed high-skilled professionals at Deansgrange Library. The sessions take place on every Wednesday morning from 10:00-12:00.

Women4Women invite to an Intercultural Celebration of International Women’s Day. There will be international food, dance and other activities. And you can get information about courses, events and organisations.

The event takes place in Marlay House in Marlay Park and admission is free.

Did you ever want to give drawing a go? Or maybe you are a budding artist looking for like-minded people to draw with? The Creative Den in Rua Red runs free weekly drawing sessions on Wednesdays at 11:00.

The history of Glasnevin goes back millennia but really first came to prominence when St Mobhi built his early medieval monastery here. From then on famous people and places have populated this geographically highly desirable suburb. Join this Let’s Walk & Talk tour to find positive links with Glasnevin’s intriguing historic past and enjoy its great legacies.

The walk will include a tour of St Mobhi Church and surrounding area, a showing of ‘ Mobhi and Stories from Glasnevin’, a DVD recently produced by the Finglas Historical Society and Friend’s of St Mobhi’s.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The film “Half-life in Fukushima” will be screened.

Five years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster, Naoto Matsumura, a Japanese farmer ekes out a solitary existence within the radiation red zone. Here, the blowing wind is the soundtrack to Naoto’s lonely days, spent cultivating his land and feeding his cattle. Naoto fights to build a new life in this post-apocalyptic landscape, fearlessly facing the silent danger of radioactivity. He is a guardian of the past and the symbol of humanity’s need for a change. This workshop will consist of a brief introduction to film theory and an overview of “The Heroes Journey” template, used by many for storytelling in film, myth and fiction.

You will then use the template to construct a story that may be inspired by a story from your own lives.

Tree Walk at Ashtown Castle Arboretum in Phoenix Park (next to the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre) with the OPW Arboricultural (Tree) Officer will take in some of the magnificent specimen trees that are to be found at Ashtown Demesne.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

“Celebrating Successful Women in Engineering” is an event in DIT Bolton Street (Room 446). The Young Engineers society and DIT are celebrating International Women’s Day and Engineers Week with a lecture series by four of the country’s most successful women in the field of engineering.

The event starts with tea and coffee and the presentations start at 18:15.

Five years after a horrific accident at work, Nigel Ackland was fitted with the world’s most advanced prosthetic hand. Following a life-changing accident and six months of pain, surgery and infections he decided to have an elective trans-radial amputation. Nigel became the first person to trial RSL Steeper’s myoelectric prosthetic hand – the bebionic3. In this presentation Nigel will describe living with a prosthesis and how advances in design and technology bring increased benefits to the wearer.

As part of Engineers Week, this will be an evening of expert talks focusing on astronomy and the engineering behind space exploration. How we are going to get them there? What materials might be needed to withstand the rigors of space exploration? And how engineers are designing systems so settlers can survive on arrival? Illustrators Ireland and The Comics Lab brings together the most promising indie comics makers from all over Ireland to perform live readings of their short comics. Prof Michael Gibney (former Prof of Food & Health at UCD) will talk about obesity and good nutrition.

“We share an enormous amount of our genes with the animal kingdom but, with the exception of the hand of man, no other species gets fat and remains fat for life. In his talk Professor Gibney will discuss the problem of obesity, its prevalence in society and possible solutions for its redress. He will consider the financial implications of obesity to health care systems, obesity and the evolution of obesity, the modern food chain and what foods and nutrients matter.”

The public lecture in the School of Biochemistry and Immunology “The Fountain of Youth: Autophagy and Ageing-Related Diseases” with Prof James Murray will take place and admission is free.

On International Women’s Day, Dr Fionnuala Walsh (TCD) discusses the role of Irishwomen on the home front during the First World War. The lecture will examine women’s mobilisation to support the war effort and also their politicisation in a world at war. The lecture also briefly looks at the granting of female suffrage in 1918 and questions whether the war had any lasting emancipatory effect for Irishwomen.

A free public information seminar with one of Ireland’s leading headache & migraine specialists, Dr. Martin Ruttledge, Consultant Neurologist, The Hermitage Clinic will take place.

Dr. Ruttledge will discuss the causes and symptoms of different types of migraines with treatment and medication options available to sufferers. He will also outline new and emerging treatments for migraine and offer advice on patient self management to prevent triggering attacks.

The seminar will feature a public interview between, MAI founder & president, Audrey Craven and long time migraine sufferer Lynn Geldof. This session will offer attendees the opportunity to hear a real patient story of living with chronic migraine, the challenges in finding a treatment that works and the successful path Lynn has taken to reduce her migraine attacks.

The screening of the film Suffragette will take place. It is a movie directed and written by women, telling the story of earlier efforts towards women’s rights in Britain.

The movie is set in the 1912 when many of the women that were actively involved in the Suffragette movement of the late nineteenth and early twenty century, could not see the fruit of their work as it only became a reality in Britain in 1928 and later on in other countries.

After the film an open forum will welcome comments from the attendees.

The AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival is a nationwide celebration of adult learning coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation. It runs from 06-10 March and includes information sessions, (taster) workshops, (sample) lectures and guided tours and most events are free.

Engineers Week is a week-long programme (from 04-10 March) of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland, to create a positive awareness of and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession among young people.

The programme contains about 80 event entries for Dublin. There are a good few events repeated a number of times, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the events. The events that are for the general public and for families seem to be rather skin on the ground, though.

THis exhibition is a compilation of photographs from a collection of the late Cavaliere Barbato Borza and other sources. It charts the history of Italians in Ireland from the late 1800s to the present day. The event is organised by COMITES Irlanda in collaboration with Italian and Irish institutions.

The exhibition will be on show from 09 March – 21 April and opening hours are Tues+Fri 10:00-17:00, Wed+Thur 10:00-19:00 and Sat 11:00-17:00. Closed on Sun+Mon.

This is an international and interdisciplinary conference of the ‘Identities in Transformation’ College Research Theme in conjunction with the Coimbra Group Social Sciences and Humanities Working Group Dublin.

“Serious economic, political and societal crises have shaken Europe in recent years. Within these, and contributing to them, politicians, journalists, and other commentators across Europe have revived, revitalised, and instrumentalised deeply engrained and predominantly divisive patterns of national stereotyping and othering. These patterns can be equally observed in Brexit and the financial crisis, in the Ukraine conflict, in anxieties and controversies around increased migration, and in the rise of populist neo-national parties and movements.”

This conference will investigate the crucial cultural dimensions behind recent European crises and will interpret and critique these crisis discourses, to assess their impact and to consider counter strategies.

Experts from fourteen countries across Europe will interrogate the uses and abuses of stereotypes and narratives of othering in crisis discourse through analytic approaches from fields as varied as cultural history, international relations, political science, translation studies and literary analysis.

The “Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture: Augustine Henry as seen through Elsie Henry’s diaries” with Dr Clara Culle (UCD) will look at the personal records of Augustine Henry’s wife Elsie. Dr Cullen is the author of ‘The World Upturning: Elsie Henry’s Irish wartime diaries, 1913-1919’, which offers a new perspective on Augustine Henry as a man, a scientist and a husband. Elsie’s diaries contain detailed descriptions of the Henrys’ visits to various estates and forestry plantations during the years of the Great War, a very unsettled political period.

The Augustine Henry Lecture is organised by the Society of Irish Foresters and it will take place in the Visitor Centre.

Sara Baume will be in the Central Library to read from her second novel “A Line Made by Walking”.

Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Ireland is dedicated to bridging the gap between academia, industry and NGOs by partnering with disadvantaged communities to improve their quality of life through education and implementation of sustainable engineering projects.

At their conference speakers include Aiden Madden discussing Arup’s work in Bangladesh after the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013, Colin Keogh of The Rapid Foundation will present on their work using low-cost technologies to help improve the lives of people in developing countries and there will also be updates from EWB-Ireland on research, volunteering, overseas projects and more.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. On the second day of the Alliance Francaise Comic Book Festival, the opening of the exhibition “Highlights of the Belgian Comic Strip” put together by the Belgian Comic Strip Centre will take place. Belgian illustrator and author Max de Radiguès, whose works will be part of the show, will attend and will talk about his work. A Q&A will follow.

“This is Cuba” is a selection of images from Lynn Feeney’s collection depicting current Cuban life. Lynn has spent time in Cuba on different occasions between 2011 and 2016 and she travelled with local Cuban professional photographer and friend, Ramsés Batista from Havana to Trinidad, Cienfuegos and Vinales. Local knowledge gained them access to private homes and mansions, boxing clubs and blacksmiths, exploring the colours, culture, people and places of a rapidly changing island.

The exhibition will run from 10 March – 21 April and the opening takes place on Thursday.

This practical, interactive and entertaining session is a great opportunity to experience the theatre of a mock Workplace Relations Commission hearing, understand how the process works and build your confidence to prepare for any future hearings without risk to your business.
The tribunal will be presided over by Davnet O’Driscoll, a WRC adjudicator designate and solicitor with Amorys Solicitors. Stephen Fitzpatrick BL, barrister and Deirdre Farrell, solicitor with Amorys will be representing the parties.

This event will provide attendees with an opportunity to help demystify and learn about Workplace Relations Commission proceedings relating to a claim for unfair dismissal. It will also provide guidance on how to implement workplace policies in your business.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The AONTAS Adult Learners’ Festival is a nationwide celebration of adult learning coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation. It runs from 06-10 March and includes information sessions, (taster) workshops, (sample) lectures and guided tours and most events are free.

Engineers Week is a week-long programme (from 04-10 March) of nationwide events, celebrating the world of engineering in Ireland, to create a positive awareness of and spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession among young people.

The programme contains about 80 event entries for Dublin. There are a good few events repeated a number of times, but that doesn’t take away from the quality of the events. The events that are for the general public and for families seem to be rather skin on the ground, though.

As part of International Women’s week, SAOL, the community project that focuses on improving the lives of women affected by addiction and poverty, will bring the women who use their drug and alcohol services together, to talk about their experiences.

This talk is a progression from Tuesday’s introduction in the National Library and looks at sources for land and property records now available online. In the Francophonie Film Festival (01 March – 02 April), the film Polish film “La Dette / The Mole” from 2012 will be screened.

“Pawe?, a Polish man in his early 30s, makes a living with his father Zygmunt importing second-hand clothing from the North of France to Southern Poland. On his way back from one of his regular “business trips”, Pawe? is shocked to discover his father’s picture on the cover of a Polish tabloid newspaper. The headline “traitor” is written next to his name. Zygmunt is a genuine hero of the struggle against totalitarianism and a recognised member of the “Solidarno??” labour movement of the 80s. But now, Zygmunt is suddenly accused by the paper of having acted as a secret informer called THE MOLE by the communist regime.”

The film will be followed by a Q&A with film Director Rafael Lewandowski.
