Hi all!
What a nice day this Saturday!! The sun is shining and it is 7 degrees and you are probably waiting for me. I am, however, sitting inside wrapped up warm (when you work through the night it gets COLD) and I am still typing. :-O Not ideal!
[ad]
The Big 500 Share is still running and still needs a LOT of support. Check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)
I am posting this Dublin Event Guide again in two stages, but the delay between the two should be shorter than in other weeks: First online on the website and the smart phone app/web app and then I will add more events and send the final edition by mail as soon as it is finished.
This is the FINAL version.
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
In this week’s Feel Good Slot is a quoteby American author and speaker John Jantsch. He said
The secret to success is doing the stuff other people won’t do & doing it for a really long time. – John Jantsch
Now, you are possibly wondering if that applies to everything and clearly that’s not the case. Jantsch only refers to the positive “stuff”. If you do something negative and do it for a long time you will (hopefully) get in trouble, but you knew that anyway. Sometimes quotes would need to be a bit longer to cover all eventualities, but then they lose their snappyness. :-) But do the good things for a long time and you will be successful!

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
There are still a good few Chinese New Year Festival events, but the best one that is suitable for everyone is the Family Day on Sunday in the CHQ Building. During the week, Green Drinks Dublin is happening again, but the topic is not the most exciting this time. MUCH more interesting will be the new Science Gallery exhibition, though. It is about robots and will start with the launch on Thursday.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!
With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide three weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we only managed to raise EUR 830. About 200 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for about 3 months. So your help is still needed!!!
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Last year of Dublin Food Co-op in its current form!?
The Dublin Food Co-op, a great cooperative for people that are interested in better quality food (organic & fairtrade & environmentally-friendly), but possibly even more relevant for all of us, a super venue for events like the Dublin Flea Market, the Fusion Sundays World Culture Market, the Pure Vintage Market and a few other flea market-type events. The Food Co-op’s premises in Dublin 8 is the home for flea market-type events on about 44 Sundays every year.
But the rising tide with increased property prices and new opportunities for developers means that the owner of the building wants to built something else there and consequently the Food Co-op only got another ONE year lease. So by the end of 2017 they will have to move somewhere else and nobody knows yet if the new premises will still be close to the City Centre and/or if they will be suitable for other events like flea markets.
If you have amazing premises that would be perfect for the Food Co-op OR if you want to keep informed, check their website at www.dublinfood.coop/

“Shamrock for Trump? Not in my name!” – Campaign
A signature campaign was started to request the Taoiseach not to go to Washington on St. Patrick’s Day to bring Trump the traditional Shamrock pot and the simple message is
“I want Enda Kenny to be aware that if he does decide to travel to meet President Donald Trump on St. Patrick’s Day, that he is not travelling in my name.”
If you agree, sign here my.uplift.ie/petitions/shamrock-not-in-my-name and if you don’t agree, then don’t sign. Life is quite simple at times. ;-) Nearly 40,000 people have signed and while it is quite unlikely that the Taoiseach will not go, making a statement is still relevant.

Female Speakers in Dublin needed!? Or are you a Speaker, Panelist etc?
Are you female and are a potential speaker, panelists or MC at events etc or do you want to contribute as a judge? Or are you running events and you need female speakers, judges, panelists, MCs etc?
Then you might be interested in a list where all potential speakers etc should put their names on and where people that need speakers etc can find a suitable person. (This is a shared resource, so please don’t mess it up and don’t ever delete anything that was not entered by you.)
The link to the Google Doc is here.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 05 Feb
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Super Bowl LI (51) is one of the biggest sports spectaculars in the world this year. It will take place in Houston, Texas and this year the two teams playing against each other are the New England Partiots and the Atlanta Falcons.
The game starts at 23:30 and continues for up to 4 hours.
Since the Super Bowl is still increasing its audience on our side of the ocean, many pubs will screen the event live. However, make sure that they will show the FULL game. Because it is a Sunday evening, the long running time and the pub rules clash, which doesn’t allow pubs to stay open that late unless they have an extension. A few years ago, some pubs kicked the customers out at half-time, but I seriously hope that doesn’t happen anymore.
Some of the Super Bowls events are free screenings, other are Super Bowl Parties, which are typically not free and often organised by one of the Dublin-based American Football Teams.
Some of the free Super Bowl screenings are taking place here and most start the screening at around 22:00: + Woolshed Baa, Parnell Street, Dublin 1 + The Living Room, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1 + Square Ball, 45 Hogan Place, Dublin 2 + Adelphi. 52 Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1 + Sinnotts, South King Street, Dublin 2 + McSorley’s, Sandford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6 + Fibbers Magee, 80 Parnell Street, Dublin 1
If you don’t want to go to a pub to watch it but rather from the comfy couch at home, BBC (from 23:20) and Sky Sports (from 22:00) will also show the game. Lady Gaga will be the star of the half time show.

Vignettes of a Changing China – Talk

“A Century of Years of the Rooster: Vignettes of a Changing China” is a lecture by Dr Isabella Jackson (Assistant Professor in Chinese History in the Department of History and the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin).
Traditionally, people are warned to expect bad luck in their own year of the Chinese zodiac, so those born in the year of the rooster should beware in 2017. This lecture will trace the life of an imaginary character born in the year of the rooster 1909, looking at how China changed in each year of the rooster during her lifetime, and how these changes would affect her.

The remarkable History of Tea – Talk
14:00 – 16:30, Thu 09 Feb
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
Tea drinking in many Asian cultures is highly ceremonial, especially in China where it first originated. It was first introduced as a medicine and food spice, but has now become the beverage of choice and a way of life. The history of Tea in the Western world was remarkable in that it inadvertently brought about major social changes in China, precipitating the Opium wars of the 1840s and leading to the fastest sailing ships of their day – the Tea Clippers.
Matthew Jebb will give the lecture from 15:00-15:30 and before and after (14:00-15:00 and 15:30-16:30) a traditional Chinese Tea ceremony will take place.
Admission is free. (It is not clear if any booking is required.)

Eugeen Van Mieghem – An Artist of the People – Talk
17:30, Thu 09 Feb
Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
“Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) – An Artist of the People” with Erwin Joos (Curator of the Eugeen Van Mieghem Museum) will introduce the life and work of the painter Eugeen Van Mieghem.
“In the European social art of the turn of the century many artists admired the work of Jean-François Millet and many strove to match this social authenticity. As a child of the port, Van Mieghem did not experience their restlessness. He was fascinated by the colourful hustle and bustle of life at the dockside. His origins determined his later art. He did not need to go in search of inspiration, for the world was on his doorstep. Driven by his youthful idealism, he left behind a unique and enduring oeuvre about the lives of ordinary people in a cosmopolitan seaport.”
Admission is free.

The year of 2017 will be an exciting one to observe China’s role in the global environmental governance. Representations of Time in Irish Literature: 1800 to the Present – Lecture
13:00, Fri 10 Feb
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“Representations of Time in Irish Literature: 1800 to the Present” with Prof. Martin Middeke (Chair of English Literature at the University of Augsburg).
Sounds interesting…at first! Then you read the further information:
“His joint research project with Professor Chris Morash (School of English, TCD) will contend that any experience of time makes up a historically variant phenomenon whose complexity is conditional upon the degree of specialization, differentiation and segmentation of a particular society and culture.”
…and suddenly I am less interested. ;-)

An automation too far? A debate on AI-created art
18:00 – 19:15, Fri 10 Feb
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
Are we entering an ‘AI renaissance’, where human art and culture will be created autonomously by machines? Or is art a uniquely human endeavour and such algorithmic ‘artists’ are just pretenders who create picturesque but ultimately meaningless media?
Join artist, hacker and creative technologist Ross Goodwin and HUMANS NEED NOT APPLY curator William Myers as they debate whether robots can create art, followed by a discussion and audience Q&A.
The evening will start with a screening of SUNSPRING, the world’s first sci-fi short written entirely by an algorithm.

Woodall – Hillary Lloyd – Exhibition Launch
18:00, Fri 10 Feb
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Hilary Lloyd’s work centres on film and video, but she also uses sculpture, painting, collage and installation. For Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Lloyd has constructed a multi-part installation in which film and sculptural elements are interwoven. Central to this installation is a group of new film works in which Lloyd continues to probe the architecture and ambiences of particular places. She integrates sounds and images in ways that challenge typical viewing conventions – sliding from interpretable scenes into ‘abstract’ formulations of colour, shape and light.
The exhibition will be launched on Friday and admission is free.

I needed to renew my car insurance and this is always a good bit of work. Since I made some significant savings a few years ago, I always compare as many as possible insurances every year to see if there is a better offer somewhere.
Last year I didn’t change the insurer, but this year it went a little different. My car is a Mazda with 1.8l and it is 9 years old. I have a full no claims bonus and have my drivers license since I was 18 so for quite a long time. I also am driving in Ireland for many many years, BUT I still have a German drivers license and annoyingly I was caught in last May speeding! Yes, I did drive 6km (!!) faster than allowed and got 3 very very annoying penalty points.
This is the framework and the points and the German license do make things a little less smooth.
The saga started with AIG (last year’s insurer sending me a renewal offer for EUR 780. Not too bad I thought. A few days later they rang me and asked me if I was interested in renewing, so I said I was but hadn’t decided yet. The guy suggested that he will check if there is anything better than EUR 780 he can do and off he went with all his questions. But suddenly we hit a hurdle: He asked me if I had an Irish drivers license and I said that I still (as for the last four years I was insured with them) had my German license. He claims that that was never on their system (which is rubbish) and he would have to recalculate the price. After a few moments he told me that instead of EUR 780, now the best offer was EUR 1040! Wow! Not having had any accident for many years but having a German insurance suddenly increased my risk by nearly EUR 300? How can that happen? He claimed it is because I got my license driving on the other side of the road. But the fact that I am driving nearly longer on the (wrong ;-) ) Irish side of the road than on the German side didn’t impress at all. Well, there was no going back! AIG was not to be my trusted partner in the future, so I started comparing in earnest and I found VERY interesting things.
I found, for example, that Liberty Insurance is TOTALLY incompetent (or alternatively very greedy OR all the other insurances are the incompetent ones). Why? Well, the insurance cost is meant to be calculated based on the risk that you pose to the insurance and you would expect more or less the same price from EVERY insurance, because it can’t be that you are VERY risky for one and not at all risky for the other insurance. But Liberty seems to live on a different planet then the others. They calculated the cost as EUR 1667 !! Wow! That is even more than AIG wanted after the “change”.
Well, since most others quoted around EUR 780-950, I new that AIG and certainly Liberty were completely mad. (HOW can Liberty get any customers with prices like that???)
I also found out that the insurance quote comparison sites are NOT much use. Chill and Sheridan and Compare Insurance all quoted higher prices than I could get elsewhere. So don’t rely on the quality of the comparisons.
AXA was also madly expensive at EUR 1263. Another outlier.
The lowest quotes I got at first from 123.ie and Aviva and I nearly had decided for 123.ie, but then I remembered that I had forgotten to check with Allianz directly. In the past Allianz was always too expensive and I had already received Allianz quotes this time through the price comparison sites. (Compare Insurance quote EUR 993 and Sheridan quoted 853 – How can there be such a difference for the same insurance for the same conditions??? 140 Euro!?)
But then I rang Allianz and I got SOME surprise! They only quoted EUR 604!! That was by FAR the lowest price (but how can it be so much lower than the Allianz price that Sheridan and Compare Insurance quoted???). And compare this to the mad Liberty Insurance once more?!
So, you can guess who I signed the contract with!?
Now, my parameters are different than yours and therefore you could have a completely different result. So I am not saying that you will get the lowest or the highest quote from the same insurances I mention here. But what I am saying is that the work that you have to put into comparing can easily be worth your time! EUR 400 less than the AIG quote? I am happy to compare prices for 2 or 3 hours for that.
So, COMPARE COMPARE COMPARE and do NOT trust ANYBODY in this business. I think they ALL have no clue!
