Hi all!
This week a new Science Gallery exhibition opened. It is called “Humans Need Not Apply” and is about robots, automation and artificial intelligence. It is a very very interesting exhibition and I recommend it to everybody. It is also suitable for all ages. It will be open until mid May, but often if you leave it until later, later never happens! So put it on your list so that you don’t forget!
[ad]
The Big 500 Share is still running and still needs a LOT of support. Check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)
I am posting this Dublin Event Guide again in two stages, but the first stage is already super super late because again I couldn’t keep my eyes open last night- :-( The two stages are: First online on the website and the smart phone app/web app and then I will add more events and send the final edition by mail as soon as it is finished.
This is the FINAL version.
+++++++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good Slot quote is by American Polish Classical Pianist Arthur Rubinstein. He said
I have found that if you love life, life will love you back. – Arthur Rubinstein
I am sure you know that already: There are people who always complain about life. They feel that life is really unfair to them and they are oh so happy to tell everybody about it …ALL THE TIME! Interestingly they always get more and more of what they focus on!
If you want a happy life, focus on the happy things and you will get more happy things. That doesn’t mean that EVERYTHING will be happy, but you will see a difference!!

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, I will pick the first Fusion Sunday World Culture Market in 2017 and definitely the new Science Gallery Exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply”. I can recommend both!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!
With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide four weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we only managed to raise EUR 1000. About 300 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for about 3.5 months. So your help is still needed!!!
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

No Ice Arena for Dublin
An expansion proposal for Liffey Valley included
+ 7000 square metres of additional retail space, + 3800 square metres of restaurants, + 14 screen cinema and + Olympic-sized indoor ice arena for 2500 spectators.
BIG plans! And they got the OK from South Dublin County Council for it in April 2016. Oddly the same council did NOT grant permission to build a multi-story car park for 1800 cars.
It was good news last April, but it didn’t last long. It was announced on Friday that An Bord Pleanala overturned the decision and refused the application because they are concerned about the congestion it could cause on the M50. I can’t assess if the concerns are justified or not, but it is definitely regrettable that this opportunity for getting an ice arena in Dublin is now probably gone again.

Ireland 2040 – How should it look like? – Submissions requested
The National Planning Framework is an initiative by the current government to find out how we (and experts) think Ireland should or will look like in 2040. 2040 is only 23 years away, but Ireland will be unrecognisable in comparison to today. I expect that the job market in Ireland will have changed dramatically, petrol & diesel cars will be phased out and all new cars will have to be electric cars (Holland will enforce that from 2025 already and Germany from 2030!!). Will we have enough housing? Will the Metro North be finished by then? ;-)
What do you think? How do you expect 2040 to be?
Your opinions and ideas are wanted and you can submit them at www.npf.ie (at Share your Views) or via npf@housing.gov.ie until 16 March 2017.

Female Speakers in Dublin needed!? Or are you a Speaker, Panelist etc?
Are you female and are a potential speaker, panelists or MC at events etc or do you want to contribute as a judge? Or are you running events and you need female speakers, judges, panelists, MCs etc?
Then you might be interested in a list where all potential speakers etc should put their names on and where people that need speakers etc can find a suitable person. (This is a shared resource, so please don’t mess it up and don’t ever delete anything that was not entered by you.)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Mother River is a photographic odyssey by the British-Chinese photographer, Yan Wang Preston along the full 6211km of the river Yangtze, China’s ‘Mother River’. From the remote high Tibetan Plateau, through the Three Gorges and on to the river’s end at Shanghai, this series of colour photographs captures the dramatic shifts in landscape and offers fresh perspectives on China’s present-day development. Yan Wang Preston went to sixty-three locations every 100 km of the river’s course and photographed there whatever she found.
This exhibition is part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.
Yan Wang Preston will give a public talk about her work on Saturday 28 January at 12:00.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 11 Feb
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?
About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.
The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.
Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 12 Feb
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The Ultimate Selfie – Talk
13:00 – 14:00, Mon 13 Feb
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
“The Ultimate Selfie: Musings on the Future of Our Human Identity” is a talk by Dr. Jacquelyn Ford Morie, a Virtual Reality expert and works at the UCD College of Engineering and Architecture.
“Identity in today’s world is being radically redefined. We now have more personal control than ever for how we present ourselves in social and connected media. As scientists and developers, we make sophisticated simulations, in which we include a range of characters, but the ultimate question is this: how are we ourselves represented within them? What could we be doing differently? This talk presents a plan for embedding ourselves within simulations that is potentially disruptive, but could revolutionize the way we think about our once and future selves.”

Valentine’s Day
09:00, Tue 14 Feb
Dublin (various locations)
What a pressured day this is!
For many people this is really one of the worst days in the year and that is totally independent from a relationship status.
If you are in a relationship you HAVE to do something, otherwise there is a high risk that you will be in trouble. And it you are not in a relationship but would like to be then you (or others) will make you feel bad about whatever you don’t have. I know there are also other scenarios where people don’t care or agree with their partner to “handle” the day in certain agreeable way, but it still causes some stress.
My suggestion? Relax and celebrate! But stay away from restaurants on that day! No matter what your life situation is all about, find a reason to celebrate. I am sure there something DESPITE all other hardship that is worth celebrating… and if you can’t find a reason, then I will help you! (Contact me through the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Comments!!)
Valentine’s Day is no special day unless you want it to be. So if you want it to be make it special (but don’t just be on your best behaviour ONCE a year!!) And if it causes you stress, then remember that it is just another Tuesday! Not much different than the 07 February or the 21 February!

Emigration: victims no more? – Lecture
19:00, Wed 15 Feb
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
Dr Piaras MacÉinrí (University College Cork) will talk about emigration. This lecture is one of a series taking place as part of the programme around the Beyond Leaving exhibition at the library’s National Photographic archive.
We still think of emigration in terms of tragedy, tears and turmoil. Departure was often final; it was not called the ‘American wake’ for nothing. A thousand songs celebrated nostalgic visions of the homeland, never to be seen again. Memories of childhood places and people were frozen in time. The cold streets of Broadway, or Birmingham, were alien places. – How is it for today’s emigrants? Is this a changed generation, permanently on the move but permanently connected, skyping from Sydney to Skibbereen?
Admission is free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Suicidal Cyclists? – Helmet: Check! Lights: Who cares?
Let me start with the promise that this won’t be one of these many blanket rants about cyclists that we find in plenty of media outlets, but it is an odd observation that I made in the last two week.
I don’t know if this is a new trend or a test of courage or stupidity or suicidal tendency among cyclists?! But in the last two weeks I encountered four (!) cyclists that were perfectly equipped with helmets and a pretty bike and even with lycras, but they completely left out the lights when they cycled at around 19:00/20:00 in pitch dark.
How can this happen? If they think they can be seen without lights or if they think nobody has to see them, then they are idiots. If they were just badly equipped or not serious cyclists or caught out by sudden darkness, I could understand it. But this time of the year, it is more dark then bright and these four were serious cyclists (judging by their good and serious bikes) and they were people that seemingly were aware of the general risk, otherwise they wouldn’t wear a helmet. ALL four wore a helmet!!!
How can you leave the house and check if you have your helmet and your bike and your bike lock and if you have put your lycras on, but then leave the lights behind? How can you think that it is in any way safe to cycle anywhere if you don’t have strong front and back lights?
Sure it can happen that you forget something (even lights) or that you run out of batteries/charge, despite otherwise really good planning. But FOUR forgetful cyclists in two weeks? Do they maybe really not realise that they are virtually invisible in the night?
Odd!!
