Hi all!
The Big 500 Share started ok, but still needs a LOT of support. Check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book!!! ;-)
[ad]
The 501st Dublin Event Guide is so late again because I fought against sleep (I work through the night when I compile it) and this time I lost. Darn!
So I am posting this Dublin Event Guide again in two stages: First online on the website and the smart phone app/web app and then I will ad more events and send the final edition by mail as soon as it is finished.
This is the FINAL version.
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
In this week’s Feel Good Slot I will give you a great quote from Paramhansa Yogananda (Author of “Autobiography of a Yogi”). He said:
“If you want to be sad, no one in the world can make you happy. But if you make up your mind to be happy, no one and nothing on earth can take that happiness from you.”
This really says, YOU own your feelings and YOU can change them if you want. Sure there are definitely external factors to life. Not everything will be happy and great. But it is your decision how you react to the challenges that life puts your way. You can decide if you want to be happy DESPITE these challenges.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week we started The Big 500 Share and all donors will be mentioned next week here. Thanks a lot for all your help and please keep helping. Find out more in the Dublin News.
I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week a few festivals start again, there will be the Banjo & Bovril Traf & Folk Festival in Bray and closer to home the Temple Bar Traf Festival, both with lots of free events. If you like Table Tennis, check out the tournament in the Workman’s Club.
And the Design & Violence exhibition in the Science Gallery is closing this week, so this is your last chance!

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!
With last week’s 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide /70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed end of February or early March and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we only manaeged to raise EUR 630. About 200 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 2 months. So your help is needed!!!
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 21 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This is the last chance to see this exhibition, which will close on Sunday:
The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.
It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.
From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 22 Jan
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Tree Planting in Wicklow
11:00 – 13:15, Sun 22 Jan
Laragh, Co. Wicklow
The Native Woodland Trust is inviting volunteers to help with a tree planting on Sunday. Here are all the details as described by them:
Our young Laragh woodland is located in an area with beautiful views. We are working on creating a native woodland and we are making good progress. For our first planting day of the year we would love to see as many volunteers as possible to get hundreds of trees planted. There is a short, steep slope to get to the site and so this is not suitable for everyone. Please note that this event is on a Sunday.
Meeting Point: Trooperstown Forest car park, on the r755 between Annamoe and Laragh, Wicklow Map: www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zZVQqySnJ8Ws.kyEkXBcLB_J8
WHAT TO BRING:
We provide the tools and gloves (if you have your own gloves bring them along!). We’ll have oak saplings to plant on the day. You need to have strong footwear and outdoor, weather-appropriate clothing… It’s the Wicklow mountains- beautiful views but this means an exposed site. You should keep nice and warm with the tree planting anyway :) We have a number of flasks of tea and biscuits after the end but feel free to bring along a snack/hot drink yourselves. Any questions contact our Reserves Officer Rebecca (details below).
Location: NWT Laragh reserve, Wicklow Contact: rebecca.doyle@nativewoodlandtrust.ie/ 087 961 9083

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 22 Jan

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

“First Up: Creative entrepreneurs on breaking through” is a series of lunchtime talks from the creative minds at the forefront of Irish culture, science and the arts.
Aoibheann MacNamara and Triona Lillis are passionate about Irish fabrics and they have founded The Tweed Project. “Noticing a lack of contemporary design in the market, they collaborated to create a clothing collection that uses selected cuts of premium Donegal tweed and Irish linen to suit a modern sensibility. Operating from a small atelier in Galway, The Tweed Project is part of The Slow Fashion movement, where fabric, time and craft take priority over trends and fast consumer culture, and each piece is created to last a lifetime.”
Admission to the talk is free, but booking is required via the website below.

There will be an introduction by Deirdre O’Grady.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
ALL American Ambassadors are gone!
ALL American Amabssadors have been removed from their posts and consequently the USA is right now without ANY representatives outside of the USA. In a very strange and definitely unusual move, Donald Trump informed all US Ambassadors around the world tha they will have to have left their post before he became president.
US Ambassadors are usually political appointments and it is not unusual that they change when a new president takes office, but normally there is a grace period to get things organised, to give the existing ambassadors some time to get back home and to appoint the successors. Not this time! And to make things even more harsh, the order was sent to all ambassadors around the world just two days before Christmas on 23 December.
Kevin O’Malley, the most recent US Ambassador to Ireland, who is an Irish American attorney from St. Louis was in a plane on Inauguration Day to get back to the US as ordered. He was nominated by Barack Obama on 05 June 2014.
Ireland being at the lower end of the priority list for Ambassador appointments (The position was left vacant for nearly 2 years from December 2012 until September 2014!) might have to wait a while to get the next ambassador.

If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
