A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The Christchurch Fitness Centre will run a fundraiser in aid of CMRF Crumlin on Saturday 03 December.

There will be free drop-in fitness classes and in return they are asking you for donation for the Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin.

The classes on offer will be Animal Flow, Zuu & Zuu Chimp, Boxercise Blast, Mixed Circuit Session and Krav Maga. And there will also be an opportunity to get a massage.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The Spirit of Dublin Fair is an impressive display of products that are made with Teelings Whiskey. 30 businesses show their creations with a certain emphasis on food products.

Dun Laoghaire’s Christmas Festival is a small Christmas Market with a about 10 wooden huts along the “metals”, the area from Meadow and Byrne until LexIcon underneath the Pavilion theatre.

I have to admit that the PR sounded better than the real thing and I was a little disappointed when I went there last Sunday. But considering that Dublin didn’t manage to organise just ONE outside stall, anything is better than nothing.

From March until November the Terenure Village Market normally now takes place in Bushy Park, but for Christmas it returns to where it started. The Terenure Village Christmas Market is back on Terenure Road.

It incorporates the Terenure Christmas Festival with tree lighting ceremony etc, which will happen between 16:00 and 17:00.

The Fabolous Market is a relatively new market that takes place once a month in The George and this Saturday it is a Christmas-themed market.

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. This week the Ha’Penny Market will be a Christmas Market.

Qigong is a traditional Chinese form of meditation coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm state of mind.

Come to this gentle Qigong practice outdoors on the Roof Top Garden of the Library (weather permitting) or indoors with a view of the roof garden. Suitable for all ages.

The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is a weekly market (every Saturday) with approx 16 stalls, music, pizzas from the Big Blue Bus and the Bernard Shaw Garden Bar. Expect vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac and more and DJs will provide the entertainment.

In December this market will have a Christmas flavour and this weekend, it will even be a 2-day market on Saturday and Sunday.

The Retail Park Liffey Valley is hosting their Annual FREE Christmas Family Fun Day on Saturday December 3rd in Unit 3 (beside Maxi Zoo) at the retail park from 12:30pm – 3:30pm.

Enter a Winter Wonderland for one day only with festive spirit and giveaways for every child.

The Liffey Valley Retail Park is inviting to a Christmas Family Fun Day. There will be a Santa ‘meet and greet’, family portraits, facepainting and balloon modelling. In addition a Christmas scavenger hunt around the retailers will happen where you can win prizes.

Join Santa’s elves in their workshop for ‘make-and-do’ activities. Enjoy some Christmas story time and a magic show with a complimentary cup of hot chocolate for all who come along.

We are not that close to the Polar and according to the Dublin Bay Buoy, the water temperature is at the time of writing this 4 degrees warmer (!) than the air temperature. So the statement “the Polar Plunge dares you to jump into freezing cold water” might just be a little too dramatic, BUT this is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics so we are ok with a little bit of drama to get a good crowd. ;-)

Jump into the water at the 40ft in Sandycover and help the Special Olympics with your entry fee of EUR 15 at this event. Or alternatively watch the mad people ;-) who jump into the sea in December.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Santa Dash is a 5 or 10km run in Santa Suit! It is not a free event, but if you want to see hundreds of Santas running down the beach on Bull Island, then you have to be at this event and the watching is free.

Every participant (EUR 25) gets a Santa Suit and the runners won’t get their medal unless they are wearing that suit, so you can certain that the vast majority will do the run dressed up,

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. There will be Food Stalls, Flea Market, Vintage Clothing, Arts&Crafts and a Pop-Up Record Store.

The Kilkenny Shop Cafe is inviting to a Jazz Brunch Sunday every Sunday. They don’t specify who is playing at the brunch, I will see if I can find out more.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit and there will be a Christmas theme going as well!

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

Italian Writer Giorgio Bassani’s 100th anniversary is celebrated with the film screening of “La Selva delle Lettere” in Italian with English subtitles.

“Rakugo: Traditional Storytelling in Contemporary Japan” with Till Weingärtner (UCC) is the next lecture in the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies Public Evening Lecture Series.

Rakugo storytelling might initially appear to be an anachronism. Dressed in a Kimono, the lone performer entertains the audience with very traditional comic monologues, thereby evoking a feeling of nostalgia and longing for the past. Every year a crib with live animals puts up camp outside Mansion House for the pre-Christmas period. The animals will be brought there in the morning and taken back to their stables in the evening and admission to the crib is free.

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino (closed for Winter)
+ Rathfarnham Castle
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange

The exhibition will be presented by Svetlana Pironko, publisher at Betimes Books, and excerpts read by Anne Nakache and Georgina Polhill. The book and limited edition prints signed by the artist will be on sale during the launch.

The Luna Boys will play a gig in the Harbour Bar. They call their genre “BOOM Grass”.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A live music open mic session, called “Keep on Trucking” takes place every Thursday in Peadar Brown’s Pub, it is presented by Joey Magic.

The Forecourt at the Bank of Ireland on College Green will be the home of a “Designer Dublin Christmas Market” on Friday and Saturday.

Arts, Craft and Designer Products will be on sale.

Christmas at CHQ is a small Christmas-themed market in the CHQ building with arts, crafts and food products.

It is not the successor of the George’s Dock CHristmas Market from previous years!

The market runs from Thursday until Sunday every week until Christmas.

Dun Laoghaire’s Christmas Festival is a small Christmas Market with a about 10 wooden huts along the “metals”, the area from Meadow and Byrne until LexIcon underneath the Pavilion theatre.

I have to admit that the PR sounded better than the real thing and I was a little disappointed when I went there last Sunday. But considering that Dublin didn’t manage to organise just ONE outside stall, anything is better than nothing.

Poetry Ireland are running a Pop-Up Christmas Shop from Thursday 08 Dec until Saturday 10 Dec. There will be literary-related and creative gifts from some of the cultural organisations in Dublin 1 (e.g. Poetry Ireland, Irish Writers’ Centre, Irish Heritage Trust, Gate Theatre, Abbey THeatre and many more) and mulled wine will also be available.

On Sat 10 Dec at 13:00, singer Lisa Lambe will perform.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

With over 100 stalls, this is one of the biggest Christmas Markets in Dublin. Not a Christmas Market in the traditional sense, but a Market for goods that people give as presents at Christmas.

It is indoors at Smithfield and runs over three days from Friday until Sunday.

The Dublin Flea Market takes place every month in the Food Co-op, but once a year at Christmas, that place is much too small. For the second year the Dublin Christmas Flea Market takes place at the Point Village near the Gibson Hotel and the Point Theatre (aka 3 Arena).

More than 70 stalls will be there and the market runs from Friday until Sunday.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

Artist Fiona Hallinan will present some of her recent and upcoming projects including the Department of Ultimology and Fink’s at Grazer Kunstverein.

The 22nd Yearly Schrödinger Lecture takes place on Friday in the Schrödinger Lecture Theatre, School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin. Professor Nick Barton of the Institute of of Science and Technology Austria will talk about “Reflections on Schrödinger’s ‘What is life?’”

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet at the Martello Tower car park in Sandymount for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

This event happens regularly on a Friday and is followed by a similar evening in Clontarf on Saturday.

The Public Star Party is weather dependent, so check www.irishastrosoc.org/events/events.htm after 18:00 on the night in the case of poor weather, to see if it is going ahead.
