Hi all!
This is not a mirage and not a test either! :-) This is actually this week’s Dublin Event Guide in front of you and it is a good bit earlier. The reason? I started working on it already on Monday, because I will be in Eastbourne this weekend. (Visiting relatives!)
[ad]
In an ideal world, LOADS more Dublin Event Guide readers would look at this event guide, but it seems more that every week the same of you check it out, independent from the actual sending time. It surprises me a little, but it is what it is. ;-)
If you are mainly here for Christmas Markets, or if you want to have a separate, focused list for Christmas Markets, check them out at www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com
This is the FINAL edition, because this week there was no preliminary edition. :-)
Thanks to one generous donor (I appreciate your help Juliana!) the bill for November is covered! What a relief! And two others helped carving away from the EUR 190 needed for December. The outstanding amount therefore is EUR 170. Thanks to all generous helpers! :-) If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!! Make a difference here!
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is video clip about a great 12 year old boy who spends hours on his sewing machine, making cuddley toys for kids in hospital and other sick people. What a child!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Juliana AY, Elaine K and Ann M were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend check out the Christmas Markets. They are starting and will get more and more with the busiest weekend on 10+11 December. Other events are pushed a little aside, but that’s ok, it is only for a short period of time.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Christmas Shopping and the Dublin Event Guide
It is a never ending quest to get enough money to pay the monthly bills and I am also trying to find some extra funds to pay for the much needed repair of some issues with the smart phone version. This Christmas I have therefore put a full page of online shopping destinations together where you can help the Dublin Event Guide for NO cost to you.
Just go to
www.dublineventguide.com/Shopping.htm
find the online shop you want to buy from and click on it. It will bring you that the relevant page where you now can make your purchase in the normal way.
There are links for Amazon & Ebay, Book Depository, Groupon & LivingSocial, Asos, New Look and Get The Label and a few others. If you click on the banner and then buy, the Dublin Event Guide will get approximately 5% of your purchase price as a commission, but importantly, you don’t pay a cent more then you would otherwise. So without putting your hand in your own pocket, you can help!!
If you do that for all your online Christmas shopping, maybe even share the link to the page with your friends, you will help hugely!

Christmas FM is back on air
The hugely popular seasonal radio station “Dublin Christmas FM” is back. Launched officially on Monday at lunchtime, the station will play Christmas songs day and night from now until 25 Dec via the Internet (www.christmasfm.com) and on FM frequency 105.2 (in Dublin). More than 100 volunteers will run the station for the next month and they will hope to collect more than EUR 250,000 this year for Focus Ireland.

And these are some links for your Christmas Shopping:
By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Every click counts! Thanks!

The Eatyard
The Eatyard is a brand new food market space at 9-10 South Richmond St right next door to The Bernard Shaw Pub. The aim with Eatyard is to “elevate Irish Street Food to a new level and bring a unique casual dining experience to Dublin”. Sounds interesting.
So there are 16 food and drink stalls/shops/tents/trailers, for example Box Burger, Pitt Bros, Veginity, Pieman, Dublin Doughnut Company and others that are open all week until late? No, not like that. The opening days are Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Which is enough. But the opening hours surprise a little. The Eatyard is open from 12:00 until the super early last order of 20:00. Seems a little too early for last orders!?
And unfortunately there is another aspect that sounds very odd: There is an admission charge after 17:00!! We are not used to pay an admission charge of EUR 2 per person to enter a restaurant or a pub, so why should there be an admission charge at a car park with a few food stalls?
Yes, you can become a member of Bodytonic (That’s the people who own the Bernard Shaw Pub.). Membership is free and when you are a member then you won’t have to pay the admission charge. So the EUR 2 are not really needed then? Because everybody could become a member and then no money will be raised at the door. But why then charge them?

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Wandering Arpilleras: from Chile and beyond – Patchwork Pictures
24 Nov – 12 Dec (Mon-Thu 14:00-19:00, Fri+Sat: 12:00-14:00)
Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2
Arpillera (Patchwork Pictures) is the term used for the colourful pictures made in many parts of Latin America, by appliquéing scraps of fabric onto a larger rustic (hessian) backing. During the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile they became politically significant since working-class women used them to depict the reality of life under military rule. As the arpilleras escaped the scrutiny of the male-dominated regime, they provided women with a means of recording events as well as obtaining income from abroad.
This exhibition in the Instituto Cervantes consists of 21 Arpilleras from Chile, Northern Ireland, Spain, the UK and Zimbabwe. They were created between 1977 and 2015.
Admission is free.

Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival

Dun Laoghaire’s Christmas Festival is a small Christmas Market with a about 10 wooden huts along the “metals”, the area from Meadow and Byrne until LexIcon underneath the Pavilion theatre.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 03 Dec
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.
It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.
From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

2016 Polar Plunge
13:00, Sat 03 Dec
Forty Foot, Sandycove, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
This is not a free event, but you might be interested in watching it and watching is free:
We are not that close to the Polar and according to the Dublin Bay Buoy, the water temperature is at the time of writing this 4 degrees warmer (!) than the air temperature. So the statement “the Polar Plunge dares you to jump into freezing cold water” might just be a little too dramatic, BUT this is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics so we are ok with a little bit of drama to get a good crowd. ;-)
Jump into the water at the 40ft in Sandycover and help the Special Olympics with your entry fee of EUR 15 at this event. Or alternatively watch the mad people ;-) who jump into the sea in December.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 04 Dec
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 04 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Rakugo: Traditional Storytelling in Contemporary Japan – Talk
18:30, Mon 05 Dec
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“Rakugo: Traditional Storytelling in Contemporary Japan” with Till Weingärtner (UCC) is the next lecture in the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies Public Evening Lecture Series.
Admission is free.
Rakugo storytelling might initially appear to be an anachronism. Dressed in a Kimono, the lone performer entertains the audience with very traditional comic monologues, thereby evoking a feeling of nostalgia and longing for the past. However, it is still very much alive in the 21st century: Performers, fans and journalists even speak of a new “Rakugo Boom”.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 07 Dec
Various heritage locations in Dublin
Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + The Casino, Marino (closed for Winter) + Rathfarnham Castle + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Temple Bar Tradfest 2017
25-29 January 2017
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar Tradfest won’t happen until the end of January, so there is still plenty of time to talk about it, right? Well, yes, we can talk about it again in a few weeks, but I want to make sure that the “talking about it” is: “Imagine what great tickets I got”, not “Aww, all booked out, I didn’t get tickets for the gig I wanted to go to.”.
So, the Temple Bar Trad Fest is made up of lots of gigs that are not free, but there are also lots of gigs that are free! Tickets are already available and for the free gigs, you should go here: frontrowsessions.tickets.ie/
The website that contains all non-free gigs but currently doesn’t seem to have a link to the free gigs (!) is here: www.templebartrad.com/

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
President Higgins’ visual impairment!?
Visual impairment is no fun in most cases. It is certainly not a choice and impacts the life of every affected person in a HUGE way. “Normal” seeing people expect that they have a field of vision of a good bit more than 180 degrees (including peripheral vision). So, imagine how it would affect you if out of 180 degrees a massive piece of that semi circle was missing. Blacked out or so hazy that you can’t make out what is there.
No severe medical condition regarding his eyesight is known about Michael D. Higgins, the President of Ireland. But it seems that the piece of that semi circle that he can’t seen can easily hold between 10,000 and 100,000 people. Because that’s the number (10,000-100,000) that were killed by the state in Cuba. At least 78,000 are estimated to have died trying to flee Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. (see www.quora.com/How-many-deaths-was-Fidel-Castro-responsible-for )
Fidel Castro was a brutal dictator in Cuba! Yes, there are some good things that he did in the areas of medicine and education, for example. But any absolutist leader will achieve SOME positive things and wil help SOME people. Even Hitler and Stalin did some positive things.
But how can you completely ignore the oppression of the people of a whole country, the killing of up to 100,000 and the fact that in all Castro’s years in power, he didn’t allow a single free election? How can you be soo blind that you talk of Fidel Castro as a leader “whose view was not only one of freedom for his people but for all of the oppressed and excluded peoples on the planet”. Freedom of his people!?!?!?!? He killed 78,000 who were prepared to risk their lives to get away from that freedom! He did give his people so much freedom that they weren’t allowed to vote once in nearly 50 years? And Fidel Castro the dictator, the oppressor allegedly cared about “all of the oppressed ..on the planet”?
No big problem, if Mr Higgins (or Comrade Higgins) has that opinion. Still wrong, but who cares about his ideology. But it was an absolutely shocking statement by a president of a democratic European country.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
