Hi all!
Happy New Year!! I hope you had a great Christmas and will have a brilliant 2017!
This is the 498th edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and have a look in the Dublin News for a suggestion how we could celebrate the 500 editions soon. And also have a look in the Feel Good Slot section for some great advise on how to create good and successful goals for 2017.
[ad]
In this edition many “Regular Events” are listed again but I am not 100% sure if they will all be back already. Some organisers wait until the second week in January before the re-start their events. So be prepared that a few of these “Regular Events” are not yet up and running in 2017.
Now have a great, smooth and trouble-free transition into the first day of 2017 and then continue it as you have started! :-)
Thanks to some very helpful Dublin Event Guide supporters, the EUR 190 monthly bill for January was already helped to the tune of EUR 50, so we only need to gather EUR 140 in January to pay all the bills. Thanks a lot to all helpers! If YOU also can help in any way, I would appreciate it very much! Make a difference here!
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
2016 is nearly done and I wonder if around this time last year you promised yourself that you would be in a different by the end of this year? Have you said or might you say the words “2017 will be different!” or “This time next year….” when it comes to New Year’s Eve? Many will and you are not alone! So what will make the difference? What will ensure that you hit all of your goals and end up exactly where you want his time next year?
To achieve that, you YOU NEED TO TAKE ACTION! A goal without action is just a dream.
So every year, the Feel Good Slot around the change of the year deals with setting and achieving goals.
This time it is a chapter from a Personal Power training course by Tony Robbins. It is a full workshop and is therefore quite loooooong (1hr 8 min!!), but it is DEFINITELY worth that time if you really want to know how to set goals effectively. Check it out here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcF_JcO5ss4

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Shai C, Margo C, Majella M and Tania Z were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, my pick is the NYF Dublin with plenty of free events throughout the city to keep you busy on Saturday and Sunday.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500!!
This week’s edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is No 498! So we are only two editions away from 500 editions and some people have suggested to me that this big occasion has to be celebrated with something special. I think this is a great idea and the great Liz D had a suggestion that I paticularly like. A name for it has not been decided yet, but let’s call it “The Big 500 Dublin Event Guide Share” for now.
The idea is that we help each other and others to ensure that everybody benefits! It would look like this: You donate some money to the Dublin Event Guide, to enusre that the online versions can be fixed and the newsletter will continue throughout 2017. As a thank you for your donation, you will get a “Secret Dublin” Visitor Guide that will tell you about some of the lesser known and near-secret locations for really interesting free family visits in Dublin (it will be finished in early March) and you will help the Dublin Event Guide to continue to bring you all the great free events news that you love. You will also be able to help me decide which charity will get a percentage of all the donated money.
So, you get the “Secret Dublin” Visitor Guide, you continue to get the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and a Dulin-based charity that we choose together will get some much needed help. And in addition you help me making the Dublin Event Guide better and bigger!
This is just an early heads-up! so that you can think about it AND make suggestions for how to run it and what to call it and anything else you would like to contribute. We have two weeks to get everything sorted and then will launch it with the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide on 13/14 January.
Send me your comments and suggestions via dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Big500”. Thanks!!!

New Years Festival
Unlike in previous years, there will be no main event/concert at College Green this year on New Year’s Eve, instead that event has moved to St. Stephen’s Green South. It is not a free event, but tickets are still available (EUR 27.90). Walking on Cars and The Blizzards are the headline performers.
There is no fire works display in Dublin and there is no (free) mass get together anywhere to start the new year. Look at Sydney or London or Berlin or New York to see how New Year’s Eve could (and should) be celebrated.
There are however a whole range of events during the NYF (New Years’s Festival) in Dublin on 30+31 December and 01 January and a number of them are free: www.nyfdublin.com/

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

“The Wild is a celebration of the networks and communities, friends and co-conspirators, memories and visions of Project Arts Centre by the creatives and artists at the heart of the organisation. It is a collaborative group show that will change, evolve and develop over time, as practices and art forms collide, collaborate, push and pull together and apart. Experiences and artworks will accumulate, and the show will shape-shift, grow and shrink at will.”

New Year’s Eve
08:45, Sat 31 Dec
Dublin (various locations)
If you are visiting Ireland from abroad or if you are here for your first New Year’s Eve, you will probably get disappointed. There will be NO fireworks display and there will be no central event. We have to watch the amazing Fireworks in Sydney, London, Berlin and New York if we want to see a spectacle like that.
So what is there to do? There is an outdoor gig at St. Stephen’s Green with live bands and it seems that tickets are still available for it for approx. EUR 27. Apart from that, it is the usual: Pubs and clubs! But watch out: There are a good few venues that provide exactly the same entertainment as every weekend throughout the year, but on New Year’s Eve they think a whopping admission charge is justified that they wouldn’t dare charging during the year. Avoid these venues! There are plenty others that don’t charge an admission charge.

The main event New Year’s Eve, a gig with “Walking on Cars”, “The Blizzards”, Brian Deady and “Little Hours” is not on College Green this year, but at St. Stephen’s Green. Admission is not free, though.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.

New Year’s Day No.2
08:45, Mon 02 Jan
Dublin (various locations)
Because New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday and because we have so few public holidays in Ireland that we can’t afford to waste them, the public holiday that should have been yesterday will be observed/celebrated today.
So office workers have another day off, but unfortuantely people working in shops (and hospitals and many other sectors) never get the same good treatment. You should get a day in lieu, though!
I expect that nearly all shops will be open today and from tomorrow, life will be back to “normality”.

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:30 – 18:00, Mon 02 Jan
St. Martin Apostolate, 42 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids could be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation of EUR 1.50 per person is suggested.
The opening times are 21 Nov-08 January: Mon-Fri 14:00-18:00 and Sat+Sun: 11:30-18:00. (Closed on 24+25+26 Dec and 01 Jan)

11:30 – 18:00, Tue 03 Jan

Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 04 Jan
Various heritage locations in Dublin
Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + The Casino, Marino (currently closed for Winter) + Rathfarnham Castle + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 20:00, Wed 04 Jan
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
From today, the Science Gallery will be open again after their Christmas break.
The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.
It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.
From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Little Christmas + Women’s Christmas
08:45, Fri 06 Jan
Dublin (various locations)
The 6th of January is the main Christmas Day in the Russian Orthodox Church and in Spain, where the three wise men (Reyes Magos) bring the presents. In Ireland it is the feast of Epiphany. the day of the three wise kings, and also Little Christmas and Women’s Christmas or “Nollaig na mBan”.
And Women’s Christmas (Nollaig na mBan) is the most intriguing of them all: The tradition is (or was) that on that day the women who have worked all over Christmas will get a day off and the men will look after the household duties for one day. The women go out and celebrate on that day with parties.
Interesting tradition! I am not sure if a one day party makes up for working hard over the whole Christmas period, but I guess one day off is better than no day off. Do you know if that is still properly observed anywhere?

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate
11:30 – 18:00, Fri 06 Jan

Temple Bar Tradfest 2017
25-29 January 2017
Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Temple Bar Tradfest won’t happen until the end of January, so there is still plenty of time to talk about it, right? Well, yes, we can talk about it again in a few weeks, but I want to make sure that the “talking about it” is: “Imagine what great tickets I got”, not “Aww, all booked out, I didn’t get tickets for the gig I wanted to go to.”.
So, the Temple Bar Trad Fest is made up of lots of gigs that are not free, but there are also lots of gigs that are free! Tickets are already available and for the free gigs, you should go here: frontrowsessions.tickets.ie/
The website that contains all non-free gigs but currently doesn’t seem to have a link to the free gigs (!) is here: www.templebartrad.com/

Bad bad 2016!? – Celebrity Deaths
In 2016 a relatively large amount of celebrities died. There was David Bowie, Prince, Alan Rickman, George Michael, Muhammad Ali, Gene Wilder, Leonard Cohen, Carrie Fisher and many others that unfortunately left us in this year. Some died of illnesses other of other health reasons and others again because they had reached the age where their bodies decided to pack it in.
Importantly there was absolutely no link between the deaths, but oddly many Twitter and Facebook users and even some “news websites” tried to “blame” 2016 on it. With common statements after another death like “2016 you can f*ck right off” and similar.
Yes, it was a relatively large amount and there are good reasons for it, but the reactions were just nonsensical bordering on stupid.
If people switched their brains on and thought for a second, they would realise a number of things: + We know a much higher number of “celebrities” than any generations before us. That has to do with the Internet, with our global media outlets and with the fact that it is a lot easier to become a “celebrity” in the last 20-40 years than ever before. + Many of the celebrities we grew up with are – surprisingly – ageing like us. So if we get older then they also get older. With increasing age the risk of illnesses increases and – oddly – the risk of death is much higher for old people than for young people.
What does that mean? It means that the dying will continue! 2017 will probably see a similar high number of deaths. When will it end? When the end has reached us! I know that sounds brutal, but I see it happening with my parents, for example. They are at a funeral for people that they knew well during their life nearly every week and bit by bit, the friends and family get thinned out and you feel the unavoidable end coming closer and closer.
A very morbid tone for the last This is Odd in 2016? Yes, it is dealing with death, but it is something we will all need to deal with at some stage and stupid statements like “Stop that 2016!” are not facing up to facts about life.
So how should we react? The best approach is always to appreciate the fact that the people that pass away have been with us. To remind ourselves what nice memories we have and to accept that life is terminal. Only that way you can properly deal with it. Grieving is fine, even for someone that you have never met. Some celebrities, like George Michael, really were part of some of our lives. So keep the memories and stop the blaming on a year or other non-related entities and circumstances.
