Hi all!

Here is your newest Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). After another technical issue last night, I have to accept that I need a MAJOR technical overhaul of the Dublin Event Guide platform (back-end, database, website and smart phone site). It takes hours to fix problems and they might only be fixed for a week or two. So my next challenge is to find money for that because I can do some but not all on my own. Any sponsors out there? Corporate sponsors maybe? If not, I will ask for Christmas presents. :-P Anything helps. Or maybe someone who would want to help? Let me know!

I will have to publish again in two stages: First on the smartphone app and on the website, then more events will be added and in about 2 hours the mail will be sent. I am running soooo late. There are already more than 180 events in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are LOTS more that I have to add, even for today. So I will update the smart phone up every 15 minutes and the website every 30 minutes.

[ad]

This is the FINAL edition.

This month’s outstanding bill is still EUR 160. If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!! Make a difference here!

++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a proverb that you probably have heart before, but it is good to remember it, so here it is:

Our greatest glory is, not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. – Ancient Proverb

And if you want to be more successful, you have to fail more!! Success can’t happen without failure!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Geraldine R and Ciara L were the wonderful people who helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is a great monthly event that you should put on your list and then on Sunday and next Thursday I have to mention the lighting of the Christmas Lights in Dublin. It is Christmas! ;-) Another big event during the week is Science Week! Check it out. Lots of free events. SO many that they are not all mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide.

Competitions

Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte” – Ticket Competition

Thu 24 Nov – 19:45 at The Teachers’ Club, 36 Parnell Sq West, Dublin 1
Sat 26 Nov – 19:45 at Marino Institute of Education, 9 Griffith Av., Dublin 9

There is nothing like opera sung live and the Dublin Opera Studio presents this great opera with talented singers from Ireland and abroad. As a comedy with light-hearted music this is enjoyable for anyone, even if you have never been to an opera before! It’s about 2 guys who disguise themselves to prove the fidelity of their girlfriends to win a bet but it’s not as simple as they initially expected due to the scheming of a sly old man.

The Opera will be performed in costume with a simple set, it will be slightly cut (to remove any boring parts!), sung in Italian with English surtitles and accompanied by piano.

Tickets are EUR 15/10 and you can get tickets and find more information at www.dublinoperastudio.com

The Dublin Opera Studio made a pair of tickets available for a Dublin Event Guide reader and you can choose on which day you want to go.

To enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “COSI FAN TUTTE” as the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Please also tell me which day would suit you? Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Monday 21 November.

Speedfriending – Ticket Competition

Sat 19 Nov – 18:00
Trinity Bar & Venue, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Dereck Phelan has another opportunity for you to win tickets to his Speedfriending event. If you would like to meet new people and maybe make some new friends, this event could be for you. It is a low-pressure way to meet new people fast. It is not a dating event, but works similarly to Speeddating: You have 5 minutes with each person to talk about your likes and dislikes and then you move on to the next person. There will be a break (with finger food) and after the event there is plenty of time to talk to some longer than just 5 minutes.

Admission is EUR 10. Register on www.meetup.com/EventsDrinksTalksDublin/events/234407111/

Dereck has given me 5 tickets for a competition. So if you want to go to this event, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with “SPEEDF Nov” in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 14:00 on Wed 16 November.

Promote your product or event through a competition!

If you want to reach more than 24,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

8 SIMPLE TIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR EVENT OFFLINE
The Internet makes everything so much easier nowadays, including marketing. When it comes to event promotion, however, the need to diversify your approach shouldn’t be ignored, as different demographics can respond really well to that offline touch (including Millennials). Promoting your event offline just might give you that extra bit of leverage to get your attendance numbers up, so here are 8 different options for you to consider.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Islamic Art Exhibition

Dublin Remembers: Stories from the Somme

22 Oct – 23 Dec (Mon-Thu 10:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 10:00-17:00)

Dublin City Library & Archive, 138 Pearse Street, Dublin 2

This exhibition focuses on personal stories of individual Irish men who fought at the Battle of the Somme from July – November 1916 (mainly serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers). Some were killed, others injured and the ones who survived unscathed returned to an Ireland which was radically different following the Easter Rising in April 1916.

The exhibition includes photographs, medals, uniforms and other original artefacts – including audio recordings from selected letters and diaries from soldiers describing life in the trenches to loved ones back home. Interview footage from the RTÉ Archives provides further eye-witness testimony.

The Wild – Collaborative Group Show

11 Nov – 28 Jan (Mon-Sat 11:00-20:00)

Project Arts Centre, 39 Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“The Wild is a celebration of the networks and communities, friends and co-conspirators, memories and visions of Project Arts Centre by the creatives and artists at the heart of the organisation. It is a collaborative group show that will change, evolve and develop over time, as practices and art forms collide, collaborate, push and pull together and apart. Experiences and artworks will accumulate, and the show will shape-shift, grow and shrink at will.”

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Nov

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

End Direct Provision System – Protest

13:30, Sat 12 Nov

Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1

Refugees and Asylum seekers in Ireland are not allowed to work. So they need to get help to survive and it could take years until a decision about their status is made. However instead of getting money, they will supplied with goods (food, clothes, hosuing etc). It totally destroys the self-worth of the individuals and is a very inefficient system and I am sure there are MANY other problems with that system.

On Saturday a protest march against the Direct Privision System will take place. It starts at 13:30 at the Garden of Remembrance and the march will then go to the Central Bank Plaza in Dame Street.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 13 Nov

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

———–

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

———–

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

March Against Corruption and Pay Increases – Protest

14:00, Wed 16 Nov

Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1

A Facebok Event Page asks you to come to a “March Against Corruption and TD Pay Increases”, but since this march is planned for a Wednesday afternoon, I am not sure if this is a genuine event.

If it genuine (and that is definitely possible!), then the organisation doesn’t seem to be keen to maximise the effect of their event because if only a handful of people attend (I would assume that most people work around that time!) they might do more damage to their reputation and cause then good.

In small farming communities, circulation of crop varieties is often channelled by marriage networks. This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

US Elections – The UN-democratic Democracy!

Every democratic country tries to adopt a system that is as democratic as possible while at the same time protecting the interests of the ruling parties. We have that in European countries (including Ireland!) and we have the same in the US. But depending if you are on the winning side or on the losing side, some of these un-democratic rules can be particularly upsetting.

Most of us experienced this on Wednesday after the US Presidential election. It all happened in a country geographically far away and we were not even allowed to vote, but to think that it won’t affect us would be a big mistake. So the whole world had a stake or at least a keen interest in the US elections and the shock afterwards was HUGE. I don’t think I saw any non-election related Facebook message on Wednesday or Thursday.

It is bad news that a misogynistic, racist egomaniac who has not the slightest bit of political experience and who has frightening views in nearly every area from the use of nuclear weapons to climate change and from the building of a wall on the Mexican border to his opinion about Russia’s Vladimir Putin will become the new president and many couldn’t understand how the votes could get it so wrong.

But interestingly, the voters didn’t get it THAT wrong. A majority of voters voted for Hillary Clinton. Not a BIG majority but Hillary Clinton got 60,231,953 votes which is 47.7% and Donald Trump got 59,893,663 votes, which is 47.4%. So the difference is only approximately 330,000 votes, but it is a definite majority for Hillary Clinton on what the Americans call, the “popular vote”. The decider, however, is the “electoral vote” and that is a very odd system. The electoral vote was won by Trump with 289 votes versus Clinton’s 228 votes. (Michigan and New Hampshire are not finally counted yet, so another 21 votes have to be distributed.)

So the next president of the biggest democratic nation in the world is NOT the person that got most of the votes in a democratic election, but the person that only came second. ODD!

Have a look at this video clip here if you want to understand more about how the Electoral College concept works.
