Hi all!
So frustrating. This week my plans where really good for the Dublin Event Guide work approach, but it fell apart. Have a look at the Dublin News for a change of tactic! …and thanks for your understanding and your support! And then I had a technical problem on top of all that: I wasn’t able to save the compiled Event Guide for more than two hours! The gods are against me this week. :-(
[ad]
I know the Dublin Event Guide is useless for Saturday now, but hopefully you can still benefit from it for the rest of the week. You can’t imagine my frustration this week and when I get LOADS of unsubscribe once it is sent, this is not getting better.
Because of the technical problems, I wasn’t able to update the Website and Smartphone app during the day. Sorry!
The new month has started and miraculously we managed EXACTLY (on the cent!) to clear last months bill in the last week of September. A HUGE thank you to all helpers!! In October, I need to find EUR 190 again (it never stops!) and I need your help with that, so if you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Make a difference here!
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is by T. Harv Eker. Many have never heard his name, but he has been around for a while and he has developed a training course called “Millionaire Mind Intensive” and has written the book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”.
If you want to make a permanent change, stop focusing on the size of your problems and start focusing on the size of YOU!
I have been at the “Millionaire Mind Intensive” training course in London a few years back and really enjoyed it. There are some super powerful learnings in it and while you might not automatically become a millionaire ;-), your financial life will definitely change for the better if you apply some of the learnings of the course.
For many years the event industry has overlooked Ireland and only ran interesting courses in the UK, but luckily they have discovered that we are still there and this is one of still very few full, but low-priced training courses that will be run in Ireland again.
T Harv Eker has given up the teaching business for health reasons, instead Doug Clark one of the Lead Trainers will be in Dublin.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Daire OC, David P, Anne H, Irene C, Comet Records and John F were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend it is quiet out there. Actually VERY quiet. Oktoberfest is coming to an end, the Dublin Senior Football Final will hopefully not end in a draw again and events are moving rapidly inside with the Dublin History Festival and the SpaceWeek being the main free events this week.
But how can it be “quiet” with 200 events in the Dublin Event Guide? Well, that is an odd one: If there is no BIG standout event, but lots of talks, for example, it just FEELS quieter. If you are into history or space things, you will have NOTHING to complain about. And next weekend the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival will happen and during the week the Free Wednesday again, so who said it’s quiet!? Dublin is never quiet! :-)
Enjoy the week!

Alice in Wonderland – Ice Show – Ticket Competition
Thur-Sun 24-27 November 2016 National Show Centre, Swords
Not just one but two amazing shows are coming to Dublin in November. “Alice in Wonderland on Ice” and “Dracula on Ice” will be performed in the National Show Centre by Russia’s Ice Vision performers from 24-27 November and it will be a unique opportunity to see these professional Russian Skaters performing the shows. Ice Vision is based in St. Petersburg and they will be the very first time in Ireland. Have a look at the Dublin News section this week, to find out even more.
Tickets are already available on Ticketmaster and I expect that this event will sell out soon because it is so unique. Go to www.ticketmaster.ie/Alice-In-Wonderland-On-Ice-tickets/artist/5200464 to find tickets for Alice in Wonderland (afternoon performances) and for Dracula on Ice tickets (evening performance), go to www.ticketmaster.ie/Dracula-On-Ice-tickets/artist/5200466.
The organisers of these two events gave me a pair of tickets for the “Alice in Wonderland” show on Thursday 24 November at 15:30 and if you want to win this pair of tickets, you will have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with ALICE in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you need to include the name of the city where the Ice Vision Production Company is based. Your mail has to be with me by 05 October.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide Helpers needed!
I won’t have to tell you that the Dublin Event Guide has a problem, right?! It arrives sooo late with you every Saturday, that you have reaslised that already and maybe you were even thinking about cancelling your subscription to it. Hold off for another bit! I am making big efforts to find a solution to the problem and you wouldn’t want to miss finding out how much better it will get! ;-)
The changes won’t be a big bang and all will be sorted and perfect, no, it will be a gradual (but not stretched out for ages!) process. To achieve that, I need some help and this time I am NOT talking about financial help. I am talking about you considering to give ONE hour per week. But wait, I don’t need hundreds or thousands of people! No, it will have to start very small and then possibly grow further. Three people is probably the max for a start, but to find three, I am asking you all to see if you might be interested and to send a mail to team@dublineventguide.com to tell me if you would be prepared to help.
What do you get back? Unfortunately I won’t be able to pay you and free tickets to free events doesn’t sound THAT tempting either, right. So initially, it will be my thanks AND you will obviously officially be part of the team and will be listed and mentioned as a helper. I will give guidance and depending on your interest, I will definitely have a few ideas how to thank you.
So, if you are interested in helping, send a mail to team@dublineventguide.com and just to make sure that I see it immedaitely, also use TEAM as the subject.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

Techno Gig in Christchurch!!??
Christchurch Cathedral is an expensive building. The up keep of these old buildings eats money like mad and therefore all ways of making cash have to be considered. But I was VERY surprised when I heard that this Saturday evening a Techno gig will happen in the Crypt of the Cathedral. Is it a good use of the venue or is that one step too far? What do you think?
(The Techno gig is not free (EUR 45) and therefore is not mentioned in this Dublin Event Guide.)

Dublin Event Guide in Italy
Don’t worry, the Dublin Event Guide will not move to Italy or become Italian, BUT I will be in Italy next week for a few days and it is the VERY first holiday in the 9 years I am publishing the Dublin Event Guide that I am not in Ireland on the Thursday/Friday to write it. So for the first time therefore the whole Dublin Event Guide will be compiled from abroad.
To do that, I will have to bring two Laptops with me on holidays and a whole range of devices to interconnect them.
The good news is that there will be a Dublin Event Guide even when I am on holidays, but there is also some less good news: I will be about 110km South East of Rome in a tiny little village on top of a mountain and since it is the first week long holiday in many many years, I will probably have lots of other bits to do instead of spending hours upon hours in front of my two Laptops. As a result, the next Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), will possibly be a little thinner/shorter/smaller.
I hope you are ok with that! ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.
Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – October (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Oktoberfest 2016
12:00 – 00:30, Sat 01 Oct
George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
Last weekend!! Now is the time to go if you haven’t been yet.
The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 15 Sept – 02 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.
Opening hours are Mon-Wed 12:00-23:30, Thur-Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.
The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.
Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a food voucher if you want to buy any alcohol. Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 02 Oct
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.
I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

Polish Women on Strike – Pro-Choice Protest
17:30 – 19:00, Mon 03 Oct
Polish Consulat, 4-8 Eden Quay, Dublin 1
On Monday a Silent Protest by Polish Women and their supporters will take place in Dublin in solidarity with the strike by women in Poland.
Last week, the Polish parliament has decided to proceed with a bill that bans abortion with the exception of immediate threat to a woman’s life. If the bill will become law, abortion will be illegal even in cases of risk to a women’s health, fatal foetal abnormalities or when the pregnancy is the result of rape. The bill calls abortion ‘prenatal slaughter’ and will criminalise women.
Major protests will take place in Poland this weekend as part of Czarny Protest (Black Protests) with women and men wearing black to express their rage, but also to mourn for fundamental human rights being refused to women in Poland. The protests will culminate on Monday, when Black Monday happens, a warn strike, with women across Poland taking a day off from work, universities/schools and homes to continue the protests. Many shops, universities and restaurants will be closed or only men will work. This is just the initial warning for the government.
Express your solidarity with Polish women and bring a candle to the Polish Consulate on Monday.

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites
09:00, Wed 05 Oct
Various heritage locations in Dublin
Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.
Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free: + Dublin Castle, State Apartments + The Casino, Marino + Rathfarnham Castle + Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange + Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow
In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) was also on that list, but it was removed some months ago and is sorely missed. There is a high risk that the Free Wednesday will be restricted further in coming months. Use it as long as it lasts.
As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Dada & Hugo Ball’s Sound Poetry – Performance + Talk
18:30, Wed 05 Oct
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
100 years ago the first sound poem “Elephant Caravan/Elefantenkarawane” was performed in Zurich’s Cabaret Voltaire by its founding member Hugo Ball.
“Using no words and involving Cubist costume and recitals of nonsensical syllables has come to represent Dada performance, however, few are aware of the radical nature of this seemingly farcical movement and its role as a precursor to contemporary art and performance today.”
Dr Selena Daly and Dr Tara Plunkett, University College Dublin share their research on this subject and guests artist Sonia Shiel, Sinead Bhreathnach-Cashell and Tzarini Meyler of UCDs Drama Society will perform.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Rewards for people who left the country – Kick in the ass if you weathered the storms!
One of my pet hates is if a company promotes a really attractive Special Offer and then it says in the small print that it is only available to new customers. It is really a kick up the backside of the loyal long term customers who ensured that the company kept going. Instead there should always be an attractive offer for existing customers IN PARALLEL when a new customer offer is promoted. That offer for existing ones doesn’t have to be the same as for the new recruits, but it should also be attractive.
Bad enough when a phone or Internet company does it or a bank or insurance. But now it gets worse.
The bright lights in our current government are thinking about giving a tax discount to some of the people that have left the country to attract them to come back. Many who left, did so to earn more money elsewhere and many who stayed endured a fair amount of hardship during the recession years in Ireland. And by rewarding the ones who earned more away if they come back is really adding insult to injury.
It certainly makes sense to try to get people to come to Ireland if we have jobs here, but if a reward is considered for returning workers, then the ones that kept the country going shouldn’t be rewarded for their part in the recovery.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm .
