A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The National Heritage Week is around the corner! It is a week long festival (20-28 August) that will build awareness and education about our heritage, its conservation and preservation. There will be more than 2000 events all over Ireland and hundreds of them are in Dublin.

From guided tours via concerts and talks to Family events, it will be a very busy week for anybody who is interested in Heritage or at least has an open mind. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon is free for the whole year!!

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The Frank Duffy 10 mile Road Race is one of the training runs in the run up to the Marathon in October. It takes place on Saturday and will be entirely in Phoenix Park. You can cheer the runners on AND you should avoid Phoenix Park at least until around 12:30, better until 13:30.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral is offering an absolutely outstanding programme of events for Heritage Week. They really pulled out all the stops and have something for everybody. There will be Organ Recitals, Bell Ringing, Jazz performances. Classical recitals and Talks & Tours. And everything is completely free (some events do require booking)!

Jugger is a sport inspired by the 1989 movie “The Salute of the Jugger” created by the man behind Blade Runner, it was especially invented for the film. Around the world people thought it looked class and should be a real sport, so they created clubs.

The Irish Jugger clubs in Ireland are hosting an International Jugger Tournament this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in the Wanderers Rugby Club. Come and check this unusual sport and the colourful teams from around the world including Australia, Canada, America, Germany, Spain battle it out in a two day tournament that will be very different to a GAA or soccer match.

Admission for spectators is free.

If you have never heard of Jugger, you can watch some You Tube clips, but I didn’t find a single one that really captures the sport well. I am not an expert, but my understanding is that there is a jugg (a dog’s skull or imitation thereof) and a base at each side of the field. There is ONE runner (Kwik) in each team and only he is allowed to carry the jugg and his job is to bring it to the base on his side to score points. All other battling players (enforcers) are equipped with different type of weapons and are there to protect the Kwik from the opponents. I am sure I got a few things wrong, but if you go to the event on Saturday and/or Sunday, you will find out more. ;-)

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

India Day is organised by the Indian Communities in Ireland to celebrate India’s Independence. There will be a 6 hour programme with cultural performances (music, song and dance), mindfulness workshops, food stalls, craft exhibition, henna and indian dress and jewellery stands.

A detailed line-up or schedule is not available, so you have to go there to find out what happens when and where, but Farmleigh House and Gardens is compact enough so that you won’t get lost. ;-)

Six times will the “People’s Art 2016″ exhibition take place this year. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

(If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions.)

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The market has now grown to 40 stalls offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Watercolour painting “The Meeting on the Turret Stairs” is locked away for the most time to preserve it and to protect its vibrant colours from losing their vibrancy. However, on Saturday to celebrate Heritage Week, the painting will be shown for one hour!!

Admission is free, but a timed-ticketing system will be in operation. No advance booking. Tickets are limited and available on the day, from the Information Desk in the Millennium Wing, on a first-come, first-served basis.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 16 July to 20 August 2015.

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Every week different units will be involved and the ceremony and the participating units are described on the website below.

Qigong is a traditional Chinese form of meditation coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm state of mind.

Come to this gentle Qigong practice outdoors on the Roof Top Garden of the Library (weather permitting) or indoors with a view of the roof garden. Suitable for all ages.

Admission is free and no booking required, but numbers are limited.

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

St Catherine’s Church on Thomas Street is aone of Dublin’s most elegant 18th century churches and is one of the key landmarks of The Liberties. The present Church stands on a historic site, with evidence of a church at this location back to the 12th century.

As part of Heritage Week, St Catherine’s is hosting a Heritage Day on Saturday. There will be guided tours of the historic church at 13:00 and 14:00 (provisionally). Tea and cakes will be available, as well as exhibits, photos and general information for viewing.

Admission is free.

The Icon Walk in Temple Bar is along Adair Lane and Bedford Lane and there will be an arts festival with Singers, Poets & Musicians this Saturday. The Common Grounds Collective with Lemon Cello, Hatchlings, Navy Cut & many more will contribute.

There will also be guided Icon Walk Tours and Live Painting all day.

Admission is free.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is a weekly market (every Saturday) with approx 16 stalls, music, pizzas from the Big Blue Bus and the Bernard Shaw Garden Bar. Expect vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac and more and DJs will provide the entertainment.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher runs every Saturday. It is an alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

Across Africa is the story of Irishman Dr Thomas Heazle Parke’s journey over one hundred years ago exploring the ‘deepest, darkest Africa’ and all the animals and people he met along the way. It is a natural history family fun show full of adventure, danger and jungle.

The event will take place at 14:00 and again at 15:30.

Every Saturday a kid’s book will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below). Suitable for age 0-6 with their parents.

‘Hello Delia Murphy’ features the songs, story and family photos of the Delia Murphy that recorded Blackbird and ‘The Spinning Wheel’ in 1939. It will be presented and performed by her niece Carmen Cullen, with musical accompaniment by Gerry Anderson.

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Saturday at 14:00 until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which so many Irishmen died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

“Movies in the Park” in Marlay Park is a 2-day programme of movie screenings on Sat+Sun at 14:00/16:30/19:00 on each day.

The moveis will be shown on a big 60 square metre LED screen (that’s the size of some 2-bedroom flats in Dublin!).

Admission is free and no tickets are required. Please note that this is an alcohol-free event.

Marlay Park Food Market is open from 11:00-16:00 each day and some vendors will be open until late to provide you with food.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sunday. It is a collection of antiques, furniture, vintage jewellery, collectables and curiosities from the past and present, second-hand, refurbished, antique and hand-crafted stuff for your house and garden. If you are an interior designer or just have and eye for style and are looking for a special piece or maybe a bargain then this is the market for you. The market is held every 3rd Sunday of the month.

Admission is free.

And while you are there, also have a look at the Arts & Crafts Market “Rumble in the Jumble” on the other side of Teelings Distillery in the Food-Coop.

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. There will be Food Stalls, Flea Market, Vintage Clothing, Arts&Crafts and a Pop-Up Record Store.

Admission is free.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

Six times will the “People’s Art 2016″ exhibition take place this year. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Arts & Craft + Bric ‘n’ Brac Market “Rumble in the Jumble” will take place in the Food Co-op.

And while you are there, also have a look at the Brocante Market (Vintage, Retro, Salvage and Antiques) on the other side of Teelings Distillery.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

Every Sunday, the National Botanic Gardens invite to two guided walks. The first one is at 12:00 and the second one at 14:30.

At the Printfest Family Fun Day, discover what life was like for a young apprentice working in the traditional print industry by coming to the Print Museum for an afternoon of printing activities suitable for all the family.

The Print Museum is a great place that many don’t know about or don’t have on their Radar. Check it out, especially if you have kids, most kids love printing and creating and at this Family Fun Day there is a lot to see, do and learn.

The Olympic Fun Fest (brought to you by Dublin City Council) will celebrate Brazil and the Olympic Games.

Join the dance classes with MaSamba Samba School or just watch their dance demonstrations. There will also be street games (including basketball shoot out, sumo wrestling inflatable ring, bouncy boxing ring, soccer penalty shoot out and giant jenga) and food stalls.

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Smithfield Market Fair will take place again in the Generator Hostel at Smithfield Plaza.

There will be over 40 market stalls will be selling Vintage Clothes, Food, Vinyl records, Contemporary Arts, Jewellery pieces and more. Live Music, DJs, sports screenings and possibly also a film screening will provide the entertainment.

And this weekend is also the Olympic Fun Fest on Smithfield Plaza, so you get two events for the price of one! ;-)

This is the 7th year of this great Ukulele Festival in Dun Laoghaire. It is a two day event, but the main event for you and me is on Sunday. On Saturday there are Ukulele workshops and a (non-free) Open Mic event in the Haddington Hotel (formerly Kingston Hotel).

And then the big and free event on Sunday is the Ukulele Hooley Concert in the People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. From mid-day until evening there will be Irish and International Ukulele bands and soloists playing non-stop. At the same time the Dun Laoghaire Food Market is happening in People’s Park so that you can keep yourself fed.

It is a really great festival, full of positivity and good spirits. And I can tell you that these spirits have been tested in the last few years when the weather gods had an exceptionally bad weather programme sent to Dun Laoghaire! I was there and despite torrential rain, the Ukulele players kept going and going with good humour and a big smile on their face.

I will be in Dun Laoghaire again this year and definitely recommend the Ukulele Hooley!

As part of the 1916-2016 Centenary Commemorations, a free tour will take at Arbour Hill Cemetery every Sunday at 14:00. (from March until end of October).

No booking necessary. The meeting point is at the 1916 Memorial Wall towards the back of the cemetery.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Every Sunday a free tour takes place in the Hugh Lane Gallery.

“Movies in the Park” in Marlay Park is a 2-day programme of movie screenings on Sat+Sun at 14:00/16:30/19:00 on each day.

The moveis will be shown on a big 60 square metre LED screen (that’s the size of some 2-bedroom flats in Dublin!).

The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race takes place this Sunday. The men’s race starts at 14:30 and the women’s race at 15:30. The course is 2200m long and starts and finishes next to the East Pier at the RNLI Lifeboat station. From there they swim to the East Pier Lighthouse at the end of the pier and back again.

The swimmers will at all times be relatively close to the East Pier and will hear you cheering them on! And the cheering on part is the part that is free. ;-)

Join Dr. Audrey Whitty in a special talk for Heritage Week exploring works in the Museum’s contemporary Applied Art & Design collection by Irish artists living abroad and artists who have decided to make Ireland their home.

Phil Lynott from the great band Thin Lizzy was born on 20 August 1949 (and died on 04 January 1986) and The Bloody Stream in Howth is inviting everyone to a Phil Lynott Birthday Bash on Sunday.

The National Heritage Week is around the corner! It is a week long festival (20-28 August) that will build awareness and education about our heritage, its conservation and preservation. There will be more than 2000 events all over Ireland and hundreds of them are in Dublin.

This is a live event in Tralee and a TV show in your home, so how come it is mentioned in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)?

Well, the main reason it is mentioned here is for the many many non-Irish Dublin Event Guide readers. The Rose of Tralee is an odd piece of Irish culture and you have to watch it (some of it!) at least once. Young women from Irish communities from all over the world try to become the new “Rose of Tralee”, but it is neither a beauty competition nor a talent competition and nobody really knows what the participants are judged on.

Over two long nights 65 (!!!) competitors are interviewed, will praise their granny and thank their parents and then we have to endure a performance of some sort of skills (from singing to sandwich making!). Luckily “reciting a poem” is outlawed this year.

If you grew up in Ireland you either love it or hate it, but you definitely have some strong childhood memories of the “Rose of Tralee”, but if you are not from Ireland you will most likely find it amazingly anachronistic or just boring. 57 years is this event running and shockingly you are part financing it through your TV license fee.

This is a tour of the Yeats exhibition “Yeats: the Life and Works of William Butler Yeats”, looking in particular at his great contribution to the Irish Cultural Revival. Highlights will include his involvement in the foundation of the Abbey Theatre and partnership with Lady Gregory, the influence of Douglas Hyde and the Literary Revival, and his promotion of Irish history, culture, art and folktales throughout his life.

“From Meath of the pastures: The Story of Smithfield, Dublin, and a family who lived there” is an illustrated presentation by Mary O’Connell on the founding of the cattle market in Smithfield. She relates the story of a family of drovers who settled there in 1823 and whose descendants stayed for over 100 years. Mary is a member of that family and of the Old Dublin Society.

Aquileia, in the North of Italy in the region Friuli, was founded by the Romans in the year 181 B.C. Due to its strategic position and its port, Aquileia soon became an important centre of cultural and commercial exchange between North Europe and the Mediterranean Sea and grew to become the ninth city in size and importance of the Roman Empire.

This exhibition “Aquileia – Crossroad of the Roman Empire” was created in 2009 and since then has travelled around Europe explaining the history and the role of Aquileia in the Roman Empire. It will be launched in Dublin on Tuesday and will then be open until 23 September (Opening Times: Mon-Fri: 10:00-13:30 + 15:00-17:00).

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in Whelan’s.

Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. This is a live event in Tralee and a TV show in your home, so how come it is mentioned in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)?

Well, the main reason it is mentioned here is for the many many non-Irish Dublin Event Guide readers. The Rose of Tralee is an odd piece of Irish culture and you have to watch it (some of it!) at least once. Young women from Irish communities from all over the world try to become the new “Rose of Tralee”, but it is neither a beauty competition nor a talent competition and nobody really knows what the participants are judged on.

Over two long nights 65 (!!!) competitors are interviewed, will praise their granny and thank their parents and then we have to endure a performance of some sort of skills (from singing to sandwich making!). Luckily “reciting a poem” is outlawed this year.

If you grew up in Ireland you either love it or hate it, but you definitely have some strong childhood memories of the “Rose of Tralee”, but if you are not from Ireland you will most likely find it amazingly anachronistic or just boring. 57 years is this event running and shockingly you are part financing it through your TV license fee.

So, enjoy the show! ;-)

“Blackpitts – the Industrial Past of Newmarket and the Tenters” is a talk by a seemigly unnamed person.

“Located beside the Poddle, the areas around Blackpitts, Newmarket, Cork Street, Donore and the Tenters were once some of Dublin’s most industrialised areas. In Blackpitts, the tanning pits industry thrived from medieval times, contributing to the area’s name. Later, the Huguenot weavers settled in this area, with a ‘New Market’ for the trading of wool and cloth set out by Earl of Meath in the 1620s. This fascinating story is brought together in this talk, giving an overview of the industrial past of the area around Blackpitts and Tenters – and the communities that lived here.”

The Queen’s Theatre in Pearse Street was originally built in 1829 as the Adelphi Theatre. From its earliest days the theatre celebrated Ireland’s heroes and historical characters. Figures such as St Patrick, Wolfe Tone and Robert Emmet were some of the subjects portrayed in plays. Cecil Allen will talk about the theatre’s history.

“The Archaeology of a Decade of War: Mapping Shipwrecks and Protecting the Shipwrecks of WWI in Irish Waters” is a talk by Karl Brady (Underwater Archaeological Unit, National Monuments Service) and Charise McKeon (Geological Survey of Ireland).

They will provide an overview of the World War One naval conflict in Irish water and will illustrate the range and quantity of the resulting wrecks and discuss the strategies that the UAU and GSI are employing to document, map and protect these sites in Irish waters.

Historian Maeve Casserly will explore how different moments in Ireland’s past have been remembered or forgotten. Key episodes in Irish history such as the 1641 Depositions, the 1798 Rebellion and the Famine will be explored using the rich collections of the National Library. The lecture will focus on popular memory in particular looking at ballads, folktales and even historical fiction today.

Transport Initiative Ireland is organising a public seminar entitled Road, Rail and Rebellion which will present a number of papers including an account of a 19th-century cholera burial ground rediscovered during the Luas Cross City project; a paper describing the insurgents use of the tram system during the 1916 Rising; while another paper will relate how the Luas Cross City project has shone a light on the fighting in Dublin, particularly the impact on the statuary of the city centre. Finally, there will be a paper on the a war of independence ambush site, from the N22 Macroom Bypass.

Let’s Make a Scene is similar to an “Open Mic” event for musicians and spoken word artists, just for actors, comedians and imrovisers.

Tessa Finn reads from letters her grandparents wrote to each other during 1916, against a backdrop of unfolding events around The Easter Rising. The letters provide a private glimpse into the lives of two people growing in love, not involved in the conflict but touched by it in many ways.

Darinka is an Italian writer, photographer and blogger who, after living abroad for 15 years, in 2014 decided to go back to Italy and devote herself to her passions: travelling, writing, dreaming and photography.

She walked 3,000 km from the very bottom of Italy to the top, with a diary, a camera, no money and a box in which she collected people’s dreams.

The name of the project was walkaboutitalia, it became a blog and then a book. To promote the book Darinka travelled all around Italy again, but this time with an electric bamboo bicycle, covering more than 6,000 km.

She wil be in Dublin to talk about her two books and about her new project: She will sail he oceans and travel the world on a bike.

The National Heritage Week is around the corner! It is a week long festival (20-28 August) that will build awareness and education about our heritage, its conservation and preservation. There will be more than 2000 events all over Ireland and hundreds of them are in Dublin.

From guided tours via concerts and talks to Family events, it will be a very busy week for anybody who is interested in Heritage or at least has an open mind. The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

Summer Music at Sandford is a series of lunchtime concerts at Sandford Parish Church. Every Friday in July and August these classical concerts will take place.
