Hi all!

Here it is! I know, it is not good when you get the weekly newsletter only during Saturday and someone had the interesting idea to maybe re-structure the Dublin Event Event Guide so that events are covered from Monday until Sunday instead of Saturday until Friday. Interesting idea and worth considering! There are some upsides and some downsides to that idea and I will look at both!

[ad]

Do you maybe also have an idea what could be done to improve on the delivery time? I was thinking about “outsourcing” some of the work, but that would cost money and considering that I can’t even get the relatively small amount together that I need to cover the current cost, any additional cost would Just make that problem bigger. (There was not one single donation last week as I explain a little further down.)

Sure, the other option would be to close down the Dublin Event Guide, if I can’t send it at the right time anymore despite all efforts, but for me that is the LAST option UNLESS you don’t want/use the Dublin Event Guide anymore.

Let me know your opinion at dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject FUTURE. Thanks!

This Dublin Event Guide will be published again in two stages today. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app, but more events will have to be added after that. The smartphone app will be updated continually during that and when all is completed, then the mail will be sent to you.

This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.

Bad news from the financial department!! There was NO donation last week and with the outstanding EUR 30 from last month and the new bill of EUR 190, this means, this month I need to find EUR 220. If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from motivational speaker, self-help author and personal finance instructor Tony Robbins. He said:

“One reason so few of us achieve what we truly want is that we never direct our focus; we never concentrate our power. Most people dabble their way through life, never deciding to master anything in particular.” – Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins runs a huge event once a year, called Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London, that is attended by more than 6000 people every time. It is a four day event and it will – without a doubt – have a long lasting impact on every participant.

At the Unleash the Power Within Workshop in Dublin, you will learn
+ How to break through the fears that hold you back
+ How to create momentum in your life to make difficult things become effortless
+ How to install the habits that create maximum energy, optimum health and peak vitality
+ How to implement a fail-safe system to ensure you follow through your long-term goals
+ How to harness the key strategies of wealth creation, regardless of economic conditions

One of Tony’s trainers will be in Dublin to tell you more about UPW and to teach you some great concepts to improve your life. This 3-hour UPW Preview is a workshop event and it will take place on Saturday 09 July either from 10:00-13:00 or from 15:00-18:00 in the Carlton Hotel in Blanchardstown. Admission is free, but you have to register here to attend.

At the Pendulum event in Dublin in January thousands of people paid more than EUR 700 for a one day event to see Tony Robbins. Learn his key concepts at this workshop event for free!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week NOBODY helped with a donation. :-( Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the Baltic Day takes place in Farmleigh House and the National Play Day in Merrion Square. The Battle of the Somme Re-enactment sounds interesting and the Flaneur by Dublin art installation at Smithfield looks like it is worth a visit. All these things take place on Sunday.

On Saturday the IFI Open Day might interest you and during the week, there is the Green Drinks Dublin meetup on Tuesday and the Free Wednesday with free admission to some heritage sites also is this week again…surprisingly on a Wednesday. ;-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin has a new Mayor

This would be important news if the Mayor of Dublin had the slightest bit of power or if he/she could achieve anything. Thanks to the councillors in Fingal County Council, the direct election of a Mayor for Dublin was stopped in recent years and therefore we are stuck with a purely representative and totally power less figure whose main job in the year seems to be to switch on the Christmas Tree lights in O’Connell Street.

Not even the not-directly elected Mayor in Dublin is democratically elected, but instead he/she is selected by the party whose turn it is (based on a pact between a number of parties in the City Council) and he/she is then guaranteed to get the job for one year.

The new mayor of Dublin is Labour Councillor Brendan Carr, who was elected on 27 June. He succeeds the Sinn Fein councillor Críona Ní Dhálaigh who was mayor from July 2015. Did you remember her name? Or maybe you had never heard her name before?

By the way, I am aware that the official title is “LORD Mayor of Dublin”, but since Ireland is not British anymore, it doesn’t really make sense to carry that outdated “Lord” prefix anymore.

Sweeney’s Bar has been saved!

Sweeney’s Bar (or Sweeney’s Mongrel as it was originally called) was meant to close at the end of June, but it seems that the venue was saved in the last minute and will now continue in the current form. Details are not known yet and there are indications that there will be a bit of a migration time until all will be sorted, but it seems that the troubles are averted and the pub will be with us – and hopefully have lots of free live music – for another while.

Charles IV Exhibition in Dublin Castle

Opening hours are Mondays to Saturdays from 09:45 to 16:45 and Sundays from 11:00 to 16:30. Admission to the Charles IV exhibition is free by request at the admissions desk.

Summer of Heritage 2016 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown

The Summer of Heritage 2016 programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, is a series of free guided tours running for 10 weeks from 27 June – 04 September. There will be 29 events at locations like Dalkey Castle, Cabinteely House, National Maritime Museum, Monkstown Castle, Deansgrange Cemetery, Blackrock, Milltown, The Metals, Seapoint Martello Tower, Dun Laoghaire, Killiney Hill and there will also be a Maeve Binchy walking tour, a 1916 Graves tour of Deansgrange Cemetery, a 1916 Social History tour of Dún Laoghaire and a 1916 Exhibition in Marlay House.

No other part of Dublin runs such an interesting and extensive heritage programme with plenty of free guided tours, so have a look at the programme on the website here. You find a link on the same site where you can download the full booklet in PDF.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE HELPS EVENT ORGANISERS ==

HOW TO RECRUIT AND MANAGE EVENT VOLUNTEERS AT SCALRE
Mass participation charity events or festivals require many hands on deck – and if all those hands have to be paid, the budget will quickly be blown.
But just because your event requires a lot of on-site support, doesn’t mean it’s a no-go. Event volunteers can fill all sorts of roles from stewarding and litter picking, to registration and admin. Many events simply wouldn’t be possible without the help of volunteers. Read the full article here.

If you are regularly or occasionaly organising events, keep an eye on the Eventbrite blog. It covers a wide variety of event-related and event-relevant topics that can help you hugely! Read more here.

And if you are looking for free or non-free events, you can find them at www.eventbrite.ie

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Leonardo da Vinci – Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection

06 May – 17 July

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The National Gallery will exhibit ten of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). They are on loan from the Royal Collection and will be on show for 2.5 months.

Admission to the exhibition is free, but pre-booking is required. A timed ticketing system will be in operation.

You will get to the booking sites via www.nationalgallery.ie/Exhibitions/Leonardo.aspx

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation

30 June – 30 Sept

National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8

Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.

Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Find out more details here.

Flaneur by Dublin – Photo Art Installation

02-24 July – 17:00-21:00

Smithfield Plaza, Smithfield, Dublin 7

Fla?neur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.

The two selected artists for Fla?neur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK). They were for a residency in Ireland earlier this year, engaging with the urban and rural landscape and producing the present body of work.

Fla?neur By Dublin is part of a larger project called Flâneur – New Urban Narratives. This is a new, European Union funded, 2 year long project, transforming photographers into fla?neurs and requesting them to apply a new approach to their work within the urban territory. The project involves an international network of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries, and it will be presented in the 13 partner cities.

The launch will take place on Sat 02 July at 19:00.

The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 02 Jul

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

Free Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Heritage Sites

09:00, Wed 06 Jul

Various heritage locations in Dublin

Entry charges at some OPW Heritage sites are waived once a month, on the “Free Wednesday”, the first Wednesday of the month. The Office of Public Works (OPW), who looks after the state owned heritage sites, wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therefore started this great initiative in 2011.

Most OPW managed sites can already be visited for free (e.g. Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park, National Botanic Gardens, Pearse Museum, etc), but some sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

In the past Kilmainham Gaol (the most popular site) and Rathfarnham Castle were also on that list, but they have both been removed. Which is a big loss.

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therefore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

City Spectacular 2016

12:00 – 19:00, Fri 08 Jul

Merrion Square, Dublin 2

The best event in Dublin of the year is happening again over the coming weekend. The City Spectacular, sponsored by Laya Healthcare (formerly the “Street Performance World Championship”) is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are some changes (less stages, fewer performers, added other events), but it is still an amazing and outstanding event and I strongly recommend it to anyone.

If you can’t make it on Saturday or Sunday, you will have a chance to see some performances already on Friday. On two stages in Merrion Square a total of 13 performances will be shown. The same performers will be on stage on Saturday and then on Sunday again, so you could say that the Friday event is a warm up or a preview.

Other components of the City Spectacular are a a music stage, Creative Hub (sponsored by ESB), food stalls, Live Science Shows, an Imaginosity playground, writing workshops for children, Silent Disco, Artzone, Dance & Drama Workshops. etc

The festival is free, but be aware that the street performers make their money from your donations, so bring some money with you and be generous if the show was great.

The timetables are downloadable here, and the performers are introduced on www.cityspectacular.com/street-performers

Some seasoned Street Performance World Championship/City Spectacular goers will miss the big names that were at the festival over the years and indeed, the de-focus from the championship to just an entertainment event in one of many cities in the world, had an influence in that direction. But remember that you probably didn’t know a Space Cowboy or a Mario the Queen of the Circus either before you saw them in Merrion Square. So, come to the City Spectacular with the same enthusiasm, curiosity and playfulness as in all previous years and you will entirely enjoy it again! ;-)

This is odd

Serious disease targets men in Ireland! – No cure found for Umbrellaphobia yet.

New empirical studies have shown that men in Ireland suffer from a debilitating disease that not only affects men, but also attacks their wardrobe. The disease only breaks out on rainy days, but then spreads faster than the feared winter vomiting bug until it reaches every corner of Dublin. The disease is called Umbrellaphobia and is a chronic aversion against the use of umbrellas and it can even escalate to an outright fear of umbrellas. Luckily the Umbrellaphobia disappears once the rain stop, but subsequent wet days show that it never gets cured, it only gets temporarily pushed back a bit.

This Umbrellaphobia seems to affect the brain of the majority of men in Ireland and makes logical thinking and the slightest bit of risk assessment an impossible thing. The prevalence of the disease is significantly higher in Irish males in comparison to non-irish males, but it does affect both population groups.

What happened? Last Wednesday, a wet early morning, I saw with my own eyes how Irish men in particular and many men in general have such a fear of umbrellas – or the image that the use of an umbrella might create (or destroy), – that destroying their clothes, walking around looking like a wet cat and getting drowned in the Dublin rain is preferred over using a stretched out piece of fabric, spanned over a collapsible metal frame.

I saw not one, not two, not three, no FOUR men who had full suits on, but walked along the canal with no jacket and no umbrella, looking like someone had dragged them through the canal. What is wrong with (Irish) men!? Why does a simple umbrella scare the bejaysus out of them so that they would be rather seen dead (or drowned) than with an umbrella in their hand.

Odd!! Luckily the women are significantly more logical and analytical when it comes to the rain and its effects.

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
