A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The yearly NCAD CEAD Art Exhibition 2016 will run from 07-14 July.

The National College of Art & Design (NCAD) CEAD Art Exhibition showcases a diverse range of contemporary art and design by NCAD part-time students. It is a great opportunity to see and buy original work at very affordable prices.

It is also a great way to discover the wide variety of part-time and evening classes that the college offers, which are open to anyone to apply for and attend.

The exhibition contains painting, sculpture, jewellery, fine prints, photography, ceramics, textiles, stained glass, multimedia and much more, including work by amateur, professional and award winning artists. Admission is free.

An Intercultural Tour in Mandarin Language with Community Ambassador Vicky Wang is taking place.

A Somme Centenary Commemoration will take place in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens on Saturday at 12:00. The Ceremony to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, in which approximately 3,500 soldiers from the island of Ireland lost their lives, is being held in conjunction with the Royal British Legion.

The ceremony will be attended by the President, the Taoiseach, the Lord Mayor, the Government and the Council of State, as well as members of Oireachtas, representatives from Northern Ireland, the Diplomatic Corps, the Judiciary and a number of veteran organisations.

The Ceremony will involve a wreath-laying by the President of Ireland. Ambassadors of the eight countries that fought at the Somme, Representatives from Northern Ireland and the Presidents of the Royal British Legion (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) will also lay wreaths.

Music will be provided by the Army Band 1 Brigade. Mount Sackville and Scoil Mhuire Choir will also perform at the Ceremony.
Sign language interpretation will be provided at the event.

You are invited to come to the ceremony as well, BUT you will have to be “in position” before 11:15. Whenever the President goes to an event, us plebs have to be waiting for him for at least 30-45 minutes.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The best event in Dublin of the year is happening again over this coming weekend. The City Spectacular, sponsored by Laya Healthcare (formerly the “Street Performance World Championship”) is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are some changes (less stages, fewer performers, added other events), but it is still an amazing and outstanding event and I strongly recommend it to anyone.

There will be about 40 street performance shows and other components of the City Spectacular are a a music stage, Creative Hub (sponsored by ESB), food stalls, Live Science Shows, an Imaginosity playground, writing workshops for children, Silent Disco, Artzone, Dance & Drama Workshops. etc

The festival is free, but be aware that the street performers make their money from your donations, so bring some money with you and be generous if the show was great.

Some seasoned Street Performance World Championship/City Spectacular goers will miss the big names that were at the festival over the years and indeed, the de-focus from the championship to just an entertainment event in one of many cities in the world, had an influence in that direction. But remember that you probably didn’t know a Space Cowboy or a Mario the Queen of the Circus either before you saw them in Merrion Square. So, come to the City Spectacular with the same enthusiasm, curiosity and playfulness as in all previous years and you will entirely enjoy it again! ;-)

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

Qigong is a traditional Chinese form of meditation coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm state of mind.

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). This monthly tour will explore the Library’s rich architectural history and heritage. The tour begins in the main hall of the Library and will include an introduction to the Signatories exhibition, a selected display of key items relating to the seven signatories of the 1916 Proclamation. The tour also includes a visit to the Library’s iconic reading room.

Dovie Thomason, an Apache/Lakota storyteller, will talk to Irish poet Theo Dorgan at this public interview. It is an event of Storytellers of Ireland.

This is a two-day presentation of the ground-breaking music of Jennifer Walshe by the radical text and music partnership “Béal” at the Project Arts Centre.

The works will be performed by choral singers ensembÉal and Jennifer Walsh.

Every Saturday a kid’s book will be read in 27 Eason’s stores all over Ireland. In O’Connell Street the reading takes place at 14:00. In the other Eason Stores, the times vary between 11:00 and 15:00 (see website below). Suitable for age 0-6 with their parents.

An Intercultural Tour in Irish Language with Community Ambassador Jack FitzGerald will take place.

“The Battle of Somme” was released in September 1916 and was seen by more than 20 million people in Britain and Ireland. It was hoped that the film would rally civilian support for the war and highlight a great victory. View this restored film with a short introduction from historian Dr. Jennifer Wellington. Running time 77 minutes.

Admission is free and no booking required, places are allocated on first-come first served basis 15 minutes before start.

The “Two Birds / One Stone” is a group show of mainly sculptural work (10 June – 07 Aug) and an artists talk with Helen O’Leary will take place on Saturday.

This is a free talk at the National Gallery.

Do you remember “Shakespeare in the Park”? The great team at Fortune’s Fool Production originally started in Ranelagh Gardens, then they moved to Iveagh Gardens and this year all their work has been recognised and they are going on a nationwide tour to Irish Monument, but luckily they still spend a good bit of time with us.

The play is “Measure for Measure”, a lesser known play by Shakespeare. Details about the play are here.

Beyonce is in town! She will perform a gig in Croke Park on Saturday and with all the thousands of Beyonce fans in town, there are Beyonce After Parties on left, right and centre.

The Morgan Bar doesn’t wait with their After Party until the concert is over, but they party the whole evening and night.

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. There will be Food Stalls, Flea Market, Vintage Clothing, Arts&Crafts and a Pop-Up Record Store.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

This month the Fusion Sundays Market will also feature a Bellydance Performance, pop-up yoga for adults and kids and a live Swing Jazz Band. [Shivam Yoga Workshop (12:30, EUR 5), Smoking’ Hot Club Swing Jazz Band (14:30, Free), Laughter Yoga (14:30, EUR 5), Bollywood Workshop (15:30, Free)]

The Irish Defence Forces open day will include a full weapons and equipment display, with all corps of the Defence Forces participating and showing the best of their equipment.

There will be a careers exhibition where you can learn about life in the Defence Forces, the Defence Forces parachute team will showcase their skills when they will jump from the Air Corps helicopters flying overhead, unarmed combat demonstrations will take place, vintage vehicles will be there and a lot more.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Army Brass and Pipe Band.

The hugely popular Teddy Bears Picnic in Blackrock Park will happen again this Sunday.

It is a festival of all things Teddy with lots of fun, games and surprises all over the park. Everybody, young and old, is invited to bring their teddy bears and blankets.

The Teddy Bears Hospital will be in Blackrock to provide free bear care and checkups with minor repairs to give ailing Teddy Bears a new lease of life. There will be a DJ, face painting, bouncy castles and inflatable games for all ages, entertainment on the Lake Stage and picnic facilities.

As part of the 1916-2016 Centenary Commemorations, a free tour will take at Arbour Hill Cemetery every Sunday at 14:00. (from March until end of October).

No booking necessary. The meeting point is at the 1916 Memorial Wall towards the back of the cemetery.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Join Dermot Bolger, Writer in Residence in a writing workshop with a talk on the process of writing followed by an extensive question-and-answer session with the audience. This session will cover every aspect of writing and also the business of writing, across all the mediums which Bolger is involved in.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The next Board Game Night, organised by Alt Events, will take place on Sunday. You can bring your own game or you can play some of the many games that Alt Events will bring along.

The Terns (birds!) have returned to the Dalkey islands for another season and the new Tern Warden will be running a ‘Dalkey Tern Watch’ to watch the terns and all the wildlife we can see from the pier. The thinking is that maybe the city changes so much at night that someone with specific responsibility for everything that is happening in the night should be available.

To me this is a totally ridiculous idea! Not because it wouldn’t be helpful to put more focus on what is happening during the night, but because we can’t even have a Day Mayor that is allowed to take any responsibilities based on his/her brief. All we have a City Manager who seems to do whatever he wants. So before we talk about a Night Mayor, we should talk about a democratisation of the running of the city by giving only people the power that can be re-elected or kicked out of their job.

The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (15:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday until September.

The galleries and studios are ArtBox, The LAB Gallery (Dublin City Council’s Arts office), Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Oonagh Young Gallery and Talbot Gallery & Studios. They are in the area of Talbot Street, Foley Street and James Joyce Street in Dublin 1.

The Wood Quay Summer Sessions are back, a series of four lunchtime gigs/concerts in the Amphitheatre at Wood Quay. This year, the four weeks will bring four different musical styles.

The second session on Thursday will feature Sean Mac Erlain and Alex Petcu-Colan. Sean Mac Erlaine is a saxophonist and clarinetist form Dublin (www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0_g7uJ31zA) and Aley Petcu is a percusionist from Cork, who will play Selections from Tom Lane’s “Beats, Bells and Bridges (www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAj_NHq4Sh4)

Both will play their unique type of contemporary music. The performance will NOT be a Jazz concert though! Jazz was last week, this week is “Contemporary”, which CAN be even more challenging for some than Jazz, ;-) Check out the You Tube clips above to get an idea what will expect you.

E.gress, a soulful film about the twilight world of dementia, explores how individuals diagnosed with dementia find new ways to adjust to a changing world.

The E.gress National Tour by artist Marie Brett has visited seven venues across Ireland since 2015 and closes at the Irish Museum of Modern Art on 14 July 2016 with a screening, interactive exhibition, performances and a discussion event.

There will be a drop-in film screening and interactive installation of tour responses from 17:00-18:30, followed by performances and a conversation event from 18:30-19:30. Sarah Bowman, Director of Public Engagement at Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing, St. James’s Hospital, will chair the conversation event and guest speaker is Grainne Humphreys, Festival Director of Audi Dublin International Film Festival.

The National Library wills creen the film “The Battle of the Somme” from 11-22 July in the library’s seminar room. The film was seen by over 20 million people in 1916.

From Mon-Fri the screenings will take place three times a day at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 with the exception from Wednesday 13 July when the 11:00 screening will not happen. Running time of the film is 77min.

This film by Liam Gillick is a personal examination of the work of Richard Hamilton.

Particular focus is placed upon an Exhibit, a work that has had a strong influence on the development of Liam Gillick’s method and practice. Animation, computer modelling, live action footage and first person narrative are combined to show Hamilton’s work from multiple perspectives.
