Hi all!
The City Spectacular was spectacular again and I did manage to see a large amount of performances despite my late arrival on Saturday. It was helped by the unexpectedly good weather on Sunday. Such a great weekend. :-) But this week I was very busy with my day job and consequently I am so much behind again.
[ad]
So the Dublin Event Guide will have to be published again in two stages. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app, but more events will have to be added after that. The smartphone app will be updated continually during that and when all is completed, then the mail will be sent to you.
This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.
More good news regarding the bills! It is only the 16 July and the outstanding amount is down to EUR 15. Thanks so much! If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is another quote from motivational speaker, self-help author and personal finance instructor Tony Robbins. He said:
“If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” – Tony Robbins
Tony Robbins runs a huge event once a year, called Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London, that is attended by more than 6000 people every time. It is a four day event and it will – without a doubt – have a long lasting impact on every participant.
At the Unleash the Power Within Workshop in Dublin, you will learn
+ How to break through the fears that hold you back
+ How to create momentum in your life to make difficult things become effortless
+ How to install the habits that create maximum energy, optimum health and peak vitality
+ How to implement a fail-safe system to ensure you follow through your long-term goals
+ How to harness the key strategies of wealth creation, regardless of economic conditions
For the last time, one of Tony’s trainers will be in Dublin to tell you more about UPW and to teach you some great concepts to improve your life. This 3-hour UPW Preview is a workshop event and it will take place on Saturday 30 July and you can choose the time slot from 10:00-13:00 or from 15:00-18:00 in the Clarion Hotel near Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. Admission is free, but you have to register here to attend.
At the Pendulum event in Dublin in January thousands of people paid more than EUR 700 for a one day event to see Tony Robbins. Learn his key concepts at this workshop event for free!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week JB M, Maria F, Endija S and Catriona D were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend, the Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is the event for people that look for a family-friendly event. (Sat+Sun) If you have a baby/toddler, maybe the Family Market will interest you and if you don’t then have a look at the Canal Bank Market (both on Sunday).
On Monday the Liberties Festival with plenty of events will start and the Festival of Curiosity with really interesting talks on Friday and more events from Thursday will also commence.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

College Green Pedestrianisation not happening?
The Dublin Gazette printed an article on 30 June about the College Green pedestrian plan being in trouble. Oddly no other newspaper wrote about it as far as I can see, but it seems that the City Councillors once again didn’t think a plan through properly and now have to back peddle. The article can be found here. (Thanks to Michelle MacNamara for helping me to find this article again!)
A ignorant decision regarding the College Green pedestrianisation? That would be a first right? Well, only if there hadn’t been nonsensical decisions about restrictions for busking in Dublin City and the totally idiotic plan to introduce a 30 km/h speed limit in ALL of Dublin. Can we please have a new City Council? :-O
By the way, most people would think that a 30 km/h speed limit in SOME areas makes a lot of sense, but definitely not in the whole area from Phibsborough to Rathmines!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Flaneur by Dublin – Photo Art Installation
02-24 July – 17:00-21:00
Smithfield Plaza, Smithfield, Dublin 7
Flaneur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.
The two selected artists for Fla?neur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK). They were for a residency in Ireland earlier this year, engaging with the urban and rural landscape and producing the present body of work.
Flaneur By Dublin is part of a larger project called Flâneur – New Urban Narratives. This is a new, European Union funded, 2 year long project, transforming photographers into fla?neurs and requesting them to apply a new approach to their work within the urban territory. The project involves an international network of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries, and it will be presented in the 13 partner cities.
The launch will take place on Sat 02 July at 19:00.
The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

Rose Festival 2016
10:00 – 17:30, Sat 16 Jul
St. Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
The yearly Rose Festival in St. Anne’s Park is a great event for the whole family.
This is a family festival with a mix of music, market stalls, food vendors, living history displays, falconry, biodiversity events (with Beekepers, Birdwatch Ireland, Irish Wildlife Trust and a lot of other contributors), the Wooly Wards Petting Zoo and more. There are lots of child friendly attractions on site including a really great playground, but the grown ups also have enough entertainment. ;-)
In recent years, the roses weren’t in best state for the festival (due to the weather before the weekend), so if that is your main reason to go, maybe don’t expect too much, but there is more to do and admire in St Anne’s Park.
Admission to the festival is free. Many might also remember that parking was free, that has changed this year: A EUR 3 charge for parking your car on site for the day will be raised.
The Music and Dance programme on Satuday and Sunday is
11:00-12:00 Ballet Fusion
12:00-13:00 Traditional Music
14:00-16:00 Mongoose Band
16:00-18:00 Prairie Dawgs
Please note that the “official” times above don’t fully work for two reasons: There is an unexpected gap between 13:00 and 14:00 and also elsewhere the end time for the festival is listed as 17:30, not 18:00. So I expect that the start time for the Mongoose Band and the Prairie Dawgs is at least 30 minutes earlier.
I like the Rose Festival and have been there in most years. It has a very relaxed vibe with plenty of activities and I also like the Mongoose Band and the folk & bluegrass band Prairie Dawgs, so I will be there again! ;-)

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 16 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.
It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Flaneur by Dublin – PhotoIreland Festival 2016
19:00 – 21:00, Sat 16 Jul
Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
Flaneur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.
The two selected artists for Flaneur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK).
The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 17 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Flaneur by Dublin – PhotoIreland Festival 2016
19:00 – 21:00, Sun 17 Jul
Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
Flaneur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.
The two selected artists for Flaneur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK).
The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

Festival of Curiosity
10:00, Thu 21 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The hugely popular Festival of Curiosity will be back from 21-24 July. It is a (family) festival that celebrates science, arts, design and technology and I already included for the last two weeks it in the “Upcoming Events” section of the Dublin Event Guide, because tickets for free events go like hot cakes!
The festival starts on Thursday and a lot of free events that needed tickets are booked out, but there are still some tickets available and there are also drop-in events. Also: Many non-free events are very low priced (EUR 2 or EUR 4), so you should definitely check out the full programme to see if you find anything that appeals to you.
I will list in this Dublin Event Guide some of the free events that are not booked out yet (at the time of writing this!), but as I said, check the full programme!!! ;-)
Some of the free continual events on every day during thefestival are:
+ Continuous Drift – Sound installation in Meeting House Square in Temple Bar
+ Urban Escape – Pop-up experience across four rooms with different experiences exploring how the brain, the body and the mind reacts to a series of immersive rooms, environments, activities, colours and sounds. (12:00-18:00 in Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, Age: 12+)
+ Earthlings in Outer Space – A short history of non-human astronauts (An online streamed audio documentary that will be available for the four days of the festival via the link here.)
+ Memory of Place – An interactive story map of Dublin via a downloadable app.

Direct Provision System: Why it must end? – Discussion
19:00, Thu 21 Jul
Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1
United Against Racism is building a campaign to abolish the Direct Provision System (DPS). Introduced more than 15 years ago as a 6-month temporary solution to address the accommodation needs of asylum seekers, the DPS has become a permanent inhumane entrapment for many.
There are currently around 5,000 people in DPS centres with 15% there more than 8 years. The average time asylum seekers spend in DPS is 38 months. Asylum seekers in the DPS are not allowed to work and don’t have access to 3rd Level education. A weekly allowance of EUR 19.10 per adult and EUR 16.60 per child is payable to asylum seekers living in direct provision. The DPS is an oppressive discriminatory system and the asylum seekers, adult and children, isolated in DPS centres face serious physical and mental difficulties.
The speakers at the events will be:
+ Gary McFarlane (Stand Up to Racism – UK)
+ Ellie Kisyombe (Anti-Racism, Asylum Seeker Activist)
+ Memet Uludag (United Against Racism)
+ TBA
Admission is free.

International Bar Jazz Night
21:30, Thu 21 Jul
The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Festival of Curiosity
10:00, Fri 22 Jul

The Art of Dying- Festival of Curiosity Talk
10:00 – 11:00, Fri 22 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
“The Art of Dying” with Ivor Williams is part of the Festival of Curiosity talk series on Friday.
Most of us don’t have a very good relationship with death. At least not in the West, where one in three Americans say they would ask doctors to do anything possible to keep them alive and only one in three UK adults have prepared a will.
How can design help us cope with the realities of death and dying? Ivor Williams works at the Helix Centre, a unique design studio embedded in a London hospital, where he asks and attempts to answer this question everyday.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Machines, Humanity & the Future of Communication – Talk
11:30 – 12:30, Fri 22 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The talk “Machines, Humanity & the Future of Communication – The future of art, design, and how we teach our computers to listen” is part of the Festival of Curiosity programme.
A future is coming where we will no longer program computers, but we will teach them about the world. A large part of this training will fall under the remit of surveillance, recognizing images or videos for security purposes. But what if instead we taught computers how to become more human?
Join Alex Rothera & Chris G.Thompson to explore the future of art, design, and how we teach our computers to listen as they
introduce the basics & history of machine learning, demonstrate how a computer can recognize faces, yawns or body movements and experiment how a computer can make music based on how our faces move and gesture.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the websiste below.

Dublin Castle as a Red Cross Military Hospital, 1915-1919 – Talk
13:00, Fri 22 Jul

The talk “‘Scenes of gaiety now filled with beds’: Dublin Castle as a Red Cross Military Hospital, 1915-1919” will take place on Friday. Admission is free, but booking is required via DublinCastleEducation@opw.ie
At the instigation of Lady Aberdeen, wife of the viceroy and president of the first Dublin branch of the Red Cross, Dublin Castle became and auxiliary hospital in January 1915. ‘For the first time in its life’, she later wrote, ‘it seemed the Castle was going to be popular.’ It is widely known that James Connolly, a wounded prisoner, was court martialled here after the Easter Rising. But by 1919 when it closed, 6,000 men had been treated in it.

Unleash The Power Within Workshop – Tony Robbins Training

Clarion Hotel, (near Liffey Valley Shopping Centre), Clondalkin, Dublin 22
Motivational speaker, self-help author and personal finance instructor Tony Robbins runs a huge event once a year, called Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London, that is attended by more than 6000 people every time. It is a four day event and it will – without a doubt – have a long lasting impact on every participant.
At a Unleash the Power Within Workshop in Dublin, you will learn
+ How to break through the fears that hold you back
+ How to create momentum in your life to make difficult things become effortless
+ How to install the habits that create maximum energy, optimum health and peak vitality
+ How to implement a fail-safe system to ensure you follow through your long-term goals
+ How to harness the key strategies of wealth creation, regardless of economic conditions
One of Tony’s trainers will be in Dublin to tell you more about UPW and to teach you some great concepts to improve your life. This 3-hour UPW Preview is another workshop event and it will take place on Saturday 30 July either from 10:00-13:00 or from 15:00-18:00 in the Clarion Hotel near the Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. Admission is free, but you have to register here to attend.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
The article sin this “This is Odd!” section are sometimes funny, sometimes controversial, but always personal opinions about things that are happening in Dublin, in Ireland or otherwise in my life. Occasionally, however, the things that stir me are a little too controversial or too far removed to be included here. And in these rare cases, I sometimes decide to post it instead on my blog and only put a link t the article here.
This week, the attack in Nice and the reactions to it were very much on my mind and I had to write about it. But it is maybe one step too far to be included here. Therefore my article
Killings in Nice and how NOT to react
