Hi all!

I made a big mistake last night! I went to an event! And now the Dublin Event Guide is late again. It seems that I have to give up going to events to be better able to send this weekly e-mail magazine. :-O That wasn’t the intention!

[ad]

Again I will send it in two stages. This is the final version of the weekly Dublin Event Guide.

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 64,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by Chris Brogan. He said

Tell more people that you love them. You never know how much they might need it.

Sometimes we say that we love someone because we want a reward. But to change your part of the world, you need to do things for altruistic, non-self-focused reasons. So tell more that you love them (but only if you mean it!)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Debbie L, Lica B-B and Aodhagan D were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there are number of monthly markets happening:

+ Canal Bank Market in Portobello on Saturday
+ A Fabulous Market in the George Pub on Saturday
+ Fusion Sundays – World Culture Market in the Food Co-op on Sunday

Then there is a Guerrilla event in Merrion Square, but the weather will probably interfere with that: “All We Need Is Love” on Saturday

and I am also interested in the “Word War One Remembered” event at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday the Transit of Mercury across the Sun will be interesting for every Astronomy enthusiast. There are two events where you can view this transit.

Competitions

Goethe Institut Choir – Carmichael Centre Charity Concert – Winner

Sat 07 May – 19:00
St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin 8

The Carmichael Centre is a support organisation for 48 different charities and voluntary groups and their main fundraiser is a yearly concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the past 21 years.

This year, the Goethe Institut Choir with Soprano Virginia Kerr will perform works from Thomas Tallin, Joseph Haydn and Georg Friedrich Händel and tickets are available from via 01-8735702 or at door at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for EUR 20.

For one Dublin Event Guide reader, the Carmichael Centre has made a pair of tickets available for a competition and the winner is Howard Linnane. Congratulations!

You can find more information here www.carmichaelcentre.ie/ and can also book via that site.

Elvis Tribute Gig with Kevin Doyle – Winner

Fri 06 May – 20:00
Sugar Club, Leeson Street, Dublin 2

Kevin Doyle sounds just like Elvis Presley! Unlike some other Elvis Tribute Artists, Kevin knows very well that he is not Elvis and he is not even trying to be, but he brings you the closest ever to hearing the “King” live. Kevin is a great singer and a really nice guy and he has a super band behind him, the “Elvis The Way It Was Orchestra”.

On Friday 06 May, they are playing a gig in the Sugar Club and it will be a great event. I have been at many of Kevin’s gigs and you can trust me on this. There might even be some unexpected surprises!! ;-)

Tickets are available via the Sugar Club website here and there will probably also be some at the door on Friday. They are EUR 13 + booking fees and the gig will start at 20:00.

Kevin and band have made a pair of tickets available for a competition and the lucky winner was John Lysaght! Congratulations!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Sweeney’s Mongrel Closing!?

What’s going on with Dublin’s former top live music venues?

After the Mercantile stopped their outstanding programme of live music with free admission – seemingly to replace it with a tourist-targeted overpriced “Irish Experience” (i.e. some food and a bit of Irish dancing for a steep EUR 35) – this week I have discovered a notice on the website of Sweeney’s Mongrel that says “Sweeney’s is closing! To celebrate the end of the world as we know we’ll be hosting some of the best acts to have graced our stages.” The event is dated for Saturday 14 May. www.sweeneysdublin.ie/gigs.php Sweeney’s in Dame Street had – in best times – daily free gigs and some epic parties across their three floors. It is only a few houses down from the Mercantile.

Two of the top free live music venues in Dublin gone within a few weeks from each other? That is very bad news!

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.

If you are interested in history/heritage, check it out! A brochure with the tours can be downloaded here.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

All We Need Is Love – Merrion Square

12:00, Sat 07 May

Merrion Square, Dublin 2

Sometimes an event is not really an event, just a random coming together of like-minded people. And it seems that “All you Need is Love” is such an event, however, with a little guidance from the people behind “All you need is love”. Maybe you could call it a Guerrilla event!? ;-)

On Saturday, they invite you to come to Merrion Square from 12:00 for Acoustic Jam Sessions (Bring your own instrument!), Slackline, Picnic (Bring your own food), Crafts (but “We’re not responsible for any kind of license (selling)..”) and Face Painting. At 16:00 there will also be a workshop called “Creating a space” by yoga teacher Justyna Golush (Bring your own Yoga mat).

So, it’s not really an event and nobody has planned anything, but Merrion Square is there for the people in Dublin, so feel free to enjoy an unorganised event together! :-)

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 May

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

British Observations in China – Lecture

18:30 – 20:00, Tue 10 May

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2

The Trinity Centre of Asian Studies is inviting to the lecture

“Extraordinary and Unaccountable Customs: British Observations on Population, Infanticide, and Footbinding in China”

by Professor John Carroll (Hong Kong University).

“From the mid-1700s through the late 1830s, Britons in China were confined to a tiny section of the city of Canton (Guangzhou). This encounter is known best for resulting in the Opium War (1839-42) and the “opening” of China. But it also generated a massive corpus of writings. Frustrated with the restrictions on trade and unable to live or travel elsewhere in China, these Britons devoted thousands of pages in journals, memoirs, and books trying to understand China, its people, and their culture. They discussed almost everything they saw, and speculated about much of what they could not see. This talk examines three interrelated aspects of this enterprise: determining the size of China’s massive population, the extent of infanticide and the origins and meanings of footbinding.”

Perceptions of 1916 Rising in the French Press – Talk

19:00, Wed 11 May

National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2

“Is it a siege, a riot, a revolt or a revolution? Perceptions of the 1916 Rising in the French Press” is a talk with Professor Grace Neville.

“This presentation will analyse representations of the 1916 Rising across the French press, from broadsheets (including Le Figaro, Le Temps and L’Humanité, read by decision-makers) to the popular press (such as Le Miroir) with its heady mix of articles, drawings and photos. The French press, in general, struggled to understand the Rising, a difficulty exacerbated by the fact that much of its reporting came at one remove, from London. A consensus emerged that the Rising was a German plot and it was deeply resented.”

But its background had remained a mystery: despite extensive research, neither the 11 men nor the photographer had been definitively identified. Irish at the Somme and Ypres: Piet Chielens in conversation with Dermot Bolger

14:00, Fri 13 May

National Museum, Collins Barracks (Decorative Arts & History), 7 Benburb Street, Dublin 7

The Battle of the Somme and the battle for control over Ypres were brutal and unrelentless fights in the First World War and many Irish soldiers who had joined the British Army died there.

Piet Chielens was born and lived near Ypres Salient and in his home village he grew up with the cemeteries and stories of that war. Since 1996 he has been co-director of the “In Flanders Fields Museum” in Ypres (Ieper), where he is director of exhibitions and public programming. He instigated the construction of a monument to mark the spot where the Irish poet Francis Ledwidge was killed by a shell in 1917: a monument jointly unveiled in 1998 by the poet Dermot Bolger and the poet’s nephew, Joseph Ledwidge.

At this event Piet Chielens and Dermot Bolger discuss the journeys of the young Irish soldiers which started in Collins Barracks and ended at the Somme or in the mud of Ypres and how they are remembered today.

Admission is free, but booking via the link below is required.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

The new government IS a Fine Gael – Fianna Fail coalition!

So they made it!! After 70 days finally a new government has been elected when on Friday Enda Kenny (Fine Gael) was re-elected as the Taoiseach.

It is called a “minority government” that is tolerated by Fianna Fail and supported by some of the Independent TDs. When the Taoiseach got elected, the Fianna Fail TDs abstained and therefore a handful of Independents was enough for Enda Kenny to get the majority.

Odd that Micheal Martin didn’t want to be in power since it was offered to him to be part of the government through a coalition. But the reason why Micheal Martin’s Fianna Fail didn’t want to get involved and form a Grand Coalition between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail is because they were worried that the electors would punish them for it in the next elections. In recent elections the smaller coalition partner (i.e. Greens and Labour) was always blamed more for a screw up of the government than the dominating party and Micheal Martin didn’t want to risk that.

So the solution was a to tolerate a minority Fine Gael government. But does that REALLY change the situation?

Is Fianna Fail now NOT part of the government and will they by innocent if Enda Kenny does a bad job?? Actually NOT AT ALL!! This is really a coalition between Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, just with the odd configuration that Fianna Fail will not contribute in a positive way in the day to day running of the country.

Why do I call it a coalition? Well, if you sit down with the other party for days and negotiate a “deal” that will last for three years, during which Fianna Fail will support whatever Fine Gael does then you can’t claim anymore that you are innocent! It is like standing next to someone who commits a criminal act and not doing anything. You will NOT get away with your “I had nothing to do with it!” claim.

So this new government is a Grand Coalition, just not by name! And if Enda Kenny screws up and Fianna Fail won’t stop him because they promised to support him for 3 years, then Fianna Fail will also have to be appropriately punished for it! Don’t fall for Micheal Martin’s trick!
