Hi all!

Here it is again. More than 200 events in this Dublin Event Guide. Dublin is keeping us busy and with the weather so great, you might just want to go for a walk in the park (any of the parks will do!!) or improvise a little and get a picnic together!? There is no big headline outdoors event this week. There will be a few next week and we can only hope that the weather goods consider that. ;-) So this week you are – to a degree – on your own a far as planned-for-you outdoors events go. But if you have kids, check the Joerg’s Picks section, where I mention two suitable destinations.

[ad]

Again I will have to send this Dublin Event Guide it in two stages. This is the final version of this week’s edition.

Unfortunately I need to mention the money situation again: We are in the middle of May and only EUR 50 of donations have arrived with me. The people that helped are great and I really thank you! But we need a few more to be able to pay the monthly bills which need EUR 190. So, there is only 14 days to find EUR 150. Can you help here?

And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 64,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), an American lecturer and poet. He said

For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness.

Good advise!! Let’s all have more happiness. ;-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Niamh S was the only wonderful person who supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Some weekends are quieter than others. There are still more than 200 events over this weekend and the coming week, but not really big headline events. Mind you, if you have children, you should check out the Family Day Festival on Sunday on Wolfe Tone Square and the Harold’s Cross Festival is taking place on Saturday AND Sunday. So for families there is something interesting to do.

If you don’t have kids, feel free to check out these two events as well because they are not only for families, but maybe the markets around Dublin are more your thing? Or just rent a bike in Phoenix Park and enjoy the weather out in the open without an organised event!?

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

EPIC Ireland – The Journey of the People

EPIC Ireland is Dublin’s newest visitor attraction. It is based in the beautiful basement of the CHQ Building at George’s Dock (IFSC) and only opened last week. The exhibition is telling the story of the people of Ireland and you can “travel” with them. Thanks to @DarraghDoyle and the EPIC Ireland management, I got a chance to “travel” through the whole exhibition nearly 3 weeks ago and here are my impressions.

When you arrive you get a passport that shows you the stations on your travels through the exhibition and you can get a stamp in every room. But then it starts quite gloomy, because the Irish history wasn’t a happy story for long stretches. Emigration, unemployment, poverty and even death were everywhere. But luckily the fog lifts soon and EPIC Ireland celebrates the successes, the Irish people that made it, for example the scientists that had an impact on the world. It also celebrates Irish culture (Music, Sport and Pubs, but also literature, film, TV etc) and there are rooms for every aspect of culture. One of the most impressive one is a library, where you can move some books in the shelves and you hear then a reading of a section of that book.

The whole exhibition is heavily built around multi-media presentations. Many of them are interactive, which means that you are not only a passive viewer, but can experience the exhibition to a degree. There are very few panels that you have to read as you find them in traditional museums, but there are also quite few real exhibits. So you wouldn’t call EPIC Ireland a museum, instead it is a show. A multimedia show that uses more (touch) screens than you have ever seen before in one place.

After 1.5 hours travelling with the Irish people I came to the “finish line” (I rushed it a bit and could have spent at least another 30-45 minutes there) and at that point I had to think about my opinion of the overall experience. Not easy because it is so different.

EPIC Ireland was built by the same people that are behind the Titanic Experience in Belfast, but I have never been there. So for me this was the first FULL ON multimedia (not-)museum show and it was TOO much multimedia for me. I like slowing down sometimes and reading something or looking at exhibits, at EPIC Ireland one show element was immediately followed by the next as you walked through the rooms and at times I couldn’t keep up. However, this is just my preference, so what should I tell you?

After thinking a bit about it, I came to a definite conclusion: If you are Irish or have some Irish roots, you should definitely go to EPIC Ireland. It won’t cover all, there are many gaps in the story, but you should go nevertheless. You will probably only go once, but when you go, give yourself at least 1.5 hours, better 2 hours.

So should everybody go? I think, that if you are not Irish or have no Irish roots, but are just in Ireland because you like the landscape or Irish music or you just work here and don’t care too much about the history of Ireland, then this show is not for you. Foreign tourists should definitely go to the National Museum, but unless they feel (partially) Irish, EPIC Ireland might not be for them. In other words: American tourists with Irish roots HAVE to go :-) , but Spanish, French, German etc etc tourists can live without it.

The show elements and the work behind it is absolutely impressive and while I missed a few elements about today’s Ireland (Music, TV, Film and Politics and Science & Technology) I am ok with the fact that even the historical parts are in many areas only skimming the surface. EPIC Ireland is not a comprehensive historic treatment of Ireland, but it is an EXPERIENCE of Ireland.

So, go when you can get a chance and if you can afford it and build your own opinion! I mentioned it here and in general left it until last: EPIC Ireland is, together with the Guinness Storehouse, the Wax Museum and also the 1916 Experience in the GPO part of the newer and costly visitor attractions. In the past Ireland was the country where the museums are free, but these good times are behind us. EPIC Ireland costs EUR 16 for an adult and EUR 8 for a child, but unlike in the Guinness Storehouse, there is no pint of beer waiting for you at the exit. ;-) So at that price, it is not something that many would go to without thinking. With the amount of work to create this show and the vast amount of flat screens (I am still not over that! ;-) ) I can see how the price is justified, but I also have to admit that I still find it very high.

Should you still go? Yes! Save for a little if you have to and then go. Spend all the time there that you need, because you will most likely not come back, but do it once!

Opening times are 7 days a week from 09:00-19:00. Tickets can be bought and more information can be found on www.epicirelandchq.com/

Sweeney’s Bar / Sweeney’s Mongrel Closing!!

Last week I had a question mark behind the headline. This week, it is unfortunately an exclamation mark! It has been confirmed that Sweeney’s Mongrel will close in June and it is not clear what will happen to the venue.

Sad news, but there is a small bit of hope that the pub will re-open and even continue to provide live music. Admittedly, though, the probability is not huge. It seems that the “touristification” of the whole area around Temple Bar means that there will be more “Wild Wild Rover” and “Whiskey in the Jar” musicians needed than Indie/Alternative/Rock etc bands. :-(

Spring Into Heritage – Events Programme – Dun Laoghaire Rathdown

The “Spring into Heritage 2016” programme, is a series of free guided tours over the next 10 weeks from 21 March until 29 May in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. It is a great programme that gives you a chance to learn more about the history of this part of greater Dublin. The National Maritime Museum, the Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre and a 1916 Graves tour in Deansgrange Cemetery were added new this year and there are also tours of the Oratory on Library Road in Dun Laoghaire, Cabinteely House and Marlay House.

If you are interested in history/heritage, check it out! A brochure with the tours can be downloaded here.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE RECOMMENDS ==

And you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie … or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Leonardo da Vinci – Ten Drawings from the Royal Collection

06 May – 17 July

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The National Gallery will exhibit ten of the finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). They are on loan from the Royal Collection and will be on show for 2.5 months.

Admission to the exhibition is free, but pre-booking is required. A timed ticketing system will be in operation.

You will get to the booking sites via www.nationalgallery.ie/Exhibitions/Leonardo.aspx

In Sight – Dublin through the lens of homeless people

until 29 May

Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, South William Street, Dublin 2

This is a very interesting exhibition. Lynsey Browne and Lucy Ryan gave 45 homeless people a disposable camera and invited them to use them to record scenes from their life. 30 cameras were returned and only 15 photographers came a second time to provide captions for the images.

Some of the pictures are shown at an exhibition in the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre. All pictures are on sale.

Some more information about the project is in an Irish Times article here. The In Sight project website is here: www.theinsightproject.ie/

Eurovision Song Contest – Final

20:00, Sat 14 May

Dublin (various locations)

Ireland’s entry, Nicky from Westlife, didn’t make it out of the Semi-Final, but the Eurovision Song Contest in Stockholm will still get a lot of attention. Not because it is an important event (anymore!) but because it has cult status by now and because some of the Eurovision parties are epic in their irreverance (meaning: lack of respect for people or things that are generally taken seriously).

One of the most popular screenings of the event take place in The George in George’s Street. If the Eurovision Song Contest is a serious song competition for you, do NOT go to The George! ;-)

I remember the hey days of the “Grand Prix de la Chanson” as it was called many years ago. When singers had to sing in the language of their country and when a song from Azerbaijan or Russia, sounded different to a song from Ireland, UK or Germany. But now they all sound the same! It seems only a rare few (e.g. France and Italy) stand out a little because they still don’t use English. Ohh and what do you think about Australia being now part of it as well? Mad! ;-)

The end of the world as we know it – Gig Night

20:00, Sat 14 May

Sweeney Mongrel’s, 32 Dame Street, Dublin 2

Yes, the bad news that I mentioned with a question mark last week has been confirmed! Sweeney’s Mongrel is closing and with one of the once best free live music venues will close. I am saying “once best”, because things were not the same anymore in recent months. But back in the good days of Sweeney’s, the place was buzzing with liive gigs on three floors.

To celebrate what has been, they will invite some of the best bands and performers. The event announcement for this Saturday doesn’t make clear if this is a concret event this week or only a forward looking statement of intent.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Suicide is sad, but NO shameful act!! – Only openness helps!

It REALLY makes me angry how mental health is dealt with in Ireland. It is a serious serious problem and everybody who is listened to by the media says “We need to talk more openly about mental health!” and the media happily publishes these contributions, but when it comes to it, they are as useless as everybody else.

On Friday morning, while looking for events and news, I had a quick look at the thejournal.ie website and saw an article entitled “Body of missing teenager located”. A 17 year old girl that went missing on Tuesday was found dead. VERY sad!!

But it doesn’t stop there! If something like that happens, we all want (and need) to know why. Was it an accident or a crime or something else? We WANT to know, because we need to deal with our own feelings about news like that. Many of us are (hopefully) not yet so insensitive that we just ignore it and move on. In addition, the “need to know” is a form of self protection: If it was a crime, maybe I have to be more careful or have to watch out better over my own loved ones. If it was an accident, maybe I can learn something from it as well. Either way, we really shouldn’t ignore the cause of death,

BUT, the media AND the police AND many normal people absolutely want to ignore it if the cause was the unspeakable SUICIDE and it really makes me furious.

The article said “A garda spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that the teenager’s death is being treated as a tragedy.” Does that translate to anything else but suicide? I don’t think so! But why can it not be said? Why is the fact sooo shameful that you can not reveal the S-word?

There was a 17 year old girl with a potentially great future and huge opportunities ahead of her, but sadly she didn’t see the alternatives and nobody in her life was able to show or convince her that there ARE alternatives to ending your life. Whatever stressed her seemingly was so big that she didn’t see any alternatives and didn’t want to endure the pain any longer. Yes, it is a tragedy, but by making it a secret, we will help nobody.

Many people experience that and the suicide rate in Ireland is shockingly high, but unless we talk about it openly, it will get worse.

I would claim that nearly everyone thought about ending his or her life at some stage. Maybe it was as a 10 year old after your parents were telling you off or maybe it was much later after a separation from a partner or after any other significant life event or just because you intermittently go through dark periods in your life where continuing the struggle makes no sense anymore. So it affects us all, either directly or indirectly.

Suicide is a problem solver for everybody who considers it or who carries it out. The big issue is, however, that the majority of problems that we feel and experience could become temporary problems if we approach them with help and support, but suicide is final. Hence the phrase: Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. (A phrase that makes sense when you are not suicidal, but is not very helpful when you don’t see any alternatives.)

We need to talk about all aspects of mental health, including suicide to make sure that everyone understands that it is not a shame to feel so bad that you are considering it. And at the same time to offer help and support.

But why can we not talk about suicide? For starters it is seen by some in society still as a failure. A failure to cope. A failure to deal with the stuff life throws at us. And then there is the stigma caused by the Catholic Church, that says suicide is a sin. And if the parents of someone who died from suicide live in a largely catholic Ireland, they will definitely feel that they should see as their failure but maybe even that their son or daughter did some condemnable act. It is neither! And parents or other family members should never feel guilty in the context of suicide.
But there is also a very odd taboo-isation that comes from a false sense of “Political Correctness”. Many feel that it is discriminating to use some words. That’s rubbish! The word is not offensive, but the meaning might be. You can absolutely say that someone is “black” or “g ay” even if some of us feel very uneasy using these words because we are frightened into a political correctness thinking. “Suicide” is also NOT a forbidden word!
And finally, there is the thinking in some people that if we talk about suicide, we make it “normal” and then give others the idea that it is ok to harm themselves. Nonsense!! You talk about breakins and lots of other crimes for many many years and it hasn’t become the norm either!

Please talk openly about mental health including suicide! Only then you can get others who need your help to understand that you might be someone they can turn to if they are looking for help!
