Dublin Event Guide 466: Dockland’s Summer Festival, National Drawing Day, Family Market, Moveable Feast, How? – Science&Technology Festival

The popular radio show No es un día cualquiera (RNE) will be at Instituto Cervantes Dublin on Saturday and Sunday with Pepa Fernández, José María Íñigo, Andrés Aberasturi, Nieves Concostrina and special guest Leoncio Alonso González de Gregorio (22nd Duke of Medina Sidonia), who will offer his contribution as historian and descendant of the 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia, who commanded the Spanish Armada in 1588.

The event is part of the “Revisiting the Spanish Armada’s Irish Experience” programme.

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The International Literature Festival Dublin (ILFD) will run from 21-29 May and it is organised by the Dublin City Council Arts Office. There will be readings, discussions, debates, workshops, performance and screenings and poetry, fiction and non-fiction will be represented.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

Run Logic are inviting to a gentle 5km run in Dublin with author and distance runner Frank Greally.

Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below. A second run will take place next Saturday (29 May) and you can already book that run as well.

This event is part of the International Literary Festival Dublin.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Four free Yoga sessions take place in MVP in Dublin 8 every Saturday and every Sunday. The times are 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 13:00 and the duration is 1 hour. At every session only 8 places are available, so get your bookings in early (you can book weeks in advance).

On Saturday is National Drawing Day and what better venue than the National Gallery as a focal point for this event. But it is not limited to the National Gallery! Over 160 Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Centres across Ireland will take part!!

The National Gallery will run the following events on that day:

10:30: Launch of National Drawing Day by Artist Geraldine O’Neill ARHA with a talk about the fundamentals of drawing.

11:00-16:00 Artists’ Drawing Demonstrations will take place throughout the day. Artists are Comhall Casey, Alan Daly, Vera Klute, Cian McLoughlin, and Saoirse Wall. (Suitable for all – Drop-in)

11:00-13:00 Life Drawing & Still Life. A team of artists will lead visitors in drawing sessions in the galleries. Artists: Michelle Boyle, Grainne Dowling, Fintan Mahon, and Dorothy Smyth. (Adults – Drop-in)

15:00-16:00 Open Drawing. Create your own Renaissance-themed work, inspired by the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

For the last 18 years the Calcutta Run has taken place. It is a 5km + 10km Charity Run by the legal profession in Ireland. If your job is in that field, you know about it. If not, you probably have never heard about it. In the last 18 years more than 3mio was raised for charities and this year another 150k will probably be added.

The run is not free and registration is closed now, but you can still cheer on the runners and there is also a BBQ in the Garden of the Law Society building where you can buy your food and enjoy the atmosphere. The BBQ is for participants but also for their families and supporters (that’s you!).

The run goes from Blackhall Place to Phoenix Park and back.

The Dublin Dockland’s Summer Festival will happen this Saturday and Sunday. From 11:00-17:00 on both days there will be activities on land and on the water.

On land a Mini-Funfair and a Food Market will take place and from around the Grand Canal Dock, you can watch the water activities: Wakeboard Demonstrations, Trick Wakeboarding at the Wakedock (Sat+Sun: 15:00-16:00), Raft Racing (Sat+Sun: 14:00), Charity Rubber Duck Race (Sat+Sun: 16:30), Floating Golf Challenge.

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The market has now grown to 40 stalls offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

On National Drawing Day this Saturday, Artzone is providing visual art activities for children at Farmleigh House.

The junior group (5+) will sketch ducks in the Farmleigh Pond and the senior kids (8+) will draw self portraits “Selfies in the Park”. This ties in with Farmleigh’s ‘Portraits of a Nation’ exhibition which is running until 29 May in the Farmleigh Gallery.

Admission is free and spaces will be allocated on a first come first served basis on the day.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

Little John Nee (writer, performer, storyteller and musician) will bring his “Emporium of Everyday Magic” to Cow’s Lane outside of the Gutter Bookshop. Performances will take place every hour at 12:00/13:00/14:00 and 15:00 and they will last 30 minutes.

The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.

From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

Come and meet Frank Greally, the distance runner and editor of Irish Runner whose autobiography “Running Full Circle”, was published last year.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). Prizewinning cacti and succulents will be shown at this seventh biennial Cactus Show. It will be held in the Teak House and the judging this year will be by the Chairman of the Cactus and Succulent Society in Ireland, Kevin Whelehan. After the judging on Saturday, the show will open at 13:00. On Sunday it will be open from 10:00-17:00.

The Bernard Shaw Flea Market is a weekly market (every Saturday) with approx 16 stalls, music, pizzas from the Big Blue Bus and the Bernard Shaw Garden Bar. Expect vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac and more and DJs will provide the entertainment.

Marsh’s Library is inviting to “A Girl’s Eye View of the Irish Revolution”, a free public talk by Dr Marnie Hay.

This talk will explore the experiences of three adolescent girls who left their impression of the events of the Irish Revolution in the form of a diary, a witness statement and several poems. Seventeen-year-old Jessica Taylor not only witnessed the 1916 Easter Rising, but wrote a daily account of what she saw and heard in her diary.
Former Clann na Gael Girl Scout Mary McLoughlin later related her experiences as a fifteen-year-old courier during the rebellion in a witness statement collected by James Connolly’s daughter Ina.
Cork schoolgirl Mary Dalton reflected on the events of the War of Independence and the subsequent split over the Anglo-Irish Treaty through poetry. All three provide a girl’s eye view of the revolution.

The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After ’16” short films. After ’16 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.

The screenings will take place in a variety of Library branches. Admission is free, but booking is recommended and you will find the relevant phone numbers for the branches via the website below.

On Sunday cycling teams from all over Ireland will join Irish and International pro-cycling teams as they warm up for the “An Post Ras” which will start in Dublin and will go over 145km to Multyfarnham in Co. Wetmeath for the first stage.

The teams will warm up from 09:30 and get ready iIn the ower court yard of Dublin Castle.

Then at 11:45, the 185 riders will take off from Cork Hill towards Phoenix Park and the proper race will start once they reach Clonee.

The Garda Band and Face Painting and some competitions and the 2FM roadcaster will provide the entertainment at the start.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

A Family Market with over 40 craft stalls with hand made products, music and art workshops for kids, potty training and elimination communication talk for parents, free story reading, free face painting & kids play corner, designated buggy area, organic food, cakes & coffees!

“Forgotten Voices” is a 2-hour walking tour that will explore the lives of the people who lived in Dublin’s inner city from the Georgian Period to the middle of the last century.

Moveable Feast is part of the Dublin Dance Festival and it is a family feast of dance and entertainment in Merrion Square.

Every Sunday, the National Botanic Gardens invite to two guided walks. The first one is at 12:00 and the second one at 14:30.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The Big Dig is an Archaeology event for children (5-12 years) in Shanganah Park in Shankill. It takes place there while the DLR Science Festival “HOW?” also is happening in the park.

The School of Irish Archaeology is running this replica ‘Viking House’ workshop and excavation. Children will explore the Viking world through a simulated and controlled archaeology dig where they have the opportunity to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist by learning how to excavate the remains of a Viking house and to find Viking treasures and artefacts dating back over 1000 years.

Admission is free, but booking is required and at the time of writing this, only tickets for the 17:00 slot were still available.

“The Wall” is a play about mental health and communication in today’s society. Written and performed by Fionnuala Ryan and Emma Cooke, the event is part of the International Literature Festival Dublin.

A remarkable event at London’s National Gallery assembled the largest ever collection of Leonardo’s surviving paintings for a unique exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan”.

Molecular Biologist Dr. How will be at How? to help younger children learn by doing rather than seeing in the Science Wows area. It will be interactive, hands-on, real science with great experiments, facts, games and quizzes. On the day, Dr. How will answer loads of questions only science has the answer to. Questions like: Why do trees grow?, Why is the sea salty?, Why do we hiccup? and Why is the sea blue?. Experiments will be conducted on topics such as Clouds, Sounds, Bubbles and Light.

WHIZZKIDS
WhizzKids will teach the basics of coding on a first come first served basis during How?. It will be a short crash course throughout the event to give the curious an introduction to the code that powers our digital world. Its designed for all abilities and will start with the basics in a way that will be both fun & educational. If you want to take part on Sunday you will need to bring a WiFi enabled lapotop.

As part of the 1916-2016 Centenary Commemorations, a free tour will take at Arbour Hill Cemetery every Sunday at 14:00. (from March until end of October).

No booking necessary. The meeting point is at the 1916 Memorial Wall towards the back of the cemetery.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“Ada Gentile: Her work, a Life in Music” is a talk about composer and pianist Ada Gentile.

“Ada Gentile took her piano and composition diplomas at S.Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. She has won several international composition competitions (Gaudeamus 1982, I.S.C.M. Budapest 1986, I.S.C.M. Essen 1995) . Her works have been performed in prestigious musical centres around the world. She has been Art Director of the contemporary music Festival “Nuovi Spazi Musicali” since 1978; from 1993 until 1997 was on the board of the Venice Biennale and, from August 1996 until December 1999, she was Art Director of the lyric theatre V. Basso in Ascoli Piceno.”

Emily Gallagher will run a weekly “just for fun” photo trail where you get instructions to hunt for specific snaps around the city centre. Afterwards the symbolic significance to the snaps will be shared. The overall theme is “Get a glimpse of directions you may wish your life to take and discover decisions you may desire to make.”

“The Invention of Italy – 1982: Pertini and the world champions” with John Foot is a talk about the links between national identity, the Italian football team and the ways in which that identity has been strengthened and weakened by its relationship with national sporting prowess and occasional disaster.

In 1982 Italy won the World Cup in a 3-1 victory over West Germany. The Italian President, the diminutive anti-fascist ex-partisan Sandro Pertini, celebrated in the stands. In Italy a wild party would continue for days. The game itself attracted a record TV audience, never equalled before or since. Italy was united in sporting triumph.

Today is this years’s National Fish & Chips Day in all chippers that are part of the Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA). On their Facebook Page is a picture of the poster and their logo so that you can check if your local chipper is part of ITICA.

The Irish Film Board present their collection of “After ’16” short films. After ’16 is commemorating and celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in 1916.

The nine short films that make up the collection are a creative response by Irish filmmakers to the 1916 events. The stories told are a mixture of live action drama, animation and documentary. The full list of films in the series can be found on the website below.

The book “Made in Africa: Learning to Compete in Industry” by Professor Carol Newman et al. will be launched at this event In the TRISS Seminar Room on the 6th floor in the Arts Building.

“Made in Africa” presents the key results of Learning to Compete (L2C), a multi-year, comparative research program investigating the seemingly simple, but frustratingly puzzling question: Why is there so little industry in Africa?

The book launch will be chaired by Kevin Dowling, the Director for Southern Africa with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, and will feature short presentations by two of the book’s authors, Professor Carol Newman (Associate Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin) and Professor Finn Tarp (Director of UNU-WIDER). Light refreshments will be served after the presentations.

The Latin American Solidarity Centre is inviting to their next LASC Wednesday Talk:

“From Puerto Rico to the Dublin Docklands: Vulture Funds and debt in Ireland and the Global South”

Dr Michael Byrne (UCD School of Social Policy), author of the report, and Maeve Bateman (DDCI Director) will present its findings, including the risks posed by vulture funds in the Irish context, the experience of the Global South and the role of the Irish government, including recommendations for next steps.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in Whelan’s.

Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

In the Archaeology of a Decade of War Lecture Series, the next lecture is “The Archaeological Landscape of WWI in Flanders” where Prof. Dr. Jean Bourgeois and Dr. Birger Stichelbaut (Ghent University) discuss how thanks to aerial photographs from WWI and modern archaeological techniques, laser scanning, and geophysical analysis, it is possible to reconstruct the landscape of World War 1. This talk will bring you a detailed analysis of some sites and also show the complexity of this landscape of war: front line trenches, backlines, artillery positions, ammunition depots, rest areas, hospitals and cemeteries, airfields etc.

It’s time to discuss how art and artists can reach across political, cultural, geographic and socio-economic divides and approach the urgent matters of today: migration, identity, mobility, territory – absence and silence.

Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts and the Dublin Dance Festival invite an international panel of arts practitioners to discuss some of the issues.

The Panel includes: Eckhard Thiemann, an independent international curator, producer and arts manager and Artistic Director of Shubbak, the London-wide festival of contemporary Arab culture; Karthika Naïr, an award-winning French-Indian poet and dance producer, and principal scriptwriter of Akram Khan’s Chotto Desh; and festival artist Euripides Laskaridis, a Greek stage director, short-filmmaker and performer (Relic).

Midwife of a Nation is a play about the women of 1916: the dispatchers, the doctors, the gunrunners, the nurses and the smugglers. Sing! Dance! Remember! This performances will be for older people affected by dementia and their carers.

The incredible artistry of nanny and closet street photographer Vivian Maier came to light and went viral in 2007 when John Maloof discovered 100,000 of her negatives in Chicago. Now Maloof and Charlie Siskel bring this formerly unknown artist’s gorgeous black-and-white photos and remarkable life story to the big screen.

In Conversation is a series of events by the Association of Irish Composers about new music. This month two composers will talk about their work with text, their collaborations with writers and the relationships between music and the written word.

Michael Holohan will talk about his long friendship with poet Seamus Heaney, about setting Heaney’s poems about childhood, the letters they wrote each other throughout their long collaboration and the projects that were left unfinished.
Karen Power will discuss her collaboration with writer Lance Olsen, developing a performance piece based on extracts from his book Dreamlives of Debris.

Jenny Mitcalf uses the Fáilte Ireland Photographic Collection and the guide books of the period to explore how Dublin has been portrayed to visitors during the last century. The changes in emphasis in terms of places and activities through the decades are examined.
