Hi all!
I have to do a two-stage posting of this Dublin Event Guide again. A early version is going out now on the website and on the smart phone app and then a whole lot of additional events have to be added, which will take another 1.5 hours. When the Dublin Event Guide is completed, I will send the e-mail as well. The information in the brackets below will be changed to “final” when it is completed.
[This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.]
[ad]
It is an extremely busy weekend this week and the weekend is just the warm-up for the St. Patrick’s Festival, so get ready for LOTS of events over the next 10 days. That’s not a complaint, by the way! :-)
Great new on the donation front! EUR 80 were donated by wonderful people last week, that’s a big help. Thanks for all the support!
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from Albert Einstein, who often new what he was talking about ;-)- He said…
A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.
Einstein said it! I have nothing more to add! :-)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Brendan M, Gareth G, Martina B, Deirdre C, Gennadii N, Rachael McC and Fiona D were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week there is a lot happening! For animal lovers check out Pawsitivity in Merrion Square, then you can view the most expensive coin in the world at the Flowing Hair Dollar Exhibition. Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is on and Smithfield Market Fair also takes place. The Science Gallery has a new exhibition and all this is just the warm up for the St. Patrick’s Day Festival from Thursday.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Luas replacement on St. Patrick’s Day + More Luas strikes
Due to the Luas strike on St. Patrick’s Day a lot of family were worried that getting into the City Centre would not be possible this year.
But there is good news; The company Transdev, that runs the Luas, has announced on Friday that they will make a bus service available from the Luas Park & Ride car parks on the Green Line and Red Line into the city centre and back. The service will run from 07:30-19:00 every 10-15 minutes and all details can be found on the Luas website here: www.luas.ie/customer-notice-17thmar16/
Meanwhile, the Luas drivers seem to be determined to do whatever possible to lose all support from the public. Another four strike days have now been announced to force their salary increase claim of 53% through, that are deemed as “unjustifiable” and “outrageous” by most people commenting on it in public forums. The additional strike days are 02, 03, 23 and 24 April, which are added to the strike days on St. Patrick’s Day and Easter Sunday and Easter Monday (17, 27, 28 March).
Surprisingly for many, I would expect that the strike on St. Patrick’s Day will probably affect a lot less people than the strike on Easter Monday: The only big event on St. Patrick’s Day is the parade in the city centre where the organisers claim that 500,000 people will be in he city, but the real number will be well below 250,000 as I had outlined a few years ago. On Easter Monday on the other hand, more than 300 family-friendly events will take place in the City Centre at the “Reflecting the Rising” event and significantly more people are expected to come to the City Centre.
|
Reflecting the Rising – Huge Easter Rising Event – Registration required
On Easter Monday (28 March), Dublin will be buzzing with more than 300 events to commemorate the Easter Rising. There will be talks, workshops, gigs & concerts, performances, children activities, a parade and lots more all over Dublin’s City Centre.
The events are free, but registration is required for most events and you should register as soon as possible, because tickets will go very fast.
Go to www.rte.ie/1916 to find out all details and get to the registration links.

Patricks and Patricias get in free – Guinness Storehouse
Like in previous years, the Guinness Storehouse invites all Patricks, Patricias and every other person with a name that is clearly and directly related to the name Patrick (including international variants) into the Guinness Storehouse for free on St. Patrick’s Day. The list of all permissible names can be found here. There will be music from visiting marching bands, from the Dublin group Na Fianna and from other “musical surprises”. There will also be some Guinness tasting and you can learn how to pull a perfect pint.
To get in for free, just turn up on the day and makes sure that you bring some valid ID.
All fine if you want to go alone, however, if you want to bring some friends who are not called Patrick etc, then they will have to pay the full price of the (very steep) EUR 20 admission charge.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. 10:00 – 17:00, Sat 12 Mar

The Flowing Hair Dollar will be in Ireland for the first time and it will be accompanied by an original copy of the Declaration of Independence that was printed in 1776 and other coin collections, illustrating the history of the US Dollar.

Dublin University Boat Races – Gannon Cup
12:00, Sat 12 Mar
O’Connell Bridge, Dublin 1
Like the rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge that leads to a famous rowing boat race between the two, there is a rivalry between Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin decided by a yearly rowing race.
This Saturday the crews will be on the Liffey again to compete against each other. Starting line is at the O’Connell Bridge and finish line is at St. James’ Gate.
There will be four races with the highlight being the last race for the Gannon Cup. The start times are
+ 12:00 Sally Moorehead Trophy – Novice Women + 12:25 Dan Quinn Shield – Novice Men + 12:50 Corcoran Cup – Senior Women + 13:15 Gannon Cup – Senior Men
These are the most up-to-date times and they are slightly different than earlier publicised times.
The bridges on the way or the Liffey wall are great points for spectators to see the race. But it seems that another way of observing the race in previous years was by following it by bike and since the Liffey Quays are a public road, you could expect that this shouldn’t be a problem. However, for some reason the Gardai have forbidden this for 2016. The organisers are making now six buses available that will follow the race and using the buses is free.

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.
From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 13 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
12:00, Thu 17 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The St. Patrick’s Day Parade starts at 12:00 at Parnell Square, continues down O’Connell Street and then crosses the Liffey on O’Connell Bridge. Just in time for the parade, the Luas building works were completed at College Green, so the parade continues to Westmoreland Street, College Green, Dame Street and then goes to Christ Church were it turns left to St. Patrick’s Cathedral and then ends.
Up to 250,000 people will line the parade route (don’t believe the “official” numbers of 500,000, they are totally over-exaggerated) and that is a large amount for such a short route.
If you want to see the parade well (especially with children), you will have to watch it on TV! Or alternatively come well before 10:00 to town. Last year some people told me that they arrived at 08:00 to get a front row place. The place where you have the best chance to see something is between Christ Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral at the end of the parade. O’Connell Street or Dame Street are totally overcrowded.
The St. Patrick’s Day parade is a yearly institution. But like with all “institutions”, the excitement about it has gone lost a bit and it would be good to shake the parade up again.
While it has significantly improved in comparison to the earlier years of the festival, for the last 5-7 years no substantial change has been made. The themes that are given out every year are not really having much of a differentiation effect on the floats and as a visitor to the parade, you might as well forget about the theme as you won’t recognise it in the floats.
The route has not changed for many years and is much too short to give people a proper chance to see the parade (if you are in O’Connell Street or in Dame Street and didn’t arrive really early in the morning, you will not see anything!) The first 3 rows of people can see something, after that you see whatever is higher than 2 metres and you will hear the bands. The rest is out of sight and out of reach.
The (American) Marching Bands are good in most years and are the most impressive part of the parade, but in general there is too much “same old, same old” for the parade to be a must-go event.
After the parade, I recommend that you leave the City Centre quickly again and stay away from areas like Temple Bar or Grafton Street. Drunken youngsters really spoil the fun and the fact that there is not much else happening apart from getting drunk is a big weakness of the St. Patrick’s Day plans. This year the Gaelstage is at Earlsfort Terrace, but since this event is targeting Irish speakers only, it probably has limited appeal.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Dublin Bay Prawn Festival
12:00 – 18:00, Fri 18 Mar
Howth (various locations)
The Dublin Bay Prawn Festival is back from Friday 18 March until Sunday 20 March and you might be surprised to read about it already.
It indeed is more than a month earlier than in previous years AND it overlaps with the St. Patrick’s Day Festival. So this is either an inspired move or one of the worst decisions possible, I love the Dublin Bay Prawn Festival, but for me it is definitely a good weather festival. With March being still a good colder and because the weekend is already busy with lots of events in Dublin, I will probably not get to the Prawn Festival in Howth and therefore I am definitely not happy about the change. What do you think? Let me know via dublineventguide@gmail.com
The festival starts on Friday at 12:00 and there will be cooking demonstrations and live music among many other (free and non-free) events. The programme is here: www.dublinbayprawnfestival.ie/friday-24th-april/

St. Patrick’s Day Ceili
16:30, Fri 18 Mar
National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 2
The St. Patrick’s Day Ceili is a public, outdoor Irish Dancing event. A stage is built near the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace and Traditional Irish Music groups will perform on it. A Ceili caller will teach you the dances and then you give it a go on the street.
The Ceili is a lot of fun if you give it a go, but if you have the disfortune of being employed in Ireland, you will not get much of a chance to take part of it, because the starting time is a little early even for people that work in the City Centre. Luckily the Ceili will continue for a while, so check it after work, it might still be in full swing.
Admission is free.

12 Angry Jurors – Play

12 Angry Jurors by the Clontarf Players is based on the same play the film was based on and if they perform it only half as good as the cast in the movie, you have to see it!
The Clontarf Players have three performances planned on 18, 19 and 20 March in different churches in the area. The first one is on Friday in St. Joseph’s Church, also known as Bonnybrook Church.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
The end of the Au Pair in Ireland?
Over the last 10-15 years I have met and talked to Au Pairs from many countries (e.g. Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Brazil and Mexico). In all cases, they have stayed in Ireland for 1-3 years, are still in contact with their host family, did come back numerous times, brought many friends with them when they came back and would have liked to send their children in a few years time to Ireland too. They all arrived with very limited English skills and left with a good command of the language, the culture and a love for Ireland.
Their host families were fair, gave them plenty of time off, good food, proper accommodation, in some cases even holidays away and while the work was not always easy, especially if you are not trained in child minding, they all look back to their time in Ireland as deeply enriching, extremely educational and with a massive influence on their lives since they were here for all the right reasons.
The positive experience by the Au Pairs I met is, however, contrasted by some horror stories of host families from hell and it seems that there are more than we would like to think. In these bad scenarios, the Au Pair was stuck in a place far away from a language school or other au pairs, had limited opportunities or permission to leave the home during the week and was tasked with so much work or soo many young children that they despaired and in all cases left the host family to go to a new and much more considerate family.
So, yes, there are bad apples among the au pair host parents, but it seems that the vast majority does not belong in this category. And because leaving a family doesn’t seem to be the biggest problem, a solution was found in ALL cases.
During the week, a different case got a LOT of media attention.
A Spanish Au Pair was seemingly in a family that demanded more from her than typically should be expected from an Au Pair. An Au Pair is expected to work up to 35 hours per week in the family, mainly looking after the children and often some household chores are also added to it. In return they get accommodation, food and pocket money of around EUR 400 per month. This is not a huge amount and with Dublin prices won’t allow you to live in luxury, but is more than some families have left over at the end of the month in Dublin.
The Spanish Au Pair was given more work than that and less free time. She was from August 2014 until January 2015 in that host family and at times just worked 30 hours, but for a short period of time in November, she was looking after the children for up to 11 hours per day, for 6 days per week when one of the parents was away. In return she got double the pocket money (EUR 200) and if you do the calculation (she got 100 Euro more for 36 hours of work more than in other weeks), then she got the extremely low salary of EUR 2.77 per hour.
That’s not enough and there is no question that the family should have paid her more during that period. However, the Spanish Au Pair decided to go to the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC; in the past this was called the Labour Court) to complain about the slave work. She won the case, the family paid her EUR 9229 and now it looks as she single-handedly triggered the end of the Au Pairs in Ireland.
The WRC decided that she should have received at least a minimum salary, BUT also that the maximum value the accommodation and food can be given is EUR 54.13 per week. Maybe the WRC needs to check where in Dublin you can get an own room with all bills paid and food included for EUR 216.52 per month?
There are 20,000 (!!!) Au Pairs in Ireland every year and as a result of that ruling, it seems that many families have decided already to end their relationship with their Au Pair, because they fear that they will have to pay thousands in salaries. And therefore, this probably is the start of the end of Au Pairs in Ireland.
But let me be straight: The abuse of a relatively vulnerable position of an Au Pair in a family is not and should never be acceptable, so 30 hours for EUR 100 is NOT ok. However, if we assume the Au Pair works 30 hours per week, so 120 hours per month and is an untrained worker in the first year of the job (most come directly after school), then the lower minimum salary rate of EUR 7.32 applies and therefore a monthly salary of EUR 878.40 would have to be paid. Now let’s subtract the REAL value of accommodation and food of maybe EUR 400 per month and then we have EUR 478.40 left. Divide it by 4 weeks and surprisingly you arrive at EUR 120, which is not that far away from the EUR 100.
So, instead of killing the Au Pair opportunity for foreign young adults, it should be formalised (as it is the case in the UK) and clear guidelines should be providd. If it was limited to 30 hours per week of light work with a weekly pocket money of EUR 150 would that not be an acceptable compromise?
The Migrants Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI), who worked on this case on behalf of the Spanish Au Pair, and the WRC don’t seem to think so, but from my chats with Au Pairs in good families, they are NOT helping the young adults who want to experience Ireland and learn English for a few months or the (good) families who are happy to reward and respect their Au Pair in an appropriate way, but don’t want to get into becoming employers.
It feels as part from that one Spanish Au Pair, everybody involved is a loser since this case has been decided.
