A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

This is the second last weekend for “Trauma”. Go, if you haven’t visited it yet:

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The people and shops at 74 Francis Street are inviting you to their Valentine Dress Up event.

There are: Two Pups Coffee (stocking 3fe and Cloudpicker coffee), Kikis Booteeki (vintage clothing), Velvet Moon (soul enhancing haircuts & dreadlocks) and Lucy loves Francis (sister to Lucy’s Lounge in Temple Bar).

They will supply a big box of dresses, wigs accessories etc with lights and camera set up for the perfect posing opportunity. The Citywide Reading Campaign for Children is run by Dublin UNESCO City of Literature and Dublin City Council’s Libraries Service and it will last from January to March 2016.

This year’s book is “The Book of Learning” by E.R. Murray. It is a story of mystery and adventure which includes a visit to the National Library.

On Saturday at 14:00 the author of this year’s book, E.R. Murray, will be in the National Library for a reading and a book signing. In addition children will learn how to draw one of the main characters and walk the book trail.

This is a specially commissioned gallery tour by artist Eimear Walshe. This tour will bring audiences on a journey through a disrupted history of the Hugh Lane Gallery using feminist arthistorical strategies. It will provide an introduction to the work of some of the women in the Collection, and discuss the history of radical feminist activism that inspired Jesse Jones’ exhibition “No More Fun And Games”.

The Progressive Film Club this time is showing two documentaries in association with Friends of the Earth. The theme is “Women and the Environment” and the films are

Dun Laoghaire is economically in Dublin’s shadow and its harbour is fledgling.

When they also lost the regular ferry service to Holyhead because it didn’t make sense for Stena Lines to run a ferry to Dublin Harbour and to Dun Laoghaire, they were trying to turn things around with big cruise liners.

But again Dun Laoghaire is competing with Dublin and if I was a cruise liner passenger, I would prefer to go for a day trip to Dublin and NOT to Dun Laoghaire.

The solution was to turn the ferry port into a port for massive cruise liners, but that costs a HUGE amount of money and it is doubtful that it is a good business decision.

Dun Laoghaire’s councillors voted against the re-development of the harbour and a public consultation was also very much in favour of not adapting to cruise liners. But now the Country Manager in Dun Laoghaire is trying to overturn the decision and force the harbour re-development.

The Save our Harbour initiative invites to a Public Meeting on Saturday afternoon.

The talk “Living and Working in Ireland” for Spanish speaking immigrants will take place. It will be in Spanish and is organised by the Association of Spanish-speaking Parents in Ireland (ASPI).

Nearly all pubs in Ireland will screen this Rugby game on Saturday. The two biggest goals of winning the Grand Slam or the Triple Crown are already out of reach after the draw against Wales, but winning the remaining four games would still be the fans preference.The kick off will be at 15:25.

Born in a tenement on North King Street on 12 February 1916, Bob Doyle experienced dire poverty and became interested in left wing politics from a young age. He became politically active in the early 1930s joining the IRA after suffering a serious eye injury during street fights with fascists in Dublin. He later joined the Republican Congress and went to support the Spanish Republic, following the fascist coup in 1936. He made his way there in 1937, aged 21, and was captured by Italian fascists in 1938 at the battle of Belchite, a small town in Aragon in the north east of the Spanish state. He was held in the Burgos concentration camp, and was released almost a year later in a prisoner exchange deal. At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the British merchant navy and after the war his family settled in London.

In 2006 he published his biography “Brigadista – An Irishman’s Fight Against Fascism”. Bob died in January 2009 aged 92.

On Saturday there will be a talk about his life in the Cobblestone and speakers are Harry Owens and Manus O’Riordan.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

In addition to the market stalls, there will be workshops and performances: A Bulgarian folk group will do a dance performance at 14:00 and 14:45 and a Capoeira performance will follow from 14:15. A free Tai Chi workshop will be from 13:30-14:30. Other workshops are not free and they are all listed on the Facebook site below.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

To celebrate St. Valentine’s Day, one of the National Gallery’s most popular watercolours, “The Meeting on the Turret Stairs” by Frederic William Burton will be on display for just two hours on Sunday. The painting is housed in a specially made cabinet in the Gallery’s ESB Centre for the Study of Irish Art due to the delicate nature of the work. It is on display for only two hours every week.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The “Love Tokens Family Tour” is an opportunity to explore the romantic histories of objects on display in the Museum’s collections with Lisa Flanagan. The tour will focus on the fashion and furniture exhibitions, ‘The Way We Wore’ and ‘Irish Country Furniture’.

Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

“Shaping Narratives: Opera, Film Music and Technological Approaches” with composer, performer and academic Jürgen Simpson (Digital Media and Arts Research Centre, University of Limerick) is a talk by the Music Composition Centre.

In late 1911, the last dynasty of China, the Qing, which had ruled the Chinese empire since 1644, was toppled in a few short months in a relatively peaceful revolution. This ended 2,000 years of dynastic rule and ushered in a transformative period of republican governance, nationalism and anti-imperialism and the rise of communism. In this centenary year of the Easter Rising of 1916, Dr Isabella Jackson (Assistant Professor in Chinese History in the Department of History and the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin) will reflect on the same revolutionary period in China, revealing similarities and differences between the two anti-imperial revolutionary movements.

“The History of the Manifesto as a literary form” is a talk by Nathan O’Donnell.

He will look at manifestos, who were originally a tool for outlining alternative religious and political programmes and were then in the 20th century adopted by artistic and political radicals across Europe, including the 1916 rebels. The Manifesto became a statement of hope.

This talk will explore some of the utopian visions outlined in the great manifestos, but will also consider the limits and logistics involved in producing them and the ways in which so many of them failed.

“Hysteria” is a performance art film that will be screened from Tues 16-Sun 21 February from 20:00 until 08:00 at the Science Gallery. You can watch it from Pearse Street and headphones are available to listen to the atmospheric score that accompanies the film.

It is screened in connection with the curernt Science Gallery exhibition TRAUMA and expresses the trauma that soldiers experienced who came back from fighting in Word War I.

Maurice Keliher is a choreographer, director and actor and he was comissioned to create this film. It features military medical footage, sourced from the Wellcome Library, that was filmed at two English hospitals during World War I. It documents the anguish of some of the patients: symptoms of so-called ‘war neurosis’ suffered by returning soldiers – now referred to as PTSD.

The film is 16 minutes long and will be repeated throughout the nights until the TRAUMA exhibition closes next Sunday.

“Rosc: Crossroads of Conflict & Celebration” is a screening of the award-winning film “Rosc: Poetry of Vision” produced and directed by Ciarín Scott followed by a lecture by Dr Brenda Moore-McCann.

The six Rosc were the most influential exhibitions to have been held in Ireland in the 20th century. They put Ireland on the international map and revolutionized Irish art. In the twenty years of their existence from 1967 to 1988 Irish art shifted from a predominantly pre-Modern to a post-Modern era.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“Diarmuid Lynch, the last man to leave the GPO” by Eileen McGough will tell the story of this man who has been largely forgotten in Ireland’s history.

Diarmuid Lynch was a member of the Supreme Council of the IRB. He was condemned to be shot for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising but USA President Woodrow Wilson intervened personally on his behalf. So Lynch, who was the last man to vacate the burning GPO on Friday 28 April 1916, lived on and spent the rest of his life in Ireland.

“Children and Food Insecurity – a crisis for Ireland’s future” is a lunchtime seminar by Dr Mary Flynn (Visiting Professor, Faculty of Life and Health Sciences, University of Ulster). Her seminar will address affordability of healthy eating in Ireland and issues such as access to healthy food and the impact of homelessness. The event is organised by the Think Tank for Action on Social Change (TASC).

Dr. Ian S. Miller (clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst) will respond to Chloe Dewe Mathew’s exhibition “Shot at Dawn” focusing on the subject of trauma and the emergence of psychoanalytic techniques in response to early manifestations of trauma during World War One. This response will take the form of a gallery-based discussion with students from the MA in Art and Research Collaboration (ARC), Institute of Art, Design & Technology (IADT) and is open to the public to listen /join in.

“Irish trade unions, the Irish Citizen Army and the 1916 Rising” is a talk by Dr. Mary Muldowney.

She will examine the connections between Irish trade unionists and the Irish Citizen Army with particular reference to the 1916 Rising. The immediate impact of the Rising on the trade union movement was so devastating that it led to a retrenchment behind a concentration on industrial relations issues during the struggle for independence and the eventual marginalisation of labour and working class interests in national politics.

“Not just a Rebel: the importance of art, literature and drama to Volunteers during their imprisonment 1916-23” is a talk by Dr. Anne Marie McInerney.

She will discuss the poems, paintings, decorative crosses and knitted crafts that were created by internees during their imprisonment in the aftermath of the Rising. Writing and artwork were important to internees as it was an easy outlet for recreation in the confined environment of a prison camp. The talk will examine the works of both well-known and lesser known internees and discuss how these artworks embodied the humanity of individual prisoners.

“To Speak of Easter Week: Family memories of the Irish Revolution” is a talk by Dr. Helene O’Keeffe.

“Drawing primarily on the oral history testimonies of the descendants of the participants in the 1916 Rising, Dr. Helene O’Keeffe will explore the human legacy of Easter Week. The children and grandchildren of revolutionaries shared inherited stories but the oral histories also provided insight into how memory is transmitted and received and the different ways in which family members have attempted to assimilate and make sense of the actions of their antecedents.”

“Hysteria” is a performance art film that will be screened from Tues 16-Sun 21 February from 20:00 until 08:00 at the Science Gallery. You can watch it from Pearse Street and headphones are available to listen to the atmospheric score that accompanies the film.

It is screened in connection with the curernt Science Gallery exhibition TRAUMA and expresses the trauma that soldiers experienced who came back from fighting in Word War I.

Maurice Keliher is a choreographer, director and actor and he was comissioned to create this film. It features military medical footage, sourced from the Wellcome Library, that was filmed at two English hospitals during World War I. It documents the anguish of some of the patients: symptoms of so-called ‘war neurosis’ suffered by returning soldiers – now referred to as PTSD.

The film is 16 minutes long and will be repeated throughout the nights until the TRAUMA exhibition closes next Sunday.
