Hi all!

A late Dublin Event Guide once again. I explained in one of the Facebook Posts during the week that I already work through the night (without sleep) on Thursday night and Friday night and that it is difficult to find more time, it seems the only solution is to get more bodies involved. That is probably my biggest challenge for 2016. 170 events again this week, but the subscriber numbers are not developing well at the moment, so an extra effort from you would be very much appreciated.

[ad]

Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And secondly: without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good is a quote by Maria Robinson, a lecturer, counsellor, trainer and adviser in early years development. Maria Robinson said

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.

“Today?” you wonder? But it is already mid January, isn’t that too late to start with my New Year’s Resolutions? You found one BIG problem with these resolutions: We think that it has to start on 01 January and if we don’t succeed, then we will have to wait until next year to try again. All nonsense!! You can start making a new ending EVERY single day! Trust yourself and never give up!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week only Kay G. was so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Hmmm, 170 events and I have trouble recommending something as outstanding. There will be lots of interesting 1916 talks this year, but they are not the “Stop the lights” events that I prefer in this section.

If you have not been, go to the Science Gallery exhibition this weekend. The Bank of Secrets today until 16:00 sounds interesting as well. And like every week, there are a good few really interesting gigs as well.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Remembers 1916 – Programme Launched

The “Dublin Remembers 1916” programme was launched on Tuesday, it conists of a series of lectures and talks by historians, exhibitions and conferences in Dublin’s libraries, City Hall, the Hugh Lane Gallery and other venues in the city.

The full programme can be found online here or you can download the PDF brochure here.

Surprisingly, the 64-page thick brochure doesn’t include a single official event on the main day of the Easter Rising (24 April) or on this year’s Easter Monday (the symbolic start day of the Rising) and it also doesn’t include teh events that RTE is planning, which culminate in a big event in Dublin on Easter Monday (28 March) with talks, walking tours, music, dance, street art and more.

Adult Learners’ Festival 2016 – Call to get involved

The 10th Annual Adult Learners’ Festival in 2016 is a nationwide celebration of adult learning, coordinated by AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation.

It will take place from 22-27 February 2016 and AONTAS invites community groups, organisations and local businesses to get involved by hosting free adult learning events during this six day festival.

The Adult Learners’ Festival website at www.adultlearnersfestival.com has lots of resources and event ideas to help you get involved. AONTAS will support the promotion of your event with local and nationwide advertising campaigns.

Could this be the season you will start to write?

Yvonne Cullen is a friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide for many years and for the last 4 years, she has been facilitating weekday and Saturday writing classes in the National Library’s Café Joly. And she has been called “Best creative writing teacher in Dublin”!

Yvonne’s new term of classes at the library starts on 30 January and will be a START TO WRITE course on ten Saturday mornings at 11:00 and a Friday morning course to keep you on course if you are writing from history or research. (To enquire about the fees for these courses or to book, see contact info below).

To introduce you to the approaches she has honed over 23 years facilitating creative writing in Ireland, Yvonne is offering two free Saturday morning classes at the National Library on 16 + 23 January (11:00-13:00). To book or enquire about attending one of these free sessions, email Yvonne directly at yvonnesworkshops@gmail.com. (You can’t book it through the National Library!)

For information on Yvonne’s classes and her writing holidays in the west of Ireland (there are early booking offers available!) visit www.yvonnecullen.wordpress.com. Her creative advice is on Facebook here.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

The Eventbrite Picks will be back next week and in the meantime you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

JMW Turner – The Vaughan Bequest

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

Henry Vaughan, an English collector of art died in 1899 aged 90 and he gave instructions to distribute his art collection among major public museums. The bulk of his Turner watercolours was divided between the National Gallery of Scotland (38) and the National Gallery of Ireland (31) with the condition that they have to be shown every January.

“Graphic Explorations in Print – 32 years of student work from Distillers Press, NCAD” is a showcase of work produced by graphic design students at Distillers Press from 1983 until present day.

Distillers Press, previously known as the graphic print workshop, had its origin at the National College of Art and Design’s original location on Kildare Street. In the 1980s when the Department of Visual Communication moved to the college’s new location on Thomas Street, the facility was expanded.

The Press now has a number of operational letterpress proofing presses and a large collection of metal and wooden type in a wide variety of fonts. It is used by students on a daily basis for creative projects and also as a teaching tool to introduce the fundamentals of typography. Ireland’s first practice-based Masters in the visual arts was undertaken at the Press in 1986; samples of this work can be viewed in the exhibition.

What Are Crits For? – Architectural Education Discussion

16:00 – 19:00, Wed 20 Jan

DIT, Bolton Street, Dublin 1

“What Are Crits For?” intends to dig deeper into the architectural crit (review or jury) which is a cornerstone of architectural education around the world. The architectural crit remains highly controversial: the defence of ideas, drawings and models in an open format before staff and peers is intended to be an occasion of healthy creative debate, but many students view it as hostile confrontation – an ego trip for staff and humiliation for them.

The panel includes John Barton, Director of the Architectural Design Program at Stanford University, Professor Lorraine Farrelly, author, architect and interior designer, Rosie Parnell, author of ‘The Crit: An Architecture Student’s Handbook’ and Jeremy Till, Head of Central Saint Martins, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Arts London and author of ‘Architecture Depends’.

Admission is free, but registration is required via the Eventbrite site here. The event takes place in Room 446 on Level 4.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

This 1916 thing!

So, it is 2016 and all you read and hear in news and newspapers about is 1916. Dublin City, Dun Laoghaire, the libraries, RTE, all newspapers and radio and TV stations are constantly referring to it and if it wasn’t for the speculations about the date for the next general elections, they would probably probably give it even more airtime and print centimetres. …and even the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is filled with (free!) events that make a big story about this year a long long time ago.

So what is this 1916 thing?

If you had hoped you will get through 2016 without having to think about it, I have no good news for you. Actually, my recommendation is that you do read a little about it and maybe go to one or two (or more of the talks) so that you understand what and why people make such a big issue about it.

The event is big in Irish History and if you are not from Ireland, you might be surprised when you find out that it was a total failure and still it is such a big thing 100 years later. It was an attempt to get rid of the British occupiers, but it was badly planned and had no much support in the normal Irish population and after a few days of fighting and a LOT of deaths on both sides, the Irish fighters surrendered.

So we are celebrating this failure in 2016? No, not exactly! We are commemorating! (A small difference.) And the importance of the event comes from what came from it not what it was in 1916. Put in simple terms, you could say that it was the start of what resulted in Ireland’s Independence from Britain. So without the failure in 1916, Ireland possibly would have never (or much later) become a Republic.

The fuzz that is made about 1916 this year might appear to be unproportionally big and you could think that more fuzz should be made about the SUCCESSFUL steps to independence, but when people die for an idea, then this often leads to a certain heroification and that will be a more or less strong component of this year’s commemorations.

By the way: Not everyone agrees fully with that heroification and you might find some talks that look at the role of the leaders of the Rising in a slightly more critical way.

So, inform yourself about this piece of history of the country you live in, so that you can form your own informed opinion about the events this year.

A good starting point for finding out more is via this Google driven tour
