Hi all!

Another milestone for the the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! Today I can tell you that the number of subscribers has grown to 24,000!

Together with more than 60,000 Facebook Likes and 12,000 smart phone app users they are a nice set of numbers. ;-) I am glad that you are part of this big and ever growing community and would like to thank you for continuously spreading the word. But we haven’t reached the ceiling yet, The intermediary goal is to grow the Subscriber number to 30,000, but the real goal for this is 50,000 and with 1.5 mio people in Dublin, I don’t think 50,000 is mad. What do you think? I would love to hear your opinion at dublineventguide@gmail.com

And as always, this edition of the Dublin Event Guide is bringing you again more than 170 free events for the next weekend and following week. Have a super weekend! ;-)

Here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is a quote by Lee Rosen:

Exhausting is okay, It means you are in the game. You’re on the way up and you’re not on the way down.

I have no idea who Lee Rosen is and, to be honest, it doesn’t matter! Smart quotes don’t get smarter if the person that said it is famous. Instead think about it and see if and how it affects you. And if it makes sense to you and is helpful then it doesn’t matter if the milk man, the street sweeper or the smartest person in the universe said it.

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Aislinn T, Barry P, Barbara D, Claire D and Barry M were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend is a little less busy, so no big events, but a good few small ones. If you are interested, this is your last chance to go to a Summer of Heritage event in Dun Laoghaire and that is where I will go on Sunday.

On Saturday the Frontline Emergency Services invite to an Open Day in Trinty College and you could afterwards go to the SECRETS exhibition in the Science Gallery. It is worth a visit.

On Sunday the Pure Vintage Market and if you want to learn more, then the Which Course Expo should be on your list.

And because the weather is meant to be good this weekend, also consider going to the Botanic Gardens where the great “Sculpture in Context” exhibition is on show again.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Boyers Department Store to close

I have to admit that it didn’t shock me when I heard this. I never entered this shop on Talbot Street and I don’t know anyone who did, BUT there is a whole demographic group that would have regularly bought in Boyers and they are not necessarily the customers that would buy their clothes in Zara or any of the shops in Jervis Street Shopping Centre. Even Arnotts is for some too modern.

Well and Arnotts is behind the closure of Boyers. Arnotts was recently bought by a company who also owns Boyers. After the Arnotts management messed up and got too deep into property speculation, Fitzwilliam Finance Partners bought the company and now decided to close the less attractive and probably less profitable one.The closure won’t be immediately, but there will be a long negotiation with Unions and staff and it will then be closed down orderly in January 2016.

The Journal wrote about it here.

(By the way, I have NO specific reason why I never went to Boyers, maybe it is the location. Maybe the shop front? Maybe I was just not introduced to it.)

Rainbow Pedestrian Crossings!? Really?

Two Fine Gael members think that Dublin should get Rainbow coloured pedestrian crossings in George’s Street (near the Dragon and the George) and in Capel Street (near Panti Bar) to “bolster the support for LGBT people across Dublin city and the world”. The will submit an 18 page document to Dublin City explaining their idea.

This must be the daftest idea ever to be submitted to Dublin City! I would hope that people of whatever preference are attracted to Dublin for its openness, friendliness, tolerance and cultural and historic values and NOT because someone spilled some paint on the street. And I can’t believe that two or three rainbows on the city’s street will “bolster support for LGBT people”.

Oh and in the interest of equal rights, do we then have to draw footballs on the street near Lansdowne Road? Crosses near Dublin’s churches? And scissors near all hair salons?

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context – National Botanic Gardens

03 Sept – 16 Oct

National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9

Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

David Claerbout Exhibition

14 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.

Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

www.projectartscentre.ie/event/david-claerbout/

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State

30 Jul – 18 Oct

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.

The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

Dublin Dragon Boat Regatta

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Sep

Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2

The Dragon Boat Regatta is back at Grand Canal Dock for the fifth time and this year there will be 55 teams competing at this 2-day event.

Dragon Boats consist of 16-20 rowers and a drummer and caller/helms person. Races will be over 200 or 400 metres and there will be rowers from Australia, USA, Germany, Italy and UK coming to Dublin. Dublin’s best known team are the Plurabelle Paddlers.

The event is organised by the Irish Dragon Boat Association with support from Waterways Ireland and it would be a great opportunity to get lots of people down to the Grand Canal Square and create some nice festival atmosphere. But unfortunately, the focus is purely on the races. Last year the action on the water was interesting, but there was nothing else on land for children, in between races etc. I’d say a Dragon Boat Festival would be great with water AND land activities!

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Public Demo: Welcome Refugees!

14:00, Sat 12 Sep

Spire, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1

A Public Protest to “Call on the Irish government to take in more refugees” and to welcome refugees will take place at the Spire on Saturday. The refugee crisis has grown to massive proportions and affects all countries in Europe. Germany has pledged to take in approx. 800,000 refugees. Ireland has promised to take about 4000, which is a good increase from the previous figure of 600, but this increase only happened because our politicians realised that thousands of people in Ireland were very unhappy with 600 only.

The original purpose of the protest on Saturday was to ask the government to take in more refugees and more than 16,000 people have joined the online protest here. Possibly the focus will change a little after the announcement by the government on Thursday.

Great Dublin Bike Ride

08:00, Sun 13 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

This is not a free event for participants. The fee for doing the 60km route is EUR 25 and for the 100km route it is EUR 40.

But you might encounter cyclists in the Greater North Dublin area, so I better tell you what is happening.

The Great Dublin Bike Ride is run by the Irish Sports Council together with Cycling Ireland and is suitable for all cyclists from novice to expert. It is not a race, just a leisurely ride, but a minimum speed of 19 km/h is required. Up to 3000 participants are expected.

For everyone who is not participating, you can cheer on the participants if you wish, you can show understanding and tolerance when it upsets your travel plans throughout the city ;-) and you can come to Smithfield Plaza where the start and finish line is and where there is also a small Expo, but seemingly no entertainment,

The routes are outlined here. From Smithfield Plaza, the cyclists will go towards the 3Arena/Point Village and then turn north towards Portmarnock, Swords and for the long route even to Balbriggan.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 13 Sep

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Oktoberfest 2015

12:00, Thu 17 Sep

George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but have we heard of any other events or pubs where you need to buy meal vouchers?

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

Culture Night

17:00, Fri 18 Sep

Dublin (various locations)

One of the best nights is back! Culture Night is a once-a-year event when nearly all cultural venues open their doors for a late night of events and activities. In Dublin more than 250 venues are taking part and countrywide it is 1200 (!!) venues. And the best is that all is free!

With so many events, it is impossible to include them all in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and it wouldn’t even make sense, because there is a good website at culturenight.ie that lists all events and there is also a free app available for Android and iPhone so that you can plan your night.

Nevertheless, I have included the activities from a number of venues here already and I suggest that you watch out on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page because I will put a few recommendations there in a post during the week.

If you like Dublin’s Culture, this is a MUST GO event! It is interesting to see so many different things and to experience them on one night and the atmosphere in the City Centre is just brilliant at Culture Night. Dublin is buzzing with lots of people and everyone is in a positive, curious and playful frame of mind. Experience Dublin at its best!!

Some venues require booking and at other venues the queues will be very very long, so be prepared for that and have some alternative plans. Long queues are always outside Trinity Library (Book of Kells), the Freemason’s Hall and Dublinia.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

The Refugee crisis and “looking after our own”

The main argument of the people in Ireland who are against helping refugees in this pan-European crisis, is that we should help “our own” first. But unfortunately they then fail to define what they mean with “our own”.

Is it the people sleeping rough in our streets? Then we are talking about 105 people in Dublin (by the last count in April according to the Dublin Region Homeless Executive). Or is it the people that are homeless including the ones in emergency accommodation? Then we are talking about 1872 people (according to the same count from April 2015).

We definitely need to help as much as possible and many are of the opinion that more could be done, but should that stop us from helping some of the hundreds of thousands of people that are fleeing their war torn countries? Is help an exclusive thing? Or is it a national thing? Should we only help the people that are by coincidence born in the same country and close our eyes (and doors) to everyone else that is in serious need?

Without a doubt, a large number of immigrants will cause challenges. (More than 800,000 in Germany (this year alone!) has the potential to cause a LOT of problems over the next few years.) And if the bigger countries struggle, then the smaller ones will struggle too. But where is the humanity?

Fair enough, if a person who is talking about “helping our own first” is regularly helping homeless people (not just with the odd Euro, but properly helping!) then they might have a point. Oddly, I’d say the people that do the soup runs and help otherwise “our own” are probably the most sympathetic to the plight of the refugees.
But it seems that the ones that are so worried about “our own” are more among the army of armchair “helpers” that live by the slogan “I would if I could, but I can’t really, so I let others do it and won’t even try.”

We should be and are able to help who are here already AND people that are homeless now and need help! So to all opponents of helping refugees: Think of some better arguments if you must.
