Hi all!
I hope you had a great Culture Night yesterday!
[ad]
Many think it is the best cultural event in Ireland and I would have to agree. Often there is a call for more than one Culture Night per year and I could imagine a second night in Spring, but many organisations put a huge amount of energy in that one evening and if it happened more than once per year, this could be diluted/reduced. So let’s make sure that this event stays with us. (It is in its 10th year already!!!) …and then maybe let’s add other events but not more Culture Nights.
Open House, a completely different, but also great event, is coming up in October where you can visit lots of buildings that are normally not accessible and learn about their architecture. Something else to look forward to! :-)
I really don’t like the begging, but I have to do it again: Nobody helped with a donation last week, so if you can find it in your heart to help the Dublin Event Guide, myself and all the other Dublin Event Guide readers will really appreciate your help!
Here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is something funny and – in a way – beautiful if you like music and nice people:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qqrvm2XDvpQ
It is video clip with American Late Late Show host James Corden doing a Carpool Karaoke with Stevie Wonder. There is no explicit “love life” or “feel good” message in it, but it is just fun. The clip is 11 minutes long, but it is definitely a feel good clip. :-)
It was only put on You Tube on Tuesday and has already been seen by nearly 5mio viewers!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week nobody was so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. That’s not good! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Last week the power outage on Saturday morning that affected 20,000 homes in South Dublin meant that I couldn’t update the Joerg’s Picks before sending the e-mail magazine, but this week they are updated again:
For this weekend I definitely recommend the Canalaphonic Canal Bank Market (Saturday) and the Bluefire Streetfest also on Saturday. The Gorch Fock, the German Navy Sailing Ship is open for a visit on Sunday, the Ranelagh Arts Festival is happening over the whole weekend and don’t forget the current Science Gallery Exhibition “Secret”.

Sunday Soul with Danny G & the Major 7ths aand Pia Dunne & the Eleusians – Ticket Competition
Sun 27 Sept 2015 – 20:00-00:00
Bello Bar, Portobello Harbour, Dublin 8
Two of Dublin’s most soulful groups will be in the Bello Bar for a gig on Sunday 27 Sept. They are “Danny G & the Major 7ths” and “Pia Dunne and the Eleusians”.
Danny G is Daniel Groenland, a singer, flautist, guitarist and composer who was with the great funk band Mob Fandango and still performs with the African-trad fusion outfit Tig Linn and the Discovery Gospel Choir. His band, the Major 7ths, love harmonies and grooves and the 7-10 musicians in a line-up with four of them singing, will bring you the soulful sounds of Neo-Soul artists like D’Angelo and Dilla, as well as the old classics like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield.
Pia Dunne is fronting the Elusians that consist of several backing singers and a lineup of jazzy musicians. Pia is a song writer and an outstanding soul, blues, jazz and folk singer with a smooth and melodic voice that makes you want to listen for hours.
Admission for this gig in the Bello Bar is EUR 8 on the door or EUR 6 on Eventbrite here.
Danny G, a good friend and supporter of the Dublin Event Guide, has made two pairs of tickets available for this gig and if you want to hear some of the best Soul in Dublin, you have to enter this competition: Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with DANNYG in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by Tuesday 22 September at 15:00.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Good news for event organisers! Eventbrite lowers fees in Ireland & free remains free!
There is good news for organisers of non-free events, who need to sell tickets online: Eventbrite, the world’s largest self-service ticketing platform and sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), have announced that they will cut their fees for all tickets and registrations sold in Ireland.
The new fees are effective immediately and are 2% Eventbrite Payment Processing Fee (down from 3.5%), plus 2.5% Eventbrite Service Fee and EUR 0.75 per ticket sold. The total Eventbrite Service Fee is now capped at EUR 9.95 per ticket.
And the even better news:
Eventbrite’s service remains free for free events. The company’s full service is available to organisers of free events for no charge. Organisers only pay fees when they sell paid tickets.
If you are not using Eventbrite yet, check the details and sign up here.

Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

David Claerbout Exhibition
14 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.
Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

Oktoberfest 2015
12:00, Sat 19 Sep
George’s Dock, IFSC, Dublin 1
The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 17 Sept – 04 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.
Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.
The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.
Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but have we heard of any other events or pubs where you need to buy meal vouchers?
I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 19 Sep
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.
Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.
I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.
From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

The 96th Dublin City Liffey Swim, a swimming competition with a long history, takes place this Saturday.

Mateada Colectiva em Dublin – Drink Mate in Dublin
11:00 – 18:00, Sun 20 Sep
Bandstand, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
Mate is the caffeine-rich South American tea-like drink that is consumed through a silver “straw” from a calabash gourd and – as far as I understand – a “mateada colectiva” is a Mass-Mate-Drinking session. It is a meeting of South American Mate drinkers in Stephen’s Green and everybody is welcome. However, you need to bring your Mate and all implements yourself.
I think the Mate drinking is just an “excuse/justification” for the South Americans in Dublin to meet-up on a Sunday afternoon, so don’t worry too much if you just want to meet nice people and Mate is not your thing. ;-)
Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 20 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Oktoberfest 2015
12:00, Mon 21 Sep
Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

James Franklin Fuller – architect or genealogist? – Lecture
13:15 – 14:00, Tue 22 Sep
Irish Architectural Archives, 45 Merrion Square, Dublin 2
James Franklin Fuller (1835-1924) was an outstanding architect. He was responsible for some of Ireland’s best-known buildings – Kylemore Abbey, Ashford Castle, Parknasilla and Farmleigh are all his, but while many Irish people would recognise one or more of these, very few indeed could name their architect.
To mark the 180th anniversary of his birth, the Irish Architectural Archive are showing an exhibition and will host a lecture about the life and legacy of this prominent Irish Architect.
The lecture is on 22 Sept. Admission is free and no booking required, but places are limited.
The exhibition will be on show from 11 Sept-31 Oct. Admission is free as well.

Oktoberfest 2015
12:00, Thu 24 Sep
Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd meal voucher system kicks in: You will have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. What’s in a name? Eircom rebranding nonsense
On Wednesday it was announced that telecommunications company Eircom will be rebranded with the new name….wait for it …. Eir. Yes, you read that right, the whole name change is the dropping of the “com” which stood for “communications”.maybe Eircom wants to express that communications is not that relevant to them anymore. Maybe they were afraid that people wouldn’t recognise them anymore if they called themselves something completely different.
UPC wasn’t too worried about that and will rename to “Virgin Media” and when you read that Eircom is the fifth least popular brand in Ireland (after Irish Water, Bank of Ireland, AIB and Ladbrokes) then you would expect even more that the new Eircom would try to distance itself from the old Eircom.
After 15 years of Eircom, some sprucing up is not necessarily a bad thing, but what Eircom’s branding company suggested (allegedly it was “Moving Brands” in London) and what Eircom management signed off is a ridiculous name and a similarly amateurish logo.
I was looking for a logo recently for a website I am putting together and found a brilliant Indian company on fiverr.com who created a perfect logo for me for $5. Do you think Eircom paid a little more than that? But the logo is not even worth half of it. It has been reported that the complete renaming will cost 16 mio!! Crazy!
Ohh and how much do you think will the new name change the seriously bad reputation that Eircom has? It won’t change it in the slightest. Eircom inherited the bad reputation from Telecom Eireann and Eir will inherit it from Eircom.
You might wonder why I called the company continuously Eircom in this article? Well, it might surprise you, but interestingly the company will continue to be called Eircom Limited. The only thing that is changing is that they registered the trading name “Eir”. So strictly speaking it will be Eircom Limited trading as Eir. Consequently you can continue calling them Eircom, because that is actually the registered company name.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
