Dublin Event Guide 427: Ukulele Hooley, Heritage Week, People’s Art Exhibition

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

Heritage Week runs from Sat 22 – Sun 30 Aug and there are well over 300 events listed on www.heritageweek.ie. A very small selection are in this edition of the Dublin Event Guide, there are just tooo many to include them all. So my suggestion is that you go to the Heritate Week website and spend a few minutes going through the What’s On list. In the Dublin News section I mentioned a few highlights, maybe check them out as well.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July and is now completed. The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture. The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

From 25 July until 29 August, Marsh’s Library is waiving their admission charges from 10:00-12:00 on Saturdays.

(After 12:00 kids still get in for free, and adults pay just EUR 3.)

Follow the new children’s trail through the ancient Marsh’s Library. There are 500 year-old squashed spider, big vats of ancient urine, the ghost of a long dead Archbishop and a headless Egyptian mummy. And you will find out what they have in common. The trail is accompanied by an illustrated comic, ‘Scary (and Hairy!) Tales from Marsh’s Library’.

And the library claims “We are the only library in the world which never tells children to ‘sssh’, and there is no such thing as a bored child at Marsh’s.”

Part of St. Patrick Cathedral’s extensive Heritage Week Programme are Belfry Tours on Saturday 22 + 29 August at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00.

Come and visit the Bell Ringing Room in the tower of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. Each tour will last about 45 minutes and will give a brief history of the tower, followed by a demonstration on six bells.

Admission is free, but booking is required via the Education Department on 01-4539472 (Places are limited to 15 per tour and participants must be over 12 years of age and be physically fit.)

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

Bring your kids to this event where they will explore the weird and wonderful diversity of insects and mini beasts living in and around the pond at the Botanic Gardens. The workshop is suitable for Age 8+.

Every Saturday (until 28 August) the Yoga Hub will run an Outdoor Yoga Class in St. Stephen’s Green near the bandstand.

Each class is donation based and the money you donate (each and every Euro!) will go directly to a different charity every week.

Five times this year the “People’s Art 2015″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of art works. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The market has now grown to 40 stalls offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The exhibition “Father Browne A Life through the Lens” is on show in dlr LexIcon, the Library and Cultural Centre in Dun Laoghaire, from 10 Aug – 17 Oct.

Fr Browne observed twentieth-century Ireland. His life as a Jesuit priest; his experience as a passenger on the first leg of the voyage of the Titanic in 1912; his service as a chaplain in the first World War and his later travels throughout Europe, Egypt, and Australia.

On Sat 22 Aug, 05+19 Sept and 02 Oct, a guided tour of the exhibition will take place. Admission is free and no booking required.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Military Guard CeremonyThe National Monument

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 18 July to 22 August 2015.

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Every week different units will be involved and the ceremony and the participating units are described on the website below.

The Nigerian Carnival Festival takes place in the Axis Centre in Ballymun from Mon 17 – Sun 23 August. There were events every day and the final free event is a Grand Carnival Finale on the plaza in front of Axis in Ballymun.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Wooly Ward’s Farm will come to the weekly Marlay Park County Council Market on Sat+Sun 22/23 August.

Kids of all ages (until at least 99 years of age!) love holding and petting cute animals and Wooly Ward’s has lots of them. Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Rabbits, Chicken a Llama and more are available to be held and admired.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). “These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This extra Saturday talk is entitled: “Our Polinators of Ireland and Farmleigh”

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

The sixth “Ukulele Hooley by the Sea” will take place this weekend in Dun Laoghaire. Many of us (me included) have a Ukulele at home, but they don’t use it often enough. Now you have a chance to get some inspiration or just enjoy listening to this quirky instrument.

The main public event with Ukulele gigs from 12:00-18:30 will be on Sunday in People’s Park. Admission is free and the full line-up is here.

But already on Saturday evening an outdoors Ukulele Hooley Open Mic event will take place at the Pavilion Quarter in Dun Laoghaire near the seafront (actually near the entrance to the Harbour Car Park). The Dublin City Rounders will play a gig in Sweeney’s. Roots, Americana, Rockabilly, Western Swing and Folk are their genres. Admission is free.

Nearly 1000 participants will take part in the Dublin City Triathlon this year. It will take place on Sunday in the Phoenix Park Area. After a swim in the Liffey of 1.5 km, the athletes will complete a 40km bike ride, followed by a 10km run. (For “Super Sprint” distance athletes the distances are 500m swim, 16km bike, 4km run.)

The first wave of swimmers will start at 08:15. The swim is in the Liffey at Island bridge and both cycle and run will be in Phoenix Park. There is no other entertainment for spectators, but the great thing about this Triathlon is that the Olympic Distance athletes will do 5 rounds on the 8km cycling course and 3 Laps of the running course, so you see them passing by a good few times.

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This week’s talk is entitled: “Butterflies of Ireland and Farmleigh”

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

An afternoon of traditional music, celebrating the Uilleann Pipes, will take place in the Seamus Ennis Centre.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

The 85th Dun Laoghaire Harbour Swim takes place this Sunday. The Men’s race starts at 16:30 and the Women’s race starts at 17:30. The route is very audience friendly.

Start and finish is at the RNLI slip way directly next to the East Pier and the course will then go the East Pier Lighthouse and then back. The complete swim distance is 2200m.

Your support for the swimmers is appreciated (and required).

Every Sunday (except at Bank Holiday weekends), the Ragtime, Roots and Country Blues Band “Cool Hand Dukes” play in the Porterhouse near Grafton Street.

The Dublin Blues Cartel will be in Whelan’s again and will perform mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Admission is free.

A very small selection are in this edition of the Dublin Event Guide, there are just tooo many to include them all. The yearly Sand Scultpures exhibition will be in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle again.

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July and is now completed. The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture. The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

“Dublin City and the Wide Street Commissioners” is a guided tour with Dr. John Montague and Dr. Charles Duggan. It will focus on the work of the Wide Street Commissioners in shaping the buildings and streets of Dublin City.

At this Heritage Week event, Gretta Halpin (Education Officer at the National Print Museum) talks about Letterpress Printing Heritage.

Gretta will give an introduction to the National Print Museum: how their work involves preserving Ireland’s Letterpress Printing Heritage for further generations. This will be followed by an interactive demonstration of letterpress printing using the museum’s Outreach Pop-up Print Shop.

“General John Maxwell and the 1916 Rising” is the title of this call by historian Ronan Stewart.

General John Maxwell arrived in Ireland on Friday 28 April 1916 as “military governor” with “plenary powers” under Martial law. Ronan Stewart will talk about General John Maxwell’s career and his fateful role in the execution of the 1916 Rising leaders.

This is a Drop-in activity for Ages 6+.

Think like an archaeologist for an afternoon and try to solve the puzzle of some mystery objects during this drop-in session. Located next to the Treasury exhibition, ground floor.

The Temple Bar “Night” Market is more an afternoon and evening market (15:00-20:00) and it takes place every Wednesday and has now been extended until 16 September.

You can buy Arts & Crafts at this market. In previous years the missing food and drink stalls (probably to protect the pubs and restaurants in Temple Bar) was mentioned by visitors as a critique.

“William Spence – A Victorian Engineer in the Right Place at the Right Time” is a talk by historian Cathy Scuffil.

She will talk about the fascinating story of one of Victorian Dublin’s biggest industrialists – an engineer and philanthropist who helped to shape The Liberties in its 19th century heyday.

The Cork Street Foundry and Engineering Works of William Spence and Son was established in Dublin in 1856 and continued trading over two generations of the Spence family until 1930. Among its achievements were the church bells in some of the city’s best-known churches, the famous telescope at Birr Castle and The Liberties own mini-railway, which transported goods and men across the sprawling St James Gate Brewery.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

As part of Artist Screen Series Finnish Artist and HIAP Residency recipient Hanna Husberg will present ‘The Free Sea’, a film by Hanna and Laura McLean. Hanna will also discuss her recent work and practice, followed by a short questions and answers session.

‘The Free Sea’ explores the Maldives as a state constituted and unbound by the cultural, political, economic, and material flows of late capitalism and anthropogenic climate change.

During Heritage Week 2015, the talk “Working Life in Finglas; Shared Stories and Memories” will look at Finglas’s industrial past.

James’s Street and Thomas Street form part of the ancient western road into Dublin, An Slígh Mór. These streets are also among the city’s oldest thoroughfares and have been the commercial heart of The Liberties for centuries.

Recent archaeological discoveries unearthed as part of streetworks in 2014 have brought to light a fascinating hidden history to the street. From the remains of a late medieval gate, to 17th century city defences, to artefacts from a possible tilery off Crocker’s Lane, and even human remains near St. Catherine’s Church, this walk will offer you a window to past life of these streets.

Archaeologist Antoine Giacometti takes you along the route to tell you about some of the treasures uncovered in the 2014 dig.

“Art Al Fresco” is a morning ramble around Museum of Modern Art’s beautiful Formal Garden. With a focus on the interrelationship of nature, architecture and art you will be exploring the Garden’s sculptures and you can do some outdoor art-making.

As part of Heritage Week William Cumming will talk about “An Introduction to the Architectural Heritage of Dublin North City”.

From a small town of less than 10,000 inhabitants, Dublin expanded hugely from 1610, date of the first map of the city, to 1800 by when it was the sixth largest city in Europe. This talk will focus on the north side of the city, where much of the development took place on the former lands of St Mary’s Abbey.

“Birds of Dublin Bay Biosphere” is a talk by Richard Nairn (writer and ecologist).

The talk will focus on the bird life to be seen in all parts of Dublin Bay throughout the year, from Brent Geese and waders, like Oystercatchers, in winter to the breeding terns in summer. The talk discusses the ecology of these birds, their migration and the conservation measures needed to ensure that Dublin Bay remains of international importance for birds.

In August and September a series of talks introducing a broad range of topics in Irish family history will take place in the National Library every Tuesdays and Thursdays from 13:00-14:00. Booking is not required and admission is free.

The topic is “Archives to be explored at the National Irish Visual Arts Library” with speaker Eve Parnell (NCAD).

Lily and Lolly is a new work of theatre that looks at the life of poet W.B. Yeats through the eyes of his sisters Lily and Lolly Yeats. Set in their Dublin printing company Cuala Press, it explores the poetry and plays they publish for their brother Willie. Through storytelling, poetry and song, Lily and Lolly opens up the relationships within this incredibly artistic family, with their brother the artist Jack B.Yeats and their father, the portrait artist John B. Yeats. Lilly and Lolly and their all-female printing company, find themselves at the forefront of the Irish Literary Revival surrounded by the characters so important in the life of W.B.Yeats including Maud Gonne, Lady Gregory, James Joyce, AE, Sean O’Casey and John Millington Synge.

Art historian Nicola Gordon Bowe (NCAD) will be in St. Ann’s Chruch for a talk about Irish stained glass artist Wilhelmina Geddes, focusing on the windows by her in St Ann’s Church. This is a Heritage Week event.

“Get Behind the Scenes at the Museum: Tour of the Conservation Studios” is a great opportunity to see the work behind the scenes at the Museum and meet Museum conservators and look at some of their current conservation projects.

The National Print Museum is running a “Night at the National Print Museum” with tours at 18:00, 18:30, 19:00 and 19:30.

Immerse yourself in an evening of the sights, sounds and stories of the traditional printing industry. Through a guided tour, witness a museum come to life as retired printers demonstrate the collection. A Reminiscence hour (from 20:00-21:00) will follow, where you can share and hear tales from printing days gone by.

As part of Heritage Week 2015, local Historian Peter Clarke will give an illustrated talk covering 225 years of the history of the Royal Canal.

From its origins in 1789 through all its phases to the present day, Peter will discuss some of the major figures associated with the development of the canal and how the economic and social history of certain areas of the city were shaped by the canal’s fluctuating fortunes.

Take a guided Heritage Week tour of this historic building at the heart of medieval Dublin. View the hidden Portlester Chapel, a medieval laneway and the effigial cenotaph of Lord Portlester and his wife.

Ireland is home to nine species of bat, an important mammal that consumes large quantities of insects each night. They are nocturnal hunters and rely on high-pitch ultrasonic noises to fly around in the dark. Join Bat Conservation Ireland on a bat walk and enter the mysterious world of bats. The walk will be lead by Tina Aughney.
