Hi all!

This is probably the BIGGEST Dublin Event Guide ever.

[ad]

Today I included a lot more Heritage Week events than normally and there are a massive amount of well over 300 in Greater Dublin alone. No, I didn’t include all, just a tiny amount, but it still brought the amount of events in this edition to well over 220. Dublin is busy!! :-)

And remember that the smart phone version of the Dublin Event Guide is at m.dublineventguide.com so that you can easily check what else is happening when you are out and about. ;-)

Only one person donated last week and it’s not critical yet, but I just wanted to mention it in case you always thought that you would like to help with a donation but never got around to it. And in case you wonder: The donations are NOT for me!! I do all the work on the Dublin Event Guide for free. All donations are put into the Dublin Event Guide to cover the cost and to save a small bit of money to eventuallly make some futher improvements. Thanks for your help!

And in my regular weekly appeal I explain it a little different; These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.

—-

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is vide clip of a 6 year old boy who lost BOTH of his parents and he is sooo inspirational!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Avril C was the only wonderful person that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend I have to mention the Ukulele Hooley on Sunday (despite the non-promising weather forecast) and then there is Heritage Week with more than 300 events in Greater Dublin. Also the People’s Art exhibition at Stephen’s Green takes place again and the Bernard Shaw Flea Market.

Next Saturday an Open Day is happening at Merrion Square. Check the Upcoming Events section for some details, you might have to pre-book some of the tours!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Heritage Week from 22-30 August

This week is Heritage Week from Saturday until next Sunday and in the Greater Dublin area there are more than 300 events taking place with many of them taking place a number of times during the week. You can imagine that that is much more than could be squeezed in the Dublin Event Guide. For that reason, only a few events (e.g. from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and from the Print Museum and the National Museum) did make it in this edition, the other events you would have to check on the HeritageWeek website at www.heritageweek.ie/whats-on The libraries in Dublin also have a list of events and they can be found here.

Are there some event highlights? Yes! Free tours and concert in St. Patrick’s Cathedral (they are mentioned in this edition of the Dublin Event Guide), Guided tours of the Freemason’s Hall (here), Guided tours in Dublinia (here), Guided tours at the Casino in Marino (here) and lots of events in the National Gallery, the National Print Museum, City Hall and lots more.

The vast majority of events is free.

Bewley’s Hotels are gone!

You might have read it before, but it seems that it happened last week. All Bewley’s Hotels are now gone … and have been renamed to “Clayton Hotel”

With the Four Seasons now being the InterContinental, the Burlington is a “Doubletree by Hilton”, the Jury’s Inn is the D4 Hotel, the Bewley’s Hotels are Clayton …. and that is just about half of the name changes … you really have to be on your toes to keep up with all the new identities.

Christmas has begun!!!

On 20 August 2015, the first sightings of decorated Christmas Trees in Dublin have been reported, when people posted pictures of Christmas trees from Brown Thomas’ Christmas department which will try to sell Christmas goods now for the next FOUR months!! You would think that there are other goods in the world that Brown Thomas could try to flog to their customers and that have a higher probabilty of being sold now than Christmas decoration.

Maybe we should go to that department and if anyone goes in there and picks up goods to bring to the till, a choir of people should turn to them and ask “SERIOUSLY!?!?!?” No other comment! Would that be enough to wake any misguided Christmas shopper up in August?? ;-)

RTE1 Quiz with Nick Byrne – Audience Tickets available

Would you like to be in the audience for the very first recording of “Four Heads” a brand new RTE 1 quiz hosted by Nyicky Byrne and from the creators of “The Chase”?

Four Heads takes two celebrity led teams and forces them to think in sync and handing victory to their opponents. There will be fun gameplay, banter and lots of laughs.

If you want to get audience tickets for the recording on Monday 31 Aug from 18:30-22:00 in RTE, you have to send a mail with your full name, mobile number, number of tickets required and mention also that you saw this in the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your mail has to go to audience@wakatv.ie

Please only apply for tickets if you are definitely available on 31 August from 18:30.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State

30 Jul – 18 Oct

Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8

“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.

The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

www.imma.ie/en/page_237015.htm

David Claerbout Exhibition

14-22 Aug (11:00-18:00) / 24 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.

Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

www.projectartscentre.ie/event/david-claerbout/

Approaching the Landscape

01-29 Aug (10:00-18:00)

Rua Red, South Dublin Arts Centre, Tallaght, Dublin 24

Approaching the Landscape features Niall De Buitlear, Margaret Corcoran, Lili Heller, Jason Deans and Conor Mary Foy. It brings together art works and artists who respond to our surrounding environment. Each artwork presented in this exhibition interprets a specific terrain or perspective which reflects how we as people negotiate our personal territories.

Modern Wife, Modern Life

July + August

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4

Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the ‘ideal wife’ turned ‘modern wife’ in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women’s magazines.

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an ‘ideal wife’ became closely bound up with being a ‘modern wife’. This is best identified in the pages of women’s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.

Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 and Sat-Sun 14:00-17:00. Closed on the bank holidays weekend.

Heritage Week

09:00, Sat 22 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

Heritage Week runs from Sat 22 – Sun 30 Aug and there are well over 300 events listed on www.heritageweek.ie. A very small selection are in this edition of the Dublin Event Guide, there are just tooo many to include them all. So my suggestion is that you go to the Heritate Week website and spend a few minutes going through the What’s On list. In the Dublin News section I mentioned a few highlights, maybe check them out as well.

Sand Sculptures – Dublin Castle

10:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Aug

“Emotional States” is the theme this year and the carving started on 27 July and is now completed. The artists are from Fleeting Sculpture. The exhibition will run until 25 August and admission is free.

People ask usually how the sand withstands the rain and want to know if something is mixed in, but it is just normal sand with no added stuff. Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Aug

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks

14:00, Sat 22 Aug

Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This extra Saturday talk is entitled: “Our Polinators of Ireland and Farmleigh”

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

Admission is free and will be distributed on a first come first served basis at the guides reception desk of Farmleigh. For further information contact farmleightours@gmail.com or call 01 815 5914.

Once the carving is finished the “skin” will be sprayed with something to make it a little harder, but the holding together of the sculpture is purely down to the compacting of the sand.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 23 Aug

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This week’s talk is entitled: “Butterflies of Ireland and Farmleigh”

Among its achievements were the church bells in some of the city’s best-known churches, the famous telescope at Birr Castle and The Liberties own mini-railway, which transported goods and men across the sprawling St James Gate Brewery.

Archaeological Discoveries on James Street and Thomas Street – Tour

11:00 – 12:30, Thu 27 Aug

James Street, Dublin 8

James’s Street and Thomas Street form part of the ancient western road into Dublin, An Slígh Mór. These streets are also among the city’s oldest thoroughfares and have been the commercial heart of The Liberties for centuries.

Recent archaeological discoveries unearthed as part of streetworks in 2014 have brought to light a fascinating hidden history to the street. From the remains of a late medieval gate, to 17th century city defences, to artefacts from a possible tilery off Crocker’s Lane, and even human remains near St. Catherine’s Church, this walk will offer you a window to past life of these streets.

Archaeologist Antoine Giacometti takes you along the route to tell you about some of the treasures uncovered in the 2014 dig.

Book your free ticket here. Meet at the Obelisk Foutnain on James Street.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Pedestrianisation the wrong way and how Dublin City rigs surveys!

Dublin City asked us to help with some opinions about a Transport Study that suggests to dramatically change the City Centre traffic flow. The goal is to keep cars far away from the City Centre and to make the City more pedestrian friendly. To achieve that, parts of the Liffey Quays will be closed for traffic it the suggestions in the Study will be put in reality. In addition, big changes will happen to College Green, Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street. I would like to say that they will pedestrianised, but that would be a lie because there are some odd things happening.

I drive a car and therefore have concerns when another one of the few Liffey crossings will be closed and the plan is to effectively close O’Connell Bridge, BUT I also cycle and I walk (and I use an Electric Unicycle…the coolest vehicle ever :-) ). So because of that, I am relatively open to positive changes. But if you read the study in detail you will see that we are not really told the full story.

Most of us think that pedestrianisation is good, but how would you feel if in peak hours Taxi drivers or buses are still allowed to drive through a pedestrianised area. Doesn’t make sense, right? The idea of pedestrianising an area is that walking people will NOT have to worry about non walking parties. That’s the reason why we don’t even allow a very slow bicycle to cycle through Grafton Street, But Dublin City doesn’t want to give you that. Noo, they say that Taxis and buses still need to drive through College Green. That doesn’t sound cool. And would it not makes sense then to at least let bicycles also use the area where buses and taxis are still allowed to endanger pedestrians?

I think it should be an ALL or nothing! I am in favour of pedestrianisation but only if that keeps all non-walking “traffic” out.

Dublin City then gave us an opportunity to submit our opinion about this study, well at least that’s what the claimed, but if you did reply then there was not a single question about the actual plans of closing parts of the quays, or only partially pedestrianising College Green instead the consultation questionnaire was rigged by asking questions that most would answer in a way Dublin City wants it.

Here are a few of the questions:

Do you think that reducing ‘through traffic’ will improve the amenity value of Dublin’s city centre?
Do you support the principle of giving commuters more transport choices when they decide to come to Dublin City Centre?
Are you in favour of high quality pedestrian facilities in the city centre?
Are you in favour of high quality cycle facilities in the city centre?

There were 10 questions all together. Not one really explained or asked about any details. There was no question that said “Do you think that closing the South Quays and the North Quays for traffic is the appropriate way to reduce traffic in the City Centre?” Instead only wishy washy questions like the four listed above were asked. Would anybody say NO to them? I doubt it.

Dublin City you rigged the questionnaire to get the answers that you wanted to get! I am disappointed!
