A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The “Story of the Capital” exhibition in the basement museum of Dublin City Hall is taking part in Heritage Week and is waiving the admission charges today.

On Saturday, the Great Pink Run, a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Ireland, will take place. It is a 10km run (at 10:00) and a 5km run at 10:40 with start and finish in the Chesterfield Avenue/Furze Road area of Phoenix Park.

Registration is closed (and was not free), but you can support the participants for free by cheering them on.

To celebrate Heritage Week 2015, the National Gallery will host a special behind the scenes look at the archive collections of Jack B. Yeats and the Yeats family. Rarely seen collections will be on display and staff will discuss and explain them to you.

There will also be free tours of the current archive exhibition at 11:00 and 15:00, led by members of the Gallery’s Library and Archive team.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The ESB Georgian House Museum is a beautiful example of a Georgian House in Dublin of 1790. The museum normally has a EUR 6 admission charge, but for the Merrion Square Open Day, admission is free. If you have never been there, I strongly recommend it.

Harpist and singer Máiread Whelan will play in the elegant Drawing Room of the museum from 14:00-16:00, so that you can experience traditional Harp Music in Georgian surroundings.

“Our Flying Heritage: Irish Aviation History” is a talk by Maurice Byrne, Joe Maxwell and Guy Warner about Ireland’s aviation heritage.

Ratha Yatra is an annual parade festival that dates back thousands of years to ancient India. It is a celebration of the “International Society for Krishna Consciousness” and features a wooden chariot pulled by hand accompanied by singing, dancing, drums, cymbals. It culminates in an afternoon of music, drama and dance exhibits that even includes a vegetarian feast.

The event starts at Parnell Square at 10:30. The parade then leaves at 11:30 to go to the bandstand in St. Stephen’s Green and at 13:30 the celebrations will start there.

Every Saturday at 11:00 until 29 August an Open Air Pilates class, followed by a Coaching session with a Life Coach takes place in Blanchardstown. Organised by Pace Pilates and supported by Fingal County Council. Find all details on the Facebook page below. Admission is free.

Every Saturday (until 12 Sept) the Yoga Hub will run an Outdoor Yoga Class in St. Stephen’s Green near the bandstand.

Each class is donation based and the money you donate (each and every Euro!) will go directly to a different charity every week.

People’s Photography is a massive open air photo exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. More than 200 photographers will exhibit and sell their photos. Admission is free.

The event is similar to the People’s Art Exhibition that takes place on the rails of St Stephen’s Green 4-5 times a year. But the big difference is that you have only ONE single chance to see this exhibition and that obviously paintings are replaced with photos.

A great event strongly recommended!

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The market has now grown to 40 stalls offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

At this Family Comedy Weekend at Farmleigh House, there will be comedy for kids in Stand-up Comedy shows, Comedy Workshops for Children, SIlly Storytelling, Joke writing, Poetry and Magic.

The Dalkey Lobster Festival takes place this week on Saturday and Sunday with lots of music, cooking demonstrations, Kids Zone and Magic Show.

The Magic Show is from 15:00-16:00 on Sat and Sunday in the Dalkey Parish Garden.
The Kids Zone with Bouncy Castles and Performances is in the Supervalu car park from 13:00-18:00 on Sat+Sun.
A giant Lobster Show in in the Tramyard from 14:00-14:30 on Saturday.
Cooking Demonstrations take place throughout the day on Sat+Sun.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Heritage Week comes with lots of free events and this one does normally cost money, but is free during Heritage Week only.

Every day from Monday until Saturday at 12:00 a free guided tour will take place in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. When you come to the till you have to mention that you are here for the free Heritage Week Tour to get in without a charge.

Qigong is a traditional Chinese form of meditation coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm state of mind.

Marlay House in Marlay Park is the venue for two Jazz Concerts to celebrate Heritage Week.

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This week’s talk is entitled: “Wildlife of Ireland and Farmleigh”

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Ath the Heritage Week Tour “Highlights of the Decorative Arts Galleries”, you will see Irish silver, ceramics, glass and scientific instruments and explore some of Ireland’s rich heritage in design and manufacturing.

Join Museum Educator Eimir O’Brien in a tour that will uncover some highlights of the Decorative Arts galleries at Collins Barracks.

Admission is free and places are allocated on a first-come basis 15 minutes before tour starts.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Discover some of the amazing native and non-native trees growing in the Gardens and find out interesting facts about trees (from biodiversity to folklore to economic). The walk will be suitable for the whole family.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

“Dun Laoghaire Intertidal Ecology” is a biodiversity event organised by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown.

“The Shoreline in Dún Laoghaire is a combination of rocky shore, sandy beach and harbour, which all have their own assemblage of inhabitants. There’s a nice selection of seaweeds, molluscs, crustaceans, polychaetes and birds, so lots to see! This is an easy walk but bringing raingear and wellies is advisable.”

“This talk will explore the numerous ‘little wars’ that pockmarked the years from 1547-1603 in Ireland. Highlighting the role of martial law in the conduct of English military policy, it will reveal how government intervention tended to exacerbate existing political tensions as much as it settled them, with often bloody consequences. It will also draw attention to the composition of crown forces.”

On Tuesday the new Navy ship “LE James Joyce” will be commissioned in Dun Laoghaire by Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Defence Simon Coveney.

The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month in J.W. Sweetman’s. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 711 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together.

Hear eco-activist Deirdre Lane of ShamrockSpring talk about climate change matters in Ireland and Europe. Deirdre will also talk about climate activism and how best to work together to urge politicians to take the concerns on board. And she will talk about the importance of divesting from fossil fuels and how to do so.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of William Rowan Hamilton’s Death, the event “A Tale of Hamilton and 12 Sonnets” will take place. Join poet Iggy McGovern (Fellow Emeritus in Physics, Trinity College Dublin) & Friends for a staged reading of 12 sonnets in the voices of academicians, poets and mathematicians.

William Rowan Hamilton, Royal Astronomer, Director of Dunsink Observatory, and President of the Royal Irish Academy, discovered Quaternion Operators at Broom Bridge while walking to the Academy from Dunsink on 16 October 1843. He died on 02 September 1865.

“The Medical World of Early Modern Ireland: 1500-1750” is a 2-day conference on Thursday and Friday that is organised by the Centre for Medical History of the University of Exeter.

This conference is bringing together scholars working on the history of medicine in Ireland in the period 1500-1750 and will allow them to present the findings of latest research. More details about the conference, the topics and speakers are available via the website below.

Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition and it is a brilliant exhibition in the beautiful surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens, Some of Ireland’s best artists are showing new work and the sculptures are displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the in the gallery in the Visitors Centre.

On Saturdays you will have the opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour through the exhibits.

“The legend of the Wild Geese now sits prominently in our cultural memory – the established narrative being of the gallantry and strength of the Irishmen exiled to European armies, forever holding out hope for redemption and return to Ireland. All the strongest legends have some basis in reality and initially any romanticizers of these exiles would have had a hard time finding evidence for their claims. In the War of the Grand Alliance (1688 – 97), the Wild Geese suffered heavily from battle and disease but were largely unappreciated in France and unnoticed at home. It is only during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 – 14) that the mythologizing surrounding this community really comes into its own. “

Flanagan’s are opening a new live music venue this week and it is a piano bar that will have live jazz every Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Tania Notaro will perform.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live. followed by DJs until late. Admission is free.

The Dublin City Rounders are performing their mix of Old Timey, Western Swing, Blues, Folk, Rockabilly, Vaudville. Admission is free.

Bad Boy Jake are playing R&B, Rock and Blues in the Patriot Inn. Admission is free.
