Hi all!

Here we are again! Another week over and in a few days two thirds of 2015 is already behind us. Is it a good year? Yes, regarding events it is a good year. There are a few big events gone, but there are lots more smaller ones it seems.

[ad]

The great thing about Ireland is that many museums are free and that these museums have resources and great people to run lots of other free events as well. On Saturday the National Museum in Kildare Street is celebrating its 125th anniversary with lots of events! Dublin’s libraries and the pubs with free gigs are equally important.

If you go to free events, please show your support and thank the organisers is possible. We are lucky to have so many enthusiastic people running events!

And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

—-

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Jordan Belfort, the real Wolf of Wall Street will be in Dublin in September and tickets for Early Bird prices are available right now. Click on the banner for more information.

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is one of these video clips that make you feel good because they make you laugh. It is the simplest type, but it often works! ;-) Well, I laughed and I hope so will you. It is a clip from the “8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown” and in it comedian Joe Lycett tells his story about a parking fine:

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Judy F, Jane O’H, Eamonn U, Gerard P, Fiona F were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend sees the last two days of the Heritage Week and there are still lots of events. The Merrion Square Open Day on Saturday is definitely worth a visit. The People’s Photo Exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green is a must and you will also find me at the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday.

If you have children, consider the Family Comedy Festival at Farmleigh House and then there is also the Dalkey Lobster Festival. Busy weekend!! :-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Heritage Week from 22-30 August – Last two days!

The last two days of Heritage Week is not a fizzling out, but it is a full on, busy programme. Some events are included in this Dublin Event Guide, but there are soooo many that I couldn’t include all, so please check on the HeritageWeek website at www.heritageweek.ie/whats-on

Unfortunately, though, the website seems to have some intermittent problems. I had difficulties reaching it.

I found a way!! As long as the website is down, you can reach the Dublin City events list here: www.heritageweek.ie/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/hw-dublin-dublincity.pdf

BlueFire StreetFest 2015 – Fund It Campaign

BlueFire Street Fest on Smithfield Square, Dublin 7 is planned for Sat 19 Sept and will see an array of international and local performers and artists from the Dublin arts scene entertaining you. There will be world music on the main stage, a graffiti art jam, street performers, buskers, a market fair, drumming workshops and salsa beats, inspirational talks and a children’s area for the kids.

But running such a festival is not cheap! The BlueFire team have raised most of the money from Dublin City, Jameson and VisitDublin, but they still need to fill a gap and for that reason have launched a fundraising campaign in Fund It.

Have a look at www.fundit.ie/project/bluefire-street-fest-2015 and if you can help, the Fund It project partners will match your contribution, so that BlueFire will have double the funds available.

Uber in Dublin losing its appeal?

Uber Ireland has announced that from 01 Sept, they will no longer offer UberX services in Dublin, but instead will now offer UberTAXI services. The name change doesn’t matter to most, it was always a Taxi service where Uber was just the online booking engine that replaced the “radio company” through which you booked a taxi in olden times. ;-)

The big change, however, is that the 10% discount on fares that was given since around December 2014 does NOT apply to UberTAXI anymore, so now there is no differntiator anymore between Uber, Hailo and all the other online bookable Taxi services that will arrive in Ireland. Will Uber be happy to be just another Taxi Service? Or is this the beginning of the end for Uber in Ireland?

If you want to try them out while they are still here, sign up here and get a EUR 10 trip for free (only works if you are a new user). Use it this weekend, who knows if that special offer is also withdrawn from 01 Sept!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sculpture in Context – National Botanic Gardens

David Claerbout Exhibition

14-22 Aug (11:00-18:00) / 24 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.

Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

www.projectartscentre.ie/event/david-claerbout/

El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State

30 Jul – 18 Oct

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

“El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State” reflects on the artistic and cultural community who gave voice to a new image for the emerging Irish state after the Easter Rising and a visual language for its politics.

The exhibition brings together a significant body of works from the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, by El Lizzitsky (1890 – 1941), one of the most influential artists of the 20th century who is shown here for the first time in Ireland.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 29 Aug

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.

Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.

I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.

From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

People’s Photography 2015 – Open Air Exhibition

11:00 – 17:00, Sun 30 Aug

St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2

People’s Photography is a massive open air photo exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. More than 200 photographers will exhibit and sell their photos. Admission is free.

The event is similar to the People’s Art Exhibition that takes place on the rails of St Stephen’s Green 4-5 times a year. But the big difference is that you have only ONE single chance to see this exhibition and that obviously paintings are replaced with photos.

A great event strongly recommended!

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 30 Aug

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks

14:00, Sun 30 Aug

Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15

More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in August on four Sundays (09+16+23+30 August) and one Saturday (22 Aug) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.

This week’s talk is entitled: “Wildlife of Ireland and Farmleigh”

As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.

The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.

The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).

Admission is free and will be distributed on a first come first served basis at the guides reception desk of Farmleigh. For further information contact farmleightours@gmail.com or call 01 815 5914.

09:00, Wed 02 Sep

Various OPW locations in Dublin

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Kilmainham Gaol and Newgrange work on a first-come, first-served basis: Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore. Dublin Castle provides continual access for self-guided tours.

+ 03 Sept: “The Irish in European warfare 17th Century: Military Origins of Diaspora” with Speaker Padraig Lenihan, NUI Galway

The Tudor Conquest of Ireland: Untold Stories” by David Edwards

“The legend of the Wild Geese now sits prominently in our cultural memory – the established narrative being of the gallantry and strength of the Irishmen exiled to European armies, forever holding out hope for redemption and return to Ireland. All the strongest legends have some basis in reality and initially any romanticizers of these exiles would have had a hard time finding evidence for their claims. In the War of the Grand Alliance (1688 – 97), the Wild Geese suffered heavily from battle and disease but were largely unappreciated in France and unnoticed at home. It is only during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701 – 14) that the mythologizing surrounding this community really comes into its own. “

I have a lot of information to give every week with between 170-200 events, but I still haven’t been able to find a good reason why in addition to Facebook and the weekly e-mail magazine, I should spend another few hours to grow my Twitter followership and to put all the events also o Twitter.

Sure, I have two accounts. My personal one @JoergSt was the one I started with and I also used it for the Dublin Event Guide and then somewhat later I set up @DublinEventG for the Dublin Event Guide only. I have about 1200 Followers on each of the two accounts, but I am not very consistent with my Twitter activities. There are big bursts of Tweets from me sometimes and then you won’t hear from me for a few days. My consistency is on Facebook and with the weekly e-mail magazine.

If you want to follow me, feel free to do so, but I am not too worried about only 1200 Followers. Other users however seem to have it as their main goal to increase the Follower Number at any cost and I realised an interesting Twitter “trick” the other week:

Out of the blue I got 6 additional followers on my private account. Unexpected and I saw no link to myself or to what I do and because they were not the most exciting/interesting accounts in my opinion – despite their 10s of thousands of followers – I didn’t follow back. A few days later I gad a look at these 6 followers again and this time also looked at their recent tweets to see if or if not I might want to follow them and interestingly all 6 were not following me anymore!

Even more interesting, 4 out of the 6 had a high Follower number, but the number of people they followed was quite low. So it seems that the strategy is to follow people and then no matter if they follow you or do not follow you, after a few days you unfollow again. Builds your follower list and at the same time makes you look more important because of the big imbalance: The big Twitter stars all have significantly more fans than people they are interested in.

Interesting what world we live in, where social or professional status is measured in Followers and Likes.

Have an event-full weekend and week,

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
