Hi all!
This is the Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events) No 420! There is no big significance in that number, apart from the fact that 420 weeks of Dublin Event Guide is flippin lots! :-) But it nevertheless made me pause for a moment and think about the future.
[ad]
Eight years of Dublin Event Guide is a long time and regularly people ask me “Why are you still doing that?”. Usually I don’t answer the question, but tell them why and how it all started. Today, however, I can tell you why I am still doing it week after week for the last 420 weeks. The reason is, because the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is only at the beginning. Still early days and soooo much more potential. ;-) So stick around and tell your friends!!
There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 58,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 58,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a quote that I came across this week and that stuck with me:
Your future is created by what you do TODAY not tomorrow.
When you read this, it is weekend and you might think that Monday is a good day to start this thing that you always wanted to do. But what about today? Could you take ONE step already today? Maybe that one step is the most important one on your path!?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week only Michelle McC was so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
A very very quiet week this week! And I still can’t get over the fact that no event organiser made use of the fact that this weekend and last weekend families have time and are looking for things to do. Would have been a perfect time for a big family event.
The shining example is the National Gallery who has LOTS of different events for kids, youths and adults.
So this weekend, there is not a single outstanding event. It improves a little during the week: The Palfest, a solidarity festival with Palestine comes with lots of widely varied events. …and then we have the Dublin City Spectacular (former Street Performance Worldchampionship) coming up from Friday!
Maybe use this weekend to check out the Science Gallery Home\Sick exhibition. It will close in two weeks already!

More Competitions to come soon! ;-)

Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

346th Mayor of Dublin appointed
The Mayor of Dublin is a purely representational role and since the more important duties for the Mayor are along the lines of lighting the Christmas tree in O’Connell Street, the appointment of the new mayor at the end of June every year is for most people not really a highlight of the year.
Last years it was attempted to change the role, give it relevance and influence and introduce a directly elected mayor, but the good councillors of Fingal County Council stopped this overdue change and forced the continuation of the irrelevance of the mayor of Dublin.
Last week the 346th Mayor was appointed. These appointments are more based on what party the person belongs to, than on his/her skills. The outgoing mayor was Christy Burke and the new mayor is Críona Ní Dhálaigh.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Riddle of the Burial Grounds
11 June – 01 Aug – 11:00-18:00 (Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!
Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?
“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.
Admission is free.

Modern Wife, Modern Life
July + August
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Modern Wife, Modern Life is an exhibition exploring the ‘ideal wife’ turned ‘modern wife’ in 1960s Ireland as seen through the pages of women’s magazines.
Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century, but with the emergence of new technologies, the advice extended to newly married women and housewives began to change in the 1960s. The concept of being an ‘ideal wife’ became closely bound up with being a ‘modern wife’. This is best identified in the pages of women’s magazines, which came to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation.
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00 and Sat-Sun 14:00-17:00

HOME\SICK – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 04 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?
HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.
The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

Dublin’s Biggest Pillow Fight
14:00, Sat 04 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
I am VERY hesitant mentioning this event because I wasn’t able to get confirmation that it has been approved by Dublin City.
Pillow Fights are a lot of fun, but the problem is that they leave a mighty mess and often organisers are not really taking control but let people use all type of pillows. And they also don’t clean up after the event!
Now imagine feathers and plastic fibres mixed up and spread all over a corner of a park. You can imagine that fun vs. pollution is a definite issue in that case and that is where a pillow fight suddenly is not good anymore.
So, if you go to the pillow fight, make sure before you take part that the cleaning up operation is organised!! …and if it isn’t, please walk away!

13 Kinder – Launch of photographic exhibition
20:00 – 23:00, Sat 04 Jul
The Copper House, Synge Street, Dublin 8
The Copper House Gallery is inviting to the launch of “13 Kinder”, a photographic exhibition by PhotoIreland Festival Portfolio Award winner Christiane Peschek. 13 Kinder will run as part of the main exhibition programme for PhotoIreland Festival 2015.
“13 Kinder explores the captivating process of self projection as seen through the eyes of German and Austrian children, aged between 4 to 10. Christiane Peschek worked with these children for several months, using the question “How do you want to be when you can become whatever is in your mind?” as a starting point. Their responses were represented through visual language, breaking the restraints of the written word, to better realise a child’s view of the world and their position within it. 13 Kinder explores the link between the memory and legacy of the past, the interpretation of the present and the possibility and desire for the future.”
13 Kinder will be on show at The Copper House Gallery from 04-31 July.
Admission to launch and exhibition is free and all are welcome.

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks
14:00, Sun 05 Jul
Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
More Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place in July on four Sundays (05+12+19+26 July) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.
This week’s talk is entitled: “Butterflies of Ireland and Farmleigh”
As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.
The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.
The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).
Admission is free and will be distributed on a first come first served basis at the guides reception desk of Farmleigh. For further information contact farmleightours@gmail.com or call 01 815 5914.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 05 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Deane, who have written about their experiences in Palestine; Pat Boran, publisher, Dedalus Press; Rita Ann Higgins, poet and dramatist from Galway and Catherine Ann Cullen from Dublin. Palestinian guests include photographer Fatin Al Tamimi and masters student Sara Al Bayyari.
The reading is an act of memory for those killed in Gaza in July 2014 and a show of support for the people in Palestine.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. Driving while disqualified is NOT ok …the law finally catches up!
There are laws and rules in Ireland that sometimes just puzzle you and when you live in a country and follow its laws/news, then there are situations where you just vigorously shake your head in disbelief. Interestingly nearly all countries have such unbelievable laws, some more and some less. In Ireland, though, it takes sometimes a little longer until something is done about it.
Maybe you can remember when penalty points and consequently the possibility of disqualification of drivers were introduced. I think it was in 2002. Since then it is possible to disqualify drivers based on the accumulation of offences and it happened a lot more than you think. But even before that time, it was – as far as I know – possible to disqualify drivers through the legal system.
But it seems disqualification doesn’t mean that much to many drivers: Since October 2013, more than 9,600 people have been disqualified from driving, but a whopping number of more than 8,100 did not hand their license in after they were disqualified as TheJournal.ie reported in February of this year. The Irish Examiner even claims that almost 13,000 drivers were disqualified in 2014 and 6000 in the first half of this year.
Out of these disqualified drivers nearly 2000 were prosecuted for continuing to drive after the disqualification, which means that the amount of drivers that just continued as if nothing had happened was significantly higher.
Now 13 years after the introduction of the penalty points system a new law came into force on 01 July: Finally, the police now have the power to arrest someone immediately if they find out that that person is disqualified and instead of a months long waiting period he/she can be brought to court on the same day.
It took a long time, but clearly disqualification is not enough for some. Let’s hope that the threat of jail time, a further ban and a penalty of up to EUR 5000 will get notorious law breakers to stay out of their car? The Irish Examiner reports here.

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
