Dublin Event Guide 413: Dockland’s Summer Festival, Family Day Festival, National Drawing Day, Smithfield Fair

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The Malahide Car Boot Sale is running every Saturday at the Malahide Rugby Club. Admission is free for buyers.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. Admission is free.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new weekly Farmer’s Market is starting in Dalkey this week with over 20 vendors selling a wide variety of foods and an eclectic selection of arts and crafts. Admission is free.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

Every year in May a 10km fundraising run is organised for members of the legal professions in Ireland. It is called the “Calcutta Run”, a 5km and 10 km run where participants collect money of at least EUR 100 before the day. Last year about 1,100 people took part and since the first Calcutta Run about 17 years ago, more than 3 mio was raised for homeless youths in Dublin and Calcutta.

You can’t take part in the race, but you can cheer the runners on and after the run there will be a BBQ, bar, live music, DJ and fun activities at the Finish Line Festival in the grounds of the Law Society at Blackhall Place. Because you pay for your burger etc, in previous years people that weren’t running weren’t kicked out but could also join the festivities and positive atmosphere.

The start and finish of the race is at Blackhall Place and the race then goes to Phoenix Park and back.

On Saturday and Sunday the Dockland’s Summer Festival will happen again. There will be Food Market, Wakeboard Demos, Duck Race, Street Performers, Raft Challenge and DJs. Let’s hope for good weather!

It’s a great event, an outdoor festival and based on the weather forecast, I would suggest that you go there on Saturday! I was once there in torrential rain and as you can imagine it is a lot less fun.

National Drawing Day is taking place this Saturday and under the leadership of the National Gallery over 170 Museums, Galleries, Libraries and Cultural Centres across Ireland are taking part.

At the National Gallery, Donald Teskey will launch Drawing Day at 11:00 and he will lead a team of artists: Michelle Boyle, Comhghall Casey, Alan Daly, Mollie Douthit, Grainne Dowling, Vera Klute, Fintan Mahon, Cian McLoughlin, Dorothy Smyth and Saoirse Wall, who will tutor and draw in the galleries. It’s the ideal opportunity to try your hand at sketching, and to pick up some valuable hints and tips.

On the National Drawing Day, be part of Maeve Clancy’s ‘The Bigger Picture’.

People from across Ireland will attend drawing workshops at the National Gallery of Ireland, the Hunt Museum, Limerick, Creative Spark, Louth and the LAB and will virtually combine their drawings to make one large art work.

At the LAB, you will be drawing with the help of artist Gabhann Dunne, currently showing in the First Floor Gallery.

The Terenure Village Market has moved to Bushy Park and is from now on a weekly market.

The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?

HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.

The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

The 14th Skerries Traditional Music Festival will take place from Fri 15 – Sun 17 May. There are a number of non-free events, but in the evenings and during the day outdoors there are a whole range of Sessions in the pubs/venues of Skerries and they seem to be free.

At the National Museum Drawing Day Drop-in event in Collins Barracks, discover what a source of inspiration the Museum can be for budding artists and designers of all ages. A collection of poetry by the late Diana Erskine-Hill will be recited. Her husband, Kenneth Edwards and a group of Diana’s friends will recite. Diana was herself deaf and she regularly recited at meetings with people with a hearing impairment. She lost most of her hearing when she was four years old at a time when young children weren’t given hearing aids. She learned to lip read and eventually was given a hearing aid, life really began for her. She never gave up trying to overcome the difficulties posed by a hearing difficulty and spent much of her time helping others cope.

Kenneth Edwards, Diana’s husband, has published a collection of her poetry. The poems reflect her struggles with hearing impairment, her sensitivity to others as well as her love of nature, singing, chanting and drumming.

Light refreshments will be served from 14:00. Admission is free and booking is not required.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sunday. A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

One Family is a one-parent family organisation in Dublin and every year they organise the Family Day Festival for everyone (not only one-parent families!). In previous years the event was in Iveagh Gardens, this year it will be on Wolfetone Square. There will be a packed programme of entertainment, games, workshops and performances to enjoy and it will be suitable for all ages.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. “Sean Scully in context” with Dr Declan Long, NCAD is the Sunday Lecture in the National Gallery. It is part of a free series of talks in May on the theme of Sean Scully & Contemporary Art.

ActionAid is hosting a free screening of the film Cairo 678 in Filmbaseon Monday. The film tells the poignant story of three women and their search for justice from the daily plight of harassment in Egypt.

Before the film ActionAid will also present the first performance of the play “Five Women”. Written by Irish playwright Alan Flanagan, Produced by No Drama and Directed by At Large Theatre; the play draws on five fictional women’s stories to highlight everyday violence and harassment of women in public spaces.

“Bringing the Nation to Book: Literacy and Irish Nationalism” is a lecture by Prof Andrew Murphy (University of St. Andrews) during his term as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Trinity Long Room Hub.

The lecture “Publishing Values? Women’s Magazines and Everyday Life in 1960s Ireland” with Dr Ciara Meehan (Senior Lecturer in History & Associate Programme Tutor for Humanities, School of Humanities, University of Hertfordshire) will explore the representation and expectations of Irish women in the 1960s as seen through the pages of women’s magazines in the NLI’s collections.

Manuals on how to be a good wife had been widely available in Ireland at the start of the twentieth century. In the 1960s, women’s magazines began to replace the traditional manual as a source for guidance. The message, driven by the advertisers, was clear: a ‘good wife’ was not just beautifully presented, but also used all the latest ‘modern’ devices. Her home – especially the kitchen – was an extension of her appearance and reputation. ‘Modern life’ and ‘modern wife’ became blended into the one ideal.

Ciara Meehan is curator of the Modern Wife, Modern Life exhibition, which will open at the National Print Museum of Ireland in July 2015.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. The first of two events in honour of WB Yeats’ 150th birthday is inspired by his famous lines: “That he follow with desire/Bodies that can never tire”. The event is a whole-day Dance Marathon in Henry Street and is called “Bodies That Can Never Tire: The Whole City Must Dance – the Whole City Must Bid!”

The event is also part of Dublin’s bid to be European Capital of Culture 2020 and it invites Dublin’s dancers to mix contemporary, hip-hop, ballet, tap, jazz (and everything in between) in a celebration of movement, creativity and dance. “Singing Our Cares Away” is a Music Therapy workshop with Rachel Dempsey.

The workshop is open to everyone, regardless of singing ability and age. Learn to sing a range of easy-to-learn, uplifting and inspiring songs from all over the world. You will also learn about some ways of using the voice to reduce stress and enhance wellbeing.

There will be no solo singing and you don’t need to be able to read music. Participants will learn two or three exercises to take away and try at home on a regular basis. Rachel will emphasise the fun, joy and sense of being uplifted that singing can bring.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Every Thursday “Left Right & Centre” play a mix of blues & soul with a bit of rock&roll.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The yearly Woolshed Karaoke Competition is running from 23 Apr-30 May. The heats are happening every Thursday and the semi finals are on 14+21 May, with the Grand Final being held on 30 May.

Entry to the competition is free and anyone can participate. Just put your name down on the night. The overall winner will get to record a CD at Temple Lane Studios in Dublin.

If you don’t want to enter the competition you can still come along and sing for fun. Every singer will get a free drink.

Don’t rely on other people speaking for you. You have to speak for yourself and don’t want to regret it afterwards if the opinion that you have is not heard. Polling stations are open from 07:00-22:00 and while it is shockingly undemocratic that letter ballots for people who can’t be at home for whatever reason are still not permitted in Ireland, at least the hours are quite long so that you have a good chance to vote.

This is the first in a new set of annual Irish Historic Towns Atlas (IHTA) seminars that will explore Irish towns and cities within the European context. Irish towns will be compared with counterparts in Austria, Finland, France, Poland and Ukraine. The plenary paper will be presented by Professor Michael Conzen, University of Chicago, who will look at the challenges of comparative urban history.
