Hi all!

St. Patrick’s Weekend with lots and lots of events and I had a challenging week with issues at work which ultimately delayed this Dublin Event Guide. So, without further delay, enjoy the weekend and celebrate St. Patrick and Ireland well.

[ad]

Please please please, consider donating if you cane to keep the show on the road. The bills need to be paid (EUR 190 per month) and every vent counts. Thanks! www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm

The Sponsorship I was able to get from some companies helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough. The cost are still above that AND I need some money to make some changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 55,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is an advertisement by Samsung in Turkey. It only directly affected one man and his neighbourhood, but the idea is great and I think it is a good Feel Good slot video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrvaSqN76h4

Muharrem is hearing impaired and to launch a call centre for hearing impaired people, they taught Muharrem’s neighbourhood sign language so that they could communicate with him. Have a look!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Marta E, Rose P and Fiona D were so great to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help and keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

There is no question about my picks week:

I will be at the Big Day Out on Sunday and – if I manage – will take part in the Treasure Hunt on Saturday. And apart from that, will try to get to some of the other St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Events. Especially the Music in the City events are for me!

And what about the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Tuesday? I would recommend that you only go into town if you are early enough to get a good viewing position as otherwise the parade can’t be enjoyed.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

St. Patrick’s Weekend

The St. Patrick’s Weekend is one of the biggest celebrations in Ireland. Not only is it the feast of the National Saint, but it is also the weekend where official events take place in every corner of Dublin and the rest of the country. The only annoying thing about this day is that it is in March. Allegedly the 17 March is the day St. Patrick died, but there is no definite proof for that, so the date is more or less a random date and could have put in any other month as well. Maybe a month were it is a little warmer?

The St Patrick’s Day Parade on 17 March has improved over the years, but is still somewhat disappointing. The theme is so wide (“Celebrate Now” this year.) that there might not be a theme at all and while the floats and groups taking part every year do their best and invest a LOT of time and money, they are all “very nice”, but not really “wow”. The biggest problem with the parade is that the parade route it is much too short to accommodate all the people that want to see it.

Unless you arrive extremely early, you will have serious difficulty getting a good viewing position and if you are in the fourth row or even further back, then you will miss most. Small people are extremely disadvantaged and please leave your buggy/pram/etc at home, there is really no room for it. The parade route is much too short to give people a chance to see it. You will read afterwards that more than 500,000 people saw the parade, but that is all nonsense and hype. Nevertheless about 200k people could be there and that amount on a route of just 2.7km is just too high. which means that only half of the 200k actually see the parade.

Some people think the parade is an unmissable highlight of the St. Patrick’s Festival, others think it is the worst part of it. I think it has improved a lot from the 80s and 90s, but in general I have been more often disappointed than not. So, if you want to SEE the parade, come REALLY early (people at the front arrive at 08:00!!) or consider watching it on TV. If you come to town for the atmosphere, then do that but don’t be disappointed if you only see masses of mad Leprechauns.

There are, however, much better events than the Parade. Go to the Big Day Out, or take part in the Treasure Hunt and enjoy some of the I Love my City events. They are really really good! So don’t be disencouraged by the parade!!

Patricks and Patricias go free

The Guinness Storehouse and St. Patrick’s Cathedral have a special offer for all Patricks, Patricias and everyone else with a related name (Find the name variation list from Guinness here.) this weekend. If you carry a related name and can proof it using your formal ID, then you will be allowed in for free in both venues on 17 March. Details for St. Patrick’s Cathedral are here and for the Guinness Storehouse here.

Discover the world – New routes from Dublin Airport

There will be lots of New Routes from Dublin Airport in Summer 2015 so that you can discover new corners of the Earth. A complete list is here and I’d say some of you will get itchy feet after looking at that list!

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

Eventbrite Picks will be back next week again.

Until then, you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Visual tribute to W. B. Yeats – Dublin Painting and Sketching Club

The Dublin Painting and Sketching Club will honour William Butler Yeats, on the 150th anniversary of his birth, with this exhibition of artwork inspired by his poetry.

The Yeats painting and 250 others will also be on view at the Club’s very popular annual exhibition, in the Concourse Gallery, County Hall, Marine Rd., Dun Laoghaire, from 13-26 April.

Life Stilled – Joe Dunne – RHA Gallery

13 March – 26 April

RHA Gallery, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2

A selection of still-life and interior-based paintings by Joe Dunne will be shown in this exhibition.

And because it is sooo good in saying absolutely nothing, let me give you the FULL description of the paintings:

“Usually, the primary stimulus [for the paintings] is the formal, abstract and poetic aspect. Sometimes the choice of subject, whether conscious or unconscious, admits other elements, so an awareness of meaning may enter the process or be perceived on viewing the finished work.
In this sense, the predominant aesthetic and approach is reminiscent of a haiku poem. The paintings express a way of looking at nature and life through everyday subjects and experience, whether beautiful or ugly, exalted or humble. They are not overtly metaphorical but instead encourage the viewer to just pause and take notice. Being modest in scale, the works offer a momentary insight into the essence of the ordinary, or at least call to mind such a moment.”

St Patrick’s Treasure Hunt

10:00 – 13:00, Sat 14 Mar

Front Square, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin 2

The great St Patrick’s Weekend Treasure Hunt takes place again. It is a fun event for the whole family and I strongly recommend it. This year the hunt starts at Trinity College (in previous years it was City Hall) and you can register on the day between 10:00 and 13:00.

You have then until later in the day (previous years: approx. 17:00) to answer the questions and bring the answers and collected stamps back to the start. I have NO idea how it is decided who wins, but it doesn’t really matter as you don’t take part to win, but for the fun, learning and great day out.

The hunt takes you 1 hour and 45 minutes, but if you take it a little easier, it could take a good but longer and why rushing like mad!? There is a mini hunt available for families with children.

Max 4 people can be in a team, but you can have a team of less than 4 as well. If you have done SERIOUS treasure hunts before, then leave your expectations at home. ;-) This one will not challenge you and is not difficult at all. It is a treasure hunt for the whole family so the questions are quite easy.

Lifelogging – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 14 Mar

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.

In one area, every week another group/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.

Admission to the Science Gallery is free. Opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Mother’s Day

08:00, Sun 15 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

Today is Mother’s Day in Ireland, so make sure you do something nice for you rmom if she is around and if she is not around anymore, do something she would love you to do! Yes, Mother’s Day got commercialised, but it’s never a bad thing to say THANKS! to your mother and we tend to forget it without these reminder days.

If you are not Irish and especially if your native language is not English, then there is a very high probability that today is NOT Mother’s Day where you are from. (For example in Germany it is on 10 May.) In that case just ring your mom aynway and thank her for what she has done for her. She will appreciate getting two Mother’s Day Thanks from you! :-)

And if you are a Mother yourself, take it from me: Mother’s rock! …because without them, we all wouldn’t be here! ;-)

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. St. Patrick’s Day Parade

12:00, Tue 17 Mar

Dublin (various locations)

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade traditionally takes place on 17 March. The pageants are nice and I hope you will sense the theme “Celebrate Now”, which is a kind of “Catch All” theme.

The marching bands are outstanding with bands this year from Chicago, Mexico, Georgia, Indiana, Texas, North Dakota, New York, North Carolina, NEvada, New Mexico, Lousiana, Mississippi and Germany and Clondalkin.

The parade starts at Parnell Square goes down O’Connell Street, then College Green, Dawson Street to Christ Church. Most people are in O’Connell Street, on O’Connell Bridge and then in Dawson Street. If you don’t bring your step ladder (many do!) of arrive really early (at least 2 hours before the start) so that you get a front row place, you will most likely not see much of the parade and might better stay at home to watch it on TV. The only location where in recent years I found it was a little easier to see something is after Christ Church when the parade turns towards St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Enda Kenny, the biggest bully in Ireland?

Independent TD Mick Wallace is not respected much outside of the constituency that voted him into the Dail in 2011. He is an odd individual, a former builder, a tax dodger and certainly not someone that instils you with confidence as a representative of the citizens of Ireland. In some areas his opinions are rather outlandish, but he is not wrong in all areas. I really don’t like him and think he should have never been elected (and that applies to most independent TDs), but there are a few things that I dislike even more than Mick Wallace!

This week one of these hated things happened in the Dail against Mick Wallace by someone who should definitely know better: Enda Kenny, the Taoiseach of this country, bullied Mick Wallace in the most arrogant way and – shockingly – nearly made feel sympathy with Mick Wallace. Enda Kenny’s behaviour was despicable and proved that he is anything else than a statesman, not even a respectable person.

Watch this video clip and see what happened www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UcXS1JlvdM

Dail Eireann, the Irish Parliament, has a translation system so that the members of the Dail can use the English or Irish language. Sure, they all understand English, but to make a point some insist at certain occasions to speak Irish. In case you don’t know, both English and Irish are official languages in Ireland. Irish is called the “first official language” in the Constitution and English is the second official language, but that doesn’t make English less official than Irish.

Last week was Irish Language Week (Seachtain na Gaeilge) and because of this once yearly event, the “Leader’s Questions” slot on the Dail agenda was held in Irish. Mick Wallace, and with him a large part of the Dail members, obviously doesn’t speak Irish very well, so he asked an (admittedly quite silly) question in English. Enda Kenny (in his former life: a school teacher from Mayo) decided to reply back in Irish. Not a big problem, because the translators can translate it into English for Wallace. But Wallace didn’t have a working headphone and therefore he couldn’t listen to the translation and what does Kenny do? No, he doesn’t show tolerance and understanding and replies back in English, helping to overcome the technical downfalls in the Dail. Instead, he insists on speaking Irish and even seems to ridicule Wallace.

This is nothing else but bullying in one of the worst possible ways. Enda Kenny should be ashamed! This is NOT the way a “leader” acts!

Here is what TheJournal.ie wrote about it.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
