Hi all!

I could write every week a drama about what challenges were thrown my way in the many hours it takes me to prepare this Dublin Event Guide. I know work through two nights, but tiredness is a problem at times if I don’t sleep. So today I am looking for smart people that have cracked the challenge of working non-stop 44 hours without sleep. Let me know your tricks! :-P

[ad]

Thanks a lot for some wonderful people to send a donation in my direction last week. That was a BIG help. With the month already being more or less over, we still din’t make it to the EUR 190 but we are lots closer. SO I will leave my appeal here for another week ad maybe some more great people will read it!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a problem! There are less and less donations. I really really don’t like begging, but more donations are required to keep the whole service going. The money is not for me (I actually don’t make a cent from the Dublin Event Guide.) instead it is to cover all the cost. I am in the process of looking for cheaper service providers, but if you don’t think the Dublin Event Guide is worth just EUR 1 per month, then we have a completely different problem! So if you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 55,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is a ideo clip again. I found it on Facebook first and then tracked it down on You Tube. It is a boy dancing to Parrell Williams’ “Happy” at a Kentucky High School Basketball game. Here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCpAzWvEPHY

And what is the great thing about it? There are a number of aspects but the main one is encapsulated in the wish/suggestion/advise: “Dance like nobody’s watching!” This boy didn’t care much. He had a good time and he wasn’t worried that he might not be good enough or might make a show of himself. These are concerns we grown ups have!! And we have them all the time!

So your challenge for next week is to live a bit more like the boy in that video clip! Just enjoy it, whatever it is you would like doing …and care less about what others think!!!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Majella M, Jennyfer P, Emeline J, Pauline R, Joe O’D and Clodagh C were so great to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really appreciate all the help and keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there is a Street Graffiti event in the Bernard Shaw with some of the best Graffiti Artists on Saturday and then there are some Family events in connection with the Polska-Eire Festival on Wolftone Square (Sat+Sun) and on Meeting House Square on Sunday. Also Earth Hour on Saturday, go dark for an hour! And the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday is always a good event to go to.

BUY FROM AMAZON VIA THIS LINK TO HELP THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE

Postage to Ireland is free for most orders if you buy for more than GBP 25! And with every order via this link, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) gets a small commission:

Competitions

Promote your product or event through a competition!

If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The “Dublin: One City, One Book” Festival is a yearly festival in April during which one selected book that features Dublin is celebrated with a whole variety of events. This year the people selecting a book couldn’t decide and chose not one but THREE books, but they are in one trilogy, so there is a link. The chosen books are The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van by Roddy Doyle and these books are also called the Barrytown Trilogy. The festival website is here www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/ and the free events during the festival will be included in the Dublin Event Guide from now until the end of April. There will be lots of non-free events as well and you can find them at www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/events

Dublin Video in timelapse

A great video of Dublin was created by Ammar Al-Saleh (or Ammar Saleh), who lives in Dublin and comes from Kuwait. He filmed the footage over 4 months and then created a 4 minute hyper-timelapse film from it. Dublin is looking good!

Watch the video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-IyJ-3EKBw

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

Event picks from Eventbrite again next week.

Until then you can find more events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Sylvanian Families in Dublin

11:30 – 16:00, Sat 28 Mar

Dundrum Town Centre, Dundrum, Co. Dublin

If you are a parent or are young enough, you probably know all about the Sylvanian families, but if you are older or anglo-saxon-cultur-challenged (I just made that word up.) you might never have heard about Sylvanian families. They are collectible plastic figures of animals that live in the forest (“sylvan” means “of the forest”). They were created in 1985 in Japan but found their popularity more in the US and in Britain through animated TV series.

Long intro just because I have no clue and needed to look it up! ;-) But if you are interested in this event, you know all about them, I’d say:

Hamley’s in Dundrum Town Centre is inviting to a free family event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Sylvanian families. There will be live entertainment, photo opportunities, competitions and goodie bags.

Fans can enjoy watching their favourite characters (Freya Chocolate, Ralph Walnut, Tiffany Golightly and Abigail Bramble) singing and dancing on stage, or pose for photographs with them between the shows.

You can download a colouring sheet from the official Sylvanian Families Twitter and Facebook pages and bring the coloured-in sheet on the day to have a chance to win a prize. There will also be goodie bags available during each performance.

The performances are 30 min long and start at 11:30, 13:00, 14:30 and 15:30.

Lifelogging – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 28 Mar

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

“Lifelogging – Do you count?” is the title of the newest Science Gallery exhibition, which started on Friday 13 Feb and will run until 12 April.

Lifelogging is part exhibition, part Science Gallery Lab where you can take part in research projects and it deals with us tracking ourselves, measuring things we do and logging everything from heartbeat to heartbreak.

Get a taste for tracking as you play games with your emotions, use your brainwaves to sort files, generate music wearing sensors, and explore a virtual world filled with real dreams and memories.

The exhibits at this exhibition are fascinating: There is George Reynolds who recorded his health on paper since 2003. A sensible and understandable version of lifelogging. On the other end of the spectrum is Alberto Frigo who takes a picture every times he holds an object with his right hand. He started in 2003 and plans to continue until 2040. On the surface it doesn’t make sense AT ALL. But when you talk to him, you find out that there is a surprising sense to what he does.

The exhibition contains 16 exhibits some so odd that you should get the super helpful and knowledgeable Science Gallery mediators to help you understand what is behind it.

In one area, every week another group/organisation will involve you in their work (the Lab part) and I will explain their project in a separate event posting in the weekly Dublin Event Guide.

Admission to the Science Gallery is free. Opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Your Audible Brainwaves Self – Lab in the Science Gallery – Lifelogging

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 28 Mar

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

From Wednesday until Sunday, the Lab in the Science Gallery that accompanies the Lifelogging exhibition will look at “Your Audible Brainwaves Self”. TOG the Dublin Hackerspace is the organisation behind this week’s Lab.

Brain imaging tools often claim to allow an insight into our inner world; our levels of alertness and restfulness, sleep and wakefulness, and on a very basic level, our thought processes. The researchers for this week have been developing audiovisual software that manipulates the raw waveform data from these affordable logging devices, allowing visitors in the Lab to both see and hear different representations of their own brainwaves in real time, and to investigate how contrasting stimuli in the gallery setting might change these readings.

TOG is a hackerspace based in the centre of Dublin. It is a shared space where members have a place to be creative and work on their projects in an environment that is both inspiring and supportive of both new and old technologies.

Admission to the Lab in the Science Gallery is free.

Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1

I am afraid that I don’t know much of what this is about, so let me quote the website directly:

“A seminar drawing on the installation “Scientia Civitatis: Missing Titles” by Vagabond Reviews evoking an inter-disciplinary prism on Dublin and the contemporary city.
Chaired by independent curator Valerie Connor, this seminar sets out to make a reading of the contemporary city through the prism of the Scientia Civitatis: Missing Titles installation. The installation, part of the Phoenix Rising Art and Civic Imagination exhibition, presents 48 titles for as yet unwritten books about the city from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives within the human sciences. Vagabond Reviews has invited the contributors of those missing titles to participate in an interdisciplinary reading of the city.”

Taking The Dog For A Walk – Music Documentary Screening

17:00, Sun 29 Mar

Workman’s Club, 10 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2

“Taking The Dog For A Walk – Conversations with British Improvisers” is a Music Documentary by Antoine Prum and it’s first screening in Ireland will be on Sunday in the Workman’s Club.

This feature-length music documentary maps the scene of British Free Improvised Music, past and present. Director Antoine Prum is assisted by bass sax improviser Tony Bevan and stand-up comedian Stewart Lee, who speak to musicians from different generations and backgrounds. Alternating with extended live music sequences, the conversations gravitate around the idiosyncrasies of improvisation, from playing in front of the proverbial “four men and a dog” to pursuing a career in a milieu where success is not measured by mainstream criteria.

This is a free event in so far as there is no admission charge, but when you leave, you are asked to pay as much as you think the film is worth. I think this is a fair approach and am therefore happy to include it here.

April Fool’s Day

08:00, Wed 01 Apr

Dublin (various locations)

Warning:
As a principle don’t believe anything you read today in a newspaper or online. Once you read it, analyse it and if it sounds slightly farfetched then there is a high April Fool’s risk. ;-) Some journalists are really good at inventing stories (maybe because they have a lot of practise during the year?) so you could easily be caught out!

First Wednesday – Free Entrance to OPW Sites

09:00, Wed 01 Apr

Various OPW locations in Dublin

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:
+ The Casino, Marino
+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange
+ Glendalough Visitor Centre in Wicklow

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Good Friday

08:00, Fri 03 Apr

Dublin (various locations)

Today is Good Friday and it is a weird day in Ireland. As a once VERY catholic country Ireland was trying to force everybody in the country to stick to catholic rules, but at the same time the day was never a public holiday. Even if you are a visiting Ireland and are not catholic, you will not find a single pub that is open today. And alcohol is also hard to come by. Read some more about the weirdness of this day here: www.joergsteegmueller.com/2015/03/27/good-friday-the-oddest-day-of-the-year/

Shops will be open as normal. Most businesses are open as normal, but banks will be closed and schools are holidays. Many public service offices will be closed as well. But if you do have to work in a private enterprise today, you have no right on overtime/weekend pay, it is just a normal Friday.

Today is NOT a public holiday, so all rules for traffic and parking are like on a normal Friday as well.

Because all pubs are closed and all public offices are also closed, it is a day with very few events! In previous year there have been some pubs that opened from 00:00, but I haven’t heard anything about that yet this year. Check the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page where I will post updates if I can find out anything.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Blessing roads to reduce traffic accidents?

My background is somewhat conflicted, I grew up with parents who could be described as VERY catholic, but then I also have a science and logic based education where strongly religious views just didn’t find a place in the construct of the world. But I definitely wouldn’t describe myself as an atheist or agnostic. So in other words I am sitting firmly on the fence or you could also say I am caught between two stools: I would describe myself as spiritual and I do believe in some higher force that has the ability to guide is if we so wish, and I also go to mass because I believe in the community that I find there as the foundation of a friendly and stable society, but as far as “getting to heaven” is concerned I am without doubt a hopeless case.

Why this long winded introduction, you wonder? Well some of you might totally disagree with the This is Odd! this week, so I thought it was appropriate to explain that I am not just bashing one or the other side because I myself have a foot in both camps.

What caught my attention last week was an article in the Irish Examiner on Monday in which it is reported that the Road Safety Office of Mayo County Council (Doesn’t really sound like a religious organisation, right?) is promoting an event on Easter Sunday. It is a “Road Blessing Ceremony”, which will take place at all Catholic and Church of Ireland churches.

I understand the Road Safety Office’s intention to raise awareness of road safety, but a blessing of the road is their best effort to reduce road deaths? Are we that desperate? Raising awareness means getting the message to the people that are in the problematic demographic group. Maybe it is the drunken elderly farmers that can be reached, but otherwise I am not convinced that the target group will be found in a church in Mayo on Easter Sunday.

Odd!!!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
