Hi all!

Lots of free events again. And the first big event of the year is the Temple Bar Trad Fest that starts this Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how the big events this year turn out. For example, will the Street Performance World Championship, or as it is now called, the City Spectacular get the sponsorship that they need after Laya Healthcare was taken over by AIG? And what about all these other events that need money from external sources? Will we maybe have to settle for smaller events and forget about the big free festivals? No big event has been announced yet.

[ad]

And what about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)? Last week nobody supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation but the bills are still coming in and the main cost (for sending the weekly e-mail magazine in a spam-filter resistant way) is getting more and more expensive because of the Dollar-Euro exchange rate changes. If you could help with a donation, please go to this page or if your company/employer would be interested in sponsoring the Dublin Event Guide contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com Thanks!!

This is what I need your help with:

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) only exists because you told other people about it and because a few generous people support it with donations. Keep doing exactly that, please! Tell all your friends and family and colleagues about it and – if you can – please also help with a donation.

The Sponsorship I was able to get helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 53,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

For today’s Feel Good Slot “Thought of the day”-type quote is intended to motivate you:

Excuses will always be there for you. Opportunity won’t.

So grab the opportunities that present themselves or the ones that you have discovered because they were a little more hidden. If you don’t grab them NOW, they might be gone very soon. …and stay away from these excuses!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week not a single person supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. That’s bad news! I really really really appreciate all the help and keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend you could go to the Dublin Flea Market on Sunday and apart from that, I suggest that you select a museum that you have never been or not been for a long time.

There is the National Museum (Kildare Street and Collins Barracks), the Natural Museum (Merrion Street), the National Gallery (Clare Street), the Hugh Lane Gallery (Parnell Square). Pick one of them!! Ohh, museums and galleries are not your thing? Then DEFINITELY go to one of them and try to go with an open mind. If you find something interesting in a museum depends in my opinion totally on how you approach it. Bring ALL your curiosity with you and if in general museums are a bit of a problem for you, then start with the National Museum in Collins Barrack this week!! And feel free to tell me how it was: dublineventguide@gmail.com

Promote your product or event through a competition!

If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Irish Design 2015

Irish Design 2015 is a series of events this year about all aspects of Design. The events are organised by the Design & Crafts Council Ireland. The event website is super design-ey and contains LOTS of information about the events, but I gave up after 10 minutes on it. It was too much to handle for me. I will give it another go during the week, but maybe I am just too simple. ;-) Until then you will have to try it yourself. The programme is here www.irishdesign2015.ie/programme

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

J.M.W. Turner – The Vaughan Bequest – National Gallery

01-31 January

National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2

The “Vaughan Bequest” is a collection of 31 watercolours and drawings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851). The collection spans Turner’s early topographical scenes and expressive images from his later European tours.

Henry Vaughan, the English collector who bequeathed these works, died unmarried in 1899, aged 90. He divided his Turner watercolours between the national galleries in London, Dublin and Edinburgh.

His bequest to the National Gallery of Ireland stipulated that the drawings should be exhibited to the public, free of charge, each January when the light is at its lowest level. The Gallery continues to adhere to the conditions of Vaughan’s bequest by showing these luminous watercolours for one month only. The exhibition this year will display the watercolours and drawings in their original frames.

Growing Closer – NCAD Community Garden Farm Project Exhibition

15-28 Jan (Mon-Fri: 13:00-17:00)

NCAD Gallery, 100 Thomas St, Dublin 8

Fabian Strunden & Rian Coulter explain the NCAD Community Garden Farm project through an exhibition in the NCAD Gallery.

The NCAD Community Garden Farm was founded in January 2014 by the NCAD Students’ Union in partnership with community gardener Tony Lowth. Since its inception, it has provided the skills, tools and space to turn raw materials such as land, compost, metal and wood into the resources needed for intensive growing. Stretching from Thomas Street to Oliver Bond Street, the brown-field site next door to the National College of Art and Design has been transformed into the largest food-growing garden farm in Dublin City Centre, producing seasonal vegetables, salad ingredients and fruit. With an emphasis on sustainable farming and community building, this farm prototype is a prospective model for farming as art & design/activism.www.facebook.com/events/1521477271447596/

New Voices: Sandy Kennedy “Sonnet”

15-29 Jan (Closing reception: 29 Jan – 18:00-21:00)

Centre for Creative Practices, 15 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2

The Centre for Creative Practices is unfortunately closing and this is their last exhibition and event (Admission is free):

New Voices: Sandy Kennedy “Sonnet”
There is a quietness, a rhythm of time passing, a dreamlike or hallucinogenic feel to the work, which sometimes uses ordinary specific words. The film is of the installation made with paper, thread and graphite, it concentrates on the only written line of the Shakespearean ‘Sonnet ‘O No it is an ever fix ed mark’. The work, which is bathed in silences, investigates and plays with ideas of subtle representations and perceptions, its relationship to text, sound, touch, taste, smell, senses most associated with memory. This work includes paintings, drawings, installation and film.

Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

In his solo exhibition “A Voodoo free Phenomenon” for the Project Arts Centre, Garrett Phelan explores the power and influence that cultural traditions and artefacts have on the contemporary psyche.

Through the recollection of his own experience witnessing the winter solstice at Newgrange, and numerous visits to ancient sites throughout his life and travels, he questions the power such antiquated relics hold over us today.

Admission to the preview on 29 Jan and to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition will normally open from 11:00-20:00.

Welcome Disturbances – Group Exhibition

29 January – 11 April (Mon-Fri: 10:00-17:00, Sat: 10:00-18:00)

The Lab, Foley Street, Dublin 1

“Welcome Disturbances” is a group exhibition of new work by Cindy Cummings, David Stalling, Sofie Loscher, Maeve O’ Connor, Emma Finucan, Siobhan McDonald, Mark Cullen. It is curated by Sheena Barrett and Emer O’Boyle.

“The group exhibition shows the diverse practices of recipients of the UCD Science Artist in Residence Award. UCD Art in Science is a dynamic practice based programme that brings artists and scientists from undergraduate to professional levels, together in collaborative work. Since the pilot residency in 2012, the artists in residence have engaged with scientists in neuroscience, cognitive science, marine biology, plant biology, geophysics, paleobotany, advanced optical imaging, spectroscopy and astronomy. Their conversations have led to an inspiring body of work, through a mutual openness to communicating across the traditional boundaries of the disciplines. The diversity of the work reflects the open and dynamic nature of the project and includes, sculpture, installation, painting, drawing, video and performances. We will also launch our programme of public events and publication to accompany the exhibition.”

A preview evening is on Thurs 29 Jan from 18:00-20:00. Admission is free.

Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square North, Dublin 1

The film screening of “Moving Dublin” (2009, 60min) by Cleary and Connolly will take place. Admission is free, but seats are limited.

The film description says:
“Is Dublin becoming a centreless and edgeless sprawl on the model of Los Angeles, following its curve of affluence but learning nothing from its mistakes? Is the poverty and alienation in Dublin’s inner city and in the western and northern suburbs part of a descending spiral of urban decay? Or will the economic affluence of a decade ago re-establish itself and eventually ‘lift all boats’ to give the nascent urban regeneration a chance to succeed? Shot in 2007, Moving Dublin explores the everyday world of movement in Dublin and its vast sprawling suburbs spreading out west from the coastal city. The film looks at how far the contemporary world of the Dublin commuter has strayed from the civic realm it constituted when Joyce wrote the Wandering Rocks chapter of Ulysses.”

The paper concerns itself with how initial colonial declarations about landscape might have lasting effect in a particular space.”

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Airport Security – You can bring a knife again!

Good news for your granny! There is a good chance that she will be allowed to keep the nail clippers if she takes a plane to go on holidays or visit relatives. And your pocket knife is safe as well as long as the blade is not longer than 6cm!!

In a surprise development the airport security rules were significantly loosened some months ago. You are still now allowed to bring toy guns, harpoons, catapults, tasers, axes, hatchets, razor blades (!), box cutters, swords and sabres, BUT you are not allowed to bring knives and scissors on board of a plane again as long as the blade is less than 6cm long.

It might appear to us odd that this is allowed again, but when you think about it, it is not odd at all, because there has never been a plane hijacking where nail clippers or scissors or mini-knives have been used, so it is off that the nail clipper had been classified as a dangerous weapon in the first place.

AND it is also odd that you are now allowed to bring a (small) knife, but your bottle of water is still not allowed. This is odd because there has never been an attempt to use liquids to cause any harm on board and the alleged “terrorists” that had planned to use weed killer and other chemicals were all released with NO charge because the threat was invented by the British police.

What an odd world we live in!
