Dublin Event Guide 398: Temple Bar Trad Fest, Last Sunday Roast, Green Drinks Dublin, First Wednesday

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Belvedere College Art Department is inviting to a 2-day exhibition on Sat 31 Jan and Sun 01 Feb which will feature art works created by past and present students and artists from the wider Belvedere College Community. The work will be showcased in Belvedere House, one of the finest Georgian buildings in Dublin.

There are contributions from current pupils, graduates who are studying Art, Craft and Design at third level and those who have pursued their careers in the Visual Arts, alongside work from other artists. The exhibition will showcase the work of a number of notable past pupils such as Harry Clarke, sculptor Patrick Campbell, Film director Seán Branigan, Architects Sam Stephenson, Michael Scott and David Leech, designers Alan Aboud and Dermot Flynn, members of the RHA Geraldine O’Neill, Thomas Ryan and Seán O’ Sullivan.

The collection will feature over 120 artworks including paintings, drawings, prints, graphic design, sculptural pieces, architectural designs, film and jewellery. All in the beautiful surroundings of Michael Stapleton’s ornate stucco decoration. The exhibition marks the opening of the recently refurbished building, Belvedere House.

The Drumcondra Village Market is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. Admission is free.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

From 28 Jan until 01 Feb the 10th Temple Bar Trad Fest will take place. There are lots of events throughout the 5 days. There are non-free headline gigs and there are also lots and lots of free ticketed events with the highlight of the Frontrow Sessions with well known trad performers and a range of other free events (see at the end of this mail). In addition there is a “Music Trail” in 14 pubs in Temple Bar with free trad music from Wednesday until Sunday.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Tradfest children’s crafts brings you under the sea. Try a variety of traditional crafts using different materials and all crafts sessions are inspired by the colours, stories, songs and creatures that live in the sea around Ireland.

The 30min long sessions run every 45 minutes and places are assigned from the Ark Box Office on a first come, first served basis from from 11:00 on Saturday and 12:00 on Sunday.

Suitable for Ages 4+. Admission is free. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

This is a unique chance for children to come and play in a real trad session. Drop in to this open trad seisiún led by members of Ceoltóirí Chluain Tarbh.

Children who can play a tune on the fiddle, bodhrán, harp, concertina, or any instrument at all (even non-traditional instruments) are welcome to come along and give trad music a try. The event is not suitable for complete beginners, but it is recommended for children (from 6 years of age) who are already learning music.

Families are invited to come and watch.

This is a drop-in session and places will be allocated on the day based on availability.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). “These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

Duncan Campbell discusses his current exhibition at IMMA with Dr Maeve Connolly (Lecturer, IADT).

Duncan Campbell was born in Dublin in 1972, he studied at NCAD before moving to Belfast to complete a BA in Fine Art at the University of Ulster in 1996. Campbell moved to Glasgow to undertake the MFA at Glasgow School of Art in 1998 and is now based in Glasgow.

Another protest against Water Charges takes place on Saturday. Meeting points are Heuston Station and Connolly Station and a march along the Liffey (on both sides) will follow. It is not clear what will happen when all participants reach O’Connell Bridge, because the organisers point out that there will be “no stage, no speeches and no concert”.

On Saturday and Sunday (14:30-16:30), The Ark in Temple Bar is inviting families to an Uilleann Pipes Demonstration with Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the Society of Uilleann Pipers. This is a Drop-In activity.

Join pipe makers and players and see how Uilleann Pipes are made – starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood. Learn about the craft of making these instruments, their fascinating history and watch pipe reeds being made live in teh Ark. You can even have a go at playing a set of pipes making some fun and musical sounds with them and you can ask the pipers lots of questions.

Admission is free and places will be allocated on the day.

The Progressince Film Club invites to the screening of a documentary about “degrowth,” sustainability and self-sufficiency in response to consumerism and the recession.

“It features case studies of people from various parts of Italy who have forsaken the commercial life in cities to live in rural communities and also also looks at examples of city-dwellers trying to achieve more sustainable life-styles. The film accompanies them in their new daily lives, while interviews with experts such as economists help make sense of the decisions that have been made.”

A 5 minute short film about mental health will precede the main film screening.

Admission is free and donations are welcome.

The Beerhouse is inviting to the first beerfest in 2015. From Thursday 29 Jan until Sunday 08 Feb, they will have live bands, beer sampling and other special events, night after night. Admission is free.

The focus is on guest brewers and on sampling their products.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet in Clontarf on the seafront car park, on Clontarf Road, opposite the Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with about 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature the Polish “Sepia Ensemble”, which will play works from Irish and Polish composers.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The illustrated talk “Customs and Festivals of the Irish Calendar with a focus on St. Brigid’s Day” with Clodagh Doyle (curator of the Irish Folklife Collections) explores and celebrates the customs of the first day of February. Select objects from the Irish Folklife Collection are presented.

Admission is free to this talk for adults and no booking is required. Places are allocated on a first-come basis 15 minutes before talk starts.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

At the next monthly meeting of the Humanist Association, Moninne Griffith will talk about Marriage Equality. The presentation will give a brief history of what Marriage Equality is, why it matters, and address some of the concerns that people have about it. It will also look at where we are at now and what’s in store in the lead up to the referendum in Spring 2015. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions.

It is bad news that this will be the very last Sunday Roast! After today there won’t be any Sunday Roasts anymore.

If you want to enjoy the night one last time where a great line up is made even better by free roast potatoes, you have to get yourself to the Mercantile by 20:00 on Sunday.

The line-up for this Sunday Roast is …. top secret! But I’d say after 14 years, the guys around Kieron will make this last one memorable, so it should be a good line-up (no pressure!!! ;-) ).

The good news? Well, since the guys who ran the event are much too young to retire, we hopefully will see more from them in a different format.

Every Sunday this singer-songwriter night takes place in the Bleeding Horse in Camden St. from 8.30pm. It is an Open mic night and performers can just turn up and put their name on the list for that night.

Every Sunday (except at Bank Holiday weekends), the Ragtime, Roots and Country Blues Band “Cool Hand Dukes” play in the Porterhouse near Grafton Street.

The Dublin Blues Cartel will be in Whelan’s again and will perform mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Admission is free.

A whole range of pubs in Dublin will show the American Football Super Bowl this year, Some years ago, there were only two or three and I remember that one of them even kicked out their guests beause the game ran later than they had expected! This year the list of pubs showing it is as long as your arm. Most places don’t charge for admission and if a pub wants to charge you for admission make sure that you check that they provide adequate food or drink for free as part of the deal.

The game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks will start at 23:30 and will be finished up to 4 hours later.

“Stop. Breathe. Flourish – Practical tips for everyday wellbeing” is a workshop in Pembroke Library on Tues 03 Feb and Drumcondra Library on Thurs 12 Feb.

The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) continues to bring you Dublin Green Drinks on the first Tuesday of every month. Green Drinks is a monthly event in 661 cities around the world to bring people with an interest in green issues together. At this month’s Dublin event, the topic is “The Mysterious Sea Trout” and it will be explained to you how the Sea Trout reached Ireland more than 10,000 years ago and how the Sea Trout is related to the freshwater Trout.

This seminar, organised by the Irish Society for Archives and St Patrick’s Cathedral, is entitled “Hidden Pages from Word War I” and explores through five talk, previously unknown archival sources on soldiers & civilians. Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

“A Leap in the Dark – Music and the First World War” is a piano recital by Italian composer and pianist Cosimo Leonardo Colazzo.

The Comhlamh First Wednesday Debate is back and this time the topic is “Water Wars: From El Alto to Edenmore”.

From Bolivia to Ireland, the struggle to ensure that water is kept in public hands has sparked mass protest movements, centred on resistance from local communities. This talk will draw on the experience of one community’s struggle in the Global South (El Alto, Bolivia) and relate it to the Irish movement against water charges.

The evening will start with the film screening of the documentary “Water Rising” which focuses on the struggle against water privatisation in Bolivia. This will be followed by a panel discussion.

Comhlámh is an organisation of development workers, volunteers and activists who work together to achieve a just and equitable world.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The Beerhouse is inviting to the first beerfest in 2015. From Thursday 29 Jan until Sunday 08 Feb, they will have live bands, beer sampling and other special events, night after night. Admission is free.

ActionAid and AkiDwA will host a free screening of the documentary “A Handful of Ash” to mark International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM (Female Gen ital Mutilation) on Friday. The screening will be followed by a short panel discussion.

AkiDwA will also launch the first Information Guide for Education Professionals in Ireland on FGM on that evening.

In 2010 Kurdish film director Nabaz Ahmad together with Shara Amin, travelled through Kurdistan to record “A Handful of Ash”, a documentary about FGM in the region. The film approaches the subject respectfully and carefully through different women’s testimonials. Shortly after watching the documentary, the Kurdish parliament outlawed the practice. Since then, the number of girls being mutilated in Kurdistan has fallen by over 60%, an incredible success.

Ex-members of Scientology speak out against the organisations fraud and abuse at the “Scientology: Enough is Enough” conference in Filmbase. The event takes place on Friday from 18:30 and continues on Saturday (07 Feb) at 12:00. A whole range of ex-Scientologists who were once in influential positions will share their experiences.
