A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

Come to the Curiosity Lab, a hands on adventure in science, play & curious technology for the whole family (Age 5+).

There will be robotic heads, snap together electronics, colourbots, marble runs and lots of Lego.

Admission is free, but booking is required. The sessions take place on Saturday at 11:00+12:30+14:30+16:00 and on Sunday at 12:30+14:30+16:00 and at the time of writing this, there were still tickets available (with the exception of the 16:00 slot on Sunday.)

The Dublin Art Book Fair will take place in the Temple Bar Gallery & Studios on Sat (11:00-18:00) and Sun (13:00-18:00). In addition to the book fair, there will be talks, artists readings and workshops.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

St. Mary’s Garden is a community project run by volunteers in and around the Mary’s Abbey area with the help of the Dublin City Council. Originally a derelict and rundown space, the garden is now an oasis of wild flowers and plants interspersed with design pieces and seating areas made from recycled materials from the local fruit markets.

It’ll be open for visiotrs from 12:00 to 13:00 on Saturday. Everyone’s invited to come and spend some time in the garden or even to help out with the planting of flowers and plants.

Unfortunately I am not exactly sure where the garden is, but hopefully locals in the area between Capel Street and the Fruit Market will be able to point you in the right direction.

A reading of Nobel Prize winner Juan Ramón Jiménez’ book “Platero y yo” for children.

Dr. Niamh Shaw will bring her lively discussion and show “My Place in Space2 to the Smock Alley Theatre for the Festival of Curiosity. (Suitable for Age 5+)

Ciudad Furor is a Festival focusing on Urban Space. It is co-organised by the Latin America Solidarity Centre (Ireland) and CinemaAttic Productions CIC, and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

There will be screenings from Latin America and Spain, seminars, workshops and roundtables discussions. The aim is to reflect on the urban fabric of cities in Ireland and Latin America and to explore local grassroots initiatives which reconfigure public spaces for cultural, economic or social use.

Science Week 2014 takes place from 09-16 November. There are about 460 events all over Ireland and the main target group are children and teenagers. Approx. 160 events are in Dublin, 80 of them are free events and 30 are free events in Dublin for adults and families. A good few of the events require pre-booking (and some are booked out already).

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

Come to the Natural History Museum during Science Week (09-16 Nov) and try on one of six helmets that will give you the vision of different animals, a hammerhead shark, or a horse, or a giraffe, or a chameleon and let you see how they see. These unique helmets created by artists Cleary Connolly will be on display for one week only.

IWT Dublin branch is inviting to a Birdwatching event for beginners at Broadmeadow Estuary, Swords.

You will be guided by specialist Sean Hogan and learn how to identify the various winter feeding birds that come to Ireland to over-winter in our mild climate. He will show you what optics to use and when is best to see them.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.

There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

“Made by Hand” or “Hecho a manos” is a new Sunday weekly market in Viva, Portobello with most things made by hand and some vintage clothing and curiosities too. Admission is free.

An indoor market in Coolock with over 40 traders with a wide range of goods and a café on site as well.

Physics in the Gardens is a family event that is part of Science Week.

The Institute of Physics and the Irish Science on Stage team demonstrate Archimedes Law of Forces shown through tug of war, Bernoulli’s Law for Fluid Flow with giant windbags, Faraday’s Law of Induction shown with a simple motor, vortex blower, musical straws, windmills and rockets, and much more. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. ’Apocalypse’ is a five-part French television series set during World War I. It uses archive footage to tell the story of everyday life of civilians behind the lines and the war in the trenches in northern France. It also examines the lesser-known fronts of Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Palestine and the Arabian deserts where millions of soldiers from the five continents died or got injured.

The series is screened in English. Two episodes will be shown (each 60 min): Episode 1 Fury: June-August 1914 and Episode 2 Fear: August 1914 – May 1915.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Dermot Bannon, the host of RTE’s Room to Improve series, signs his new book “Love Your Home” in Dubray Books. Admission is free.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

Saucy Sundays is a weekly free live music afternoon and evening in the Grand Social. The line-up and links to all bands/performers are available via the Saucy Sundays Facebook Page (see link below).

Ciudad Furor is a Festival focusing on Urban Space. It is co-organised by the Latin America Solidarity Centre (Ireland) and CinemaAttic Productions CIC, and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

There will be screenings from Latin America and Spain, seminars, workshops and roundtables discussions. The aim is to reflect on the urban fabric of cities in Ireland and Latin America and to explore local grassroots initiatives which reconfigure public spaces for cultural, economic or social use.

Commemorations of the Centenary of the Great War are taking place everywhere. But why do they vary from country to country? And are they adequate for portraying the real nature of a war that was global rather than national?

Prof John Horne (Director of the Centre for War Studies, Department of History, Trinity College) will address these questions and debate them with the audience. Admission is free. The talk is in French, Q&A is in English and French.

“Professor Claire Connolly, of University College Cork will deliver this year’s lecture discussing how Maria Edgeworth helps us to recover the textured history of the Union, shaped by travels on sea, road and rail. Maria Edgeworth undertook this arduous and uncomfortable journey from her family home in Edgeworthstown in County Longford to Holyhead in North Wales, on to London via Wales and the Marches regularly throughout her lifetime. This talk will trace its meanings within her life and letters.”

The lecture is by the Society for the Study of Nineteenth-Century Ireland.

Javier Limón (Spanish Composer, guitarist, producer and professor) will talk about many of the aspects that directly and indirectly affect music today.

With the song as starting point and as the most extended musical form, the session will go through the different creative stages a song experiences until it reaches the audience. The class is directed to composers, performers, producers, sound engineers, students and professionals in the music industry.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

For Science Week, Eamonn P Kelly, former Keeper of Irish Antiquities will give a special lunchtime talk about the Museum’s Bog Bodies Project. He will discuss recent discoveries in the archaeological and forensic investigation of Ireland’s Iron Age bog bodies and what this information reveals about the lives of our ancient ancestors.

OpenHere is a 3-day festival and conference where online practices (e.g. sharing, peer-production and open source) meet real world material economies. The program brings together researchers, artists, engineers and activists to critically engage alternative economic models and digital currencies, open source hardware and ecology and new forms of peer production and sharing happening at the intersection of digital and real world spaces. Sessions include talks, panel discussions, workshops and screenings.

Friday, is largely focused on alternative currencies and forms of exchange. The second day, Saturday, focuses on open hardware and open source ecology. The third day, Sunday, draws these concepts together with a focus on share economies, where open source and material economies collide.

The weekly European Folk Dance Workshop/Session takes place in the Tap Bar every Friday.

The dances are French, Greek, Italian, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese folk and traditional dances and everybody interested to join in or to learn is welcome. Admission is free, but donations (suggested: EUR 3) are very welcome

“Electric Fridays with DUB” is a weekly gig/open mic night in the basement of The International Bar. Admission is free.

Musicians, artists, bands who want to play a 25 min set should contact the organisers via the Facebook page below. A PA and some equipment is available.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live and the DJs Tommy Rash and Fukszy are on the decks until late. Admission is free.

The Mojo Witnesses (Blues and Classic Rock) are playing their 50th Gig in Mother Reilly’s. Admission is free.
