Hi all!
Thanks for your understanding last week. It was a mad Friday night and Saturday morning until the Dublin Event Guide was finally finished, This week things went a little smoother. Thank goodness. :-)
[ad]
If you are a regular or irregular user of the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page, you probably (or hopefully) saw that we are trying to bring the reach of the daily event reminders to a new high. An interesting experience and I am explaining a little more about that in today’s This is Odd! section. Have a look if you are interested in Social Media in General and in the success of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) in particular.
And if the latter is the case and you are with me on the goal of making the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) as big as possible, then you will definitely understand and support these pleas:
The Sponsorship I was able to get helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 53,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good brings you a song, performed by the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir. Some of you might know that I am looking after the technical needs of the choir and do the sound engineering at our weekly “gig” in Gardiner Street Church. This Saturday (22 Nov) we will be in the Olympia Theatre for our 15th birthday, so I thought it is fitting to use a Feel Good Slot from our song list.
“Hard Road to Travel” by Jimmy Cliff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGjG_LMPRq4
At first that song “A Hard Road to Travel” doesn’t sound very much like a happy song. It is full of duress and pain and hardship, but the important statement is that “My mind’s made up, I’ll never stop…” So he has a good reason to travel that hard road.
If you have tough times in life but your mind is made up, you will never stop and you will find a way through, then this is a song that might be for you too.
By the way, a very small number of tickets is still available for the gig tonight (Sat) at 20:00, if you don’t want to miss out, check it on Ticketmaster now.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Anita W, Bairbre E, Carija I, Katarzyna C, Elaine K, Adriano GG, Majella M, Eoin P, Catherine P, Arthur D, Elizabeth F and Mary C supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
It is a very quiet week, but there are a few Crafts and Christmas Markets already, so have a look at them. Next weekend will be busy. Time to gather energy this weekend for that. :-)

BUY FROM AMAZON VIA THIS LINK TO HELP THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE
Postage to Ireland is free for most orders if you buy for more than GBP 25! And with every order via this link, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) gets a small commission:

Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Docklands Christmas Market CANCELLED
To make sure that everyone sees this, I will leave it here for another week:
With the new Christmas Market for Dublin around St. Stephen’s Green, the location of the market for the last 8 years got a raw deal and the Christmas Market at George’s Dock (next to the CHQ Building) was cancelled.
It doesn’t help for event diversity in Dublin that both the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and the Dublin Docklands Authority have/will be closed down and all responsibilities will be handed back to Dublin City. Consequently Dublin City is not overly interested in competing Christmas Markets.

Survey about Restaurant Deals through Deal Websites
Patrick Cumiskey, Dublin Event Guide Sponsor through KravMagaIreland.com and a friend of mine is doing some research for a MBA thesis and he needs your help. His thesis deals with the impact Deals Websites have on Restaurant business and he has compiled a survey with a few simple questions.
Could you go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/WP67WGR and give him a hand by filling in the questionnaire?
In addition to his and my thanks for your help, he also runs a prize draw among all people who help. You can win a Three Course Meal for Two in Bloom Brasserie a restaurant in Ballsbridge that is one of the highest Tripadvisor-ranked restaurants in Dublin.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Solus – Born 2 Win – Culture Box
20 – 28 Nov
Culture Box, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Street Artist Solus is inviting to his second Irish solo Exhibition entitled “Born To Win”.
It is a tale of “Triumph over Tragedy”, overcoming adversities and a coming of age suggesting a new found confidence and growing up and growing into those once seemingly enormous gloves as depicted in some of his works and street pieces.
Having returned home to Dublin after a successful summer in New York and Toronto, Solus has returned with a fresh perspective and a new desire to get back into the studio painting.
There are 20 paintings in the new exhibition and it will be on show in the Culture Box from 20 Nov for just one week.

A Visual Odyssey Into Invisible Worlds
09 – 30 November
National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
This exhibition by Karl Gaff takes you on a visual odyssey to explore the richness, complexity and the sheer beauty of places far beyond the limits of human vision. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to enter the micro to nanoscopic realms of nature and conduct a type of photography called ‘micrography’.
Explore treacherous mountain ranges on a single grain of pollen, probe the steep valleys, ridges and rolling hills on the petal of a flower, venture through jungles of high rising spikes emerging from the surface of a leaf and much more.
The exhibition is open daily in the visitor centre.

Studies on Shivering
21 Nov – 24 Jan
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin 2
“Studies on Shivering” is a part of a wider project by the artist Damir O?ko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, “TK”, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of O?ko’s central concerns.
“Studies on Shivering” combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.
Admission to the exhibition is free

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 23 Nov

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Cosmic Microwave Background – Lecture
20:00, Mon 24 Nov
Ely House, 8 Ely Place, Dublin 2
“The Cosmic Microwave Background: New Views of the Early Universe” by Dr Creidhe O’Sullivan (Department of Physics, Maynooth University) is the lecture of the Irish Astronomical Society on Monday. Admission is free.
“This is an exciting time for cosmology. Our understanding of the Universe has been transformed in the last 15 years and we now believe that while it contains only 5% ordinary matter almost two-thirds of it is made of a mysterious ‘dark energy’. The cosmic microwave background (CMB), relic radiation from the Big Bang, has been one of our most important sources of information about the early Universe and many believe that we have, for the first time, detected the signature of the gravitational waves produced by an early rapid expansion of the Universe. In this presentation Dr. O’Sullivan will talk about our current understanding of the contents and structure of the Universe as well as the origin and importance of the CMB. She will describe some of the recent results from satellite and ground-based experiments such as Planck and BICEP2.”

Traditional Performance of the Child Ballads
19:00, Wed 26 Nov
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
Following from from the 2013 research and performance project based on the Child Ballad Collection at the NLI – a collection of traditional songs collected by the American collector Francis J Child in England and Scotland between 1882 and 1898 – another series of concerts will take place from Wednesday and continuing on 03+10+17 December.
This year’s performances will feature traditional singers: Sandra Joyce, Grace Toland, Fergus Russell, Jim McFarland, Hammy Hamilton, Roisin Gaffney, Roisin White and Len Graham. Each evening a male and female will introduce and perform a selection of the Child ballads, hence the project title: Man, Woman and Child.
Although many of the songs, or variants of them, are sung in the Irish tradition, no comprehensive study or performance of the ballads had been undertaken in Ireland prior to this project. This project is devised and co-ordinated by Wexford artists, Michael Fortune and Aileen Lambert and funded by the Arts Council with support from the NLI, Bealtaine festival and the ITMA.

Vera Klute – Exhibition Launch
18:00 – 20:00, Thu 27 Nov
The Lab, 1 Foley Street, Dublin 1
The launch of the exhibition “The Grand Scheme” by Dublin based artist Vera Klute takes place on Thursday and the exhibition will continue until 10 January.
It includes kinetic sculptures, a 5m high video projection, tapestry and drawing. Themes are inspired by everyday life and utilize familiar objects and imagery.
Vera Klute’s art describes the individual within its sociological environment and the behaviour particular to groups. While playfully exploring concepts of group intelligence and individuals merging into a mass, it sees the human subject in a fine balance between herd instincts and the formal confines of social constructs such as the family, sports club or school class.
Admission to the exhibition and to the launch event are free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Facebook Page “Reach” and how Facebook decides what you should see!
If you are a Facebook User and occasionally have a look at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook page, you might have seen that a few interesting things are happening on that Page at the moment.
The background is that Facebook has fiddled numerous times with their Algorithm that decides who will be shown a specific post since November of last year and another modification has been announced for January 2015.
EVERYTIME they fiddled with the algorithm, it meant that the Page Reach has dropped for virtually all Pages on Facebook and that certainly includes the Dublin Event Guide page. From a reach of more than 26,000 people per day (on a good day), the reach has dropped to below 3,000 (on a bad day).
So despite the fact that 53,000 people have decided that they LIKE the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page, only about 5% will (after the next change in January) see the daily updates.
Why does Facebook do that? There are two reasons: One is genuine problem and the other one is driven by Facebook’s commercial interest.
The genuine problem is that we all like more pages and have more friends all the time and if Facebook tried to show us ALL the updates for Liked Pages and from our friends, we would have to spend hours and hours every day reading them. So Facebook wants to help you see the things that are really relevant and surpress the rest. The problem is that Facebook doesn’t allow us to decide what we consider as important, but instead makes ALL the decisions for us.
The commercial reasons is that Facebook needs to make money and the only way they can make money is to take it for advertisement, so it is in Facebook’s interest to get Page owners to buy advertisement from them and what better way than to reduce the reach significantly.
So two strong reasons to limit the reach!
The algorithm that decides who will see a message uses some metrics of popularity. Simple ones are “engagement” parameters: How many people LIKE a post and how many Comment on it or Share it. But even the size of Commentor’s Friends group or the frequency of Likes within the first few minutes/hours after it was posted is seemingly considered.
Based on the result Facebook decides who to and when to show it in the timeline.
After reading a good bit about it, I decided to try – with your help – something that Irish politicians called “Vote Management” years ago. It is a strategic placing/triggering of Likes and Comments. If it will be successful or not will be seen in the coming days or weeks.
Interestingly, Facebook doesn’t allow me to discuss the process on Facebook. If I wrote about LIKES or Comments in a post and if that post got a high peak of Likes or Comments, Facebook would assume that it is “Clickbait” (i.e. that I asked for the Likes) and would punish the Page, so on the Page I only talk about Ls and Cs. :-)
The strategic approach was successful and nearly trebbled the reach in the first few days, but now it is decreasing again and I have to see what we can do to bring it even further up.
So, if you can, help me and help us (well over 400 Facebook Fans of the Dublin Event Guide are already involved!) have a look at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and lend your support. Thanks!
