Hi all!
Here is your next Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), full of culture and entertainment! This week a new feature is a top event list from Eventbrite, the main Dublin Event Guide sponsor. Check the Opportunities section just after the Dublin News. I will try to rename the section but because that has to happen in the intestines of the software I use to create the weekly e-mail magazine SOME programming knowledge is needed. There was a time in my life when I was quite good at programming, but that was a long time ago. I will give it a go anyway, but for now it is still called “Opportunities”. Well, it is an opportunity to find even more free events, so the label is not completely wrong.
Another thing to share with you: I have been asked to give a guest lecture to 4th year BCommerce students in UCD about the Dublin Event Guide, so I will mention you next week. I hope that’s ok with you. ;-)
And my regular appeal: Your support and help is needed and MUCH appreciated, but donations AND new subscriptions have dropped a good bit over the last 3-4 weeks, so if you can help, please do:
Sponsorship, like the one from Eventbrite helps hugely, but that doesn’t mean that no additional funds are required. So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 52,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good slot is another quote (I found it somewhile back on Facebook, but it was not attributed to anyone.) and it is a good one:
Giving up on a goal because of a setback is like slashing your other 3 tires because you got a flat.
There will always be hurdles! Sometimes to redirect us because we are going the wrong way, other times just in the form of a speed bump to slow us down a bit. But as long as your goals are achievable, realistic and ecological (do not harm anybody), don’t give up on them. Feel free to change your goals if and when required, but once you have decided that you definitely want to get there, GET THERE!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Aine Ni L and Fiona O’R supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
My first choice event this week is definitely Open House! It is completely different than Culture Night, but to a degree I would compare the two. Open House is a Culture Night for people that are interested in Architecture. But you don’t have to be an architect to appreciate the buildings around us!! The great thing is that the guides in the different sites all make their explanations interesting for everyone. So, pick at least one building and then see if you like it! I have a long list made and know already that I won’t be able to go to all the buildings I would like to go. ;-) ….very much like Culture Night! ;-)
What else this week? Well, if you have children, don’t miss the Elephant Trail on Saturday and Sunday. It is not too long or complicated, but it is a great learning opportunity and Treasure Hunts are always lots of fun.
If you like arts or languages, you have the Kilmainham Arts Festival with a few free events and the Italian Language Week and also the Irish, Spanish and Latin American Literary Festival. Maybe that’s something for you.
Next week the Bram Stoker Festival takes place, but unfortuantely most of the free events that need tickets are already booked out.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

And it is also available online: www.architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse (and in Totally Dublin Magazines)

Sooooo, here is the change for this section: The plan is to change its use from “Opportunities” to a section that will bring you the best events that Eventbrite, the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), promotes. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but sponsors have some additional liberties and if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well. (It will be properly tagged!)
With the change of use of this area, I will also see if I can change the title of it, but I have long left the field of programming, so I will see what I can do. Which brings me to a question I wanted to ask you anyway: Are there any Cake PHP programmers in the house? Let me know if you are!
EVENTBRITE’S FREE EVENT PICKS FOR THE WEEK:
This Saturday, (re)discover an area in Dublin that has gradually but dramatically transformed in the last 80 years: Palla Projects/Studios show Anne Maree Barry’s film Missing Green, a poetic journey through Cork Street in Dublin, followed by a walking tour of the film’s locations with Anne Maree Barry and architect Gerry Cahill. Grab your free ticket here.
On Tuesday, as part of DCU’s 8×8 festival, professional photographer Chris de Bode teaches a free photography workshop in DCU about how photographers capture social change and how to do this in an ethical way. Secure your place here.
Next Thursday is your chance to prep your children for a techy future: CoderDojo, the global network of volunteer-led, independent, community based programming clubs for young people organises a Dojo in Marian College on Lansdowne Road in Ballsbridge, next to the Aviva Stadium. Register here (it’s free).

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Open House Dublin 2014
11:00 – 17:00, Sat 18 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
“Open House Dublin 2014” will take place this weekend! It is a really great festival that gives us an opportunity to visit buildings that are normally not accessible and to learn a bit more about the architecture of these buildings.
In previous years I visited Liberty Hall and Busaras, two of the buildings in Dublin that are considered by many to be “ugly”. But when you hear what the architects had intended and why the buildings now looks totally different than originally anticipated (particularly Liberty Hall), you will see these buildings in a new light and you might even appreciate them.
Over 100 buildings will open their doors on Saturday and/or Sunday and you should plan ahead where you want to go.
A very small selection of the high-profile buildings I would recommend:
+ Criminal Courts of Justice (Sat)
+ Central Bank of Ireland (Sat)
+ Iveagh House (Dept. of Foreign Affairs) (Sat)
+ Liberty Hall (Sat+Sun)
+ Commissioners of Irish Lights (Sun)
+ Convention Centre Dublin (Sun)
Admission is free, but some buildings needed pre-booking and tickets were allcoated by lottery, but MANY buildings can be visited on a first come first served basis. Be prepared to queue!

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 19 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Galileo Galilei’s Italian – Lecture

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“Messages from the stars: on translating Galileo’s Italian” is a lecture by Mark Davie (University of Exeter) during the 14th Italian Language week (XIV Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo).
“In 1610 Galileo published an account of his astronomical observations with the newly invented telescope, in a short book entitled Sidereus nuncius (‘message from the stars’). Written in Latin, the international language of scholarship, the book was an immediate best-seller and established Galileo’s reputation in the forefront of European thinkers.Mark Davie’s presentation will examine Galileo’s reasons for abandoning Latin in favour of the vernacular, the qualities he aimed to cultivate in his Italian writing and the challenges his prose presents to a translator into modern English.”

Bram Stoker Festival
10:00, Fri 24 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The Bram Stoker Festival took the legacy of Dublin horror novelist Bram Stoker and his gothic novel ‘Dracula’ as inspiration for a whole range of events from large-scale spectacles including a gothic ball, to small performances in unusual spaces, along with a whole range of film and literary events. A good few events were free, but it seems ALL the free events for Friday 24th are sold out now and only tickets for non-free events remain. See the ticket situation here: www.entertainment.ie/tickets/bramstokerfestival/5045.htm
The festival club on Friday is in Alfie Byrne’s in the Conrad Hotel and tickets are not required for this free event, so you can still go to it and enjoy the spooky atmosphere.
The full schedule of events is here: www.bramstokerfestival.com/events/ and you will see that there are more events taking place next weekend on Saturday and Sunday. I will include these events in the next Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but you might want to check already what is happening, just in case more free events need booking and will sell out.
One event I would have entered (but I will be away next weekend) is the VampWire, a zip wire experience on Wolf Tone Square. Tickets are allocated on a lottery basis and you can enter via the link in the very bottom row of the events at www.bramstokerfestival.com/events/ (Lottery entries are only possible until the evening of 19 Oct)

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
The Vatican and Language
The Vatican is one of the world organisations that probably depends most on specific language. It doesn’t use English as common language, but uses Italian (and Latin) and needs lots of translators to make their opinions internationally accessible. And because words can have sooo many meanings, you would expect that they double and triple-check every translation.
By its design, structure and history, the Catholic Church will always be lagging behind public opinion and it is a little bit like your great-grandmother telling you what is right and wrong: She was possibly right in her time, but time has moved on since and the world and many “rights” and “wrongs” have changed. (My grandmother and her sisters were not allowed to say a single word at the dinner table or there would be punishment. Nowadays parents are (or would be) ecstatic if their kids communicate with them at the dinner table.) But we would still expect adjustment from the Catholic Church and this is independent from our opinion about that organisation.
The current pope seems to be prepared to support a bit of catching up and many (followers and non-followers) think it good and also about time.
The “Synod on the Family”, a council that is made up of bishops as is discussing the Catholic Church’s rules on family matters surprised the world by publishing an unusually tolerant document on Monday. The LGBT community and divorced and remarried people were more INcluded than ever before. Rightly so, most would say, but for the Catholic Church this is a big struggle and on Thursday major backtracking went on: The Vatican released a new document that was a “revised” translation and weakened the inclusion of these two groups again.
Oddly ONLY the English translation was changed. And oddly it was changed in a way that is now not congruent anymore with the Italian words anymore according to the Italian “Hazon-Garzanti” dictionary. It’s a pity that the Vatican backtracked, but there seems to be changes happening and that is a good sign – even if it is flippin’ slow.
Oh, another odd thing: Since the bible was not written in Italian, can we be certain that they got the translations right there?
[The answer is most likely: NO! A cousin of mine who once studied Theology and from feminist point of view re-translated passages of the bible with a group of other students that had all studied Hebrew to a great degree. They found out that the translations the Catholic Church uses today is only correct if you have a VERY male-focused view of the world, if your view was more open-minded or female-focused, the translation would be significantly different.]

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
