Dublin Event Guide 379: BlueFire Street Fest, People’s Art, Climate Change Picnic, Nepal Day, Oktoberfest

A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

Sports History Ireland was set up in UCD in 2005 to promote the study of the history of sport in Ireland and a yearly public conference takes place on Saturday 20 September in St Patrick’s College Drumcondra. The event is free and open to everyone.

The nine sessions around themes on Irish and international sport are:

+ Sports, Politics and Identity in Irish sport
+ Sport, Masc ulinity and Conflict in the 20th Century

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

This event is not free and while you can cheer on the participants, it is not the most sociable/fun event. This Half Marathon is mainly a preparation for the full Dublin City Marathon at the end of October and it is part of a whole series of preparational runs. Start is at 10:00 on Chesterfield Avenue.

So why does it get mentioned here? Because Farmleigh Estate is closed from 10:00-12:00 on Saturday.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

Celebrating the work of eight ceramic artists who have worked on the Design & Craft Council of Ireland’s primary schools CRAFTed programme, come with your kids to The Ark to discover how artists come up with their ideas.

Make|Shape leads playfully through techniques, processes and explorations of clay and provides artists, children and teachers with the unique opportunity to share skills and ideas, and collaborate on new projects.

Join The Ark’s investigation of clay, from rolling and shaping, marking and making to glazing and firing. Then roll up your sleeves and get making yourself. A hands-on experience perfectly made for kids.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

The Ranelagh Arts Festival takes place from 12-28 September. Lots of events will take place and a good few of them are free.

Sculpture in Context is a brilliant exhibition in the Botanic Gardens from Thurs 04 Sept – Fri 17 Oct and it is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition.

Every year a panel of selectors chooses sculptures from established and from upcoming artists and they will then be expertly placed in the garden setting of the Botanic Gardens and it makes a visit to the Botanic Gardens even more interesting then at other times.

Admission is free and I strongly recommend Sculpture in Context!

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

“Who Dares Wins” is only for the bravest. Come along and take up the challenge of eating weird and yucky things found growing or crawling from the woodland floor.

Six times this year the “People’s Art 2014″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green. If you want to exhibit at one of the events in the future, check the website for cost and conditions. Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free.

Specific start and end times are not defined, but exhibition space has to be occupied by 11:00, so 11:00 is the latest start time. The event runs from Friday until Sunday, but Sat+Sun will most likely be the main days.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The BlueFire Street Fest is a free arts and music festival on Smithfield Plaza. It is suitable for all ages and nationalities.

On the Main Stage you can listen to top Dublin Bands:
Mutefish, Dublin Afrobeat Ensemble, North Strand Kontra Band, Justine Nantale, Gypsy Rebel Rabble, Manden Express, Tig Linn, Markas Carcas (Mark Flynn), Aztec Jackal and Leading Armies.

There are workshops for
African Drum and Dance by West African Percussion and Dance, Ireland, Circus tricks by Dublin Community Circus, Creative writing by Big Smoke Writing Factory, Tai Chi, Trade School, Djembe drumming by Drum Nature and more.

A Live Graffiti Jam will take place:
Graffiti artists will be creating street art throughout the day of the festival, drop by and watch the paint come to life.

VitalTalks:
Based on the popular concept of TedTalks, #VitalTalks gives a platform for young people to talk about their experiences, achievements and challenges in today’s Ireland. Dermot Whelan, from Today FM, will be opening the very first #VitalTalks from 13:00 in Smithfield Square.

The website at bluefiredublin.ie/ lists the artists/performers and provides lots of other interesting information. A schedule/timetable, however, is unfortuantely not there and is definitely missing. Maybe it will still be posted in the next few days.

It is a unique and multifacetted festival that definitely deserves your support! I will be there and I hope you can make it too!

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Admission is free, but after 22:00 an odd wristband system kicks in whereby you have to buy a wristband for EUR 6 that gives you a EUR 5 food voucher (and 1 Euro goes to charity). Allegedly licensing rules force them to do that, but I never had to get a wristband in a pub to ensure that I have something to eat when I am there.

I get my yearly fix of Bavarian food at the Oktoberfest. The Schweinshaxn (pigs trotter) is a must for me, but just once a year. ;-)

The Science Gallery Summer Exhibition “Strange Weather: Forecasts from te Future” has opened on 18 July and will run until 05 October.

The exhibition explores how we understand, adapt to and control the changing weather and shows also a lot educational and even quirky bits around weather: A Raindrop hovering in mid-air, a Tornado Diverter, a Cloud Collector, Weather Models, a machine making house shaped clouds and an archive of old events from around the world that were (or are) impacted by weather and of new events emerging because of weather.

There are 26 exhibits and – like all Science Gallery exhibitions -, it is a really interesting exhibition. Well worth a visit with the whole family.

You can even be a TV weather man/woman in a professional studio set-up! An interesting experience!

The next Let’s Talk & Walk Historical Walk will take place on the North Side on Saturday.

This Historic Walk with Pat Liddy will take in some of the oldest Streets on the North side of the city including Stoneybatter, Brunswick St, North King St. entering St. Michan`s Church on Halston Street examining its historical significance and also passing the site where Kevin Barry was arrested. There will be complimentary Tea / Coffee in the M.A.C.R.O. Community Centre.

Meeting point is the Stoneybatter Monument, but I have to admit that I have NO clue where that might be. I hope you know or find someone (in Stoneybatter?) you can ask!

A free dance performance by Aoife McAtamney takes place in the RHA Gallery. The event is part of the Fringe Festival, but doesn’t require a ticket.

Song Book is a music night that is part of the BlueFire Street Fest and it will focus in the art of songwriting and the integration of cultures in Ireland.

The Brocante Market will take place on Sunday. It is a collection of antiques, furniture, vintage jewellery, collectables and curiosities from the past and present, second-hand, refurbished, antique and hand-crafted stuff for your house and garden.

If you are an interior designer or just have and eye for style and are looking for a special piece or maybe a bargain then this is the market for you. The market is held every 3rd Sunday of the month.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

To celebrate the International Day of PEace, a Peace Party will take place in the Grand Social with Live Music, Film and videos. It starts at 16:00 with a screening of the documentary “Peacemakers” and from 18:30 there will be videos and live bands.

At the talk “Remembering the Reformation: Challenges of the 2017 Centenary”, Margot Käßmann talks about the Reformation and Politics.

The role of religion in German and Irish society is subject of a series of events during the following weeks and months. The first of these is a lecture by Margot Käßmann, Ambassador for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. She was invited by the Lutheran Church in Ireland. ”.

The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Justice Catherine McGuinness and Dr. Duncan Morrow. Moderator is Prof. Linda Hogan, Vice-Provost, Trinity College Dublin.

Margot Käßmann is a theologian who has strong opinions on political questions in Germany such as its military presence in Afghanistan. From 1999 to 2009 she was Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Hanover.

A group of trainee Yoga instructors got together and they are running free Yoga classes every Tuesday evening at 19:00 in Berlin Cafe (yes, it is in the Cafe!).

(This is the same people that ran the Early Morning Yoga at 07:30 for a while. The event now has moved to the evening. )

“Education through Television: Learning from the Story of Adult Literacy” is a seminar as part of National Adult Literacy Awareness Week (23-27 Sept). The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) and the IFI will present this seminar to showcase some of the literacy content produced by NALA and the BAI over the last few years, to hear the experience of programme producers and participants, and explore new opportunities for collaboration. The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

Poet James Conway will read a selection of his poetry . He will be accompanied by two traditional Irish musicians, Marion Kerrigan on fiddle and Michael Thurlow on guitar.

2014 is the centenary of the birth of the American poet John Berryman who once spent one year in Dublin.

On Wednesday a reading from “Berryman’s Fate: A Centenary Celebration in Verse” edited by Philip Coleman and published by Arlen House will take place. Berryman’s Fate has contributions from over 50 contemporary poets and this reading will include many of them.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“Connemara and Elsewhere” – A conversation with Tim Robinson, John Elder and Nicolas Fève, chaired by Vincent Woods.

To launch the publication of “Connemara and Elsewhere”, an informal evening of conversation with the authors will take place.

“About the book: This photographic essay by Nicolas Fève is a response to Tim Robinson’s work on Connemara. The book includes an introduction by John Elder discussing both Robinson’s work and Fève’s photographic response. The book also features three new previously unpublished essays by Tim Robinson.”

“Yes But Are We Enemies – English and Irish Poets Having Words” is an exploration of contemporary writing by six poets from Ireland and England.

“Fighting Ebola on the front line” is a talk by Dr Gabriel Fitzpatrick (Chairperson, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF)). He will talk about his recent experience in Sierra Leone working as a doctor in MSF’s Ebola Treatment Centre and as an epidemiologist travelling to remote villages to trace new cases of the disease.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The hugely popular Oktoberfest in Dublin takes place from 18 Sept – 05 Oct again. It is a German Beer Festival with Erdinger Weissbräu Beer (including alcohol-free wheat beer), lots of German Bavarian Food and authentic Bavarian music.

Opening hours are Mon-Thurs 12:00-23:30, Fri+Sat: 12:00-00:30, Sun 12:00-22:30.

The best place to experience the festival is in the Festival Tent on the platform in George’s Dock. But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues because of the severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event. Pre-booking is possible, but check the cost.

Trinity College Dublin, in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons invite to the second yearly “Discover Research Dublin” event. It is an awfully boring name, I agree, but the event sounds great: Think of a type of Culture Night that focuses on Research themes only!

On the evening of 26 Sept, you will have access to over 50 fun, interactive and free events and activities which will give you direct contact with researchers and a chance for discovery, questions and participation. The night is meant to challenge your perception about researchers and show you the creativity and innovation that exists in research across all disciplines. Activities are in four categories: Body Parts, Creativity in Research, Meet the Researchers and Living Thought/Thinking Life.

The talks and demonstrations and performances look really interesting and if you have the slightest bit of interest in research and learning, check the Dublin Research Night out.
The website lists all events, but unfortuantely not sorted by time. Instead the events are subdivided by theme or catgory and then listed in what seems to be a random order.

The Dublin History Festival from 26 Sept – 08 Oct will offer you lots of talks about historical topics. The main event will be in Dublin Castle (Printworks) on 26-28 September. There will be three talks on Friday evening and more on Saturday and Sunday. The talks on Friday are:

Nutgrove Arts Festival is an annual celebration of community arts and culture, taking place in the unique setting of Nutgrove Shopping Centre.

On Friday an Opening Ceremony with African Dance, Latvian Dance and a Corus Choir performance. Admission is free.

The Street Stories Festival will take place from Fri 26 – Sun 28 Sept in venues in Smithfield. There will be talks, live music, walking tours, stalls, films and exhibitions.

The event will start on Friday evening with a talk by David Jazay about his photographic story of inner city Dublin in the 1980s and ’90s. This will be followed by a music session in the Cobblestone.

You would like to know where the talk is taking place? Yes, me too! But I wasn’t able to find any details. Maybe it will be in the Cobblestone? And i am not even sure if the talk is free.

On Saturday there will be talks throughout the day on a whole range of subjects from the Mother and Baby homes, to Dublin in World War I, from Life in Medieval Smithfield to the Massacre in North King Street during the 1916 Rising and lots more.

On Saturday night ska/reggae band The Bionic Rats will perform in the Back Room of the Cobblestone, followed by a DJ.

Then on Sunday there will be walking tours and film screenings.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.
+ Every second Thursday N.C Lawlor, a songwriter, session player and troubadour plays a mix of country, bluegrass & blues from 19:30-21:30.
+ Every Friday (19:30-21:30) Junshi Murakami plays Irish Harp.
+ Every Saturday (19:30-21:30) Nollaig Mann plays a collection of popular and jazz classics.

“Electric Fridays with DUB” is a weekly gig/open mic night in the basement of The International Bar. Admission is free.

Helena Byrne will launch her debut album ‘Ceol’ on Friday. She will perform tracks from ‘Ceol’ and will also perform a selection of self-composed songs and classic Irish folk songs. Josh Johnston (piano) and Amy Ryan (Cello) will be joining here and there will also be some special guests. “Ceol” is a collection of her favourite Irish songs.

Left, Right & Centre will play their Blues+ Soul in Arthur’s Pub. Admission is free.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

“Ska ‘n’ Reggae” is the theme in the Dive Bar (downstairs in Turks Head) every Friday. The Bionic Rats play live and the DJs Tommy Rash and Fukszy are on the decks until late. Admission is free.
