Hi all!

Bank Holiday weekends in the middle of summer are sometimes a little disappointment. We can’t complain about the weather in recent weeks, but today it is certainly not summery and also the type of events are a little disappointing at this weekend. Probably because all event organisers expect that you should be on holidays far far away from Dublin. How wrong they are. ;-)

[ad]

Well, Dublin City comes to rescue with the Urban Fleadh and with the Sand Sculptures exhibition and the Science Gallery Weather exhibition, we still have a good few things to do. The big events are over for now and while there will be another bit of a reprise in September, August will definitely be a bit quieter.

Ohh, and if you use Twitter and get a chance go to www.twitter.com/DublinEventG and give us a FOLLOW. ;-) I started using this new Twittter account @DublinEventG and am migrating from my private account @JoergSt to the Dublin Event Guide account for event notices etc. It won’t happen immediately, but get on board and you will be in the know!

And here are my weekly appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Recently the donations dropped significantly. Maybe it is the bad times, but EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints! Please…and Thanks! :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 21,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 47,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week the Feel Good Slot comes with a video clip about some bears. You might have seen it already, it has been around for a while, but Barry R. sent it to me during the week as a suggestion for this week’s Feel Good Slot and I appreciate all the help I can get!

As far as I can remember, I never “showed” you this clip and there are two aspects to it. The first is just what it is: Three bear cubs who somehow got trapped in a dumpster (American skip) are rescued by people who have to be quite careful not to get to close to the mother bear. And it is cute (We all like baby animals. ;-) ) to see how they get out and happily stagger away.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2yvp4SZS3M

You also could see another dimension. A more metaphorical one: Did you ever get stuck in a situation where you weren’t able to get out on your own? Where you really needed help? Did you make it easy for others to help you? Or did they have to be afraid of you? If you are not stuck anymore, someone must have decided to help you no matter what!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Cathal L, Regina O’C, Justin M, Jaime M and Jef B were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. And I really appreciate the help! Thanks! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend there is one outdoors event that deserves your attention but is only for you if you like Irish Music. It is the Urban Fleadh on Wolftone Square. Apart from that – and especially if the weather continues to be wet and yucky, I would suggest that you go and see the Weather exhibition in the Science Gallery. …and whenever there is a short dry period, you have a good chance to look at the Sand Sculptures in Dublin Castle.

A little quieter than in previous weeks, but never boring!!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Sand Sculpture Exhibition – Dublin Castle

The display of massive Sand Sculptures in the Upper Courtyard is back for the 15th year. This year the theme is “Black, White & Grey” and you wonder how that theme can be realised with all-brown Sand Sculptures.

The finished sculptures are now on show until 21 August.

Supported by the OPW, the Sand Sculptures are created by Duthain Dealbh (meaning: Fleeting Sculpture) (www.duthain-dealbh.com/) and only compacted sand is used with no other added ingredients.

Admission is free.

More Dublin News next week

I had some more interesting Dublin News, but On Thursday and Friday I had some technical challenges in my day job, which meant that I was not able to work on this week’s Dublin Event Guide. This is the reason why it is extra late and also why I wasn’t able to complete the Dublin News section. I will just tell you what I found next week then. Oh, and apologies for being soo late again! It annoys me as much as it annoys you!

Dublin City Libraries Summer Children’s Programme

During July and August the Summer Programme will take place again in Dublin’s Libraries for children. There will be Theatre and Yoga, puppet shows, art, drama, music, storytelling, Viking workshops and more and all for children and families. All events are free. Booking is recommendd, though. Find a description of some of the vents with links here www.dublincity.ie/main-menu-services-recreation-culture-dublin-city-public-libraries-and-archive-events/summer-2014 and at the bottom of that page you can also see a link to download the PDF brochure.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie

19 June – 23 August

Coach House, Dublin Castle Gardens, Dame Street, Dublin 2

Ulysses Cylinders by Dale Chihuly and Seaver Leslie with Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick

Dale Chihuly’s vibrant coloured glass installations and opulent Chandeliers hang in many of the world’s most prestigious museums and public spaces including the Victoria and Albert museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Louvre in Paris.

A world premier of “Ulysses Cylinders” inspired by James Joyces’s Ulysses will come to the Coach House of Dublin Castle. This collaborative exhibition combines the alchemic artistry of Dale Chihuly with painter Seaver Leslie’s pen and ink drawings to create a unique collection of golden glass Cylinders.

Working with Leslie’s drawings on paper, artists Mace and Kirkpatrick constructed fragile glass drawings, which Chihuly’s team studio amalgamated into individual Cylinders of glass wrapped in gold leaf. Each drawing offers a visual trigger into selected narratives of Ulysses as recounted by Joyce.

Admission is free. www.dublincastle.ie/NewsEvents/Title,31395,en.htm

Chihuly will also exhibit his signature work at Solomon Fine Art (Balfe Street, Dublin 2) from 19 June – 31 July. Admission is free.

Forgotten Zine Archice

07-17 August (12:00-19:00) (Opening: 07 Aug 18:00-19:00)

Centre for Creative Practices, 15 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2

Zines are most commonly described using some or all of the following words: non-commercial, non-professional, small-circulation magazines whose creators also manage their production, publishing and distribution themselves. They are often treated as ephemera by readers and authors alike, and their chances of surviving long past their creation date are slim as a result. Initially created in 2004 out of the personal collections of just four Irish artists,

The Forgotten Zine Archive now exists as a curated collection of over two thousand zines donated by collectors and creators from all over the world. Its purpose is to protect its zines while also making them available as a resource to the wider public. Its items range in date from 1976 to 2014, and in topic from anarcho-feminism to science fiction to bus drivers.

Bank Holiday Monday

09:00, Mon 04 Aug

Dublin (various locations)

The August Bank Holiday Monday is regularly shockingly quiet. It must have to do with the fact that all event organisers assume that the whole country is on holiday!?

Some museums are closed as well (including the Science Gallery), so that leaves then what? Well you can do shopping (most shops are open during normal working hours). When you do come to the City Centre, keep in mind that some of public transport companies may run the weekend schedule.Parking on Pay & Display space is free today. But using the bus lanes, or using wheelchair parking spaces is NOT ok.

Or instead of shopping, you can hope for good weather and enjoy one of the parks in Dublin. OR you use the day to relax and recover and get ready for next week. Maybe not the worst option either!

Temple Bar Night Market

18:00 – 22:00, Thu 07 Aug

Temple Bar, Dublin 2

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

North Dublin TD: Removing “No Junk Mail” signs will kick start economy

The Dublin People free sheet published an article by Pat O’Rourke with the headline “‘No Junk Mail’ signs costing jobs, warns TD”. Interesting, I thought. Maybe that TD thinks that by not getting ads from companies people buy less and therefore there will be businesses closing.

But reading the article it amazed me how twisted the thinking was of this TD: Finian McGrath (an Independent TD), seemingly with little else to do, is of the opinion the small printing companies will have to close because of the “No Junk Mail” signs. He doesn’t care if people read the junk mail or about the people that deliver the junk mail OR about the companies that use that advertisement route, all he cares about is the printing industry. That’s odd!! And only one thing could have made it more odd: If he had said that bin men would lose their jobs due to the “No Junk Mail” signs.

Does this TD live on a different planet: “If we all do this [take the Junk Mail signs down], the whole process starts all over again, helping to keep Irish jobs going and, perhaps in some small way, we will kick start the economy again.” Wow! Now we have it! The solution to the economic problems in Ireland! Take the Junk Mail signs down!!

Worried about the fact that he is representing you in the Dail?

Could it be that all he is worried about is not being elected again because people don’t want to read the junk mail he would like to put in their letter boxes?
