A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

The PhotoIreland Street Market is a Book & Magazine fair, offering a unique opportunity for publishers and artists to present their latest publications and prints in Temple Bar. The market will run on Sat + Sun.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At “Summer Natural His-stories” Zoologist Geraldine Breen brings you on an exploration of all the wonders of the natural world on display at the Museum. Derek Landy, the author of Skulduggery Pleasant and many other books, will be in Eason’s in Swords for a book signing of “Armageddon Outta Here”.

The Dublin City Public Art Programme presents the performance of 5 new operas as pop-up operas in Dublin on 04+05 July. Wide Open Opera will run the events (music by Brian Irvine and text by John McIlduff). The operas are inspired by lives of real people in Dublin.

The performances will take place in public places on Friday and Saturday and each opera will be performed 4 times with 20 short performances in total over the two days.

The performers will sing live and will be accompanied by a specially recorded soundtrack, performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by Fergus Sheil, and one will feature a specially convened community choir.

After the first 15 performances in surprise locations, all five operas will be performed as a cycle in Dame Court, Dublin 2 at 19:00 on Saturday 05 July.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

There seem to be TWO weekly markets on Long Mile Road and both are very close to each other. One is behind Wigoders on Long Mile Road (across the road from Aldi). The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month.

There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

This year’s Teddy Bears Picnic by dlrevents will take place on Sunday.

The Teddy Bears Picnic is one of the most popular events on the dlrevents calendar and the whole family is invited to bring their bears and blankets (or children with bears and blankets!) to the Teddy Bears Picnic in Blackrock Park.

Free bear care and checkups from Doctor Ted and the Teddy Bears Hospital for minor repairs will be available. And this year, the Teddy Bears Picnic incorporates National Play Day so there will be a DJ, face painting, bouncy castles and inflatable games for all ages, entertainment on the Lake Stage, a “make & do” area and picnic facilities with goodies galore. The DLR Sports Department will also run plenty of games to try in the park.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The Dublin edition of the National Play Day will take place in Merrion Square this Sunday. Old and new games will be provided for kids, for example skipping, marbles, penalty shoot-outs, den building, sand and water. A special surprise activity will also take place.

It is a great day for kids, but luckily kids can’t read Dublin City’s announcement, cause that takes all the fun out of the Play Day:

“The theme for this year’s event is ‘Out to Play’ which is aimed at encouraging families and communities to support children and young people to play outdoors. […] This event will inspire children to use their imagination with creative elements of play on offer such as messy play, art and dress up.”

Dublin City speak and children’s games are diametrically opposite. ;-) But you can be certain that the day will be great for the kids.

The public lecture “The Legendary Lee Miller” is a talk by Antony Penrose. Admission is free and no booking required.

Presented in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition “Lee Miller in James Joyce’s Dublin” at the James Joyce Centre, Antony Penrose provides an overview on the incredible career of his mother, American photographer, Lee Miller.

“Miller began as a fashion model and freelance photographer for Condé Nast in the 1920’s and later collaborated as an artist and model with Man Ray in Paris. She travelled to Egypt in the 1930’s and, after returning to Europe, became one of the few female war correspondents during the Second World War. Miller’s work with Vogue Magazine, spanned from 1939-1953, and included covering the London Blitz, the battle of Saint Malo, the liberation of Paris and the concentration camps, Buchenwald and Dachau. It was after the war, while still working with Vogue in 1946 that Lee Miller created the images of Dublin that make up the exhibition in the James Joyce Centre.”

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. Workshops on wildlife conservation for Ages 9-12 take place in several libraries from 07-18 July with Jim MacMonagle of Dublin Zoo. The human being is the only creature which has spread to every continent on planet earth and with the explosion in population numbers is now threatening the existence of many animals in their native habitat. How can we prevent this? The talk will explore the situation and look at some of the many conservation projects which Dublin Zoo supports.

The Advocacy Initiative will host their final conference “Breaking Through – The Future of Social Justice Advocacy.”

Sports and Science combine for a fun evening celebrating the World Cup Semi-Final on 08 July.

At the event everything will be discussed. From the science behind sports equipment, stadia and injury prevention to Chi Running and the stats of World Cup 2014.

Every Tuesday a Jazz Jam Session will take place in the Grand Social and you are invited to listen or even to participate. Admission is free for musicians and audience.

Instruments are supplied (drums (no cymbals), double bass, guitar amp, bass amp, PA system) and ideas and themes will be proposed prior to the session to the musicians who join the event on Facebook (see Facebook Page below).

The Phoenix Big Band is a 16 piece band playing songs of the 1930s, 1940s and other big band arrangements and they are playing every Tuesday in the Tara Tower Hotel (since 2012!) for adult dancing. If you like to waltz, cha cha or foxtrot, come and enjoy their performance.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. Damn Fine Print and the Laya Healthcare City Spectacular (formerly World Street Performance Championship) present DAMN FINE CITY, a Screenprint Spectacular featuring artworks designed by six of Ireland’s leading illustrators.

There will be summer poitin cocktails from Glendalough Distillery, DJ’s, screen print demos from the mobile print crew and live framing by Hang Tough.

A Walking tour of the IFSC for supporters of Claiming our Future to find out “What is going on in the Irish Financial Services Sector?” is taking place. The tour will illustrate the goings on in the Irish Financial Services Centre and will be delivered by Dr Conor McCabe of UCD, author of Sins of the Father.

Claiming Our Future is a national broad based non-party-political network. It comprises individuals and organizations from a range of civil society sectors including, in particular, the community, environmental, global justice, cultural and trade union sectors.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The list of performers is not yet announced on their Facebook Page and I am not sure if it will be put up there, but check it anyway.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

The public lecture “The Merchant of Venice in the Jewish Diaspora in German, Hebrew, and Yiddish” with Dr. Dror Abend-David (University of Florida) will take place on Thurs.

The Street Performance World Championship, one of the best – if not THE best – festival in Dublin for many years and one of the reasons why the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was born, has been changed completely. Allegedly it is still there – but seemingly not as a “World Championship” anymore – at the core of the newly named “City Spectacular”. In addition there is a music stage and some other events taking place. More about all that in the next Dublin Event Guide.

The City Spectacular will run from 11-13 July in Merrion Square and there will also be a number of events in other locations in Dublin.

Relevant for you today is this: The Street Performances are starting today in Merrion Square. Sandford Parish Church in Ranelagh is inviting to Classical Music Summer Concerts from every Friday from June to September.

The next concert is David Tobin (violin) and Shirin Goudarzi-Tobin (piano)- including music by Fauré, Messiaen and de Falla.
