Hi all!

Another Bank Holiday weekend! That is certainly something to look forward to. The Dublin Event Guide is even later than in other weeks, because I had a number of significant delays in compiling it this week. I had to prioritise a few other things and that delayed me hopelessly.

[ad]

Bank holiday weeks usually have less events than normal weeks, but we did reach 180 events again this week, so there is enough to do for you. Have a look at the main, weekend-long evens and if you like Art make sure you go to Farmleigh House this weekend. Now I better hurry to get this out to you! Have a great weekend!!!

And here are two very important appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot piece is a simple quote again. It is something I came across last week and thought of all of you when I read it because I bet that a few absolutely know what is refered to:

If you want to fly, you must give up what weighs you down!

Do you want to fly? Achieve your dreams? Make near impossible things possible?

If we have established that you want to fly, then the only other thing we have to do is to establish what weighs you down. And I’d say you already have a good idea! ;-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Marie-Claire G, Siobhan M, David S and Eoin Parker were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation that will benefit ALL of you! I really appreciate their help, and I would also appreciate YOUR help!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

In the last 12 months the following wonderful people have sponsored this Dublin Event Guide: Christina M, Claire F, Peter D, Emma N, Agnes C, Flora F, Karl F, Raymond M, Rafika K, Natalija B, Nicola WN, A C, Hazel L, Amanda L, Brendan McC, Filippo G, Laura B, Lucas C, Colin B, Brendan H, Valentina B, Mark R, Jun S, Joe G, Helen G, Eoin O’B, Clodagh O’C, Aine G, Majella M, Gareth N, Pat M, Conor O’H, Torlach OC, Belinda B, Paul B, Daire McC, Tom McI, Mary B, Rita B, Kostas R, Derek L, Johan S, Sheila H, Joseph O’L, Hoai L, Elizabeth P, Hugh C, Lorraine F, Frieda K, George K, Tony B, Peter B, Seamus C, Jenny M, Tara R, Deirdre G, John F, Mark G, Orlagh O’F, Méabh C, Meav NiM, Anna P, Vera G, John R, Nicole W, Margo C, Eamonn U, Pamela McH, Joel B, Gerard Ph, Fiona F, Yvonne O’S, Gabriel K, Luis F, Claire D, Nicola F, Eimear MacH and Barry M, Kirsten D, Roisin K, Sharon C, Thomas S, Cyril M, Patricia O’N, Ju Yearn S, Clodagh C, Caitriona L, Brian O’C, Geraldine R, Aiden B, Jacinta O’B, Sophie P-L, Mairin M, Wendy C, Seamus C, Mary K, Carla B, Fiona O’R, Karen O’G, Emeline J, Noelle H, Sean N, Marta T, Aine C, Sabrina L, Brian H P, Fiona M, Bridget W, Paul M, Sarah S, Pam C, Colette C, Paul A, Brian C, Anne R, Deirdre B, Oliver M, Kostas R, Elaine K, Mark C, James E, Sarah H, Karl C, Melanie B, Donna M, Kathleen S, Arthur D, Stephen H, Karen H, Nikki D, Mark G, Margaret W, Serena F, Mark R, Zelie McG, Sean S, Caroline S, Patrick O’C, Christian K, Magdalena S, Fidelma M, Tania Z, Louise Q, Barbara Q-B, Catherine G, Tony B, Yvonne C, Mark G, Bridget W, Catherine E, Michelle M, Eoin O’S, Adeline P, Kay G, Claire F, Anto K, Sebastian B, Justin McC, Sophie P-L, David M, Mark G, Eamonn H, Sharon K, Michele M, Joseph F, Siobhann Q, Clodagh O’C, Susan B, Bill G, Joe R, Catherine O’S, Tom McM, Donald M, Martina D, Pascale N, Carol McN and Meret C, Linda T, Mark G, Cathal F, Brendan M, Mary F, Dermot N, Emma S, Fiona D, Joan S, Ana RT, Janice M, Emma L, Claudia S, Sarah H, Tobias A, Conor H, Sarah M, Barry P, Aishling B, Pietro S, Ruth G, Kate D, Joe O’D, Ivelina D, Orla P, Yasmin WK, Adrian P, Sinead D, Padraig K, Nicola R, Susan H, Erinna B, Roisin R, Clodagh H, Linda C, Laura B, Marie-Claire G, Siobhan M, David S and Eoin Parker and the Dublin Cycling Campaign (www.dublincycling.ie), www.GravitationalFX.ie (An Irish Web Design, SEO and Internet Marketing who offer affordable web design), www.FlamencoIndalo.com (A group that supports and promotes the art of Flamenco in Ireland.), www.oliviercornetgallery.com (A brand new Art Gallery in Temple Bar), www.Festivals.ie (Ireland’s festivals website, with key information on festivals in Ireland, UK and Europe), www.thepaulkanegallery.com (A great Art Gallery, on the search for a new venue), www.cfcp.ie (The Centre for Creative Practices is the the only arts centre in Ireland dedicated to connecting, integrating and promoting immigrant, experimental and emerging artists among the local arts scene and audiences). Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

The next few weekends will be very busy, so get ready for it. There will be plenty of interesting free events and this weekend it all starts.

The main events this weekend are the Bray Jazz Festival, the Phizzfest in Phibsborough and Art in Action at Farmleigh Estate. All three go for all or most of the weekend.

I will definitely go to the Farmleigh Estate event. I was there in previous years and it was really good.

On Sunday there is also the Pure Vintage Market in the Food Co-op and there is a Craft Festival in Dun Laoghaire.

I won’t go through the events during the week here. I am late sending this newsletter this week and you have an additional day off work, so with these two things coming together, I will let you look through the list to see what is good and what you like.

But there is one last one: It is not a free event, but check it out anyway. Social Life Dublin are inviting to a Hat Party on 09 May in the Odeon. Tickets are EUR 10 and by clicking on the banner below, you will find out all the relevant information!

Bealtaine Festival 2014

Every year in May, the Bealtaine Festival takes place. It was once a festival for the over 55 year olds. But has now been renamed to the festival “celebrating creativity as we age” without an age tag. Some think the removal of the age widens the appeal of the festival, others think it pushes the age up (because most 55 year olds wouldn’t see themselves as the “ageing population”.Either way, about 120,000 people will take part in Bealtaine. From dance to cinema, painting to theatre, Bealtaine showcases the talents and creativity of both first-time and professional older artists.

Each year, Age & Opportunity invites local authorities, arts centres, libraries, Active Retirement groups, care settings, community groups and clubs, associations from every part of the country to run Bealtaine events and it is a popular month-long festival with lots and lots of events: bealtaine.com/bealtaine-2014/programme/listing/Dublin

A good few events will be listed in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but you should definitely look through the programme yourself, as it will not be possible to list all events here.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Of Space and Place – Margo McNulty and Geraldine O’Reilly

11 April – 07 June (Mon-Fri 10:00-18:00, Sat: 10:00-17:00)

The LAB Gallery, Foley Street, Dublin 1

A curator did strike again:

“McNulty and O’Reilly share a common interest in subject matter derived from rural Ireland for this exhibition of prints and video. Exploring their mutual interest in history, memory and narrative in their work, their work is situated in the local. O’Reilly’s work draws on a residency at the Heinrich Boll House on Achill Island where she was struck in particular by the Deserted Village, abandoned since famine times. John F. Deane’s poem The Abandoned Village, and an excerpt from Eavan Boland’s essay Outside History, from the book, Object Lessions, appear alongside a series of photo etchings. McNulty’s work explores personal history revising her grandmother and great grandmothers house as the basis for her large scale lithographs that become microscopic portals to the past. The exhibition is accompanied by a specially commissioned essay by Prof Luke Gibbons.”

Art in Action at Farmleigh

10:30 – 17:00, Sat 03 May

Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15

Art in Action is a unique arts and crafts festival at Farmleigh House & Estate that will take place over the May bank holiday weekend. 100 working artists will demonstrate their work and skills to you over the three day festival and they also invite you to participate in a number of art classes for both adults and children.

Art in Action is running for the last 17 years and up to 30,000 visitors will come to Farmleigh House over the long weekend. In addition to the art demonstrations and classes, there will be drama, dance, music and storytelling.

I have been at Art in Action last year and it is really a great event if you are interested in arts. I didn’t do any courses, but spent a great afternoon watching artists do their work, seeing some interesting painting and sculpture exhibitions and enjoying the garden party atmosphere. You will find me there this year again! :-)

Admission to the event is free.

Bank Holiday Monday

09:00, Mon 05 May

Dublin (various locations)

Today is May Bank Holiday. Unlike in the rest of Europe, the May Bank Holiday doesn’t take place on 01 May, but instead it happens on the first Monday in May. The advantage is that it can never fall on a weekend!

As far as shops are concerned, you can assume that it is like any other Sunday. Meaning that virtually all shops are open. Pay & Display Parking enforcement is suspended, which means that you don’t have to pay in a Pay&Display parking space, but bus lanes loading bays and all other rules do NOT assume it is a Sunday, instead it is a Monday.

Some of the regular events on Sunday and on Monday might not take place because of the bank holiday. Where I knew it, I have removed the event in the listing, but I wasn’t able to check all events.

Phizzfest 2014

09:00, Mon 05 May

Phibsborough (various locations)

There will be walking tours, poetry events, events for children and on Sunday a Community Fun Day at the Royal Canal (4th lock) including Duck Race will take place and there are also talks and Trad Music at The Hut at Doyle’s Corner.

Check the programme for Saturday (www.phizzfest.ie/saturday-3rd.html), Sunday (www.phizzfest.ie/sunday-4th.html) and Monday (www.phizzfest.ie/monday-5th.html) here.

Art in Action at Farmleigh

10:30 – 17:00, Mon 05 May

For practical classes there is a fee of about EUR 8 to cover the cost of materials. Adults and children have separate classes, each under the guidance of an experienced artist. Classes last about an hour and are repeated throughout the day. Classes are booked on the day on a first-come first-served basis. In the classes you learn to make your first finished piece of art to take home.

The Farmleigh Food Market will also take place over the weekend from 10:00-17:00 every day (Sat, Sun + Mon).

“Back from the Dead: The Return of the Irish Eagle” is the topic of this month’s Green Drinks Dublin, organised by the Irish Wildlife Trust.

The plan was met with widespread public support, but also with poisonings, shootings, opposition and setbacks. After 15 years, have eagles finally returned to the Irish skies? And are they here to stay?

Ronan Hannigan, Chairman of the Golden Eagle Trust, will discuss the reintroductions he works on and how two of the species of Eagle and the Red Kite are returning to Ireland after a long absence.

Admission is free, but registration via the Facebook Page below or to dublinbranch@iwt.ie is required. The meeting takes place on the Top Floor of J.W. Sweetman’s.

Lunch Bytes – Thinking about Art and Digital Culture

13:00 – 14:30, Fri 09 May

Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8

The topic of this Lunch Bytes Discussion is “Structures and Textures: Data” and participants are Kylie Jarrett (Centre for Media Studies, NUI Maynooth); Julius von Bismarck (artist, Berlin); Rasmus Swensson (Design Studio PWR, Berlin) and others.

“Our use of digital devices, software applications, and social media platforms continually generates immense streams of data, which are automatically captured, archived, and organized in ever-expanding proprietary databases. Often without our knowledge or explicit consent, these streams are aggregated into larger sets of ‘big data’ subjected to complex algorithmic analyses (“analytics”) in order to find relevant patterns and associations that can provide insight into consumer tastes, habits, and behavior. In this way user-generated data is valorized by selling relevant information to advertisers. On the other hand, users increasingly make active use of the data they generate, utilizing various applications (such as Klout) to gain insight into their online ‘performance’ and seek ways to improve their status or reputation.”

Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below. You can find there more information about the event as well.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Patient Information Leaflet trickier than IKEA furniture

Do you occasionally need medication from the pharmacy? Prescribed medication, maybe? Do you just take it or do you first study the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with it?

I ALWAYS read that leaflet first. I want to know that the tablets that I got to get rid of a heavy infection with headache and lots of other pains have as sideeffects EXACTLY the headache and lots of other pains listed as the original illness PLUS death (In rare cases! Phew!) and anything in between. But I will look at this another time.

Today, I Just want to focus on the Patient Information Leaflet.

Did you open it (easy!) and after reading did you want to put it back in the box only to realise that it only fits if you have it folded exactly the way it came, BUT that you have NO idea how they managed to fold it like that in the first place and that you will NEVER be able to put it back in the same way as it came?

What is it about Patient Information Leaflet folding systems? Having that leaflet in your hand and trying to fold it is like trying to put the most complicated piece of IKEA furniture together WITHOUT INSTRUCTIONS! Impossible!!!!

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
