Hi all!
This week, the more than 190 events nearly broke my neck. Luckily not literally, but it was quite complex to piece them apart and it took me sooooo long that the mail is only with huge delay going out to you. So, I won’t spend much time here to tell you little stories, instead, just enjoy the Dublin Event Guide and enjoy Dublin even more.
[ad]
Check out the Giro d’Italia events, but don’t forget all the other events either!
And here are two very important appeals:
The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is looking at Change. Many of us don’t like Change too much. Ok, if the Change was winning the Lotto, maybe you could deal with it. ;-) But other Change? Well, think about it, without Change and Growth, you will stay exactly where you are now! And is that the place where you want to be?
Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong! – Mandy Hale
Embrace Change!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Mary B and Ann McP were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation that will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader! I really appreciate their help, and I would also appreciate YOUR help!
Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, the Giro d’Italia events are definitely the main events, but there are soo many and the events are so varied that it is not very easy to recommend a single one. But one thing I can say: The Giro D’Italia, i.e. the cycling race, is the least important aspect about the weekend. So you can easily miss the few seconds of the cyclists arriving and just focus on all the other events.
Apart from the Giro d’Italia events, you should definitely go to the People’s Art exhibition at St. Stephen’s Green. The Fusion Sunday Market is also taking place and is always great and there is the Harold’s Cross Community Festival with an impressive programme (including an Open Day at the Mount Jerome Crematorium. ;-) ).
Milk & Cookies Stories on Tuesday and the European Literature Night on Thursday are some good events during the week!

The Secret Garden Dublin – The real secret is revealed!
Last week I told you here about the “The Secret Garden Dublin” pop-up restaurant on Meeting House Sqaure in Temple Bar, which invited Dubliners for Lunch (EUR 10) and Dinner (EUR 20) from 05-09 May. It was hugely popular and created a big buzz and 400 lunches and 400 dinners were served and now the secret behind the secret garden was revealed:
The whole event was organised and all ingredients for the lunches and dinners were provided by ….. LIDL Ireland!
What a smart, clever, even genius marketing trick!

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?
Do you like and use the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) sometimes or even regularly?
In that case, you probably want it to continue forever, right? And you know that to achieve that, money is needed. If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.com?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.) When you click on the link and then buy, your books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Jameson Black Barrel Craft Series
18:30 – 21:00, Tue 13 May
Mabos, 8 Hanover Quay, Dublin 2
After the Mabos Warehouse had to be vacated by the Kings of Concrete crowd, Jameson took over to run a few events in it and it is a great place for the Jameson Black Barrel Craft Series events, but unfortunately this is coming to an end now and the Warehouse won’t be much longer.
The final Jameson Black Barrel Craft Series has featured four crafts people over the past year. The final event will feature screen printer Peter O’Gara of Bluefingers and you can find out more about him here www.vimeo.com/93639784
Tickets to the Jameson event are free, but the event is great, the interest is big, so between you and tickets is a draw. But you have nothing to lose, so enter here: apps.facebook.com/JamesonBlackBarrel/
In addition to a screen printing demonstration, there will be a life barrel charring demonstration (an impressive process!) and the band Corner Boys will perform. Some Jameson inspired drinks will be available as well.
I was lucky enough to get a chance to go to the previous event and it was definitely great. With a bit of luck you will make it this time.

Tourism as a Battleground of Identity in Israel/Palestine
18:15, Wed 14 May
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“‘Ordinary Palestinians’ in the ‘City of David’: Tourism as a Battleground of Identity in Israel/Palestine” with Dr David Landy (TCD) will take place.
“This lecture will investigate contested tourist discourses around the site of Silwan in Jerusalem. By examining how the tourist narratives of a specific contested site in Jerusalem represent both the site and the tourists themselves, the paper examines how tourism can serve to provide a discourse of disempowerment and even negation to those living in the destination country. Specifically the paper interrogates the power dynamics inherent in how ‘international’ activists and tourists relate to ‘local’ Palestinians.”

The Christ City Church runs a 6-weel long Intro Course and they asked me if I could let you know. The first evening was last week, but I am told that you are still very welcome to join.
“The course gives you an opportunity to ask the big questions of life, as well as explore the life Jesus offers. Each evening starts with some light refreshments, then a short talk, followed by discussion over drinks. No question is too feisty nor too simple and the course is free of charge.
Intro is facilitated by Christian groups in Dublin and led by Steve Vaughan. Everyone’s welcome. Each week has a focus for discussion – it’s great if you can come along to all the sessions but no problem to come to a single week, or a few of them.”

Hand-cut chips!?!? WTF!?
During the week, a restaurant in Dublin was promoting their meal special on Twitter and one of the features that they clearly thought was outstanding was “hand-cut chips”. Are they serious?
First of all let’s start with the literal meaning: I very much doubt that they are hand-cut! Instead, I am nearly 100% certain that somewhere a knife or other cutting implement was involved.
But even if we let them get away with that lie, now let’s look at the worth of the quality statement “hand-cut”. Do “hand-cut” chips taste better BECAUSE they are not cut with a machine? It is VERY VERY doubtful that the mechanism that controls the cutting implement will have any influence on the taste.
So what else could it be: Well, they are expected to look different. “Hand-cut” chips are expected to look chunkier than “non-hand-cut” (would they be “machine-cut”?) chips. But would it not be easy to adjust a machine in such a way that it just cuts wider and thicker chips? If such a modified machine now corrects that cosmetic difference, what remains?
Well, maybe hand-cut chips are more odd-shaped. But is it really a quality parameter if the chips are even or odd-shaped? Certainly not!
So what remains? NOTHING!!!!!
The term “Hand-cut chips” is total nonsense and anybody using it should be banned from promoting anything for life! ;-)
Yes, sure I know that the user of that nonsensical term wants to create the impression that they are more in touch with their food, that the food is made by them possibly on the premises and therefore you are meant to understand that it is fresher and of better quality. But, come on! “Hand-cut” is really not the term that we should let them get away with.
By the way, the fish they were selling with it was not “hand-caught”, or “hand-killed” or “hand-de-boned” or anything like that! Odd that!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
