Hi all!

Great news this week, when the Dublin Event Guide was mentione din the Irish Times as one of Conor Pope’s recommendations here on how to save money in the summer. And consequently our subscriber numbers here got a nice boost. A big welcome to everybody who found the Dublin Event Guide through Conor Pope’s article! It’s great having you! :-)

[ad]

We have arrived at more than 200 events this week. :-O And all are free. Amazing, isn’t it!?

And here are two very important appeals:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from Muhammed Ali and it doesn’t need any additional explanation. Muhammed Ali said:

Don’t count the days, make the days count!

Clear!? Do it! ;-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Caitriona NiL was the only wonderful person to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. A donation that will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader! I really appreciate this help, and I would also appreciate YOUR help!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week I will be at the Dockland’s Summer Festival on Saturday and maybe also on Sunday. On Sunday “Family Day” in Iveagh Gardens sounds interesting.

A new Science Gallery exhibition has started. It looks and good and bad sides of Fat and is very interesting. It will only run for 6 weeks, so don’t postpone it!

The Dublin Writers Festival has started and comes with lots of events. Quite a few are free, so watch out for them.

If you like Gospel Music, check out the (non-free) event in the National Concert Hall on Wednesday. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir (who I am involved with) is performing as a support for the amazing Blind Boys of Alabama. I will be there. :-)

Howth Express – Ticket Competition

24+25 May 2014 – 11:00-16:00
Howth, Co. Dublin

Howth has a new attraction. The new Howth Express is a unique and fun way to see the historic and charming Howth and to learn about its rich local history and culture (from Norman battles to modern Fishy tales), while meandering along the coastal roads.

The land train (named “O’Malley”) brings you from the DART Station on Harbour Road to Howth Castle & Demesne, where you can visit the National Transport Museum (www.nationaltransportmuseum.org). The tour then returns to the harbour, travelling down the middle pier with the fishing harbour to one side and Howth Yacht Clubs marina on the other.

What better way to acquaint yourself with all that Howth has to offer, the spectacular cliff paths running from Balscadden to Sutton, the old Howth Tram Lines, Historic Howth Castle & Demesne, the golf courses, angling, sailing, not to mention the many fine restaurants and pubs.

The Howth Express Tours will start and finish 300 meters from the DART station at the old Courthouse on Harbour Road, each tour will take approx. half an hour and the tours begin at 11:00 and run every 30/40 minutes until 16:00 on 7 days a week throughout the summer (Thursdays to Sundays until the end of May).

www.facebook.com/pages/The-Howth-Express/1381595975433951

Tickets can be bought on board or via 086 1806092 and they are EUR 5 for adults and EUR 3.50 for children under 12. A Family pass for 2 adults and 2 children is EUR 15.

Howth Express has generously made 10 (!!) family passes available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and if you want to win a pass, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with HOWTH in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the bode of the mail. The tickets will be valid on 24+25 May, so if you would like to go to Howth next weekend and use the Howth Express for a tour send me your competition entries. Your mail has to be with my by Tues 20 May. so hurry!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

Pigsback | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

(You can also copy these links and send them to your friends.)

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Writers Festival

The Dublin Writers Festival is back for the 16th time. This year it will run for nine days from 17-25 May.

There will be lots of great workshops, classes, discussions, talks, readings with, for and by authors and poets. The website www.dublinwritersfestival.com/ lists all events and you will see that many are not free, but they are nevertheless very interesting, so you should have a good look through the list. And when you do that, you will also find a good number of free events! I have listed all free events separately in this Dublin Event Guide, but check the programme any way, you might find somethign else that interests you.

Dublin City Soul Festival postponed!

Please note that the Dublin City Soul Festival has been postponed!!

It will now NOT take place on 24+25 May as originally planned and still indicated in some online resources, instead it will take place on 26+27 July!

If you could also tell all your friends, please that would be great. Many people know that over the last few years the Dublin City Soul Festival took place at or near the last weekend in May and they might not find out easily that it has been postponed.

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 17 May

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Family Day Festival

11:30 – 17:00, Sun 18 May

Iveagh Gardens, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2

One Family is an organisation for one-parent families in Ireland and on Sunday, One Family’s Family Day Festival takes place in Iveagh Gardens. It is inspired by the UN Day of Families (15 May).

There will be a packed programme of free entertainment, workshops, talks, information and more for all ages.

There will be a main stage with Comedian Aidan Bishop and Magician Brian Daly, a Roma children’s choir, a Nepalese Culture Group, the Young Orchestral Pops Chamber Group and singer Sinead White. In the Talking Tent there will be talks throughout the day and workshops for Yoga and acting will be provided. Games for the whole family are also in the park.

The full programme can be downloaded here www.familyday.ie/wp-content/uploads/Family-Day-Festival-Prorgamme-20141.pdf Admission is free and everybody is welcome.

In addition to the activity programme, a variety of organisations working for and with families and children in Ireland will share information about their services and will also run activities. The organisations are One Family, GLEN, Marriage Equality, Treoir, BeLong To, New Communities Partnership, ISPCC and Children’s Rights Alliance.

The Festival is to highlight of One Family’s ongoing campaign for a nationally celebrated Family Day, similar to Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, but which would include all children irrespective of their family make-up. Because we all have a Mother and a Father (maybe even more than one) I never realised that Mother’s Day or Father’s Day could be seen as a negative thing and I don’t know why a Family Day in the calender is necessary, but a Family Day like the one in Iveagh Gardens is always very welcome and it is great that One Family is running it!

FAT – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 18 May

Pint of Science Festival

19:00, Mon 19 May

Dublin (various locations)

The Pint of Science Festival is a science festival that is making four interesting science subjects more accessible by bringing 39 talks into pubs over three nights this week.

The themes are: Mind, Human Body, Physics and Technology and the pubs are The Stag’s Head, Odessa, 4 Dame Lane & Mercantile.

Great idea and really interesting talks, but there is also seriously bad news: It looks as if there are soo few places available that ALL events are booked out. Great achievement for the organisers, but they probably could fill the pubs many times over.

I am mentioning the event because I think it is a super event and I want to tell you about it. but I will only list it on Monday. It wouldn’t be fair to give false hope by listing it on all three days.

18:30 – 20:30, Thu 22 May

Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square North, Dublin 1

The Launch of “In My Own Light: A Memoir” by Raymond Deane will take place and admission is free.

In this lyrical memoir, classical composer, author and political activist Raymond Deane evokes his near idyllic childhood on Achill Island, his adolescence in Dublin, and his rapid descent into alcoholism. In an alternately humorous and horrific narrative moving swiftly from Ireland to Italy, England, Switzerland, Germany and France, Deane shows us how a lovingly protected childhood is no bulwark against disaster. While no ‘misery memoir’, Deane does show how memory can seize upon and exaggerate painful experiences to provide a convenient but spurious explanation for irrational behaviour.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Local and European Elections – Don’t fall for bogus candidates!

Posters everywhere, leaflet drops, door bells ring because candidates want to get you to secure their financial and employment future. Elections are interesting. And there is soooo much hot air around that even the outside temperatures have risen over the last few days. ;-)

There are good and bad candidates around and I will definitely not tell you who to vote on Friday (23 May) if you are allowed to vote, but I will suggest that you do use your vote if you have it.

However, please avoid voting for dubious candidates! A candidate for the European parliament will have NOTHING to do with politics in Ireland, so if any of the MEP candidates tells you he/she will use their power – once elected – to work against water charges, please please don’t vote for that candidate because he/she clearly hasn’t the slightest clue of what his/her future responsibilities will be. He/she will never ever be involved in anything hat has to with Irish water charges and any other claim is a lie. The European parliament is strongly in favour of water charges anyway and that won’t change.

And if your local election candidate tells you that he will use his/her power to achieve something that is in the realm of National Politics, then please don’t vote him/her either. City and town councils have very very limited power and big promises just shows that he/she is delusional.

Oddly there are LOTS of delusional candidates out there. Somebody should tell them the difference between local, national and European politics, so that they get at least the basics.

Ohh, and please don’t vote for any local election candidate who is not in favour of a directly elected mayor because it is time that the arrogant and ignorant city managers are shown the door and are replaced with someone who has to check with the people he represents if doing stuff makes sense.

You might have heard about the traffic changes at Customs House Quay? Exactly the same right turn ban was in place before and then was removed again. Now we are back to the same.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
