And next weekend is already Easter. This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, I will focus on just two days, because it is two busy days. More than 170 free events are taking place this week and quite a number of high-profile events are happening on Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday the Dodder Action Day and the Anarchist Bookfair and a Giro d’Italia “Dublin Bikes go pink” promo event should be considered by you.
On Sunday the great Fusion Sunday Market and a Print Museum Family Day will be on my Pick List. And then there is also the must-experience-at-least-once event in Temple Bar when Händel’s Messiah will be performed on Fishamble Street. And out at Farmleigh House a Japan Day takes place.

“The Story of Swing” performed by the Swing Cats

The Swing Cats were assembled in 2010 as a “Jumpin Swing Band” to move away from the Rat Pack crooning swing style and into the high-energy non-stop-dancing vibe as known from ball rooms in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. The Swing Cats developed a free style way of playing Swing with unpredictable arrangements to keep the music flowing for the high-energy swing dancers.
The band is a 6 piece with piano, drums, double bass, a two piece brass section, and a lead vocalist and they play a two hour non-stop set with minimal gaps between songs to keep the dance floor moving.
In addition to many songs from the 30s and 40s swing era, The Swing Cats are also performing modern songs from the 80s to today in the swing style from the 30s and 40s.

Dublin’s Good Friday Concert – Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups

The Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups invites to “Dublin’s Good Friday Concert” on Friday 18 April in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Goethe-Institut Choir and the Dublin Symphony Orchestra will be performing the Faure Requiem with works by Bach and Schubert. This is a special treat for everyone who likes classical and ecclesiastical music.
Tickets are EUR 25 and all funds raised go towards the frontline services of the 45 resident member charities of the Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups. Tickets can be purchased through www.carmichaelcentre.ie/events or 01-8735702.

In 10 years: 2840 km of Bicycle Routes in Dublin
If the National Transport Authority’s plans will become reality, Dublin will have the massive stretch of 2840 km of bicycle tracks by 2024 (www.thejournal.ie/dublin-cycling-plan-1410242-Apr2014/ ). Considering that most cycling in Dublin is communter cycling and not leisure cycling, I hope that the routes are really enabling people to get to their work place easie.
And waht next? Something needs to be done about the huge amount of bike thefts here. If a bike thief can break a lock in the middle of Dublin in broad daylight without any interference by anybody, something is major wrong.

Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition

National Gallery of Ireland, Clare Street, Dublin 2
Founded in 1854 by an Act of Parliament, the National Gallery of Ireland’s first Board was established with seventeen governors and guardians. This governance included the President of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), which was considered the most important arts organisation in Ireland, and two artists nominated by the RHA, George Petrie and George Francis Mulvany. Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.
Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.
“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.
On Tuesday 08 April at 10:30, Curator Donal Maguire will give an introduction to the exhibition. Gallery Lecture Theatre. Admission is free. www.nationalgallery.ie

Clontarf Millennium Art Exhibition

Over two hundred art works based on the theme of Clontarf from 1014 – 2014 will be on display in this group show. ”. Artists will showcase works in various mediums such as oils, watercolours, acrylics, drawings, mixed media, mixed textiles and sculpture.
Dr. Colm Lennon, historian, author and artist will officially open the exhibition on Thursday 17th April at 7pm and there will be a special music performance by Ceoltoiri Cluain Tarbh.
To coincide with the exhibition, ‘This is how it’s done’, a lecture and series of art demonstrations will be held in the Norman Suite at Clontarf Castle from Friday 18th – Monday 21st April. Artist, Mary O’ Brien will give a lecture on ‘The Representation of Women in 20th Century Irish Art’ on Friday at 4pm and the demonstrations will take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 11am and 3pm each day. This will be a great opportunity to meet artists and learn about the various art forms, mediums and techniques they use, such as palette knife painting, drawing, charcoal work, cloud painting, felt making and flower arranging.

The School is inspired by Francis and Hanna Sheehy Skeffington who devoted their lives to the achievement of a Republic based on social justice, equality and an abhorrence of war.
The School provides an opportunity to broaden and spread the discussion about human rights by providing a space for inputs from notable academics, commentators and activists concerned with informing and promoting a rights-based agenda.

Dublin Bikes Go Pink for Giro

Dublin Bikes together with Dublin City Council will take to the streets on a pink whistle-stop tour to promote the Giro d’Italia coming to Dublin on 11 May. A convoy of pink Dublin cyclists will parade around Dublin with whistles, handing out pink Giro water bottles, key-rings, and badges.
The five key locations are:
+ Barnardo’s Sq (Opp. Olympia Theatre on Dame Street)
+ Stephen’s Green (Shelbourne Side)
+ Jervis Street
+ Merrion Square
+ Earlsfort Terrace (at National Concert Hall)
The cyclists tour will finish at Merrion Square West bike station where a temporary race finish line will be set up to mirror the actual finish line for the official Giro d’Italia race on 11 May.

IFI Spotlight

IFI Spotlight is a yearly event that will feature this time new Irish features and a day-long seminar chaired by Margaret Kelleher (Chair of Anglo-Irish Literature at UCD and IFI Chair), which will focus on film and television production made in or about Ireland during 2013.
There will be a series of discussions and debates on film and television and this will be complemented by the release of three new titles during the month of April, John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary (opens April 11th), the screen adaptation of John Banville’s The Sea (opens April 18th), and Pat Collins’ Living in a Coded Land (opens April 25th).

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

The panel will include Dr Niamh Puirseil, writer and historian and author of the Landmark Documents in Irish History; Dr Kelly Fitzgerald, folklorist and lecturer in Irish Folklore, Celtic Civilisation and Irish Studies in UCD; Nessa O’Mahony, a winner of the National Women’s Poetry Competition whose poetry is included in this year’s One City One Book poetry anthology ‘If Ever You Go’, and Dr Ellen Rowley, a historian of Irish architecture specializing in the development of Dublin’s built environement and who is presently engaged in the first inventory of Dublin’s twentieth-century buildings for Dublin City Council.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

Messiah on the Street

The Choral Society is supported by the Dublin Händelian Orchestra conducted by Proinnsias O’Duinn and by Soloist Stuart Kinsella.
It’s a great opportunity to hear this iconic composition in its historic environment. Ohhh, and be prepared, some fun crowd-participation is part of the performance towards the end of it.

AkiDwA, the national network of migrant women living in Ireland, explains that in some areas of the city live now more non Irish than Irish born people and this requires people with different cultures to enter into a conversation to avoid misunderstandings. To initiate such a conversation they are launching “Dublin Women for One City One People”. This project will involve people living in the north inner city area.
You are invited to come to a meeting to hear the ideas of AkiDwA on initiating this conversation between people of different cultural backgrounds. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.

The Royal Irish Academy will host a literary event on biography, life-writing and the writing life from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. ‘Writing Lives’ will feature talks by leading scholars and biographers, including Andrew Hadfield, biographer of the controversial poet Edmund Spenser, Ramona Wray, the leading scholar of women’s life-writing in the seventeenth century, and Fionnuala Dillane, author of a major study of George Eliot’s journalism, and winner of the 2014 Colby Prize.

On “Palestinian Prisoner’s Day”, the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will host a film night focusing on Palestinian child prisoners in Israeli jails. The film “Small Hands in Handcuffs” will be screened and excerpts from “Stone Cold Justice”, a recent episode of ABC Australia’s current affairs TV show ‘Four Corners’ will be shown.

Sea bird watching – Lecture

The lecture “Oceanic Wonders and Migration on the Edge! – Seawatching and The Seawatch Project” with Niall Keoghwill take place.
Every autumn, thousands of migratory seabirds make their way through Irish waters to feed and ‘fuel up’ before continuing their long journey from one end of the Atlantic to the other. The diversity in species ranges from tiny sprites such as Storm Petrels to graceful giants like the Gannet. All this activity can be visible from our coastal headlands and this talk will illustrate how you can best see this spectacle for yourself (an activity known as ‘seawatching’) and also details the work being undertaken by BirdWatch Ireland to monitor migratory seabird populations (the Seatrack project).
Niall Keogh is a ‘Seabird Project’ fieldworker & Chairman of the Wicklow Branch of BirdWatch Ireland.

Today is Good Friday, and I have outlined the oddity of this day in the This is Odd! section.
Shops will be open as normal. Most businesses are open as normal, but banks will be closed and schools are on holidays anyway. Many public service offices will be closed as well. But if you do have to work today, you have no right on overtime/weekend pay, it is just a normal Friday.
Today is NOT a public holiday, so all rules for traffic and parking are like on a normal Friday as well.

The FAIL BETTER Curator Talk: Get Your Fix of Failure

Join the curator of the Science Gallery’s current exhibition “Fail Better”, Jane Ni Dhulchaointigh (inventor of Sugru), to explore the creativity that goes hand-in-hand with fixing things and to find out why failure can present exciting opportunities for designers.
Jane will be joined by her partner and Sugru co-founder James Carrigan, who will talk about Fixperts, a project that takes failure and fixing, smushes them together, and changes people’s lives. Fixperts has been a core element of FAIL BETTER.

Dublin Mountains Partnership – Guided Walks
12+13+19+21+27+27 April
There will be 6 (!!) guided walks in the Dublin Mountains in April. The walks are organised by the Dublin Mountain partnership and are all of varying difficulty. There are a number of training hikes, a 8.5 hour walk for the serious hikers, an easy hike for beginners and also a “public transport” hike with a circular route starting and ending near a DART station.

Good Friday – The oddest day of the year!
This week is Good Friday, an important day for all Christians in the religious year and a very odd day for everybody in Ireland. Why is it odd?
Well, with the big role the catholic religion plays in Ireland (Education is still dominated by catholic institutions, the majority of laws and rules are directly or indirectly influenced by the catholic church), you would think that Good Friday is a public holiday, but it isn’t. It is a bank holiday, but no public holiday. Which means that most of us will have to work on that day.
On the other hand, when it comes to pubs, the day is even odder. Suddenly it is soooo important that there are special laws for it: Pubs are not allowed to open on Good Friday. (And it doesn’t matter if you are catholic or not, the all-caring Irish state is protecting you from yourself so that you don’t accidentally commit a sinful act of consuming alcohol on that day.) BUT….wait…it is permitted to sell alcohol IF it is in connection with a substantial meal, so that travelling people won’t have to miss their alcohol. And last year a number of Greyhound stadiums got a permission to sell alcohol. Hotels are allowed to sell alcohol, but restaurants are not. Mad!
All a bit contradictory or hypocritical? You bet!
Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining about the fact that people have a day less per year to get drunk. But this is a LAW in 2014, which means that the police is obliged to enforce it! Odd, outdated and just plain bonkers!
And how do (too) many people in Ireland react to this oddness? With even odder behaviour! Watch Off-licenses on Thursday evening!! Some will have queues outside, others will just be packed. ALL will be super busy. Why? Because, “OMG, the pubs will be closed on Friday and how could I survive without alcohol for a WHOLE day?”
