Hi all!

Could it be that we have good weather this weekend?

[ad]

It would be great for Japan Day in Farmleigh House and for “Messiah on the Street” concert in Fishamble Street. They are two regular events that are very very popular. And next weekend is already Easter. If you are in Dublin (lots of people go on holidays over Easter) make sure you check out the Dublin Event Guide, because – somewhat surprisingly – there will be a number of events taking place even on the Easter weekend.

And what else is in this edition? Well, I strongly suggest that you read the Dublin News. There is an amazing offer for totally free taxi money for you. Don’t miss out!

And here are two very important appeals for the Dublin Event Guide:

The sending of the weekly e-mail newsletter costs EUR 170 per month and for this I need your help. If four wonderful people can be found per week, then we usually make it exactly to that amount. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-)

And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 20,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 45,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Ok, today I have to admit that the “Feel Good video clip is a little bit tongue in cheek. Well, it is a clip that most likely/hopefully will make you smile or giggle and since that is the best start to feel good, my choice might not be the worst at all. Have a look at this video of Michael D. Higgins on his visit in the UK: www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1424047084513469 ;-)

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation. The great donors last week were Sinead D, Padraig K, Nicola R, Susan H. Your help is MUCH appreciated!

Every bit counts to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week, I will focus on just two days, because it is two busy days. More than 170 free events are taking place this week and quite a number of high-profile events are happening on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday the Dodder Action Day and the Anarchist Bookfair and a Giro d’Italia “Dublin Bikes go pink” promo event should be considered by you.

On Sunday the great Fusion Sunday Market and a Print Museum Family Day will be on my Pick List. And then there is also the must-experience-at-least-once event in Temple Bar when Händel’s Messiah will be performed on Fishamble Street. And out at Farmleigh House a Japan Day takes place.

During the week? Lots of other events (and Dublin: One City, One Book is still continuing)! But you leave them for you to check them out!

“The Story of Swing” performed by the Swing Cats

Sat 19 April 2014 – 19:30
Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

The Swing Cats were assembled in 2010 as a “Jumpin Swing Band” to move away from the Rat Pack crooning swing style and into the high-energy non-stop-dancing vibe as known from ball rooms in the USA in the 1930s and 40s. The Swing Cats developed a free style way of playing Swing with unpredictable arrangements to keep the music flowing for the high-energy swing dancers.

The band is a 6 piece with piano, drums, double bass, a two piece brass section, and a lead vocalist and they play a two hour non-stop set with minimal gaps between songs to keep the dance floor moving.

In addition to many songs from the 30s and 40s swing era, The Swing Cats are also performing modern songs from the 80s to today in the swing style from the 30s and 40s.

On Sat 19 April, The Swing Cats, together with Special Guest Ken Kirwan, would like to tell you the “Story of Swing” in the Button Factory. Tickets are EUR 19.50 (plus fees) and are available on ticketmaster.ie

For the Dublin Event Guide readers, The Swing Cats have made 2 pairs of tickets available for a competition. If you want to have a chance to win a pair of tickets, just send a mail to dublineventguide@mail.com with the SWING CATS in the subject line and your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on 15 April.

We Love Dublin – Dublin Loving Migrants Needed!

“We Love Dublin” is a new travel series that will be broadcast on Dublin Community Television (DCTV). The goal of the series is to show Dublin through the eyes of Dubliners of migrant extraction who have developed a deep love of Dublin and want to share this passion with a broader community, both locally and overseas. The people behind “We Love Dublin” are now looking for paricipants and if you want to be a part of it, go to www.welovedublin/ and share your story/insight. The facebook page is: www.facebook.com/WeLoveDublinTV

In 10 years: 2840 km of Bicycle Routes in Dublin

If the National Transport Authority’s plans will become reality, Dublin will have the massive stretch of 2840 km of bicycle tracks by 2024 (www.thejournal.ie/dublin-cycling-plan-1410242-Apr2014/ ). Considering that most cycling in Dublin is communter cycling and not leisure cycling, I hope that the routes are really enabling people to get to their work place easie.

And waht next? Something needs to be done about the huge amount of bike thefts here. If a bike thief can break a lock in the middle of Dublin in broad daylight without any interference by anybody, something is major wrong.

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?

Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!

But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?

This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

www.bookdepository.com?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon

You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.

And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Opportunities

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Governors, Guardians, Artists – Exhibition

Since then, over fifty artists have served on the Board, contributing to, and supervising, the development of the institution and its collection.

Many of the artists nominated to the Board were active members of the Irish art community, sometimes holding positions of great influence. For example, Sean Keating was a senior teacher at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, President of the RHA and served on the Board of the Gallery for twenty-eight years.

“Governors, Guardians, Artists” highlights the work of a selection of those artists who served on the board, such as George Petrie, John Lavery, Nathaniel Hone, Sarah Purser, Jack B.Yeats, Evie Hone and Sean Keating.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Apr

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Good Friday

09:00, Fri 18 Apr

Dublin (various locations)

Today is Good Friday, and I have outlined the oddity of this day in the This is Odd! section.

Shops will be open as normal. Most businesses are open as normal, but banks will be closed and schools are on holidays anyway. Many public service offices will be closed as well. But if you do have to work today, you have no right on overtime/weekend pay, it is just a normal Friday.

Today is NOT a public holiday, so all rules for traffic and parking are like on a normal Friday as well.

Do you HAVE to buy alcohol today? Read the “This is Odd!” section where the rules are explained in further detail. :-P

The FAIL BETTER Curator Talk: Get Your Fix of Failure

24 April – 18:00-19:15

Science Gallery, Pearse Street. Dublin 2

Join the curator of the Science Gallery’s current exhibition “Fail Better”, Jane Ni Dhulchaointigh (inventor of Sugru), to explore the creativity that goes hand-in-hand with fixing things and to find out why failure can present exciting opportunities for designers.

Jane will be joined by her partner and Sugru co-founder James Carrigan, who will talk about Fixperts, a project that takes failure and fixing, smushes them together, and changes people’s lives. Fixperts has been a core element of FAIL BETTER.

Admission to the event is free, but I would expect that it will book out so it would be a good idea to register soon here.

Have a look at the Dublin Mountain Partnership webpage for all details and make sure you register in time if you want to take part.
All details can be found on the website www.dublinmountains.ie/news/upcoming_events/?no_cache=1 All walks are free, but pre-registration is required.

Not free, but interesting nevertheless:

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

Good Friday – The oddest day of the year!

This week is Good Friday, an important day for all Christians in the religious year and a very odd day for everybody in Ireland. Why is it odd?

Well, with the big role the catholic religion plays in Ireland (Education is still dominated by catholic institutions, the majority of laws and rules are directly or indirectly influenced by the catholic church), you would think that Good Friday is a public holiday, but it isn’t. It is a bank holiday, but no public holiday. Which means that most of us will have to work on that day.

On the other hand, when it comes to pubs, the day is even odder. Suddenly it is soooo important that there are special laws for it: Pubs are not allowed to open on Good Friday. (And it doesn’t matter if you are catholic or not, the all-caring Irish state is protecting you from yourself so that you don’t accidentally commit a sinful act of consuming alcohol on that day.) BUT….wait…it is permitted to sell alcohol IF it is in connection with a substantial meal, so that travelling people won’t have to miss their alcohol. And last year a number of Greyhound stadiums got a permission to sell alcohol. Hotels are allowed to sell alcohol, but restaurants are not. Mad!

All a bit contradictory or hypocritical? You bet!

Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining about the fact that people have a day less per year to get drunk. But this is a LAW in 2014, which means that the police is obliged to enforce it! Odd, outdated and just plain bonkers!

And how do (too) many people in Ireland react to this oddness? With even odder behaviour! Watch Off-licenses on Thursday evening!! Some will have queues outside, others will just be packed. ALL will be super busy. Why? Because, “OMG, the pubs will be closed on Friday and how could I survive without alcohol for a WHOLE day?”

Have an event-full weekend and week,

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
