The Dublin Event Guide wouldn’t be where it is today without your big help. …And the number of Likes increases continually, so we will grow more and more. :-) Garth Brooks has clearly still more Fans, but we are hot on his heels. ;-)
But what is this with Garth Brooks? Is it four or five concerts now? Isn’t that mad for a tiny country like Ireland? I think if the Beatles and Elvis Presley together had a concert here this year, they wouldn’t get the same number of paying customers. Maybe it is just the scarcity panic that we human beings get. If you can’t have something, you want it a lot more than if it is easily available.
Do you think it would work if I said that I will stop accepting more Dublin Event Guide subscribers once we reach 20,000? Would that be enough to start a panic? Maybe I should try it! ;-)

This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. Babytalk Festival – Ticket Competition

Babytalk is a brand-new festival for babies and their families, expectant parents and anyone thinking of starting or adding to their family. Families and parents-to-be will be provided with information and can purchase baby-related products in a fun, relaxed environment.
The festival will feature shopping and exhibitors who will be showcasing their products and services and there will be a series of short talks from expert speakers including David Carey, Genevieve Becker, Sue Jameson, Fiona Rea and more.
An entertainment programme of music, stand-up comedy and children’s entertainers, including RTE’s Reuben, and Irish Mammies comedian Colm O’Regan will entertain the whole family.
There will be product & service demonstrations; an “Information Station” with representatives from parent support agencies; a reading and storytelling area with readings by authors and children entertainers. And there will be Cafe and play areas, free car parking, buggy parking, baby changing & feeding areas.

Eventbrite: Online ticketing service for all event organisers (free or paid)
Last week, I mentioned Eventbrite, the online self-service ticketing platform, here in the Dublin News and a number of people contacted me to find out how the current special offer from Eventbrite works.
It is very simple: If you organise a free event with Eventbrite.ie, it is always free. If you sell tickets for it, you can currently also try the service without paying the usual service charge, as long as you are a new user. An online payment processing fees of around 3.5 percent still applies. The normal service fee after this promotion is 2.5 percent of the ticket price + EUR 0.75 per ticket.
It couldn’t be simpler and the deal applies to all events that are published before 15 April and take place any time in 2014. Check it out here.

Yelp Festival of Firsts
The Yelp Festival of Firsts is taking place from 28 Jan to 28 Feb, Yelp Dublin has programmed loads of free to nearly free events happening around the city to encourage people to get out and about their city and try something new.
From belly dancing to star gazing, yoga to new menu sampling, hill walking and kayaking, there is bound to be something in there for everyone. National Gallery of Ireland Exhibitions

The National Gallery is currently showing New Portraits (14 Dec – 09 Feb) for another few days. Then there is “Care of the Collection” (18 Jan – 30 May), a presentation of three paintings that were preserved by the National Gallery. You will learn how the preservation methods have changed over the last 100 years.
And for the rest of the year “From the Archive: The Story of the National Gallery of Ireland” (30 Jan-14 Dec) will be on show.

100 Years Ago – A Reflection on the 1913 Lockout – in Paintings and Sculpture

RADE (Recovery through Art, Drama, and Education) worked with several participants on the production of an art exhibit based on the 1913 Lockout. Over eight months, the artists immersed themselves in the stories and history of the Lockout. The participants, many of whom are not originally artists, created art for this historical event. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.

Love Letters Exhibition

The exhibition “Love Letters” will warm your heart this February. To coincide with this year’s Valentine’s Day the CFCP has decided to celebrate not only love, but the good old fashioned art of letter writing. They have an amazing archive of love letters -some recent, some very old, some funny, some heart-breaking and all of them thought provoking. And they are also displaying a selection of art works submitted by artists interpreting the love letter theme in their chosen media.
Opening is on 11 Feb from 18:00-21:00.

A group exhibition curated by RGKSKSRG, with artists Alan Butler (IE), Mark Durkan (IE), Mary-Jo Gilligan (IE), Oliver Laric (AT), Rachel Maclean (UK), Eilis McDonald (IE), Brenna Murphy (US), James Ó hAodha (IE), Pilvi Takala (FI) will take place in The LAB and the opening reception is on Thurs 06 Feb (18:00-20:00).
The opening will be preceded by an artist talk with Rachel Maclean at 17:00. The exhibition will be officially launched by Cliodhna Shaffrey, Visual Arts Advisor with the Arts Council.
The show features works by International artists Oliver Laric, Rachel Maclean, Brenna Murphy, and Pilvi Takala; with newly commissioned interventions by Dublin-based artists Alan Butler, Mark Durkan and Eilis McDonald; and ephemeral events by Mary-Jo Gilligan and James Ó hAodha.
“Tonight, you can call me Trish” invites artists and viewers to move through multiple states of being. This is an exhibition created through plural agencies at work; artists are artists, diviners, designers, mediators; audience is viewer, believer, conspirator, user; curator is conceptualist, choreographer, strategist, inputter.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.
The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page and I haven’t been there myself.
Sarah alerted me to the market (Thanks!) and she praised the “Afternoon Tea” offer for EUR 10.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I was at the opening of the exhibition and it is definitely a good one. I definitely recommend the exhibition! Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children.
Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The mighty subcontinent of India is home to two great classical traditions, the Hindustani music of the north and the Carnatic style of the south. Shantala Subramanyam is from Bangalore, heartland of carnatic music, renowned for its emphasis on improvisation on beautiful ragas within a highly evolved rhythmic vocabulary. She plays the venu, a carnatic bamboo flute, and it’s an instrument with a warm sonority not unlike our own traditional wood flute.

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.
The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page and I haven’t been there myself.
Sarah alerted me to the market (Thanks!) and she praised the “Afternoon Tea” offer for EUR 10.

What could be done in Dublin with the over 600 prime sites and a wealth of historic buildings that are currently vacant or disused? “City Limits – Inventive Uses for Urban Spaces” will discuss this topic.
Initiatives to be discussed will include the proposed vacant sites levy, DCC Arts Office creative spaces programme, Allotment Homes, Dublin House, Granby Park, the Rediscovery Centre, Chamber Weaver Park and Makers & Brothers pop up shops.

“The Role of Conscription and the International Brigades during the Civil War” is a 2-day seminar (13+20 Feb) about the social and cultural history of conscription during the Spanish Civil War and portrayals of the International Brigades and the Spanish Civil War.
On the first day Dr. James Matthews will focus on the experience and mobilization of conscript soldiers on both the Republican and Nationalist sides.
On the second day (20 Feb – 18:30), he will explore the historiographical controversy surrounding the volunteer combatants that fought for the Republic in the International Brigades: Were these men independent volunteers against Fascism or a Comintern-organized army under the orders of the Soviet Union?

As part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival a demonstration of special effects will take place on Smithfield Plaza in partnership with Film FX Ireland, Ashford, and the Stunt Actors Guild.
From something as simple as smoke or rain to fire and explosions, special effects play a major role in film making and at this demonstration you can see the effects and afterwards the F/X and stunt teams will answer questions from the audience about how they co-ordinate and organise realistic action sequences in a safe and secure environment.
This sounds like a really interesting event and because it is free and no tickets are required.

Scopes and Space Ltd. will run free telescope beginner classes on Sat 15 February. It doesn’t matter what telescope you have, if you are having trouble using it, or need advice on how to get the best possible views. Scopes and Space will help you. There will be two classes on Saturday. The first is at 13:00 and the second at 15:00.

The classes will be about telescopes and their different types. You will learn a bit about the history of telescopes and most importantly how to use your telescope safely and properly.

Discrimination or not? LGBT and RTE and New York
Rory O’Neill’s (Panti) interview on the Saturday Night was the most harmless and correct statement about issues of homophobia and I wrote last week here in this This is Odd! section that RTE absolutely should not have paid a cent to anyone. EUR 85k were paid to the Iona Institute and columnist John Waters for having been mentioned as people/entities that have a problem with ga y people. If you listen to the interview (for example here) and you should, you will hear that all Rory O’Neill said that John Waters and the Iona Institute are “horrible and mean about ga ys”. And then he says that “if you are arguing that g ay people need to be treated in any way differently than anybody else, then you are a Homophobe”. Can’t disagree with that either. But I can’t hear anywhere in the interview that it was said that the two entities that got 85k of OUR money are Homophobes. So, Rory O’Neill was totally right and I couldn’t agree more with him.
Why am I repeating what I wrote last week? Well because more has happened since.
It now emerged that the new major of New York, Bill de Blasio, has decided not to partake in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York, because he says “I simply disagree with the organisers of that parade in their exclusion of some individuals in this city”. And he seems to refer to the exclusion of LGBT groups. According to the Irish Times: “The parade’s organisers have said that g ays and le sb ians are welcome to march but that public displays celebrating being gay would detract from commemorating St Patrick and Irish heritage.”
So are they excluded or not? Let’s – for the moment – assume that the organisers are right and they are NOT excluded, well then it comes down to the “public displays celebrating being ga y”.
The organisers of the St. Patrick’s Parade in New York are the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an arch-conservative catholic organisation and I am surprised that the LGBT groups in New York even want to be mentioned in the same sentence with them, but that’s their decision.
The important point here is that it needs to be clarified what the different parade participants are allowed to do and what not. If some carry a banner that says “We are the Firefighters of New York”, then the LGBT group should be allowed to carry a banner “We are the LGBT community of New York”. No discussion! If on the other hand, the LGBT group would like to carry banners that fight for their rights or any other type of banners, then I am with Rory O’Neill as well: There should not be any different treatment for anybody.
So can somebody please clarify what is meant with “public displays celebrating being g ay” and what on the other hand, the LGBT community would expect to display? Without that information the whole conflict is rather odd!
