A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The 3rd Blackrock Animation Film Festival (BAFFA 2013) will take place on 11+12 Oct with screenings, workshops and the presentation of the Blackrock Animation Film Festival Awards (BAFFAs). On Friday the lectures, workshops and screenings will take place in the IADT in Dun Laoghaire before the festival moves to Blackrock on Saturday. “Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.

“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “

Admission is free and the exhibition will run until 18 October.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a relatively new weekly market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. Sounds interesting and I will check it out over the coming weeks. As a major fundraiser for the Simon Community, participation in this 5km run is not free, but supporting others and cheering them on and also the kids zone, entertainment and live music is free. Some roads in Phoenix Park will be closed with the first ones closing at 08:00 and the last one opening again at 11:30.

After many many months of renovations, the Irish Museum of Modern Art is reopening its main building with a weekend of fun, activities and events for all ages. The Irish Aid Volunteer Fair will showcase volunteering options in a variety of developing countries. Over 20 volunteer sending agencies will give advice and presentations detailing their placements, the application process and their personal experiences. The day will also feature a series of lively talks and workshops discussing overseas volunteering opportunities and the sustainable development results achieved through volunteering in developing countries and you will have the chance to chat with returned volunteers.

The Irish Franchising & Start-up Expo will take place on Fri and Sat (11+12 Oct). Admission is free if you pre-register, however there is an admission fee of EUR 10 on the door if you don’t pre-register.

Trade your unworn clothes for fancier ones at the Swopshop Roadshow in the Morgan Hotel this Saturday.

For a number of years “Swopshop” was a popular but small boutique in Temple Bar and now a new format is bringing Swopshop back again and it is bigger and better. The Roadshow is one-day fashion exchange event with additional features (3D makeovers, style clinic and photoshoots).

You can bring your clothes to upgrade them by swopping with others or if you have nothing to swop, you can buy pre-worn clothes for very competitive prices. All clothes are either designer clothes or high-end labels. A service charge of between EUR 0 and EUR 25 is payable to the Swopshop Roadshow. And here is an example:

A guest brings a French Connection dress in perfect condition (worth approximately €90 new) and trades for a Ted Baker dress (approximately same value new). The guest pays the service charge of just EUR 8, i.e a small fraction of original cost or cost of buying new. Or they can trade down and pay less (even EUR 0) or upgrade to a higher category and pay slightly more. Even if you have nothing to trade on the day, there will be a price promise which means the absolute max. you will pay is EUR 30 per piece! Sounds cool!

Even better: Admission is free! There is a limit of people the venue can take, so if you arrive at a time when lots of others are there you might have to wait a bit to get in. The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) place every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday it is a fancy dress market. It’s a flea-market type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders. The Oscar Verne Café on site and (at least at the weekends) live music adds even more character.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. On Saturday from 12:30-15:00 four unsigned bands will perform in HMV Dundrum. Line-up: Knoeline Keane, Hidden Highways, Buffalo Sunn, O Emperor

O Emperor will perform songs from their second album Vitreous, Sweet Jane have changed their name to Buffalo Sunn and will be playing music from their debut album Sugar for my Soul, Hidden Highways are perfroming from their debut album called Hidden Highways. Knoeline Keane is starting out, and will perform her own songs at the start of the show.

A protest march against the Irish Budget, which will be annoucned on Tuesday, will assemble at the Garden of Remembrance and will then march to the GPO. It is organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

I am not sure if this protest march wills till go ahead considering that only 60 minutes earlier the protest against the Budget will assemble at the Garden Of Remembrance and will probably have some speeches at the GPO. The march against Monsanto is allegedly assembling at 14:00 and will then go Kildare Street where the Department of Agriculture is located. Busy O’Connell Street if it is going ahead.

Monsanto is the massive international companies that has their finger in everything from genetically modified crops to herbicides etc. and that is destroying food as we know it. Monsanto would prefer to replace nature with their own chemical and biological engineering and in the process they make seeds so expensive that developing countries can’t afford them.

If you have never heard of Monsanto I strongly recommend that you inform yourself about what the issue is that many many people see as a serious problem.

A joint gig and book launch: Little Island Publishers are launching a book, called “The Powers”, written by Kevin Stevens, and the bands Groom and Land Lovers will entertain with their music and songs. Admission is free.

The Cantóirí Choir is inviting to a Open/Public Choir Rehearsal. The event takes place in association with Mental Health Ireland’s National Choral Singing Week.

Screening of a documentary about the struggle of the people of Jeju Island, South Korea. Set in the context of the American presence in Korea after World War II, the film reveals horrible atrocities at the hands of the U.S. Military Government of Korea.

Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

The Children’s Art Cart Workshops will be held again in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre (01-6770095) every Sunday from 24 March to 22 December 2013. Currently the workshop is still free, but there is a possibility that a fee will be introduced at some point. Children must be over 6 years of age and must be supervised by an adult.
You can’t pre-book, so early arrival is required because there are only 20 places per session.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op. It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month. Admission is free.

There seem to be TWO weekly markets on Long Mile Road and both are very close to each other. One is behind Wigoders on Long Mile Road (across the road from Aldi). The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature Paul McNamara (tenor) and Philip Mayers (piano) doing a song recital ‘in the shadow of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus’ with songs by Stanford, Liszt, Humperdinck, Wolf and Duparc in association with the Wagner Society of Ireland.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The next Sunday Sketching for 7+ Year olds has the title “Dublin Street Scenes”. No booking necessary. Admission is free and early arrival is recommended.

Since ancient times, people have been brewing, distilling, and fermenting a dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits, and fungi. Hear the fascinating tales behind many of the concoctions that have been created, each one a unique contribution to the traditions and cultural history of many people across the world.

Three different guitar acts, including bluegrass and “The Aqualights” will perform all evening in the Beerhouse in Capel Street. Admission is free.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir Mass invites to a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street every Sunday at 19:30. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known choirs in Ireland will sing during the mass and everybody is welcome independent from your level of religiousness.

Every Sunday this singer-songwriter night takes place in the Bleeding Horse in Camden St. from 8.30pm. It is an Open mic night and performers can just turn up and put their name on the list for that night.

The Comedy Crunch is a free Stand Up comedy downstairs in Stag’s Head, Dame Lane from 21:00 every week on Sun+Mon. Every week different comedians entertain and on top of that there is some free ice cream. The line-up can be found via the Comedy Crunch Facebook Page (see link below).

Rogério from the Brazilian dance project “Forró de Lampião” in Dublin tells me: Forró de Lampião is Brazilian music that has the same roots as Samba and there is a whole culture that has developed around “forro”. Every Sunday, free dance classes take place in the Grand Social (new loation!) and if you are interested, just turn up one Sunday.

“Rhythm Rocker at The Globe” is a weekly event on Sunday night in The Globe in Sth Great Georges Street, Dublin 2. It is a Rockabilly, R’n’R, Roots night with alternating (week by week) live bands Pavement Kings, Donna & The Sazzy Catz, The Mosquitoes and The Pacifics from 21:00 and with DJs from 23:00-01:30. The weekly Sunday Roast is a free event in the Mercantile where live music is combined with free roast potatoes. UCD Centre for Science is hosting the CERN travelling exhibition “Mission Higgs” as part of the month-long celebrations for the opening of the this new science building.

The discovery of the Higgs boson last year was one of mankind’s most important scientific achievement both in terms of our understanding of the universe, and the worldwide theoretical, experimental, and political collaboration that made it happen. “The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “

‘Borradh Buan 2013’ a festival of Irish language and cultural events will take place in the axis Theatre from 14-25 October. Two events at this festival are free and I will list these two here. The festival is in its 10th year and provides a range of activities for children, young people and adults – anyone who wants to enjoy their Irish. The festival includes live music, film, theatre, puppetry and storytelling, offering events ranging from a traditional music baby bop to brand new performances in Irish. Borradh Buan is a celebration of Irish language contemporary and traditional performing arts, featuring the work of established and emerging artists and companies.

This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland.

The week-long festival on each campus will screen documentaries on a range of development issues and includes films that have already featured at major international film festivals in the last year and been nominated for awards. In addition to film screenings, there will be workshops hosted by visiting directors and producers and panel discussions on the issues explored in the films.

As part of the Maths Week Ireland events series, Professor Keith Devlin (Executive Director of Stanford’s H-Star programme and co-founder of the University’s mediaX centre) from Stanford University will talk about the use of games in the learning of maths. Devlin is famed for his ability to make anyone fall in love in maths and he is a frequent contributor to National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition Saturday under the name The Math Guy.

“Re-Awakening Dublin’s Bike Culture – the Growth of Dublin Bikes” is the title of the next event of the Dublin Cycling Campaign.

Jason Frehill, Dublin City Council’s project manager for the dublinbikes schemes, will give a talk on the expansion of the incredibly popular dublinbikes scheme. The proposed expansion will provide for 58 new bike stations and a trebling of the scheme’s capacity, with the expanded service becoming fully operational in Summer 2014. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The Monday Echo is a weekly songwriter and poetry live showcase held on Mondays in the basement of The International Bar. Usually, the show has 3 songwriters and 3 poets who perform for roughly 20 minutes each. Admission is free.

The film opens in the IFI on 18 Oct.

The Budget 2014 for Ireland will be announced on Tuesday. In the past it was announced just about a month before it was applied (i.e. in the beginning of December), so why now in October? The EU wants to get a chance to check the budgets of the EU countries before they become law so that countries that have lost control of their finances can be reigned in. The deadline is 15 October and therefore the Irish Budget for next year will also be announced on 15 October.

Apart from the expectation that it will be ANOTHER painful budget with cuts and tax increases because Ireland has to save another whopping 2.5 billion, there is (probably! – I am not an expert) a significant difference to previous years: In the past tax increases for alcohol, cigarettes and fuel often already took force from the midnight of the day of the announcement. But that I would expect that this required that the Dail had approved the Budget. With the announcement of a Draft Budget that will then be checked by the EU, it probably means that no tax increases will come into effect on the same day. Is that a big change? Not at all. The pain the budget will cause will be the bigger problem.

All radio, TV and newspaper websites have special Budget coverage on their sites and you will be able to find all the details there. I am not sure if the announcement will take place at 14:00 or any other time. So check closer to the date.

A two-hour workshop for music artists who play any instrument will take place and is lead by Gabriel Caetano. The first part of the workshop is a music lesson with an emphasis on the guitar, for beginning and intermediate levels. Practice and theory will be covered. Fergus Mulligan is the author of “William Dargan: An Honourable Life 1799-1867” and he will talk about William Dargan who was a major figure in 19th century Ireland. Born into a welloff Carlow farming family, he trained as an engineer with Thomas Telford and went on to build roads, canals, railways and reservoirs, developed hotels, flax and linen mills’, reclaimed vast tracts of farmland, turned Bray into the Brighton of Ireland and created Belfast port. At one time as many as 50,000 derived their livelihood directly or indirectly from William Dargan.

Paul Roe is a musician with particular interest in performance, research, education and participative music making. He has a PhD in Performance Practice from the University of York and he is a performer (clarinet and bass clarinet) of international repute. Professor David McConnell is a Professor of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. He pioneered the development of molecular genetics and genetic engineering in Ireland. Formerly Vice Provost of Trinity College, he is a member of the Executive Board of The European Federation of Biotechnology.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

A “Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty” will take place close to the Famine Memorial at the IFSC. The Commemoration brings together people from different walks of life and responsibilities in solidarity with everybody whose daily struggle against poverty and exclusion is a struggle for the respect of human rights. The event is organised by ATD Fourth World-Ireland.

‘Crime in the City: Crime and History’ is a series of talks and readings looking at the broad issue of crime in Dublin through the ages.

To celebrate their appointment, LUCILIN will give a public workshop (16:00-17:45) on writing for instruments followed by a concert (19:30) featuring soloist pieces and contemporary repertoire with the participation of Tomoko Kiba on violin, Danielle Hennicot on viola, Christophe Beau on violincello and Marcel Lallemang on clarinet.

As ensemble-in-residence LUCILIN will present a number of workshops and concerts throughout the academic year 2013/14, with future dates to be announced shortly. AskATon.com is a female-friendly knowledge sharing event series particularly focused on tech and digital industries. The concept for AskATon.com is framed around asking questions, sharing knowledge and finding answers.

Simon Singh, bestselling author of “Fermat’s Last Theorem”, “The Code Book” and “The Big Bang”, instead makes the compelling case that what The Simpsons’ writers are most passionate about is mathematics.

He reveals how the writers have drip-fed morsels of number theory into the series over the last twenty-five years. There are so many mathematical references in The Simpsons, and in its sister program, Futurama, that they could form the basis of an entire university course.

“Lingua + Musica: a Celebration of Linguistic and Cultural Diversity” is a free event that celebrates the European Day of Languages and draws attention to the importance of linguistic diversity. The evening will begin with a language and song workshop. The audience will be taught a simple dialogue in four different languages, as well as songs in various languages.

The second part of the event (from 21:00) will feature songs and music from a range of countries and cultures. Performers will include the traditional Irish music group The Bonny Men; Spanish/Czech singer Katerina Garcia; Conamara singer and harpist Síle Denvir; violinist Patrick Collins from the Café Orchestra, accompanied by Czech guitarist David Fiedler; and dancer Sibéal Davitt.

“Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.

“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “

The “8×8 Documentary Film Festival” will take place from 14-18 October in TCD and from 21-25 October in DCU.

This new festival is organised by Suas Educational Development together with loval organisations at the universities. Suas Educational Development tackles educational disadvantage in India, Kenya and Ireland.

The week-long festival on each campus will screen documentaries on a range of development issues and includes films that have already featured at major international film festivals in the last year and been nominated for awards. In addition to film screenings, there will be workshops hosted by visiting directors and producers and panel discussions on the issues explored in the films.

The Instituto Cervantes invites to the Irish, Spanish and Latin American Literary Festival (ISLA), which has been organised in collaboration with the Embassies of Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Spain and Mexico and other Irish and International organisations. It is a unique opportunity to attend a gathering of Irish and Hispanic literature where you will enjoy round tables, readings and other events from 18-20 Oct. 16 authors from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Ireland, Mexico and Spain will present their poetry, novel, and essay. The 13th Week of the Italian Language in the World (XIII Settimana Della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo) is taking place from 14-20 October and the theme is this year “Research, Discovery, Innovation: Italian Expertise”. Seminars, study presentations, symposiums and concerts will take place during the week and most will be in the Italian Institute of Culture on Fitzwilliam Square.

St Audeon’s is hosting a “Harvest Gathering” on Friday 18 Oct. with a revival of a Harvest Thanksgiving in St Audoen’s, the only surviving medieval Church in Dublin. The church is next door to the other St Audeon’s on High Street, centre for the Polish Chaplaincy.

The Church will be decorated with flowers, foliage, fruit and vegetables, and the Gathering will be celebrated in singing and with music, poetry and readings.

The ancient bells of St Audeon’s will be rung before the event which will be followed by a reception in the Visitor Centre, where traditional Harvest and Halloween fare will be provided. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

The produce of fruit and vegetables, donated towards the decoration of the church for this thanksgiving will be on display over the weekend of October 18 to 20. All produce will then be donated to the Morning Star Hostel for the homeless.

A free weekly a-cappella singing group for women from the LGBT community. Donations welcome.

“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.

There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.
