Hi all!
Great news! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) keeps growing and growing and last week an article about us in the Irish Times helped and a large number of the people that joined us new probably found out about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) through that article. But it is a mystery to me why my name was mentioned in the article, but neither the title of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” nor the website. When you read it it nearly seems as if they tried whatever possible to make it difficult for people to find it. It can’t be that the Irish Times feels threatened by successful online media publications, or can it?? The article is here: www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/travel/free-for-all-great-days-out-without-the-wallet-1.1483254 Amazingly (and a big thanks for it), two lovely people enhanced the article with their comments on the website. Unfortunately that didn’t help with the printed version, but lots of you just searched for my name. Luckily it is a rather rare name! There are only two Joerg Steegmuellers in this world and only one is in Ireland. ;-)

A big welcome to all new subscribers! We are now 16,084 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community (that’s all subscribers to the e-mail magazine) and there are more than 22,000 LIKES on Facebook! I have to say WOW again! :-)
Some of you have heard this a number of times, but because there are so many new additions again, I will repeat the whole thing once again. These are just a few important things to know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events):
1) All events listed here are free (unless otherwise clearly identified).
2) This mail is VERY long (I know!), but you are NOT meant to read all of it! Like with a newspaper, read the headline and if you are interested, read more. Otherwise just move on.
3) If your e-mail client shows pictures, you see nice date separations and section separations. If you don’t see pictures, switch them on! It is worth it!
4) There is no commercial company behind the Dublin Event Guide, instead I compile it every week in my spare time. Please consider that when you project you measure this e-mail magazine against your expectations or preferences.
5) You can always reach me on dublineventguide@gmail.com with event information or with your suggestions.
6) If you don’t like this information resource, don’t feel bad! ;-) It is impossible to please everyone. I hope that you enjoy it and make use of it and stay with us for a long long time, but if you feel you need to leave, there is an Unsubscribe link at the very bottom of the mail.
7) The Dublin Event Guide is completely free, but I need people – like Rami J – who support me. In particular I need your help to gather the money for the Dublin Event Guide bills. Every month I have to pay EUR 170 and your contribution to that is needed and VERY much appreciated. If you can help with a small contribution, this will ensure the further-existence of the Dublin Event Guide for everyone. The tiny amount of 25 cent per week (or EUR 12 per year) will be brilliant and you can donate at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm If you can contribute a little more or want to choose the subscription option (EUR 12 per year) I love you even more. ;-) If you currently are a little under pressure and therefore want to give a bit less for now, that’s much appreciated too! Thanks!!!
8) If you like this publication, tell the world! Get everyone to LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and tell your friends and family that they should subscribe to the weekly e-mail at www.dublineventguide.com
9) If you are a Gmail user, you might have realised that Google has force-introduced new sub-Inboxes for you. There is a “Social” Inbox and a “Promotions” Inbox now in addition to the “Primary” Inbox. To get it back to the better way it was before, log in to your Gmail account and click on the “+” next to the Inbox tabs. Untick the “Social” and “Promotions” Inbox and you are back to the previous set up. If you leave the other Inboxes in place, the Dublin Event Guide will probably appear in promotions and it doesn’t belong there! If you “Star” this e-mail, it MIGHT from then on also bet back into your Primary Inbox, but there is no guarantee.
10) You can also help the Dublin Event Guide by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
11) I Know it would be better if this e-mail magazine arrived earlier in your Inbox and I am tryin to find a way. But please understand that I don’t make any money with it and therefore need to do my work on it in my spare time. So I am working every Thursday through the night (without sleep) and as soon as the newsletter is finished I am sending it to you. It takes me 24 hours to write it at the moment! I know that is slightly mad! But that is the reason why it is so late. I hope you understand.
That’s it! Next week you won’t have to read that again. Promise! ;-)
Enjoy cultural Dublin to the fullest,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I stumbled across a video that explains that being grateful makes you happier. So watch it (it is really interesting!) and then do the following: Think about who you are grateful to. Maybe a friend, maybe a colleague, or your partner or your parents or a teacher. Or maybe even a boss or a stranger that had an impact on you. Then either write down why you are so grateful to that person or at least take 5-10 quiet minutes and think about why you are so grateful. The next step will be hard for some. Like in the video clip, ring at least one of the people you are grateful to and tell them about it! You will feel better, I guarantee you! ;-)
Here is the video clip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHv6vTKD6lg

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Tara R, Deirdre G and John F were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week I recommend the “Movies in the Park” in Marlay Park on Saturday and Sunday and the Northside Music Festival on Sunday. In addition the great Fusion Sunday World Culture Market is taking place again in the Food Co-Op.
On Monay the Dublin Cycling Campaign has an interesting discussion and on Tuesday you have to go to the story telling event at Milk & Cookies Stories. On Thursday Opera in the Open near Christ Church and Cinema in the Open in Dundrum take place and the highlight of the next weekend starts already on Friday: 51 bands will perform on Friday in 13 venues for the Jack of Diamonds Rhythm & Roots Festival.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 15,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Speak Easy Café Bar closed down
You remember Sheebeen Chic? In 4 South Great George’s Street? A great place, buzzing and with lots of events. Well, they were doing a great job, but they seemingly nevertheless had trouble paying the rent.
The landlord wouldn’t have it and it got nasty. He wanted them out. Shebeen Chic staff even slept in the place to prevent the landlord to change the locks and to remove the pub tenants, but in the end they were kicked out and the landlord thought that he would do a better job in running the pub.
That’s when Speak Easy Cafe Bar was created. It immediately lost the regular customers, never recovered and was most of the time virtually empty. Now the landlord seemingly was bitten by Karma in the bum!
Rumours have it that the Speak Easy building was taken over by the banks and since last week the pub is closed. Many will say, that this is not a big loss to the Dublin Pub Scene. But closures are never a good sign.

Milk & Cookie Stories “The Secret Garden” Festival
Do you know Milk & Cookie Stories? It is a great volunteer-run initiative that invites everybody once a month to a storytelling night and a cookies bake-off. The monthly events are free and the popularity of Milk & Cookie Stories is growing and growing and growing. If you like telling a story or just would like to listen to good stories, you should go to their next event on Tuesday in Moxie Studios (check the details in this Dublin Event Guide).
The wonderful group who runs Milk & Cookie Stories are friends and supporters of the Dublin Event Guide and I am more than happy to support them as well. Today I would like to tell you about the Milk & Cookie Stories Secret Garden Festival on 16-18 August in Martinstown House, The Curragh, Co. Kildare. The festival is not free (EUR 38), but what is on offer is huge in comparison to the price.
The festival is a mix of storytelling, poetry, music and performing arts – including theatre, magic, circus and acrobatics. Storytelling by the camp fire; Spoken Word performances with expert storytellers, poets and writers; a music stage with – among many others – popular Dublin band Gypsy Rebel Rabble and activities like DodgeBall, Ultimate Werewolf and Waterfight and on top of all that some very interesting sounding workshops. Check out the full event details here www.facebook.com/events/199922520160883
You can buy your tickets via the link on the Facebook Event Page or get them at the next Milk & Cookies event on Tuesday. Tell them you read about it in the Dublin Event Guide and you will get some extra love. ;-)

Dublin Libraries & National Museum – Summer Programme for children
The Dublin Libraries and – separately – the different branches of the National Museum run different programmes / events in the summer for children. With the National Museums, these events are usually drop in classes and with the libraries in Dublin nearly always booking is required. If you have to entertain children over the summer check out www.museum.ie and the super slow library site www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/libraries/Events/Pages/all_events.aspx There are too many events to include them here week after week.

Marks & Spencer closing shops / Superquinn renaming all shops
On the same day during last week, two big news where announced in the retail world. And unfortunately both come with job losses.
Marks & Spencer will close 4 shops in Mullingar and Tallaght and the “Simply Food” stores in Naas and Dun Laoghaire. 180 jobs will go. The shops will close on 17 August already and the closure is because – according to M&S – the shops are unprofitable.
Musgraves, who own SuperValu, Superquinn and Centra and who are the biggest Irish private company and who bought Superquinn some while ago, are integrating Superquinn into the SuperValu brand. All Superquinn shops will be renamed by February 2014, but all 24 Superquinn shops will remain open. 102 jobs will go in the head office over 18 months, though. Superquinn was for a long long time an Irish institution and many will have fond memories of Superquinn stories, but the years when Superquinn was something special are long gone. Just another super market.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Film Screening
19:30 – 21:30, Fri 09 Aug
Exchange Dublin, Upper Exchange Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Elevate Arts Production is a group of DCU MA in Multimedia students, who did a group dissertation and have developed a short film as part of it.
The short film creatively expresses the ideas and philosophies behind the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow believed that we all have the ability to transcend our emotional and psychological state to a higher level of being, but that we also have a set of needs that are arranged in five hierarchical stages (physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem and self-actualization). Maslow’s ideas are very interesting if you are interested in the slightest in personal development and you can read more about it here.
Maslow’s theory will be interpreted in the short-film and expressed through the protagonist Laia, who travels through each
physiological and psychological stage within the film.
The film will be screened from 09-11 August in the Exchange all-day on a continual loop and the audience is encouraged to interact and assess the theory and maybe/hopefully reflect about it and develop an interest in personal growth.
The screening will start on Friday at 12:00 and in the evening from 19:30-21:00, the launch will take place.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition
09:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Aug
Dublin Castle, Dame Street, Dublin 2
This is a cool art installation! Every year for the last 11 years, a group of sculptors turns more than eighty tons of sand in a unique exhibition/installation outside in the Upper Courtyard of Dublin Castle.
This year’s theme for the sculptures is “The Bright Side” and will show what is good about Ireland and being Irish. Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 10 Aug
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Aug
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.
The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”
More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.
I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.
ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.
Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – Film Screening
12:00 – 22:00, Sat 10 Aug

Family Art Workshop
14:00 – 16:00, Sat 10 Aug
The Lab, 1 Foley Street, Dublin 1
Maeve Clancy, one of the artists currently showing in the group exhibition NINE in The Lab will run a workshop for children to create a 3D artwork through cut paper, looking at the huts and outdoor places built by children in the natural world.
Over the two hours, children will make their own small scale paper outdoor ‘space’ (it could be a tree house, forest or rocky environment), using plain and screen printed papers that were used in the construction of her large scale crannóg work for NINE.
Admission is free and the workshop is suitable for ages 6+.
NINE is a new family exhibition about being nine years old, the first of its kind to take place at Dublin City Council’s contemporary art space “The Lab”. “With work from Irish artists Alan Butler, Aideen Barry, Maeve Clancy, Sam Keogh and designer Oonagh Young, NINE explores a pivotal developmental time in a child’s life. This is identified as the age when children are expanding their ideas about the world and becoming autonomous human beings, yet still need lots of security and reassurance from their family group.”

12:00 – 22:00, Sun 11 Aug

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 11 Aug
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Front Lounge, 33 Parliament Street, Dublin 2
The Velvet Market is meant to take place on the first Sunday every month in the Front Lounge, but the website seems to indicate that there MIGHT be a market on 11 August. However no definite confirmation was there when I wrote this.
IF it takes place, you can get handmade, unique items, from cupcakes to photo prints and button art to jewellery. The market is organised by the LGBT community and many vendors are from that community, but it is explicitly open to all. Admission is free, but check out the Facebook Group below before you go as it might not take place.

Dublin Tribal Spirit – Drumming Circle
20:00 – 22:00, Fri 16 Aug
Lantern Centre, 17 Synge Street, Dublin 8
“Dublin Tribal Spirit” is a weekly event that gives you the great experience of a drumming circle with african drums and authentic tribal rhythms. Tom and Sinead, who run that event are providing lots of drums for it and teach you the rhythms.
There is no formal admission charge for this event, but donations are expected. The organisers bring their own 20-30 drums to it every week, so they are looking for donations to keep the event going.

Shut-up Dublin! – Designated quiet areas in Dublin
Environment Minister Phil Hogan did agree to Dublin City’s plan to declare eight areas of Dublin as “Quiet areas”. In these areas the maximum level of “noise” is 55 decibels during the day and 45 decibels during the night. A normal conversation from 1m distance is 60 decibels! So that means in these areas you are allowed to have just a quiet conversation during the day. In the night only a whisper is allowed, but since the 8 areas are parks, they are probably closed during the night anyway.
You can find all 8 zones here, but wait! Do I see the following parks on the list:
+ St Anne’s Park, Raheny, Dublin 5
+ Mount Bernard Park, Phibsborough, Dublin 7
St. Anne’s Park hosts the Rose Festival every year, usually with some musical entertainment over the weekend. And on a more daily basis, there is children’s play ground and “35 playing pitches, 18 hard-surfaced tennis courts, 4 Boules courts and a par-3 golf course”. See here in Dublin City’s website.
And the much smaller Mount Bernard Park has a 5-a-side pitch and Basketball Court.
A “Quiet Zone” where you want people and CHILDREN to enjoy themselves? Have you ever played a sport when you just quietly communicated with each other? Sign language maybe? Or can you imagine telling children to Shut Up on a playground?
This is a very odd, actually a totally nonsensical idea, Dublin City! I expect that the noise police will be set upon people enjoying themselves now?

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
