Hi all!
Welcome to another edition of Dublin’s only Event Guide for Free Events!
If you only subscribed to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you might get a false impression this week and if you are a regular reader you might be confused a little. This is what this newsletter/e-zine is: The Dublin Event Guide is full of free events, week after week. It is completely free (donations are VERY welcome, but no pre-condition to receiving this newlsetter/e-zine) and it is absolutely brilliant ;-). These are all important aspects of the Dublin Event Guide. But there is something different this week: The Dublin Event Guide is not normally arriving in your Inbox early on Friday, but rather late in the afternoon or even in the evening. Enjoy the super early arrival this week and be assured that it is still Friday morning DESPITE the fact that you already have received this week’s edition. ;-)
[ad]
The reason for the wonderfully early arrival is that I will be away this weekend and already started on Monday working on this week’s edition. But in a normal week I unfortunately can’t do that. The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is a 1-man operation and is a labour of love (i.e. non-commercial spare time activity). Normally I start working on it on a Thursday evening and then work – non-stop through the night – until it is finished, approx. 24 hours later on Friday afternoon/evening. This is not ideal, I know, because you all would like to get the newsletter earlier than it is currently sent. But until someone wants to sponsor the Dublin Event Guide to the level that I can give up my day job, it will have to stay like that. ;-) Until then I am just looking for very very small donations to keep the project on the road.
Maybe I should link donations and sending time? I could do this: The more money people send to help with the cost, the earlier the newsletter will arrive. Interesting idea! But what if nobody donates anything in a week? The newsletter won’t get to you at all then? Nooo, that doesn’t work. ;-)
While you are reading this, I am on my way to the airport to leave Dublin behind me for a few days, but I will leave you with a long list of all the cool, free things that take place this weekend and in the coming week in Dublin. Tell all your friends and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events. They can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide With more than 14,400 newsletter subscribers and more than 13,900 Facebook LIKES, you HAVE to help your friends, family and colleagues not to be left out! Click on LIKE if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.
If you get and use the Dublin Event Guide regularly and get good use from it, please also consider contributing a little bit of money to keep it going week after week. All the help I get is used to cover the cost of EUR 170 per month. Apart from searching for events and writing about them, every month I have to find EUR 170. This month we are still FAR away from the target and for just EUR 12 per year (That is less than 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide!) you can make a difference! At www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm you can help!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Today the Feel Good Slot quoteis for the worriers (not warriors!) among us. Have you ever achieved anything constructive by worriyng? So, is it then the best strategy you can apply? Because if it doesn’t serve any positive purpose, why would you choose to continue doing it?
The quote I found for you says:
“Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles – It empties today of its strength!” – Corrie Ten Boom

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Jun S was the only wonderful person who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This is the weekend of big concerts. Robbie Williams in the Lansdowne Road / Aviva Stadium on Friday. Neil Young in the RDS on Sat and Bon Jovi in Slane also on Sat. The steeply priced Taste of Dublin also takes place and then there is the non-free Dalkey Book Festival.
With all these non-free events, the free events have suffered a little. But there still is lots to do. I will be on holidays for a few days, so I will let you pick your own things and will make less suggestions than usually. But you should look at Bloom’s Day if you are interested (if not, you might agree with me in the THIS IS ODD SECTION). Then there is the IFI Open Day with lots of free cinema. The Viking Festival takes place in Clontarf on Saturday and is particularly suitable for the children.
Next week then, look out for the Bike Week events and on next Friday (21 June) for the National Muisc Day Events.

Internet Censorship to hit Ireland
EMI, Sony, Warner Music and Universal won a court case against UPC, Imagine, Vodafone, Digiweb, Hutchison 3G Ltd and Telefonica O2 Ireland Ltd forcing them to block access to PirateBay websites within 30 days (Eircom had already given in years ago). www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/0612/456177-pirate-bay-court/ This is the first time – but won’t be the last time – when the Irish SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) legislation that thanks to Junior Minister Sean Sherlock and the current Fine Gael government will bring various forms of Internet censorship to Ireland.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not in favour of Copyright Infringement and Online Piracy. It is illegal and therefore its status is clear. However, ThePirateBay.org does not provide illegal content, it is just a listing or linking site (not much different than Google in its concept). And blocking access to it, is not much different than blocking access to websites that list organisations that the government of the day does not like.If that was something we heard about from China, we would all be in uproar about the oppressive government.
Find out more about the law that is used to force the Internet block here www.stopsopaireland.com/#3 Worryingly, the same law can be used to block complete access to Facebook, YouTube and all other similar websites if ANYBODY from ANYWHERE in the world ever posted material on these platforms that infringes any copyright. Is the Chinese situation now that far fetched?
What does the ruling mean for you? If you use any of the listed providers for Internet connectivity, you will soon not be able to reach the Pirate Bay website anymore if you are a normal Internet user. However, the decentralised structure of the Internet will mean that a total block is close to impossible for people “in the know”.
And there is another interesting side-effect: The National Broadband Plan in Ireland for which your taxpayer money is used, is TOTALLY overspec’d now. Because 99% of users will never be able to use their super-high-bandwidth Internet connection to the max, if they don’t use it to download illegal material.

“HMV” to return to Dublin
It was reported in TheJournal.ie that “HMV” is to return to Ireland with a re-opening of the shops at Henry Street, Dundrum Town Centre and Liffey Valley and a possible return to Grafton Street, but in a different location. The shops are expected to re-open by mid-August.
Many former HMV customers – including myself – would hope that the new “HMV” will accept vouchers and giftcards from before the closure, but this is highly unlikely. The new “HMV” is a completely different company than the old HMV (that’s why for now I put it in ” “) and they have no obligation whatsoever to accept the vouchers. They could and I would be very happy if they did, but the exposure/financial loss will probably be too big for them to do it. Considering that they wanted to keep the name, they might be interested in re-establishing the reputation this name once had and that is the only chance for voucher and gift card holders.
Interestingly, the same company that bought HMV from its administrators also bought Xtravision recently and I wouldn’t give either of the two a huge chance to be successful in the long term, but we shall see.
I’d strongly warn, though, against buying any vouchers or gift cards from either of the companies (or ANY other company for that matter). You better give cash than vouchers.

Sweny’s – Daily James Joyce Readings
Because Sunday is Bloom’s Day it is appropriate to mention this regular event for James Joyce fans:
Sweny’s holds a number of readings of Ulysses and other works by James Joyce throughout the week and a schedule can be found here. In each of their reading groups, a section of the novel or a series of short stories are read and discussed and there might even be a biscuit and a cup of tea for you afterwards. Places are limited, so arrive early. Admission is usually free, but around Bloom’s Day there are a few non-free events as you can see on their website: www.sweny.ie

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Admission is free, but registration is required via writinghome2013@gmail.com
The decade between 1938 and 1948 was a time of immense revolutionary upheaval across Europe, but tends to have been characterised as a time of stagnation and isolation for Ireland. During these years, many Irish writers and artists travelled extensively across the continent, whilst several of their European counterparts arrived in Ireland. Taking these migrations as a starting point, the symposium will examine the history of this decade and its impact on Irish cultural memory.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 16 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

G8 Summit Protest March
13:00, Tue 18 Jun
St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
The next G8 Summit takes place in the rather untypical location of Fermanagh in Northern Ireland and like every time a G8 summit takes place, the ritual of unfocused but escalating protests and of relative heavy-handedness on the side of the police is a feature of this event.
In Dublin a Protest march takes place on Tuesday at 13:00. It starts at the Wolfe Tone Monument in St. Stephen’s Green and will go to the American Chamber of Commerce at 6 Wilton Place, Dublin 2. Unusual route!
If you are interested, also have a look at www.dubaltg8.org/ On Monday an “Alternative G8 Summit” takes place in the Teachers Club with talks and discussions.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Bloom’s Day – Odd in all aspects!?
I listed a number of events that take place for this weekend’s Bloom’s Day, but I have to make a big admission: I don’t get Bloom’s Day! About 90 years ago (1918-1922), an Irish writer (James Joyce), writes a mad novel, called Ulysses, that some praise as “one of the most important works of Modernist literature” and other call incomprehensible and utterly boring. In this book he writes about a normal day of the main character (Leopold Bloom) in Dublin. The date of that fictional day is 16 June 1904, just because that date had some significant in Joyce’s life because it was the date of his first date with his later wife.
So, an invented story with invented characters on a random date in a difficult to read book, which is boring.
And what happens more than 90 years later? People fall over each other to “celebrate” or “commemorate” this totally made-up day and all its made-up events. This is like re-playing and re-living Gulliver’s Travel year after year. And it is as historically relevant as re-creating a day from Bridget Jones’ Diary.
You might say “But why not!?” and you are right! But I ask you “But WHY??”. ;-) I don’t get it and probably never will!
If you are a a Bloom’s Day fan: Ignore me and enjoy the day. If you don’t get it either, just pretend Bloom’s Day never happened. Oh wait, it did not happen anyway. So no pretending needed!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
