Hi all!
I am back! ;-) I went away for a few days over the last weekend, but made sure that I am back for the next edition of the Dublin Event Guide. I was in Germany visiting family and have to admit that I was tempted not to come back. Tuesday was the hottest day of the year in Germany with more than 37 degrees … and I loved it. Considering that the warmest ever measured temperature in Ireland was 33.3 degrees on 26 June 1887, I don’t have much hope to ever experience the weather here that I like.
[ad]
Well, today is summer solstice, which is the astronomical start of Summer (and therefore the official start of Summer in most European countries) and I will stick to that (It would be too depressing to think that summer might already be half over, so don’t dare suggesting this to me.) So, since there is another 3 month of summer to come, with a bit of luck the nice weather here will continue and the temperatures will rise again another bit. I would even settle for around 20-25 degrees if it lasted for a while, so hopefully the weather gods will accept the deal or make a decent counter offer. ;-)
My shorter preparation time for this edition means that I might have a little less to tell you in the Dublin News section, but all events are there as you are used to. The only downside is that in comparison to the earlier sending last week, this week the Dublin Event Guide will reach you much later again, but interestingly the sending time has no significant impact on how many of you open and read it. I have to admit that I was surprised to see that!
Oh, but there is one problem I have to mention this week cause I need your help: We are starting the last week of the month and if you are a regular reader, you know that every month I need to find EUR 170 somewhere to pay for the bill to send the newsletter in a reliable and non-spam-suspicious way. Your donations are the essential source of these EUR 170, but this month, I only received EUR 100 until now. So, I need another 70 Euro. Can you help? How much does the Dublin Event Guide save you every week because you now know about all the cool free events? “Loads!”, I hear you saying!? And how much did your popularity grow among your friends since YOU are the one that knows what, where and when all is happening? “Hugely!”, you say? I didn’t expect anything else! ;-) The value is priceless, I know, but I don’t need much from you. Just EUR 1 per month, that’s less than a bar of chocolate, less than half a cupcake and less than a third (!!) of a cup of coffee, Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm either for a donation once-off of EUR 12 or more if you can or choose the subscription option on that page to give EUR 12 per year without having to think about it. Thanks!!!
Tell all your friends and spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, we are half-way to 15,000 people in the Dublin Event Guide Community! Your friends, families and colleagues can subscribe (for free) at www.dublineventguide.com and LIKE the Facebook group at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Click on LIKE yourself if you haven’t yet done so and get everyone to Subscribe.
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from teh Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Everything in our life is either a blessing or a lesson and – with the right attitude – every lesson turns into a blessing anyway. So today I have a sort of affirmation for you that might challenge some of you in certain circumstances. Take on this challenge and say it to your friends and supporters and to the people that make your life difficult. You don’t have to say it out loud, but when you say it (silently or aloud) say it with intend:
“Whether you pushed me or pulled me, drained me or fuelled me, loved me or left me, hurt me or helped me, you are a part of my growth, and seriously, I thank you.”

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Joe G, Helen G, Eoin O’B, Clodagh O’C, Aine G were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small donation and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
I normally don’t really look for events outside of Dublin, but when I was on TodayFM before the June Bank Holiday weekend, I had to look at some of the nationwide events as well because TodayFM is nationwide. I was surprised how busy this year is. I don’t think much of “The Gathering” for a variety of reasons, but it seems that the country folk ;-) make the most of it and are kept busy with a whole range of events. And again this weekend, there seems to be more happening outside of Dublin than in Dublin!
The Cork Midsummer Festival, the Glenties Busking Festival, Body & Soul, the Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival and Rocky Mayhem are just a few of the festivals over the weekend.
Luckily we have Dun Laoghaire and the Route des Princes Boat Race with the land activities that go with it. Street Feast, the Workman’s Club runs a Wellington Weekender, a 3-day festival. In Phoenix Park and a few other Parks the last event for the Bikeweek “Pedal in the Park” will take place for the whole family.
Next week the Dublin Pride Festival starts – if that is your thing – and the Dundrum Arts and Cultural Festival will start on Wednesday.
This is the weekend of big concerts. Robbie Williams in the Lansdowne Road / Aviva Stadium on Friday. Neil Young in the RDS on Sat and Bon Jovi in Slane also on Sat. The steeply priced Taste of Dublin also takes place and then there is the non-free Dalkey Book Festival.
With all these non-free events, the free events have suffered a little. But there still is lots to do. I will be on holidays for a few days, so I will let you pick your own things and will make less suggestions than usually. But you should look at Bloom’s Day if you are interested (if not, you might agree with me in the THIS IS ODD SECTION). Then there is the IFI Open Day with lots of free cinema. The Viking Festival takes place in Clontarf on Saturday and is particularly suitable for the children.
Next week then, look out for the Bike Week events and on next Friday (21 June) for the National Muisc Day Events.

Promote your product or non-free event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 14,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? Minimal, often even completely free! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Irish Architectural Archive closing for at least two months – Lack of funds
Because support grants were cut back and private-sector support from architects dramatically went down, the Irish Architectural Archive is in serious financial difficulties and has decided to close its doors, stop all services and make all staff temporarily redundant in July and August. The Archive Reading Room, Architecture Gallery and office will close at on Friday 28 June and will re-open on Mon 02 Sept. In the meantime intensified fundrasising efforts are underway to ensure that the closure won’t have to be extended.
Because the closure is time limited and because there is so little activity in the architectural sector, the closure will not have too serious an effect, but if the archive that keeps all architectural records a bit like a National Library for Architects would have to close for longer or permanently, this would be a serious issue as a signal about the state Ireland is in.

Sweny’s – Daily James Joyce Readings
Because Sunday is Bloom’s Day it is appropriate to mention this regular event for James Joyce fans:
Sweny’s holds a number of readings of Ulysses and other works by James Joyce throughout the week and a schedule can be found here. In each of their reading groups, a section of the novel or a series of short stories are read and discussed and there might even be a biscuit and a cup of tea for you afterwards. Places are limited, so arrive early. Admission is usually free, but around Bloom’s Day there are a few non-free events as you can see on their website: www.sweny.ie

Hughes & Hughes Bookshops to disappear
Hughes & Hughes is finally disappearing. Founded in 1986, the company got in trouble in 2010 and was put in receivership with EUR 9mio debts. The name (and only the name) was later bought by Derek Hughes and he re-opened six of the shops. Not too much later two shops closed (Dundrum and Dundalk) and now the three shops in St. Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, Santry and Ennis will become Eason franchises. The last remaining shop in Swords will – for now – stay a Hughes & Hughes shop because Eason was not interested in it, but I’d say that shop will not stay that much longer either.
Importantly for voucher or gift card holders: Hurry and redeem your voucher asap they will be accepted until Eason takes over, but after that your vouchers are worth nothing!! The Hughes&Hughes website is already suspended, the Twitter and Facebook accounts are dead and the rest will happen soon too. I found out a few days ago that the Loyalty Card scheme will end on 30 June and the final day to redeem any points will be on 30 Sept.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Pond Dipping
11:00, Sat 22 Jun
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
Pond Dipping, a “fun event exploring the weird and wonderful diversity of insects and mini-beasts living in and around the pond at the botanic gardens” is taking place on Sat and is suitable from age 8 upwards. Admission is free, but booking is required and it won’t be easy. Check the website below and read on here.
Events like that are usually very popular. They are free and are really interesting for kids. So it is understandable that places are limited and that pre-booking is required, but the Botanic Gardens have the most archaic idea of pre-booking. You have to download a PDF booking form, print it and fill it in manually. And then?? No idea! Maybe you have to send it by post? Or Carrier Pigeon? Or put it in a bottle and throw it in the sea? So you probably have to ring to find out how to register. Would it then not make sense to take the booking while you are alraedy on the phone? We know that the people in the Botanic Gardens are experts in their field and do a really great job, but the advance booking process is clearly not in the field they are experts in.
Because of this comlicated process I will also mention the NEXT event, which is on Sat 29 June:
It is a free workshop “Budding Botanists Flower Pressing Workshop”. Kids will get tips from the experts so that they can collect plants. Join the expedition through the gardens identifying and collecting suitable plants for pressing before constructing your own flower press, and starting your very own dried herbarium.
Admission is free, but pre-booking is required via the smae nonsensical process. Check out the website below.

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 22 Jun
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

Risk Lab – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 22 Jun
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This is your last chance! The Risk Lab is closing its door on Sun 23 June and if you haven’t been to the exhibition you only have this weekend:
We find it tricky to evaluate risk and chance! Do you still smoke despite the risk? And do you play lotto despite the tiny chance of winning? Why does the house always win? Is it better to do business with a bookie or a banker? How do emotions, scenarios, or media skew our assessment of the odds? And is it possible to recalibrate our perceptions of risk?
These are just some of the questions that Risk Lab, the latest experiment-based ‘Lab InThe Gallery’ show in the Science Gallery, asks.
Since the Science Gallery opened, I have been at every exhibition apart from one and I have never been disappointed. For that reason I always strongly recommend the Science Gallery events and again I suggest that you don’t miss this one!

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Home Thoughts from Abroad – Talk
18:30, Tue 25 Jun
Alliance Francaise, 1 Kildare Street, Dublin 2
“Home Thoughts from Abroad” with Gerry Feehily & Fintan O’Toole
“As Ireland picks itself up from economic bust, its towns and villages are emptying once again as its young seek work, perhaps new lives, abroad. What impact does this recurring exodus have on the country’s sense of itself and on the emigrant’s Irish identity?
In the midst of the social and cultural changes of the last thirty years, and as the EU inches towards deeper political integration, how European is Ireland? Indeed, how Irish is it?”
Admission is free, but registration via rsvp@alliance-francaise.ie with the subject “RSVP: Home Thoughts” is required.

Songs of the Soul – Music of Sri Chinmoy
19:30, Fri 28 Jun
Newman University Church , 87a St Stephens Green South, Dublin 2
I wrote about this event a number of months ago and ONLY heard good things about it. “Songs of the Soul” is a celebration of the music of Sri Chinmoy. Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007) was an internationally acclaimed musician, composer, artist, author and poet whose haunting melodies captivated audiences worldwide. Music was more than art, entertainment or even self-expression for him. It was language of the soul, a bridge from earth to heaven and he performed over 800 concerts to communicate his message. all of them free of charge, in the belief that the inner peace and happiness he sought to convey through his music was everyone’s birthright.
The concert in Dublin takes place on Friday and to reserve a ticket, call 085-1450880

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-) Flying fire around the world? About 5800km west from Dublin is a big cemetery and there is a big grave site with an “ eternal flame“, a gas flame that is not at all eternal but has been built to relight itself whenever the flame gets extinguished. In its history since 1967 the flame has been re-lit by hand at least twice, I guess with a lighter or a match stick. The man who is buried there was in Ireland in 1963 and visited Dunganstown near New Ross in Co. Wexford, where his ancestors had lived before they emigrated to America. This year is the 50th anniversary of this visit and he is so important to Co Wexford that a big celebration will take place. No problem with all that! …but who was the genius that came up with the idea so send a plane to the USA to collect a flame that was lit on the “eternal” flame on his graveyard and to bring that to Dublin, then hand it over to the army in a big ceremony who would hand it over to the Navy, who then will bring the flame by Naval ship to Co. Wexford? I hope that genius is also paying for all that and not you and I! Considering that the “eternal” flame is anything but eternal, could the people in Dunganstown or New Ross not just have used a Zippo lighter or a match stick that was bought in the USA to light a candle here? What an odd, unnecessary and totally nonsensical procedure! You wonder who was the guy? Well, he was kind of famous, but that still doesn’t justify that odd flame transport. It was John F. Kennedy, the former US President who visited Ireland only a few months before he was assassinated in 1963 and who is buried on Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
