Hi all!
It is still bright when you get the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!? What went wrong there? ;-) Thank goodness for the clock change. :-P It is really late again, but the weekend is just starting so hopefully you will still get lots out of it.
Last week I had the honour to take part in the very last guided tour at the Georgian House Museum No. 29 and it was a a great tour. I still can’t believe that the ESB has decided to terminate the guided tour and listen to that: The person who is in charge of that decision has most likely never experienced the tour! Shocking if people decide things that they have not the slightest clue about, isn’t it? Well, the “Save No. 29” initiative is not giving up yet and you can and should still support it at www.facebook.com/SaveNo29 Just click on LIKE.
[ad]
Another little stroy from the last few days: I was asked during the week by a few people why I write this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week. Why I spend 35 hours of my life on something that doesn’t pay me a cent. And I can imagine that a few of you wonder about that too. Well, the answer is quite simple: I am very passionate about cultural life in Dublin and as long as people tell me regularly how much the Dublin Event Guide does help them, I will continue. But I also have to admit that I am looking for ways to get some compensation for the many hours that I am investing in it and I am sure you agree that this is only fair. The Dublin Event Guide will always be free, so I will have to look for other more inspired ways to solve this challenge. If you have any suggestions, let me know at dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will show my gratitude to you! ;-)
The weather is still cold, but dry, so we can finally start looking forward to the summer festivals and the first festival is starting this week. It is the Five Lamps Arts Festival and while the events are still indoors, it kicks off a new year full of varied cultural events and who w ould complain about that, ;-)
So, now my regular appeal to spread the word so that our Dublin Event Guide Community gains further strength:
If you like learning about all these events every week, please tell others about it! There is no better confirmation that you like, endorse and support what I am doing than you telling loads of people. If you work in a company, are part of a club/organisation/association or have any other suggestion how we could reach lots more people, please contact me.
Tell everyone about the Dublin Event Guide and that they all should subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and if you are on Facebook, also click on LIKE at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and click on SHARE to let others know about the Facebook Page as well.
Please also consider a donation. I need and much appreciate donations from you, the readers to cover the cost. You can help with your donation of the tiny sum of EUR 1 per month. And that EUR 1 per month (or EUR 12 per year) will ensure that I can pay the bills for the Dublin Event Guide week after week. I need EUR 170 per month. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to help. Thanks!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
For today’s Feel Good Slot quote is a clear instruction for you:
Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Brian L, Judit S and Margaret B were the wonderful people that helped with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
This weekend I suggest you go to the Temple Bar Food Market on Saturday in case you haven’t been for a while. (If you are TCD student you will most likely NOT do that because tonight (Friday) is the TCD Ball, so we will see lots of dressed up people in town tonight that tomorrow won’t feel too well??)
On Sunday I suggest you go to eh Pure Vintage Market at the Dublin Food Co-op and to Farmleigh House where the Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival will take place (even if the CHerry Blossoms find it much too cold to peek out).
During the week, the Trinity Week at TCD will take place and the Five Lamps Art Festival is starting. There are more Dublin: One City – One Book events and there are a few recitals and talks all over Dublin.

No 29 – Georgian House Museum – Update
No. 29, the Georgian House Museum closed on Thursday and will be substantially altered when it re-opens in about 6 weeks. From 20 June, the doors will open again, but there won’t be any more guided tours and the museum will stay closed on Sundays and Mondays.
I had the honour to take part in the very last guided tour on Thursday and it was a momentous event when an era came to an end after 22 years of guided tours in No. 29.
Is that it? you might wonder and the answer is a clear NO! I still need your help because the “Save No. 29” initiative will continue and by clicking on LIKE at www.facebook.com/SaveNo29 you are helping that initiative.
If you didn’t make it to the museum in the last few days of its existance as a guided museum, you can only hope that the No. 29 initiative will be successful, because the house truly comes to life with the passionate tour provided by the Tour Guides.
Find out a bit more about the museum here www.esb.ie/no29 and make sure you LIKE the Save No. 29 initiative at www.facebook.com/SaveNo29

Dublin’s New Cultural Quarter
It has been announced that a new cultural quarter is planned for Dublin. It is the area at and near Parnell Square and it is planned to moce the Central Library from its current home in the ILAC Centre to a number of buildings on the North Side of Parnell Square. 60 mio is the price of the redevelopment and it won’t open until 2017.
It sounds interesting and I am looking forward to learning more about it. Read some initial information here and here www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/cultural-quarter-plan-for-parnell-square-1.1349351

Suspended Coffee Ireland
Have you heard about the Suspended Coffee idea? It is a concept that allegedly comes from Italy and after recently a Facebook story made the rounds, a group of people in Ireland have started working on it. The idea is that you can go to a participating cafe or even restaurant and buy two coffees. One of them is for you and the other is “suspended”. The supended coffees are paid but will be kept by the cafe until someone comes in who couldn’t otherwise afford it and askes for a suspended coffee. The cafe then gives a coffee to that person in need for free because you had pre-paid it. Sounds like an interesting comcept and if you want to find out more or want to take part, go to www.facebook.com/pages/Suspended-Coffee-Ireland/439782206101899

One City – One Book
Every April the “Dublin: One City, One Book” event series takes place in Dublin. It is organised by the Dublin City Public Libraries and this year’s book is “Strumpet City” by James Plunkett. Throughout the month a number of events will take place and the website www.dublinonecityonebook.ie/ will list them all. You are invited to buy and read the book.
Where possible and where appropriate I will also include them in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
In previous years the chosen book for the “One City, One Book” event were for example “Dubliners” by James Joyce in 2012, “Ghost Light ” by Joseph O’Connor in 2011, “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde in 2010, “Dracula” by Bram Stoker in 2009, “Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathan Swift in 2008.

Five Lamps Arts Festival

The festival runs from 09-28 April and will feature events around literature, dance, music, film, visual art and theatre. Many events will be free and as much as possible, I will include the free events in the Dublin Event Guide.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Imperfect: Letterpress x 3 – National Print Museum
10 April – 31 May
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
“Imperfect: Letterpress x3” is an exhibition by Joey Hannaford, Mervi Pakaste and Jeff Pulaski at the National Print Museum and features work from Joey Hannaford, University of West Georgia, Mervi Pakaste, Kansas State University and Jeff Pulaski, Wichita State University.
“In their letterpress work, they seek to extend their design processes beyond the computer screen. Instead of strictly imposing order, they try to utilise the letterpress medium in ways that encourage interpretation, spontaneity and improvisation. The seductive embossing of the page and textural qualities of the prints add uniqueness to the end results. The physical letterforms become an equal partner in the process as their age and history are revealed. Through this traditional form of printing they tell new stories, in a modern context. Despite working with a common process, each one has a dedication to express an individual voice.”
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri: 09:00-17:00, Sat-Sun: 14:00-17:00

Liberty Hall, 33 Eden Quay, Dublin 1
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is not a politic-free zone, but I tend to leave out the extreme positions (on left and right) and their events and the word “anarchist” indicates a rather extreme leaning in one particular direction. On the other hand, a bookfair can’t be that extreme by itself, but is it really a bookfair or is it a political event? I am not sure, but nevertheless I am exceptionally including this event…and I hear there will be book stalls.
The Dublin Anarchist Bookfair 2013 will take place in Liberty Hall for the 8th time and the theme is “1913-2013 – Rebuilding a Movement from Below”.
A whole range of discussions and lectures will take place and a full schedule is here www.wsm.ie/sites/default/files/DABF2013Programme.pdf The Facebook Page below is linking to a few event pages.
It doesn’t say anywhere that the event is free, but there is no “admission charge” reference in sight either, so it should be free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 07 Apr
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Inspired by the project “Our Language Garden” the objective of the talk is to reflect on the emotional quality of words in the native tongue when living abroad, and also to reveal the possibilities of their use through technologies like “skype”. Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Three summer gigs with 120,000 people in Phoenix Park
Festival Republic and MCD have applied for a license to run three concerts in Phoenix Park this summer and Dublin City is considering granting the license but is allowing everybody to submit their opinion and concerns until 12 April.
Phoenix Park is a great, big place and having concerts there would be making good use of the park. However, many are wondering if the size of the planned concerts with 40,000 people for each concert is not too big for Phoenix Park. This is not because they won’t get filled, but because proper crowd control is a SERIOUS challenge in Ireland. www.dublinpeople.com/article.php?id=2228&l=100
It is either totally over-controlled (like a Chinese New Year Festival event on Smithfield Plaza a few years ago where the queues to get into a fenced area were 4 hour (!!) long) or it is totally under-controlled (like the Swedish House Mafia gig in Phoenix Park last year). At the Swedish House Mafia Gig in Phoenix Park in 2012 there were 45,000 people and seven got stabbed and one man got killed.
As a consequence from this bad experience, many people – especially around Phoenix Park – are seriously concerned about the three concerts. Interestingly, though, the Swedish House Mafia performed at two gigs in Canada in February with a total of 60,000 people and there were NO incidences.
So are people in Dublin just not able to behave? Or is it just that we unfortunately have a small bad element? Odd!
Maybe it is a societal problem? Alcohol related? I walked down Grafton Street at around 16;00 on St. Patrick’s Day and it was outrageous. A clear indication of the societal problem in Dublin?

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
