Hi all!
Some challenges through a spanner in the works last night and I lost a good few hours of my limited working time. It means that this Dublin Event Guide is really really late again and I apologise for it. If all had worked well, I think it could have been finished today at around 17:00 and I would have been proud of that. :-)
[ad]
But there are more than 170 events in this edition, so it is well worth checking out.
By the way, it seems that the smart phone version at m.dublineventguide.com is acting up a little. It takes until Sunday till next week’s Friday appears. I am not sure why that is, but hopefully will be able to fix it at some stage. It is not too big a problem, I guess because you still have 4 days to plan next week’s Friday from when it re-appears. This issue only affects the smart phone edition, it does not affect the e-zine or the website version.
I don’t want to delay the sending of this edition any further, so let me quickly add my regular appeal to spread the word so that our Dublin Event Guide Community gains further strength:
If you like learning about all these events every week, please tell others about it! There is no better confirmation that you like, endorse and support what I am doing than you telling loads of people. If you work in a company, are part of a club/organisation/association or have any other suggestion how we could reach lots more people, please contact me.
Tell everyone about the Dublin Event Guide and that they all should subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and if you are on Facebook, also click on LIKE at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and click on SHARE to let others know about the Facebook Page as well.
Importantly, I also need to appeal to you to consider a donation. I need and much appreciate donations from you, the readers to cover the cost and the last four weeks the donations were a little thin, which means tht this month’s bill is still a good bit away from being paid.. You can help with your donation of the tiny sum of EUR 1 per month. And that EUR 1 per month (or EUR 12 per year) will ensure that I can pay the bills for the Dublin Event Guide week after week. I need EUR 170 per month to cover the cost. Go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm to help. Thanks!
And continue also to help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide because the company you buy from gives a small commission to the Dublin Event Guide. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full week,

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
For today’s Feel Good Slot I selected something more reflective, It is not a quote that wants to leave you with a warm feeling. Instead it is one that kicks you in the backside and requires you to work first before you get the warm feeling. That way, though, is the longer lasting way:
You can’t fill your mind with negative thoughts and expect a positive outcome.
So, what could you do instead??

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Sinead D and Nicola R were the wonderful people that helped with a donation. All the support is much appreciated!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
If you haven’t seen the current Science Gallery exhibition “Oscillator”, then you have to hurry. Only two more days left as the exhibition closes on Sunday. But the good news is that the Science Gallery is open on Saturday and on Sunday!
On Saturday afternoon, a must go event is the Messiah on the Street performance in Temple Bar. It is only one hour and it is just cool because of its quirkiness towards the end. Well. “Messiah” is not a bad piece or works by Händel, but the crowd participation is what raises this performance above others. I won’t tell you more! :-)
In the evening the “Traditional Music from Across the EU” is an interesting event. Not everyone’s taste, but something to try maybe.
On Sunday I will probably go to the Fusion Sunday Market.
On Tuesday the Urban Knight event sounds really interesting, but I will go to a Science Gallery event with Richard Wiseman (EUR 6), which should be really cool.
On Wednesday there are a few interesting Dublin: One City, One Book events, but they happen at a time that doesn’t work for me. …I should give up the day job! ;-)
On Thursday check out the Radio Programme Workshop, especially if you are female and in the right age group!!

No 29 – Georgian House Museum – Update
No. 29, the Georgian House Museum might be closed, but I think the ESB didn’t expect the reaction. Joe Duffy’s Liveline radio programme on RTE1 discussed the situation at No. 29 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week and podcasts/recordings are available from the Liveline website at www.rte.ie/radio1/liveline/ I was invited on Wednesday to make a comment live on air, but the main contribution was John Kelly’s on the same day, who was one of the great tour guides at No. 29.
The campaign to save No. 29 in its guided from continues and your continued help is needed. Have a look at www.facebook.com/SaveNo29 and LIKE the website, please. Find out a bit more about the museum here www.esb.ie/no29 Check this week’s This is Odd section in this Dublin Event Guide as well. Some really interesting stuff about the ESB, their profits and the Irish government’s cowardly position.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Imperfect: Letterpress x 3 – National Print Museum
10 April – 31 May
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
“Imperfect: Letterpress x3” is an exhibition by Joey Hannaford, Mervi Pakaste and Jeff Pulaski at the National Print Museum and features work from Joey Hannaford, University of West Georgia, Mervi Pakaste, Kansas State University and Jeff Pulaski, Wichita State University.
“In their letterpress work, they seek to extend their design processes beyond the computer screen. Instead of strictly imposing order, they try to utilise the letterpress medium in ways that encourage interpretation, spontaneity and improvisation. The seductive embossing of the page and textural qualities of the prints add uniqueness to the end results. The physical letterforms become an equal partner in the process as their age and history are revealed. Through this traditional form of printing they tell new stories, in a modern context. Despite working with a common process, each one has a dedication to express an individual voice.”
Admission is free and the opening hours are Mon-Fri: 09:00-17:00, Sat-Sun: 14:00-17:00

Messiah on the Street
13:00 – 14:00, Sat 13 Apr
Fishamble Street, Old City Temple Bar, Dublin 8
Every year on 13 April Händel’s Messiah is performed in Fishamble Street and – luckily for all working people – this year this event falls on a weekend again. Our Lady’s Choral Society is the performing choir and Ross Scanlon is the soloist. however, there is some crowd interaction as well ;-) and it is good fun.
The reason for that perdomance on that date is because it was performed for the first time near that location in 1742. The performance in our time is out on the street and it is not the full “Messiah” but only the well known bits, but if you have no other plans, you should definitely make it over to that little street near Christ Church.

The Phenomenon Bruno Gröning – Documentary Screening
11:00 – 17:30, Sun 14 Apr
West County Hotel, Old Lucan Rd, Chapelizod, Dublin 20
The documentary “The phenomenon Bruno Gröning- On the tracks of the miracle healer“, shows the events surrounding Bruno Gröning. In autumn of 1949, close to 30,000 people were drawn to the Traberhof in Rosenheim (Germany) daily. Newspapers, radio and television reported: “It is beyond reason. Bruno Gröning heals the crippled, the blind, the deaf…“
Today the Circle of Friends of Bruno Gröning continue his work and spreading the word about his healings through screenings of the documentary.
The event runs from 11:00-17:30 and it says “including 2 intermissions”. Checking what that means, I found that the documentary is in three parts and is 282 minutes (!!) long. Wow, that’s 4 hours and 40 minutes!
Admission is free and donations are appreciated.

Great Ireland 10 km Run

The race will take place in Phoenix Park and goes over 10 km. Approx. 1000 people will take part and very well known athletes will be among them. There are junior and mini races as well for the children.
Like most races, the event is not free, but some still like going to to the free part of it: being a spectator. And they enjoy the atmosphere and to cheer on the runners.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 14 Apr
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Life Solo Art Performance – Mineki Murata
19:00, Mon 15 Apr
Drawing Project, Crofton Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
Unit 1 is inviting to a live performance by Mineki Murata (Japan) in The Drawing Project. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Sounds good at first, but unfortunately the organisers don’t give any details about the performance (What is the performance? Is it dance? Is it painting? Is it music? Is it a play?) and they also don’t tell us where the Drawing Project is. I bet the building on Crofton Road has a house number and it would be super to mention that so that people don’t have to search up and down Crofton Road.
I have some hope though that the Facebook Page will be updated before Monday so that you can find out more about the performance and the location.

City Intersections – Dublin Port & Docklands
19:00, Tue 16 Apr
Workman’s Club, 10 Wellington Quay, Dublin 2
City Intersections – Session #10 will look at “Dublin Port and Docklands”.
“Everything Dublin has tried to become, all its successes, all its terrible failures, are embodied in the docklands to the east of the city. Bounded by Sheriff Street and Ringsend village, containing the IFSC and the Grand Canal Dock, it’s not so much a place of diversity as it is a collection of contrasts. Dublin City Council have launched a new plan for the area, open to public comment only until May 10th, and this session of City Intersections will work to get people talking about this odd place at the edge of the city, central and apart at the same time.”
Speakers will be Eamonn O’Reilly (CEO Dublin Port) and Seaon O’Laoire (MOLA Architects)
Admission is free.

Plant Conservation and DNA – Lecture
15:00, Wed 17 Apr
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
The Lecture “Plant Conservation and DNA” with Noeleen Smyth will take place on Wednesday.
When dealing with extremely rare or threatened species in the wild, one crucial aspect is conserving both the species itself and its genetic variability. A decrease in genetic variability within a species affects its overall health, has inbreeding issues for the plant and reduces the fitness of the plant in dealing with any environmental change. This talk will focus on the work of Botanic Gardens researchers on the genetic variability of Irish rare and protected species and rare Oceanic Island endemic plant species.

The Queens Primer – Talk
18:30, Thu 18 Apr
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
In 1564 Queen Elizabeth I expressed a desire to speak the Irish language. An Anglo-Irish scholar was commissioned to develop a teaching aid and so he set about the task of creating a small ‘primer’ to teach the Queen to ‘speake Iryshe’ like a native. The little 16th century book was hand-written using pen/ ink and bound as a one off manuscript for the Queen’s private use. 447 years later the book went into print for the first time.
This lecture by Anne Brady is the story of why this book went into print and how short run digital print has revolutionised the publishing industry. This limited edition book would not have been possible to produce to this incredibly high standard of finish if it were not for the technological advances and current innovations in the print, ink and paper industries.
Admission is free.

Academy Discourse: Spatial Justice, Housing and the Financial Crisis
22 Apr – 18:00
Royal Irish Academy, Academy House, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2
The Academy Discourse “Spatial Justice, Housing and the Financial Crisis” with Professor Danny Dorling, professor of human geography in the University of Sheffield, will take place. Admission is free, but tickets are required via the website.
“In recent decades, across much of the affluent world, when there were economic good times some benefited much more than others. It may not have been fair but even though the gaps grew, few complained. When the bad times hit, they again hit some harder than others, usually much harder. People complained, but by then it was often too late. At the heart of the current financial crisis are issues of housing. Our fears over not being well-housed and our aspirations to move on up may have been milked by those most interested in making a short term profit; but when did those fears first grow and why were such impossible aspirations stoked?”

Private or Semi-state – The Irish Government’s confusion about the ESB
You know by now that I am very passionate about the Georgian House Museum Number 29 and that I got myself involved with the Save No. 29 initiative (www.facebook.com/SaveNo29) and luckily a good bit is talked about it now. In this context, I had a look at a few numbers and contexts. On 21 March, the Dail TD Kevin Humphreys presented the case of the downgrade of Number 29 and asked the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar to ensure that the tour guides will be retained and the opening days & hours will stay as they were before the closure. www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8RSkS3dgv8
Ciaran Cannon (a junior minister in an unrelated department) answered on behalf of Leo Varadkar with an atrociously weak and rambling reply. But he said a really important thing “The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport has no responsibility in this matter. […] The museum is owned by the Electricity Supply Board and is run by the ESB in association with the National Museum of Ireland. […], the ESB is an independent commercial entity and must organise its resources in the manner it considers it appropriate.” And what he really means is: We are not responsible and we will not get involved.
Now it is known that the ESB has to save EUR 280mio by 2015 and has already saved EUR 200mio. But we must also look at the fact that the ESB made a profit after taxes in 2012 of a whopping EUR 194mio. And guess who gets EUR 78mio of that profit? You guessed it!? The government gets that money because the ESB is a semi-state company. www.businessetc.thejournal.ie/esb-profits-829834-Mar2013/
To me, that means that the government very much has a responsibility in this issue. You can’t claim that it is an independent company on one hand and on the other hand take EUR 78mio because you own a big junk of it. Not that separate and independent it seems! If the government took just 1% of that money from one year and put it into No 29, the museum could run WITH guided tours for more than 2 years. And if that 1% was added to the money the ESB is allegedly prepared to continue to pay for the museum, the museum could run for more than 10 (!!!) years.
So, dear government, you can’t have it both ways: Either the ESB has nothing to do with you, then keep your fingers out of the money pot OR it is part owned by you, then we expect you to use your influence for the benefit of tourism and people living in Ireland.
