Hi all!
Great news! The Dublin Event Guide app “Dublin for Free” has been shortlisted in the Best Tourism App category of The Appys. The Appys ( www.theappys.ie ) is an award for the “Very Best in App Development & Design”. The competition is all about the app itself, not for the content, so the praise for making it to the shortlist is all for iQ Content ( www.iqcontent.com ) who created that wonderful app with and for me. I need you to keep your fingers crossed now, it would be great to win that competition. ;-)
[ad]
Your task in all this? Just keep spreading the word! :-) There are now more than 12,500 readers of the weekly e-zine/newsletter and the Facebook Page has more than 11,000 Likes. But there is absolutely no reason, why not twice or three times as many people should know about and use the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. So with all the great improvements in e-zine design, and web site design and with the great app, the goal for the next 12 months is to increase the reach significantly. Will you help me?
Tell everybody you know about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)! The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-zine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and this section is for the people that want to remind that despite all, life is great and it is important to be alive.
Today I have a challenge for you. It is a simple challenge but in our world of jobs and salaries and obligations it might not be sooo simple for many. Nevertheless, take some time, listen to it and think about it. The challenge is “What if money was no object?” and it is n the context with your job/main occupation. What would you do/want to do if money was no object? Would you do what you are doing now? Or would you change something? Or everything?
Have a look at this video clip to listen to the British/American philosopher Alan Watts talking about it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=siu6JYqOZ0g (When you watch the clip, ignore the subtitles if possible. There are quite a number of mistakes in them!)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Anna-Lena F, Margaret G, Margarita G, Martin O’M, Arthur D and Serena F were so wonderful to help with a donation. We are still EUR 53 away from the required EUR 170 and the next bill will already arrive next week, so please consider a donation! All the support is much appreciated!!
Have you helped? Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that everyone will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and I need your help!
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great, (that’s only 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help me to cover the cost (I need to “find” EUR 170 per month to cover the cost and anything above will be invested in improving the Dublin Event Guide!).
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down
The main events for me this week will be the “Feed the 5000”, the lighting of the REAL and natural Christmas Tree again in O’Connell Street and the Aviation Fair near Dublin Airport. But there is also the Astro Expo and the Dublin Flea Market that are interesting. By the way, I am not that mad about Christmas Trees that I am frozen with amazement and delight upon the switching on of the lights, but the programme around it is usually quite good and there is a buzz around the place, so that part I like. ;-)
During the week there are a few interesting lectures/talks if that is your thing, but I won’t get time to go to any of them unfortunately. So, I will make the most out of the weekend instead! :-) Maybe you will do the same!?

Raffle for Scuba Diving and Phone
I don’t usually do that, but a few good friends will go to Haiti soon to stay in tents without water and electricity for two weeks to build houses with the Haven Partnership for people that are STILL living in temporary huts after the earthquake in Haiti more than 2 years ago. In addition to a week of hard work, everybody who is prepared to help, has to bring EUR 4,500 for building materials. So my friends have to raise funds and one of the ideas is a raffle. You buy a ticket for EUR 5 and have a very good chance to win a Scuba Diving course or a high-quality Nokia phone. Click on the yellow-ish banner below to enter! www.dalkeyscubadivers.com/scuba_competition/scuba_competition.html

Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App
Did you try out the new smart phone app? I will leave this information here for one more week, so that everybody has seen it! :-)
“Dublin for Free” is the Dublin Event Guide on the go! It is a web app that works on most smartphones and will allow you to bring the “Dublin Event Guide (For Free Events)” with you when you are out and about. It will also allow you to check out the current events when you are away from your computer or when the e-zine arrives late AGAIN on a Friday evening. The web app works on Android and on iOS and you can directly access it by putting m.dublineventguide.com in your mobile browser. There is an app in the iOS store and it will be in the Google Play store in the next few days, but you don’t need to dwonload anything.
When you went to m.dublineventguide.com on your browser and you want to put an icon on your homescreen, just do this:
For iOS:
+ When you’re looking at a web page, just hit “+” and select “Add to Home Screen”.
For Android:
+ Bookmark m.dublineventguide.com
+ Go to the home screen you want to add the link to
+ Long-press in an empty space to bring up the “Add to Home Screen” menu
+ Select “Shortcuts”
+ Select “Bookmark”
+ Choose your bookmark!
I will exlain a few features in the coming weeks, but for now, I suggest you check it out and explore it for yourself. The web app will not replace the weekly newsletter, instead it will complement it and will make the Dublin Event Guide better usable.
This wonderful app was created by iQ Content for free for you!! iQ Content is a user experience design consultancy. They design and build digital experiences for mobile, tablet and desktop that help clients achieve results for their business. And the great people in iQ Content are Dublin Event Guide Users, but wanted to make it more usable and mobile, so they created a wonderful new design, built a backend, beautified the e-zine AND wrote an app for us, Absolutely amazing! And all that for you for free. Check them out at www.iqcontent.com It was a big team that worked on it for thousands of hours (!!) and I will list all the names in the coming weeks, but today, I want to thank the Managing Director of iQ Content Morgan McKeagney and the Director of Innovation Ciarán Harris who was the main driver behind the project and who is an amazingly supportive and hard working individual who you can absolutely rely on.
If you like the app and want to join me in thanking iQ Content for all the work they did, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject “THANKS IQ CONTENT” I will aggregate your thanks and will forward them.

Nice Christmas Tree replaces Ugly Tree in O’Connell Street – Good News!
The Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street was once a beautiful tall fir tree ( www.geodublin.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Dublin-at-Christmas-Christmas-Tree-in-Ireland.jpg ), before in 2008 Dublin became all modern and artificial and decided to replace nature with a EUR 300,000 (!!) expensive and very colourful flashy metal bubble tree ( media.nowpublic.net/images//cc/e/cce8f57131ffdbc3ce9e7f30c426e32b.jpg ).
But there is good news! Someone realised that the decision four years ago was a bad one and the ugly tree got banned from O’Connell Street according to the Evening Herald on 13 Nov (www.herald.ie/news/glass-christmas-tree-to-leave-oconnell-st-3292082.html ).
Instead a proper fir tree will be back in O’Connell Street and the “ugly tree” has been moved to Smithfiel. …allegedly to “boost footfall in other areas of the city centre over the Christmas period”. Hmmm, not very likely that an artificial tree will attract more people to Smithfield! Interestingly the same article says that “A council spokesperson revealed that the decision was taken to move the glass tree from O’Connell Street because of traffic considerations.” So there are TWO official lines for undoing the bad decision from 2008. ;-)
The important bottom line? O’Connell Street will get a proper and nice Christmas tree! That’s definitely good news!

An Bord Pleanála refuses new Liberty Hall planning appication
Did you see this new development? Dublin City Council had granted the Trade Union SIPTU planning permission to demolish Liberty Hall and rebuild a 22-storey building on the site, but An Bord Pleanála has refused permission to SIPTU because the deemed it too high and therefore too dominating and visually intrusive. This was SIPTU’s second attempt and the whole process is running since 2006 and won’t be over for another long time. The full information with a picture is here www.rte.ie/news/2012/1116/liberty-hall.html

I have some small technical problems with this section, so there will be a bit of a further delay, but the next company introductions will be here soon!
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Poetic Arpilleras
22 Nov – 15 Dec
Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place (near National Gallery), Dublin 2
The Instituto Cervantes and the Embassy of Chile in Ireland invite you to the “Poetic Arpilleras” exhibition of the Chilean academic and curator Roberta Bacic, who lives in Northern Ireland.
The exhibition shows 30 Chilean “arpilleras” of various sizes. (The arpilleras are created by hand sewing scraps of materials and appliqueing onto burlap. Often arpillera dolls are used to add the three dimensional perspective. Wool is used to sew around the piece, either with a needle or crochet, to give it the shape of a picture to be hung on a wall) of various sizes.) The arpilleras tell about the history, society and culture of contemporary Chile.
Roberta Bacic has gathered a vast collection of these valuable pieces throughout many years, devoting time to acquire, recover, conserve and study them since the early 2000s. dublin.cervantes.es/FichasCultura/Ficha84128_16_2.htm

100 Objects
23 Oct – 02 Dec: National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7
Fintan O’Toole has chosen 99 remarkable objects, each of which opens a window on to an important moment in Irish history. You are invited to help choose the 100th object. Most come from the great trove of the National Museum of Ireland, a resource that is itself one of the wonders of Ireland. Others are from a variety of other institutions. They are not intended to be the 100 most remarkable objects on the island, or even to be a representative sample of the great collections. They are chosen simply for their ability to illuminate moments of change, development or crisis.
The exhibition in Collins Barracks shows the 10 items shortlisted to be the 100th object in the series. There is a public vote online (100objects.ie) and a ballot sheet in the Museum where you can help to choose which object defines our modern times.
Open: Tuesday-Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sunday 14:00-17:00. Closed Mondays and Bank Holidays

Radio Joinery presents Sound +/- Vision, a “three-day long event of talks, performance and music which will be additionally broadcast online. While setting up a temporary radio-station is a crucial element of the project, it will also celebrate not so much the idea of radio itself, but radio as a means of creating a shared experience. The project will explore the notion of live experience versus its online relay; the getting together, listening and seeing versus the radio-station as a one-sided experience.”

Feeding the 5000
12:00 – 17:00, Sat 24 Nov
Wolfe Tone Square, Jervis Street, Dublin 1
“Feeding the 5000” is an interesting event this Saturday. Surprisingly ;-) it does exactly what it says on the tin: 5,000 Dubliners are invited to enjoy a hot vegetarian meal made entirely out of fresh misshapen vegetables that would otherwise go to waste. And with that you will get apple juice made from wonky but wonderful apples that would otherwise go unloved in orchards across the country. So come along and as long as some food is left, enjoy this free meal.
All this will be provided completely free but with the aim to raise awareness about the scale of the problem of food waste in Ireland. Find out more about the European Week of Waste Reduction here www.ewwr.eu/pre-home and about the Feeding the 5000 initiative on the website below.
Tristram Stuart, founder of Feeding the 5,000 in the UK will be present to give a talk on food waste at 12:30 and three chefs will give cooking demonstrations (13:00: Sian Breslin – Sian’s Plan, 14:00: Maggie Lynch – Soul Food Company, 15:00: Tony Keogh – Cornucopia). There will also be live music from local band Ember J
I will definitely go to that event, it sounds really interesting!

Pre-Budget Demonstration
13:00, Sat 24 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The Dublin Council of Trade Unions are protesting against cuts and all types of austerity measures. The event starts at 13:00 at the usual spot for demonstrations, the Garden of Remembrance on Parnell Square. I couldn’t find where the march goes to, but the usual destination is the Dail in Kildare Street or alternatively Merrion Square.
Some people are quite critical about the Union’s involvement in these protests, considering that all bar one of the union bosses earn between 100k and 200k ( www.independent.ie/national-news/big-salaries-and-pensions-of-union-bosses-uncovered-3237083.html ), others wonder where – if not through cuts or tax increases – the money will come from, but everybody needs to decide for themselves if this protest is the best way to express your opinion.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 25 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Geansaí Nollaig (Christmas jumper) Challenge
14:00, Sun 25 Nov
Spire, O’Connell Street, Dublin 1
I have to admit that I never did and still don’t get the Irish fascination (in some circles) for Christmas Jumpers. That is the jumpers that are only given and worn at Christmas and which have usually quite awful Christmas-related motives on them. Reindeers, Santas, etc.
On Sunday the Christmas Jumpers get a mass airing in the only suitable context: a light-hearted and totally non-serious challenge.
You are asked to dig our your cheesiest Christmas jumper and come to O’Connell Street to set a new world record for the most number of Christmas jumpers in one place at the same time.It won’t surprise you that the previous record was set in Dublin as well. Last year 583 people attended the same event.
The event is part of the activities around the Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies in O’Connell Street. It isn’t explicitly said, but I would assume/expect/hope that particiaption is free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Are you needed or not? – Temple Bar Cultural Trust
I should start this by saying that I think the Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) has done a great job in Temple Bar over the years and that in some years they had absolutely outstanding events programmes. In recent years the exact same vibrancy is – possibly due to lack of funds – not there anymore, but the new umbrella roof over Meeting House Square that made that space so much more usable, the strong weekly Food Market on Meeting House Square and the Designer Mart in Cow’s Lane are big successes. All this has happened in the time since 2003, which was the year when Dermot McLaughlin was appointed chief executive of the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and therefore he deserves a huge amount of praise for the successes.
Sure if you are successful then there are detractors as well and there are people that say that Temple Bar went totally out of control and is not the success that others see. Well, I see three Temple Bars. There is the family-friendly Temple Bar during the day, then there is the twilight zone in the early evening and then there is mayhem and chaos with drunks and unsocial behaviour in the night. The first is perfect, the second could be a little improved and the third one of these personas is seriously problematic, but I see many other reasons than the TBCT. However I am digressing! I wanted to look at something else.
The aspect I wanted to look at is this: In October relatively unexpectedly for outsiders it was announced that Dermot McLaughlin would be going to Derry (coincidentally where he is from) for a period of 15 months to work a secondment as a project director for the City of Culture 2013 project in Derry. This sounded odd!! Because either he was the right man for TBCT and then he was needed in Dublin or he was on the way out and then a secondment would be a smoother way than to just replace him.
It seemed to me that he was the right man, so I don’t get why Dublin City did let him go. In the meantime, less than 2 weeks ago, it was announced that Dublin City has appointed Ray Yeates, the City Arts Officer as the head of TBCT during the absence of Dermot McLaughlin. But doesn’t that mean that either Ray Yeates was underoccupied in his previous role (which he still holds!) or he suddenly got superpowers and can do two full-time jobs at the same time!?
The Irish Times wrote in their article www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/1113/1224326526475.html that this might indicate the first steps toward reincorporating TBCT into Dublin City Council, but that would be very bad for Temple Bar and I hope that the wisdom of the City Council is far greater than that speculation could suggest.

If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
